Federer was a great player, he will always remain in my heart.
It came on CZcams my smart TV , could not not watch most of it and yes , I was Rafa fan at time but who can deny the brilliance if Roger , already miss him , and I was literally on edge of my sofa at home screaming the big shots , breathless the close shots . The trophy speech I remember ‘ I would have been truly happy to have been runner up , as just being in the final was a victory as for the two of us ti even be back playing , injured , is truly miracle or the like . Just abot to hear that part of it . Greatest match in my city AO or one of the most heartfelt and crowds applauding. ALL great shots from both sides . That is the tennis that I don’t see these days , and it is sad . Brilliant Roger . You had the best technique and grace . Ballerinas see these things . Miss you
2017 was the one last special gift for all of us who grew up watching the Federer-Nadal rivalry until the early hours of morning on our TV. The GOATS.

2017 will forever remain my favorite as my 2 most beloved tennis players have played stellar tennis once again after both being down and out with months of injury in the previous year. When this final became a reality, I was crying like a boy, simply being amazed and happy to see my 2 tennis heroes playing another GS Final. I felt like it was 2007-2008 again. How they have played, dominated, took all the spoils and basically turned back the clock 10 years in 2017, is probably the most beautiful story in tennis history. Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Roland Garros, Halle, Wimbledon, US Open, Laver Cup and them playing doubles for the first time, Beijing, Shanghai. This was Fedal in 2017, which is simply nuts. We were blessed and spoiled like never before in 2017. I cannot wait for Roger to get back once again and I can't wait to see them both at this year's Laver Cup. FEDAL forever!
@@andreim.5324 Federer early on was known as the king of the baseline corners and the crosscourt backhand, but by 2017 he showed he had acquired great additional skill in coming forward to volley. It added much depth to his game and made him even more thrilling to watch.

Best backhand performance
The backhand for Roger was a real weapon in this match. It is a pity that most men use the two-handed backhand, which looks like they are chopping wood and although it is more powerful it lacks the control/finesse of a single-handed backhand. All right for women's tennis to use two hands, given the more powerful racquets, but men should have been able to use regular backhand. Then came the sliding on all surfaces....
The way he flattened it out for this match (and the rest of his career) really surprised Rafa.
Yea federers backhand is beautiful to watch ..... Just on a different level of elegance compared to the two handed backhand ....

Turning point of that match is when Rafa shoot out that forehand at 2:48:34 ! If that was in they go 4:2 RAFA after all hard work from Federer at that set and that game.. u can see Federer face after Rafa go to AD! for me that is the turning point. Sorry for bad bad bad english!

This match was the best day of my life as a sports fan. Everything about it was perfect. Thanks AOTV for uploading the full version so that the officially sanctioned version of the entire match is available for future generations that will now know what older guys like me are talking about when we expound at length about just how magical watching these players was.

I'm sure that if Roger used a bigger racquet frame earlier on in his career he would've won at least a couple of GS more. It improves his backhand and UE count, and not for nothing Sampras called it his biggest mistake not to switch to a bigger frame.

I am afraid that what I see on the tour does not please me. There is gossip, and with the women's there is a strip-tease quality about the way the women are presented, but most of all the nasty talk, the quarrels with spectators, and the questionable wins are highly troubling. I don't watch full matches anymore.
Roger's backhand was ruthless. Most of his backhands are generally defensive shots, but in this match, especially the fifth set, Nadal had no answer to Roger's cross court backhands. An incredible comeback from Roger, and one of my favorite matches.

The way Roger completely reinvented his game in 2017 at the age of 35 is astonishing. Overall, his ability to effortlessly hit winners and hit THROUGH the court AFTER the ATP slowed all the courts down is simply out of this world.
What is exciting now is watching Nadal do the same at the same age and seeing Djokovic almost accomplish a calendar slam at that age. I think the ATP needs to expand draw sizes and the number of tournaments. Not necessarily with players playing more tournaments but allowing players outside the top 32 to regularly compete with such greats. Tennis has a lot more depth with great players playing into their late 30s and I think we would witness more great matches if players had more time to rest between finals and more players had a chance to make longer runs. Instead of paying appearance fees limit the number of events each top 10 player can compete in and spread them over more events with Slams bringing together those top 10 players. The top 256 players are probably closer together than ever before but players outside the top 64 cannot be expected to compete successfully without more tour experience against top 10 players. Look at players like Shapovalov who are ranked in the top 20 but frequently lose after having a bye in the first round. It only takes a few losses like that and they effectively lose a month worth of competition training. Losing after a first-round bye also means a big drop since you receive no ranking points. The only reason for having first-round byes in the ATP is to rest players who played in the final the previous week and to give top players an advantage in later stages of the tournament. Better to have more tournaments and reserve a certain number of draw entries for players losing in early rounds and give players like Nadal and Federer a chance to play a lighter schedule in their later years when they need the rest more than the match experience.
That year the court was faster than previous years. He played so beautifully and aggressively during the whole tour

If court speed is really that important then I guess all of Nadal's eight majors win outside of clay ranks higher than any of Federer's win, because he is considered as a GOAT on clay which no matter what era, what generation, has always been the slowest surface.
Federer was very good on slower surfaces too it's just that he was a better player on the faster surfaces.
Nadal was asked about the surface speed at Wimbledon and he said eversince he started playing at Wimbledon (2002), he hasn't found any noticeable difference in the surface speed(Murray also said the same). He said may be people wants to talk about it because I won two majors here !
It's a shame that many Federer's fans use court speed as an excuse to defend his losses especially against Nadal and Djokovic.

I keep watching this very pivotal match. It revived Roger enough to win 2 more before his knee failed him for the lastime. Their historic battle here encapsulates their long and brutal rivalry. Nadal deserves credit for making Roger as great has he continued becoming. A match for history to hold secure.

In 2017 it seemed a fantasy and far fetched, but it happened. In 2022 it seems impossible. However, in my heart I feel we might get one more until they both retire. If I were to chose where, I would chose the US Open. It would be a shame for their magnificent rivalry to end without them meeting at least once at the US Open.
This was, by far, the best 5-set match that Federer ever played against Nadal. We had not seen a backhand like that from him. So, from this match on, Federer beat Nadal six out of seven matches. The other great match by Fed was his win against Nadal in that great Wimbledon semi-final of 2019. Fed won that one in 4 sets, despite an amazing attempt to come back by Nadal in the latter stages of that 4th set.
The level of Tennis on this match was unbelievable, after all this years I saw this match something like 10 times..never get bored

To me, this will forever be the greatest match I've ever watched.
I must have seen the last set 20 times since the match. I can't think of any 5th set in a slam that matched the sheer brilliance and emotional tension of this one. Rafa did not lose it; Roger had to raise his level to incredible heights to rip it away from him.

I was never a big tennis enthusiast. Imagine that, I grew up in times when Borg, McEnroe or Connors were dominant, but it always kind of slipped past me. Until I saw this match here one night. Some say "nostalgic" and I can understand that, but for me this is rather new. This match here made me a real fan. Man what a couple of awesome and fair sportsmen. This unbreakable will in Nadal is just as impressive as Federer's backhand. This is tennis from another universe. I always enjoy watching it. 😘

Man after Roger Federer retired I dont think that I can watch tennis the same way. But boy what a year. Djokovic record breaking and the humbleness he shows after fighting with hostile crowd especially at Australia Open. That speech in french blew me away. Also rising star Carlos Alcaraz being world number 1, carrying the torch with 35-3 seasons record and counting. At the age 20 !

I’m a Djokovic fan, and I didn’t know Federer broke back to win this title! Having done this makes it, in my view, more amazing, plus, Roger was I think 37 at the time.

@@zy9662 "Awful shots" are a result of Federer forcing them. It's what Pro players do to others, Djokovic usually forces "unforced errors" onto others, sometimes Nadals does it to other with his top-spin. In this match, Federer got the best of him.

2.6 months no match play and coming back after injury
3. 3 five setters and 1 4 setter en route to his title
4. Berdych, nishikori, (potentially) Murray, wawrinka and rafa in his draw before start of AO..
5.Never won against rafa in AO
6. His (so called) weak backhand especially against rafa
7. Roger's mental strength is not as good as Rafa
8.Roger chokes in tight situations
He defied all the odds against him.. That's true greatness

BTW, roger had to beat a player in AO2017 finals who has caused him all trouble right through his career(11-23 h2h) and who probably has greatest mental strength in our sport.. Medvedev is not even comparable and is known for choking .....Though both comebacks are unique in their own ways, roger's title run is the most greatest and the most difficult one.. I would agree with u, if rafa had defeated novak in AO finals 2022...
