Head Movement In Golf Swing (Keep Your Head Down Or Swivel It Open?)

  • In this video, Henry and I chat about head movement in golf swing, specifically how it moves through the hitting area amongst the game's best. We separate these styles into 2 ways. Some keep the head down (or "stay in the shot"), and others let their heads swivel open.
    We'll look at a few PGA Tour and LPGA Tour golfers that exemplify both movements, including: David Duval, Annika Sorenstam, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Mac O'Grady. Eye dominance may play a part! So the question is, should YOU keep your head down in the golf swing or let it swivel open?

    I’m left handed and left eye dominate and I was going to ask about this exact subject on our next swing evaluation based off of a bit of research I did with eye dominance. Henry said I was moving my head like Duval and I was curious as to why and it’s because of my left eye being dominant. So glad you guys touched on this subject.

    I was in a practise bay 2 away from one with Ronan Raffeerty - a well-known Irish golfer from a few years ago - who was there for a promotion. He had obviously just read the same Jack Nicklaus's book that my father had, where Jack talks about looking at the ball throughout the swing with his left eye - to stop his head coming up. But he was overdoing it badly and after address turning his head and staring in a 'manic' manner at the ball. The assistent pro with him didn't say anything but eventually I had to point it out. So he tried to stop doing it but couldn't - going from a perfect setup to looking like a madman. Made me feel better as an amateur for those times where you tell yourself to 'keep your head down', but fail miserably. Obviously even the pros suffer in the same way :-)

      @@MiloLinesGolf In comparison to an amatuer hitting from the top and early extending, they do keep their heads down ! :-) Just looked at Sorenstams swing and it is surprising how much it comes up and also how early she starts to look at the target, a bit like a pro cricket that stops watching that ball from even just before the bounce.

      @@ulster7717 Within the last quarter of a second there is virtually no chance for the cricketer to make adjustments to where he has commited to puting he bat, so video has shown that some cricketers stop watching the ball, as 1/4 second is before the ball bounces so no chance of reating to the bounce. Some even closed their eyes on the video I saw. That video was years ago so little chance of finding it, but I found this link which might be interesting : www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3596397/. However some players report being able to see the ball when they hit it, and from experience of once (or maybe twice) being 'in the zone' when playing tennis that might be true as the tennis ball certainly seemed bigger - leading us to go 5-0 up in a game of double as I buried anything that came to me, but then I came out of the zone and we lost the set ! :-(

    Great video. I have a question Milo. You said in this video its bad for your head to get out in front of the ball. I recently re discovered one of your older videos where you use gears to show that your upper centre gets out ahead of your lower centre in transition then kicks backwards as the pelvis kicks forward. I have been trying this to great effect with my irons. I wonder if you could do a video where you demo and compare how the upper and lower centres move back and forward throughout the swing with driver vs iron not using gears. I sort of feel like i am getting my head ahead of the ball in transition then kicking back. Must just be a feeling as my bad move has been a tilt back and get stuck

    I’ve been unlucky in that I’ve been forced to go from right eye to left eye dominant (result of stroke). Pathetic depth perception! My trend has been to try swinging harder by pulling left shoulder up and swinging flatter which is over the top. Now because of your videos I am turning shoulder more on the swing plane and getting better ball flight with draw. I add every one of your vids to a playlist so I can rewatch as my memory like my swing sucks!

    You stated that you have some spine extension, and a little leftward lean. Wouldn't that be difficult for a right eye dominate person? What are the pros and cons of the spine extension? Some UTube golf gurus say don't extend, but compress into the ground lowering your head and knees during the backswing so you can extend verticallly later. However, others are like you and extend - then compress-and extend again. Can you clarify this extensions / compression? You have really great insights into the mechanics of the swing.

    Can you talk about hip sway vs head movement? Basically how to allow for head movement but not start swaying

  • @AndrewDCDrummond
    @AndrewDCDrummond Pƙed 3 lety +1

    I am a believer that the head will stay in the correct position until the body release pulls it up and around IF the rest of the swing is correct. That's assuming that the head doesn't shift off the ball in the backswing.If the head is coming up early it's because you are doing something wrong elsewhere.

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  Pƙed 3 lety

      Agreed, sequencing-wise it should be later down the pipeline. However, sometimes getting the head to "feel" like it's moving in tandem with or ever prior to the rest of the body in a lesson can help open things up though and produce a better pivot.

    Milo, does you head also back up when hitting irons? It seems to be more with the driver and the slight hitting up motion. Head backing up might lead to fat irons?
    Isnt it true that in all hand to eye events you want your eyes steady? (at impact)
    Hogan and Snead very much the head cock and the left eye on the ball...this also seems to mentally begin the turn and clearing for the backswing.

      Depends where the head is coming from in the backswing. Mine for example tips slightly towards the target at the top of the swing, therefore it moves slightly more back coming into the ball.

    The real problem is that we always want to look in the direction that we're swinging or directing our force. We do this in every other sport - we look at the target. So why do people tend to look up in golf - because they're swinging in that direction. Why do good players keep their head down? They're swinging in that direction! Good players are not swinging toward the target, they're swinging toward the ball and therefore it's easy to keep your head down. Every good player does this whether they're aware of it or not. It's how the golf club works and it's simple physics.
