How To Keep Your Head Down And Stay In The Shot (Do This For COMPRESSION)

  • Have you been told to keep your head down? I would guess you have, but have you also been told to keep you head out? In this video, Henry and I take a look at head movement in the golf swing and why keeping your head down may not be the best idea, especially for working your way through the shot from impact on. That being said, when it comes to keeping your head out over the ball, that can be crucial to staying in the shot and not backing up out of it. For those that struggle with early extension, heel and/or toe strikes, and standing up at impact, this could be a lightbulb watch. We hope you enjoy!

    Excellent! My head backs up big time. I’ve been working on this for awhile now. It hasn’t been an easy transition, but I feel it’s necessary for a stable club face.

    So apropos, as usual. One thing i noticed on having proper tilt/sideband and head position is how it affects balance. If in the proper position putting my hands way out front or behind doesn't cause much of a weight shift to the toes or heels. Whereas if upright you can feel the compensation.

    I’ve been working on this for a few weeks. Been considering dropping a pad from my ceiling to keep my head against it. This vid has helped me commit to doing so. Also interesting the angle of Milo’s belt line also matched the shaft and forearm at impact position with the hockey stick. Thanks for the video.

    Great video. Often curious. I slow motioned that gentlemen’s swing and his club face at shoulder exit was slammed shut. Does that matter that much? Or is having it open and not flipped closed more optimal ? Some say the ball is already gone so it doesn’t matter

    Milo: I hope you don’t take offense but I believe this video is much better than the one on which you and I exchanged comments. I’m not suggesting that you took anything from my comments but IMO this video is much smoother in the back and forth, is more concise, had no distracting movements, and gave me (at least) the impression that you and Henry had rehearsed it before you recorded. It also made nice use of a demo and slow motion. It’s probably a coincidence as I say, but a big thumbs up. Further, thank you for getting me to think about something important that I had never focused on before: the necessity of that short right arm. Mine is lengthening as I go through and it ruins impact of course. I have worked on staying down and through, maintaining posture, sticking my butt out, etc.-but I’ve never hit shots with any awareness of what my right arm was doing. That is something I’m going to attempt. If I can maintain that awareness and feel it straightening at or before impact, I’ll know I’ve backed up or away.

    I am surprised you didnt mention head rotation.
    One of the most prominent characteristics of Milo's swing, IMO, is his head rotation. The allowing of the rotation to occur promotes, IMO, the head keeping its level. The static head usually is a component of a block.
    It looks like Milo's head swivel leads his downswing and follow through, which promotes continued rotation thru impact and to a good finish, IMO.
    This gets back to the eye dominance issue......Hogan, Snead, Nicklaus all used the head swivel to begin their backswing rotation....it seems right eye dominant players use this in the opposite direction. (the downswing)
    Always good input....love the backdrop of the mountains in all your videos.

      Thanks for watching! It was a subtle mention with the circling motion Henry demonstrated, but we were more looking at head height and staying out. Here is another video on this: czcams.com/video/KPcxoncuNTc/video.html

    Thanks Milo for another great video. I'm curious if the lie angle on your irons is very flat because of the angle you come into impact. It seems that from the way you approach the ball on your downswing and your squat, you'd need a very flat lie angle on your irons to hit the ball squarely. Is that true?

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  Před rokem

      My lie angles are 1* flat and my shaft lengths are 1/4 short

  • @roythomson638
    @roythomson638 Před rokem

    Having the weight in my heels vs my toes helped me with this issue,
    I used to get on my toes so when I tried to keep my head out I would just instinctively back up to maintain balance

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  Před rokem +1

      I typically like pressure over balls of feet to start. Hard to keep head out if you are way out over toes, agreed. Rear has to stay back to match spine and head out.

  • @Frazer20

    I think what makes this so difficult for the average golfer like me, is that the correct way doesn’t “feel” powerful, even if I know that to be wrong The wrong way, with everything extending and releasing before the ball, gives the impression of power and speed, it’s counter intuitive.

      @MiloLinesGolf  Před rokem +1

      From what I have see, yes. He also aligned his head in a specific manner at setup and was extremely detailed on the specifics of eyes and the visual understanding of the swing. I am not MORAD-er though so you’d have to ask one of them.

  • @temporarystranger95
    @temporarystranger95 Před rokem

    I think one of the biggest misnomers in golf instruction is “keep your head down.” I think that actually is destructive to golf swings. I like to think of the head “swiveling” with the upper body, like what happens in a chip shot. Release the head, don’t try to keep it down! When the chin buries down into the chest in the golf swing, that promotes coming out of posture, standing up, and flipping though impact. I like your terminology of keeping the head “out” rather than down, but I still prefer the concept of the head swiveling with the upper body through the golf shot.

    What’s interesting is when you slow mo it, Henry is losing the face and flip/rolling it hard. This pattern id expect to see more clubface stability, especially when trying to exaggerate

    • @MiloLinesGolf
      @MiloLinesGolf  Před rokem

      If we could slow it down even more you would see that Henry has the face square early and it remains square for a foot beyond impact then it does turn over more than many top players.
