Every Wednesday Tim brings across a couple of cases of toys from his never ending collection for us to film. We often do not know in advance what he is going to bring. But recently Tim brought across a really eclectic mixture of toys: some vases, of which several were magic, and a few pneumatic or air powered toys. We had a lot of fun filming these!

Its day 457. My greatest regret is that I lost that vase, and wherever it was, it must have tipped over. The earth is now completely flooded. We survive on rafts and birds that we catch with out bare hands. The only consolidation we have is that we never thirst. For we float upon water, water from the Nile.

The vase has a double-wall, and there is a small hole in the inner wall. Fill the vase with water, and gradually the space between the inner and outer wall will fill with water. You can then empty the vase, but after a few minutes, you will find there is more water in the vase. Water is slowly trickling from between the inner and out wall through the small hole, into the main vase.
The most extraordinary thing about Tim is that everything is one shoot take.

it has a smaller vase in side with holes drilled into it so the water in the big case slowly poors into the smaller one

There's a tube extending down from the opening of the vase nearly to the bottom. When the vase is right way up, the water is able to get into the tube from the bottom. When he tips it up, the water that's in the tube pours out, but the rest is left around the tube inside the vase.
If it was just a smaller container full of holes inside a larger one, it would leak continuously instead of only letting a little out at a time.

No you cover up a hole in the side of the vase with your finger which only lets a little bit of water out so you just cover it up every time so you can pour a lot of times.

I always loved wind up toys, and the fact someone has actually made a few pneumatic toys is just even cooler to me. I agree, anything air powered is actually quite neat. It's no wonder why I still love things like Air pressure Nerf blasters. The mechanics behind them are truly interesting stuff.

This is my favorite video of this series so far. These are so cool.
One of my favorite tips as a kid was a Lego Technic set. It's a crane that you build and once it's done it has a pneumatic pump that makes it do different things like the claw opening or closing.
I know how the water of the nile works, but not that rope with the vase...
There is a ball inside of the vase, it gets stuck with the rope as he puts it upside down and pulls. then when he puts it up and presses the rope down the ball falls down and the rope can move.
How do that one work?

Holly McCaskey The neck of the vase goes down almost all the way through, so some water is in the center but most is the in outside section. As he tips it the stuff in the inside is empties, and the outside is trapped. Once leveling it out, the water evenly distributes to the center. (after the first Pneumatic toy you can see the neck continue down as he pours)
