      @@marcosdoyter7460no, Munar didn’t understand the English meaning of Kokkinakis‘ reply. “Or what?” means, “if I keep telling you to shut up, what are you going to do? Are you going to fight me?” They are words that school children say to each other when there is a verbal conflict, and one person (the person saying, “or what”) wants to escalate it to a physical fight.

    These clips highlight the importance of good umping. Umpires, like everyone else, can make mistakes, but they can choose to defuse the situation by owning up to it. The handling of the Tiafoe net-incident was perfectly managed, as was the umpire giving Rune some friendly advice. The opposite led to Ymer losing his sh*t. Not defending his behavior at all, but it didn't need to come to that if the umpire had just checked the effing mark.

      The Net rule is a complete nonsense. Doesn't have any common sense. Net is a net, it doesn't matter if you play singles or doubles. Either shorten the net / court for singles, or don't have this stupid rule. So you can't shoot balls threw there, because there is a net, but you can bump into the net and it doesn't count as a net, because they play singles? Thats just a bad rule.
      And I don't know what u talking about Umpires. Rune lost a point, because of an Umpires mistake. So what is gonna happen, if it is an important point and someone loses the match because of that? The match then shouldn't be valid. He lost the set because of that. Does the Umpire gets punished/fined, as Rune asked? No I think they don't. And its not fair. Thats why every match should have hawkey calling the shots, people are just unreliable and there is more then enough evidence in the past.

    Ymer definitely overreacted but I do feel his frustration. That ball looked long to me, or if it was in it would have barely touched the line. No idea as to why the chair umpire was refusing to check the mark, they normally spring up from their seat if a player is questioning it.

    • @matonatomic
      @matonatomic Před 4 měsíci +29

      I thought the issue is that if you think the call is bad during a rally, you must stop and challenge straight away. You can’t play the shot, then challenge after you lost the point because of your bad shot.

      @@matonatomic I think the problem is with waiting for a call. If you hear 'out' you know you have a leg to stand on. You can't check those things while doing everything at the same time. That's where umpires and the other folks are for.
      This has also happened a couple of times where a player calls a ball after .
      So the fact the umpire even refused to get out of his chair just doesn't make sense to me.

    • @matonatomic
      @matonatomic Před 3 měsíci

      @@PelleKuipersas a tennis player, your job is to return the ball into your opponent’s court. You only stop to this if the officials tells you the point is over, or it’s obvious that the ball did not land in your court. You can’t wait for the e officials to call if the ball is in our out before you play your shot. This is just ridiculous. So if Ymer plays his shot here and it goes in, does he dispute the point later fate who ever wins the point?
      TBH, if you are waiting or hoping to hear the out call before you play your shot, your mentality as a competitive athlete is poor. You will have a low chance of winning that point.

    • @matonatomic
      @matonatomic Před 4 měsíci +3

      In our Aussie Rugby League, the refs get demoted to a lower grade competition if they perform poorly in the Professional grade. I say that if players in Tennis get 2 challenges per set, then lines people should be swapped if they make 2 wrong calls. There should be no shame associated with this because we all know we can have a bad day at work due to no fault of our own.
      Refs I’m sure do get together and review theirs and each other’s performances post match but the supervisors need to make it transparent to the public of any outcomes.

    Refs have to be consistent. I totally believe it when Ymer says he has never seen a ref not check a mark when a player asks. Even when they are sure they still come down and just show it to the player. The rules probably don't specify that he should come down, but you have created an expectation with players when you always do it and that has to account for something.
    The ref says he cannot check it twice, then that he saw it good. That doesn't make sense. He won't check it. Perhaps his English is poor, but to sit in that chair you have to be able to express yourself properly in English. Seems like later he may have refered to Ymer not immediately stopping which is not a rule, it's a judgement call, which I think is very close here.
    At any rate, the umpire was all over the place here, made bad arguments and he could have avoided the whole thing by just checking the mark. Managing the situation is also part of refereing and he chose to boost his ego over his job, facilitating the game.
    Ymer's actions later on were inexcusable, but that's a seperate matter.

    Umpire for Frances v Milos was correct. I mean you can even accidentally make contact with those boards behind the baseline area and you wouldn't be called out so same thing goes at that outer, doubles part of the net. But I about that Bublik v Goffin. I think Goffin continued playing, wasn't hindered, and his ball went out so the point should've been awarded to Bublik. Rune erasing ball mark is uncalled for.

    can someone re explain the issue that happened in toronto? i didnt really understand what fergus murphy was saying

    • @Riftinducer
      @Riftinducer Před 4 měsíci +6

      So, a doubles net is wider than a singles net by a bit over a metre on each side. In tournaments where the court doesn't have the fittings to put a specific singles net in, they'll use a doubles net and put little bits of wood called singles sticks in where the singles post should be to make the net cord hang like a single net. In that case, the rule is that the section from the singles stick to the net post doesn't count as a "net", but as a "permanent fixture" sort of like the walls and fences around the courts. That's important here because you're not allowed to touch the net during a point, but permanent fixtures are fine.
      Tiafoe touched the "permanent fixture" part of the net, which Murphy realised after he made the touch call and corrected himself, and since Tiafoe hit a clean winner that Raonic had no play on even if he wasn't distracted by Murphys call, he was awarded the point. Raonic didnt know that rule, and was convinced he should have been given the point due to the supposed net touch.

    • @MrLiverpoolfan4ever
      @MrLiverpoolfan4ever Před 4 měsíci +1

      Tiafoe hit a winner, but touched the net before the 2nd bounce. Usually this would mean he loses the point, however he only touched the portion of the net in the doubles alley so didn't lose the point. Aka, if the point was played on the Next Gen court the player could hit that shot without hitting the net, but almost every tournament has a longer net & court lines for doubles matches.

    • @got2bjosh
      @got2bjosh Před 4 měsíci +2

      Raonic still won the match.

  • @channel-ol1yn
    @channel-ol1yn Před 2 měsíci

    Both the match referee and tournament referee in the tiafoe/raonic match were wrong. The double part of the net is connected to the whole net and when tiafoe ran into that part of the net, the whole net moved so his action has interfered the ongoing point. The point should be awarded to raonic.
    Going by the referee's reasoning, a player can then argue if the ball hit the double part of the net the ball could have gone over and landed in if that part of the net is not there.

    The call at 16:10 into the video is disturbing. If you look at the side camera the ball may have barely touched the line if at all. But even if it did the mark should BARELY be touching the back of the line, however, the picture that shows the ball mark shows the ball having touched closer to the front end of the line than the back end. No way.

    This is the first time I hear about the net being split to portions for singles and doubles. Is this really part of the rule when a player touches the net? It should be changed - it's idiotic. So if you hit a ball in the "doubles portion" of net, then this shouldn't count as a fault - by this rule. Plenty of such points in every match. Are they replayed? Conceded? Or what?
