In the latest in the ongoing Back & Forth series, metal god Matt Pike of Sleep/High on Fire sits down with comedian Rob Delaney on a recent trip to Los Angeles. The pair met to discuss hard hitting topics that ranged from newly minted sobriety to bulldozing guitar riffs to kale and cholesterol, taking many stops in between. Matt Pike is absolutely one of the most under-appreciated people in Heavy music, his contributions are truly timeless. I'm glad that he has hung in and stayed true to his well being.

I used to see Matt a lot in Oakland when I lived there. I have to say he's one of the nicest dudes around. No rock star persona B.S. I saw him the day that he was on his way to rehab. He bought an acoustic guitar from my store and seemed excited to start a new chapter.
Did merch for those guys on the blessed Black wings tour (2005), was an eye opener for sure

I was a bottomed out drunk since i was 11 yrs .old .I knew i wanted to be a die hard alcoholic the first time i got drunk .I'm 41yrs old now and have been sober for over 6 yrs. This September the13th will be 7 .Being a musician myself this is very inspiring...

Fantastic interview. Similar story here. Drank for 20 years, sober for 10 next month. High on Fire got me through some times. Matt Pike rules.

before my old band (theHeartland) went on our first tour I worked at a detailing shop called Buckeye Nissan. Every time we'd get a new truckload of cars, which was a couple times a week, the first thing i'd do is take them to the Speedway gas station up the block and fill up the gas tank with a company card.
So I got a speedy rewards card and every time I filled up a car I got points....long story short I kept 7 dudes hydrated and fed for 43 days on JUST speedy rewards points hot dogs, tornados, and fountain pops.

Often the beer bellys don't go away after a history of severe drinking because it's actually swollen liver and intestines from symptoms of cirrhosis, and not fat.

If ever you’ve been in that place, that very same one, Matt and Rob both, briefly discuss here, you know beyond any and all shadow of doubt that you have… And just how non-existently impossible it feels to crawl out of... and for most, if not all intensive purposes, and for some people, how it actually is… But nevertheless, if they have managed to do so, like these two both have, there’s really not much else after that you can’t get through…

I watched this interview when it came out and they're some of my favourite guys. I loved hearing their stories, but this sucks because I'm an alcoholic and I've tried since before this interview to quit and I just can't seem to get over my problem. I've tried to kill myself, I've wished myself dead, I've broken down more times than I thought was possible. I want this to be over but I can't seem to go more than a month before I just reset back to being a fucking alky.
I wish Rob didn't interrupt so much and try to interject with his stories. I like him, but had no idea Pike was in such a bad place & wanted to just hear him talk.
