- Steam locomotives disappeared from the Sri Lankan railways in the early 1980's. Three of them were rescued and are regularly used to haul the Vice Roy luxury train. This video is about a different kind of train, namely a steam-hauled mixed freight train chartered in February 2016 to visit the magnificent line between Colombo and Badulla. A tour organized by www.farrail.net.
Thanks for reminding me the steam days.I was lucky enough to be part of it. when the garret passes Greatwestern the vibrations are felt in my office in Nanu-Oya.Good one.I loved this. S.PANCHACHARAVEL.Retd.Chief Engineer.Srilanka Railways.
Great to see trains are still alive in Sri Lanka please save them Best Wishes from Australia
Victor Melder and I worked ballast specials together in Galle section in 1967. He contributed with an article for my book Biography - Golden Era of . B.D.Rampala Hav'nt heard of for some times. At 73 Golden memories still linger in our memories of C.G.R.
Nothing short of beautiful. I absolutely LOVE the whistles of the locomotives, they sound like what you would get from an LMS locomotive. Great work on this video.
How do I love thee
Let me count the ways...
I love Sri Lanka and I love trains.
Thanks for the upload.
Thanks Victor Melder!! sharing this. Bring back nostalgic memories of your's & my time in Ceylon Govt.Railways(CGR). Those coal fired giants had been a pride and marvel in mass passenger transport as well as haul of goods by rail than any other mode of transport then.
Engineer S.Pancharavel was my Boss in the Way Works Department. He served all over the island and it was a pleasure to work along with him. The last time we worked together was in the ADB's Multi Modal Study.
Where are you now Sir. In Australia ? Presently studies are on for Electrification. Upgrading MHO to TDK/ KelaniValley Upgradng / Anew line to Badulla under consideration / KRN / Dambulla Habarana on the Pipe Line. Ranjith Dissanayake.
What I like about this is that the loco is hauling this train without the assistance of a diesel at the rear, ever though there are heavy steam leaks.
Thank You Very Much. It was a treat to the eyes.
That was a wonderful journey with a good old steam Loco. I was so lucky to be in these steam locos during my small age with my dad as he was a Station Master during 50's and 60's. A memorable down the lane journey for me too!...
If you want to see how English railways were 70 years ago go to Sri Lanka. I'm currently here now and it's a blast from the past. Even the signals are English and the rails still have Worthington steel stamped on them haha. Travelling by rail is mega here.
Saw the engine named "Sir William Mallard" today in the burbs of Colombo. Was heading south. Some kind of movie shoot event I believe. Fabulous, watching these old stem locos. SO the best....
This video is priceless. Literally we are going back in time 😍😍
The best steam video of the Sri Lankan railway I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing
Brilliant video! I'll have to put Sri Lanka on my list of places to visit!
Sri Lanka railways shall start a new Steam Service

What a beauty Sri Lanka is. Very nice film.
Very nice video Wonder full country and great heritage (Love you Sri Lanka)
Very scenic steam Railway journey through beautiful Sri Lankan countryside. Really enjoyed a lot.
Watching a steam locomotive on the move is oddly satisfying. Enjoyed the train just as much as the scenery specially on the upcountry line.
Very well done! Splendid seeing Steam in Sri Lanka once sgain after many years! Keep up the superb and amazing work FarRail!👏
wonderful shots, and even more stunning in 4K
It's like watching a Hollywood movie. But sir can make movies for awhile !!! Fantastic sound and light. Capture in beautiful places. Thanks 💐 👍
brings memories back.I hope you could do this time to time.It is important to remember the olden days....Well done..You have no doubt taken great pains to do this. Just one thing I missed. That is how the Train Attendant puts coal into the fureness, inside the engine room and how the driver pulls the string for the horn. Probably, I have missed in watching it. Nevertheless, fantastic.
As usual, phenomenal video of steam where we don't often see it! Thank you for posting!
All the best thanks for the video as well as who involved fixing this locomotive. Good luck
Shekar from chennai engine sound and ghat section and natural sound and i salute photographs 🙌seema hear ooty and dargling only natural scenes this type of stream is their please save the heritage when 👀 the video my 👀 are like this 😍🙏
Fantastic video. The second steam engine with highly unusual side tanks for a tender engine really needs the cylinder glands attended to, It was like half the steam on the up stroke was going out the gland!
This poor engine was leaking from the regulator as well to the effect that the staff threatened to go on strike (and that would have been justified in this particular case). So the Sri Lanka railways sent a team to fix... the regulator. And they "forgot" about the cylinder cocks... Too bad. May be they perform better next year. This being said, many thanks for your nice comments.
My Country Sri Lanka :) Thank you for this! Wish it had some drone footage and more finesse in cinematography! Great stuff nevertheless!
@13:05+ For modern childrens and in Sri Lanka too, the Steam Loco is Great Wonder Magic, hehehe! Thanks for filming
Wonderful video. Great camera work. I like how you went to great lengths to get ahead of the train to get shots of it passing by in various places. Love the whistling. What is a choo choo train without the whistle? :) I turned up the audio to better get the effect.
that was indeed a fantastic tour!
Beautiful video and magnificent filming!!!
Great video and a very good camera.
Well done.
its my country thank you at least it goes to 25 KMPH
Amazing thank you for the great video!!!
I am amazed how this engine could still pull up those steep mountain slopes.
Thanks for uploading.
Most enjoyable, thanks for posting.
still it`s have it`s pride ......see people's reaction when they saw it old and young all happy
Excellent work! Would have loved to be part of the tour. Simply awesome.
+Rajiv Wijetunge Thank you for your nice comment. Normally, we should be doing it again ... in January 2018! Some time for you to get ready.
Impressive video! Thanks a lot!
Nice video Sri Lankan old train ...
Scenic countryside and the sound of a chugging old steam engine. Nothing else unfortunately!
Indeed, but steam trains were the very purpose of this video. There exist a lot of Sri Lankan videos on different subjects.
Wow... Nice video. Thanks for posting :)
Lovely video. Thanks !
sri lanka railway also have a garret locomotive , if its restored it can run upcontry without the support of pilot locomotive
+Randika Gunawardena Yes. I saw that locomotive and the remnants of a few more garratts such that one could hope to see one on the track again. I would be positively delighted if that would happen. This being said, the diesel pilot locomotive will always be there, "just to be on the safe side" I am afraid.
Thanks.Very interesting videos,
Superb!
Excellent stuff.
Where on youtube / or download website for most experience audio normal and high-resolution train-railway sounds . Video : UHD(4/8k) /full-HD or low780-HD
Thanks, gracias, nice video, Im love the train and people Asia
Beautiful
Super video
Awesome.. can I ask what camera do you use to film this?
At the time, I was using a Sony Z100. Now I moved to a Panasonic GH5S.
...realmente un muy buen video!!!!...buena imagen, como así también las posiciones de las cámaras...la naturaleza exuberante,
encantador, para los que nos gusta los trenes y todo todo lo relacionado a ellos: buenísimo!!!..
Its so beautiful.
Wonderful place
very beautiful video,thank you.
The steam locomotive looks like the train from the Jungle Book...
It is, the jungle book was filmed in sri lanka at matale using sri lanka steam locomotive
Nice !
Looks like they didn't change anything there since the Brits left.
Yes,it's a British engine. In those days used to run on time!
wow😍😍😍
Excellent filming .
RAILsIMAGES I found it very repetitive, too many head on views taken close to the track . No use of the zoom lens and no panning of the train as it passed by, similar to many other peoples videos where they just seem to leave the camera on a tripod then edit it afterward.
Painstakingly KochersbergTV has done an excellenyt job, must apprecate. looking forward for more videos with pride.
Wow very nice video. .
nice work
The Railway must introduce a Steam train to run between Nana oya to Badulla to accomadate tourists who will be happy to travel in this. The compartments should be of 1st and 2nd class and the SLR can earn a extra income during the tourist season. It seems to be the management do not have ideas or not interested.
Good video. The 39 dislikes were tree huggers, ha ha lol.
This is Fredrik north
This is Hogwarts supply train
Looks like a great prototype for an HOn66 model railroad.
Are you sure? This is a broad gauge locomotive, but admittedly, I am fairly ignorant as far as model railways are concerned.
Nice
Is this broad gauge?
Yes, all lines in Sri Lanka are broad gauge, they were originally built to haul tea.
do they have have stricked steam inspection laws there!? seams scary to be near one in these countrys. or its not uncommon to have major steam mishaps!!?? boilers exploding or !?
good God could he blow that bloody whistle any more, had to turn the sound off in the end
I am obliged to agree with you. The engineer sees people on the track, so he whistles. Unfortunately, to make this video, I had to stay along the track. A real nuisance, I agree, but not unique to Sri Lanka, unfortunately.
this is a very very old model...... used in 1800sAD britain
Sri Lankan Railways steam locomotive No 340 was built by Robert Stephenson & Co. in 1945, No 213 by the Vulcan Foundry in 1922.
🇱🇰🇱🇰🇱🇰
Terrible editing one scene 1 carriage, the next scene 2 carriages and a diesel banking, the next scene, 1 carriage, the next 2 carriages no diesel, all over the place like a mad woman's shit and every scene wheel slip, haven't they heard of sand to aid in traction, I wonder how many times they have replaced the whistle valve.
The first few scenes were showing the train on the coastal line & the other scenes were from the Main Line (on the hill country), so it was probably from 2 different trips!
