  • Matt Pike of Sleep and High on Fire reflects on the lifer spirit of Lemmy of Motorhead, the magic of a one night bikie truce at a show in Sydney and their origins and his early tattoos in Oakland. Mastodon's Bill Kelliher reflects on their two year touring experience and long history with High on Fire and what bands like High on Fire and Neurosis share. Several killer stoner rock bands like Australia's Child and the UK's Orange Goblin also reflect on solos, blues and tone in this flashback special celebrating the mighty Matt Pike as High on Fire earn their first Grammy nomination for Electric Messiah. Features momentary guest appearance from Lemmy Kilmister on "the Motorhead way."

Joe Rogan does some cool interviews and it would be sick to get Matt Pike out to his massive audience BUT I think it would be way more awesome as well to get Matt together with Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins who speak fluent punk rock and see what happens with a monster conversation between three legends (I'd like to moderate).
If you like long podcasts, this is also a podcast and engineer Mike Exeter (who has worked with Tony Iommi for 20 years, worked on the final Sabbath record and the latest Judas Priest album) that I've just released that you may enjoy: czcams.com/video/c_z0BL-HKo8/video.html :)

High on Fire is the only band I’ve seen live, more than once. Saw some of the greatest bands in history: Pink Floyd and Tool come to mind. But Pink Floyd are no longer touring and I’m not paying $300+ to see anyone (Tool). I saw the Ænema tour in 1996 for $40.

When I was introduced to GoatSnake in '99...I chatted with Greg after the show to give them love cuz they tore my head off and offered a distinct sound that no one else had a grip on....
Greg told me that I needed to check out HOF...so I did one night on a midnight road trip to LA alone in my truck....I had to pull over because Baghdad scared the living sh*t out of me.
The beginning of Track 1 on The Art of Self Defense sounded like foreboding inescapable ancient truth.
I had no idea that tone and depth at scale accompanied with certain sort of esoteric subject matter like that was achievable, necessary, and that f*cking sublime, like the evil twin of Sleep.... in retrospect, it had to have been a baptism of sorts ... somehow invoking the angel that presides over the key of C with a merciless dull and rusty blade hardened in black widow black fire.....
Up until that point it was all about The Melvins, Clutch, Brainoil ...and I'm sure quite a few others that I'm sure that I may be ignorant of that were amazing, don't get me wrong, but in terms of brute force and frightening presence....no one has left a more indelible impression on me and in my humble opinion.
Matt Pike is the master of weaponizing over soaked denim clad tube driven warfare....and we haven't even scratched the surface in digging into George Rice and Dez Kensel's contribution to the art of the assault.
    Was Sleep proto HOF?!
Understanding of course that Sleep deserves an entirely specific conversation on their own here...I'm just so f*cking glad that Pike wasn't finished when Sleep wrapped it up at that point in their story.
Either way we can agree that one cannot exist without the other....
Thank you so much for posting this! And thank you for the opportunity to lay it down in my own words.
