    The mindset you described in those JP FT1 tourneys made me think of how you'd have to approach a street fight. Unlike in an organized combat sports fight, where you'd have some of that meta knowledge to work with going in, or more rules to help you poke for knowledge in the moment, you have to read your opponent and execute your own plan pretty much simultaneously. It's an interesting thing to think about.

    I now realize that I struggled with certain characters exactly because of me playing in EU style!
    Now that you mentioned these styles, I think I will try and study other styles better and fully understand how to mix them up
    It is true that I often rock-paper-scissor my matches and it's the reason I find I have a decent consistency at reading others (reason why I prefer characters with reversals, since I manage to use them consistently) but this style is, probably, the reason I have a 45-50% win rate
    I'm literally gambling my matches on reads trying to figure out other EU style players with my EU style
    Damn
    More study to do, love it

    Hey not sure if you take suggestions but I was wondering if you could expand further on the topic such as like pulling out a map or an atlas and discussing the different styles of play around the world and which player(s) embody each style the best, that way it'd give some solid direction on who people could look at when they try to study the style. I really loved this video, I always pondered this question myself.

    Interesting the way you tried to describe typical Japanese playstyle. I remember asking Suiken about my playstyle and he said I reminded him most of Japanese playstyle. I wouldn't say I play the actual RPS 50/50 guessing well especially with how my ghost ai plays. A ton of the difficulty and strength of ghosts in T8 seem heavily influenced on if you yourself are good at enforcing 50/50 playstyle.
    I would say my style is predominantly rhythm/timing based to a fault, I'll find the flowcharts that typically works for me and run those as my plans (if I'm on point I'll switch between them seamlessly or fluidly) against the opponent during my offensive mindset. My defensive mindset is mix of finding counterhit opportunities and gaps where I can squeeze in crud that hurts the opponent hard that they don't want to run the normal plan against me. I play Yoshimitsu who has a ton of the best risky counterhit defensive play options for this, blade flash is the most obvious one for people, but there's also CD2, rookick, hopknee, and FCDF4. These are on top of the game buffing [sidestepping] movement and Yoshimitsu's backdash even being buffed if you ask me.
    But anyways, I'll refrain from ranting on about Yoshimitsu any further, back to the playstyle discussion. I think your theory about the FT1 style checks out for Japan, at least for why I developed my playstyle the way it is. I've been playing Tekken actively since the console online tag 2 days and even still I mostly spectate and only do short sets. Tag 2 this was especially the case however because I only played in rooms with quite a few others and this was like a classic arcade type style. You get in line to play in these rooms and you only get FT1 against everyone to win and maintain your streak or you're back to the end of the line. Tag 2's rooms were even longer than T7's so spectating in full rooms you're subconsciously encouraged to change up and learn from watching everyone playing before you in this type of environment, I didn't start playing competitively at all in Tekken until end of T7 S1. I still don't even have a regular sparring or training partner in T8 and I just did my 2nd long set with someone ever in T8. I think long sets are my biggest weakness in Tekken.
    I'll leave this comment with this quote I feel is relevant since I saw someone quote Iroh from Avatar. lol
    "A man doesn't excel because of his style. It's only when a man can go outside the bounds set by his system that he excels. If a martial artists can practice a style without being bound or limited to his particular school, then and only then can he be liberated to fit with any type of opponent." - Dan Inosanto

    Gotta say that you're the first person I've seen that actually breaks down the word "style" in an analytical way. Far too often I see players/streamers use the word "style" but don't actually know what it really means when it comes to the differences in regions. It's especially difficult IMO to nail down the Pakistani playstyle since there's really only Arslan and Atif to look at, and it's hard to define an entire region's playstyle based off of a sample size of 2 players. You've done amazing research to clearly show those styles and make it easy to understand for all levels of players. FGC community is very lucky to have someone like you!

    Yeah, for Pakistan, i think part of it is KOF influence. Arslan has KOF background. They play sort of 2D in a way.
    Like Devilster, I see a lot of backdashes. The match of Devilster and CBM, one is really backdashing and then go up in your face while CBM is looking for opportunities and whiff punish sidesteps.
    Tekken is still kinda 2D. 2.5D perhaps and that's why it feels solid. 2D with sidesteps. Games like Soul Calibur or DOA are full 3D game and the movements are 3D, it's something I feel like going into for some reason.
    Tekken is really a nice spot of 2D and 3D

    Video request: I read recently that in tekken, if your string/move leaves you at small - frames (the guide said -3), then it's still your turn. This was really mind-blowing for me as a 2d fighter player, where if you're safe but -, you should just block and wait for your turn/take the throw/maybe try to tech. I assume this means you can do something with small - frames, and then pick a movement option to beat a section of their options if you have a read on the situation. Is this idea valid in 3d fighters, and if so could you elaborate on it for us 2d players?

      If you want to learn more about that I recommend watching gajimaru's "Tekken 7 Alisa- How to poke for whiff creation" on YT. Even though it's a character specific guide it does a great job introducing the concept in a way where you can start applying it to any character and your general gameplan.

    • @afroraykun
      @afroraykun Před 6 měsíci

      Until Phi gets around to this, try searching up a video called "Tekken 7 Alisa - How to Poke for Whiff Creation" by gajimaru.
      It's Alisa focused (obviously) but it does a really good job of illustrating the options you have while slightly minus and how by threatening movement which might make your opponent whiff, you can dissuade them from pressing buttons and so continue your turn.
      It really levelled up my game; hope it helps!

    • @BullC6
      @BullC6 Před 6 měsíci +2

      Some characters have a really strong -frame game because of their movement or fast counterhit. Reina, Lili, Asuka and Lee off the top of my head. Like when you block Lee's df1, he's - but you are more F'd then he is. His Magic 4 will beat your fastest mid and his d3 will launch your high string you do to not eat Magic 4 and if you try to step and punish cuz you don't wanna get counterhit his 1+2 mid will counterhit you. That's why Tekken is so beautiful, one poke can lead to tens of interactions. Now what you can do is use your pokes and see how your opponent likes to react to them (duck, step, backdash, poke, big commintment etc.) and you can immedietly formulate a gameplan based on rhythm and timing.

      @@tenzinsherpa776What I mean is you don't hear about competitions here, there's next to no tournament either, where it seems that everyone is a pseudo top rank player when you scroll down comments in US youtube videos. Git gud and so on messages don't originate from european fgc, if such a thing even exists.

    What do you think contributes to Europeans, Pakistanis, and Koreans having a distinct style while NA does not? You touched on how Japan's style arose from how they ran tournaments, and I would assume that Pakistan would be a relatively insular scene, but what would make NA more variable?

    Would you say that T7 is a great game to hone your fundamentals on since some of the risks e.g low parry into full combo is now no longer a thing in T8?

    I personally enjoy EU and Pakistani styles. It reminds me of how we played in the US before Korea came and crushed our confidence. Think 5.0 and DR era.

    question for you PhiDX
    I notice a lot of the time when you do live commentary on your gameplay or analysis on your replays you will often talk about "running" a certain move for a certain situation, like a tracking move when your opponent is stepping or a mid when they duck
    however, doesn't simply running one or two moves at a time become predictable? for instance if a Jin were to decide "I'm going to run f4 now" wouldn't that leave them vulnerable to sidestep?
    what are the advantages of this mentality of committing to running a certain move, compared with playstyles that don't do so?

    • @KarlKognitiv
      @KarlKognitiv Před 6 měsíci

      It's the same in real fighting. You try to set up the situation, try to push the opponent into the move you have chosen.
      It does not mean you perform just one move. It means you are concentrating on implementing a chosen move for a chosen moment which you are waiting for or inclusively setting up.
