In 1999 my husband bought a new Dodge diesel 1 ton long bed pickup truck. In 2000 we bought a small 5th wheel RV and started traveling with another couple. Charlie bought a 2000 dually Chevy pickup. In the next 4 yrs we traveled the Eastern US. We bought larger (30 ft) 5th wheels. We crossed the Mississippi and headed west for the 1st time. We did Canada, Alaska, the entire western US over the next (except California) 11 years. Due to age...77 and 79..we sold our 5th wheel 2 yrs ago but the same truck is still with us. Never failed us. Regular maintenance and occasional repairs it now has close to 400,000 miles. It's not pretty anymore but he loves it.
Your story gives me hope. My husband and I had hoped to travel after I retired. A year before I retired we bought a truck and RV. Then my parents needed full time help and didn't want to leave their home. So we made a commitment and since then my Mom passed but my Dad is still hanging in there. We enjoy the time we have with him. But are looking forward to traveling. Even if it's only for a few years. I was losing hope. I'm not 70 yet so I still hang onto hope.

One overlooked benefit of a diesel engine is the exhaust brake. I couldn't imagine going down the side of a mountain without that
I wouldn't have less than that for traveling the continent. I'm retired as a trucker and bought my 5th wheel and Ram Cummins to pull it with.
My new dodge RAM has that feature.

We've been using our engine brake on the 6% and 8% grades in New Mexico and Arizona. It works spectacularly well!

I had a Ram Cummins 05 model for 12 years and last year traded for a new Ford F250 with the new 7.3 Gas engine and it's the best decision I have made in years!! My fifth wheel is a 31 foot and weights around 10k loaded for the road. This engine has no trouble pulling the 9% grades in West Virginia and my MPG is around 2 miles per gallon less than I was getting on the Cummins. Maintenance is cheaper and I don't have to worry about expensive injector pumps failing or other diesel problems. Ford has knocked this one out of the ball park with using the 10 speed (same as with the diesel) and my non towing MPG runs around 18 on the highway. No more diesel problems for me!!
Good choice Mr. Browning! I have the 2017 Ford f350 xlt diesel first generation "alumiduty" that we took delivery "new" at a Ford dealership 5 years ago. I did only all the basic maintenance myself and just replace steering stabilizer, tires, and oem with H&S performance intercooler (which is prone to exploding with high turbo psi pressure when towing or pushing to the limit). It has been trouble free and is now at 111,000 plus miles and counting. Although, i would probably get our next super duty with the 7.3L gasoline for simplicity and fuel accessibility.
I agree. It’s the only gas engine I would even consider. Ram and GM have had multiple problems with their gas engines and while they make good power you have to wind them out to get it. The Ford Godzilla (7.3) has a very flat torque curve for a gasser. It’s also overbuilt. The internals are forged. Other than some bad plug wires when it first came out it really hasn’t had any chronic issues.
You couldn't give me a Chevy or diesel. You admitted a chevy falls apart at 120000 miles, why not a better brand. My Ford has no torn interior at that same mileage.
I appreciate your comment, because I have been thinking about that gasser. I have an 03 5.9L cummins which I like very much, but there have been a couple of times traveling when I needed a good diesel mechanic and none were around. It's a helpless feeling......even though I can wrench on the truck myself, some things are beyond my abilities. I feel that there are many gas engine mechanics, even in the boonies. At 71 years of age, I am no longer concerned with how long the truck will last, because any of them will probably outlast me at this point.

I was shopping at Lexus dealership and the saleslady says that when you plug in, you get FREE mpg! I guess she doesn't pay her electric bill.....

Electric vehicles are the ultimate form of control, with GM on star they can shut down a car, only tesla can work and get parts on their cars, in the future social credit score will determine wether or not you can drive today.
I now haul with a gasser. It pulls anything I need just fine. I found, even when diesel was around gas, unless you are hauling heavy everyday, like a hot shot trucker or something, you are never going to recoup the upfront cost and the extra maintenance cost of a diesel. Now even more so that diesel is so high.
I thought the same. I tow a 21 ft light wt. Lance TT. Half ton gas Ram is doing the job!! I don’t live in my rig.
covering upfront cost of a diesel depends on how many miles you drive and how long you keep the truck. at 15,000 miles a year I needed to have my diesel 5 years before I break even on those upfront cost.
Thank you. Yes it all depends on how heavy you are hauling and where. We can't say enough good things about diesel engine brake when crossing mountain passes. BUT if you have a light trailer you'll bet by just fine with a gasser. Happy travels and thanks for your comment!
When I was looking for a 3/4 ton truck in 2018 I did a lot of research between gas and diesel and since I wouldn't be driving it a lot I found the break even point would be 150,000 miles. It would take me forever to get that many miles on it, so I got the Silverado with the 6.0 and it's pulled my Rockwood 32' 5th wheel with no problems even going over the mountains from CA. into Reno or Tahoe. Another bonus is since its Flex fuel I'll run E85 in it in between camping trips and right now its over a buck cheaper then gas.
So glad you did the research. It really does depend on your situation whether gas or diesel is the best choice. Happy travels!

If you ever drive a dually with your rig tou would not go back to a single rear axle. Much more stable, safer, the ride much better because there is ALOT less sway.
Your new truck is beautiful. Be careful with the silver paint impossible to match if something happens.
I know a diesel mechanic who works on Fords mostly,his lot is full of them new and old.He has to take the cab off the frame to work on it.
I have a duramax dually custom conversion, no engine problems what so ever. Great choice.

After 4.5 years fulltime in the smallest Airstream I just switched to one of the biggest Airstreams at 30 feet and 10,000 pounds loaded and happened into a diesel truck. I had been ambivalent as I've thought about gas vs. diesel. What I thought I was deciding on was gas being slightly more easily available and pulling power and cost of purchase and repairs (a fulltimer friend with a diesel truck had an $8K repair which had spooked me a bit!). What I did not realize is ENGINE BRAKE. I LUV my engine brake. Now would not want anything except diesel at this size (3/4 ton truck).

One thing I really enjoy with a diesel is being able to go through the truck lanes with the RV. Makes it a whole lot easier and safer than trying to find a gas pump that you can fit your truck and camper with. The TSD Open Roads program that you mentioned saves you a bunch of money when you go through truck lanes.

Thanks for sharing your experience with upgrading to your new truck. Last September I ordered a 2022 GMC Crew Cab Denali 3500 4x4 with the Duramax and pretty much every option but the snow plow prep package (as I live in the California desert). Anyway, fast forward to April when I was finally able to take delivery after five months of my brand new truck sitting in Flint, MI waiting on whatever chip it was waiting on. All I can say is it is the perfect tow vehicle to pull our 42' Jayco North Point, which weighs in at just over 16K. I'm with you on the diesel package as you just don't need to worry about getting over the steeper grades. I'm also a huge fan of the trailering goodies which include the trailer 'see-through' rear view camera mirror option, the relocated brake controller, the TPMS package for the trailer tires, and the trailer app which accommodates multiple trailers. Not to disparage other very fine HD trucks out there... I'm with Paul when it comes to the best of the best... professional-grade GMC. (y)
Yay! Sounds like you have pretty much the same truck as we have. We actually do have the snowplow package! Yes, all those bells and whistles with trailering really make it nice. That's why we bought it. Plus Paul really likes the steps to the bed and the split tailgate. Enjoy yours and hope to see it in person at a campground someday. How fun that would be to compare trucks!
I had the same experience after my 3500 HD was built it sat in Flint on hold for over a month. We also ordered in September 2021 and got it in April 2022

I am currently looking to upgrade my 3/4 ton Chevy to a 1 ton also. I was thinking diesel but have watched so many videos on YT about the emissions related issues the diesels are having, not just Duramax but Cummins and Powerstroke also. Had a good conversation with a diesel mechanic of 20 years, he advised me to steer clear of the new diesels , go gas.
He's an honest mechanic because I would have told anyone the same. When your exhaust on a diesel cost $10k for just parts alone and no labor factored in. People keep forgetting that DEF is a cost just like buying diesel or buying gas at the pump. People leave DEF out like it's not needed. Haha it's funny when people say they get 20+mpg in a diesel but then you ask them how much for diesel and DEF. Then they shut up after that because they are paying the same, if not more than just filling up a gas truck.
@@JacobWinkle Very true. I never plan to buy anything that uses DEF again.
Be very careful with your moving to a one ton from your 3/4 HD. You can sometimes lose towing weight capability but gain in-bed hauling weight. So, what is the job/s for the new truck? The extra weight of dual rear equipment, heavier springs and suspension subtracts from towing weights! This illustrates the dually one-ton benefits by allowing more in-bed weight. Good Trips

I ordered a new Ford F250 in January 2022 and I have to pay the MSRP but it's OK at this time. When I tried to buy a new truck from a lot they add a few thousand Dollars to the MSRP. I tried to buy another truck, used from lot, but trucks which are 1 or 2 years old cost the same price like a new one and the most dealer try to charge you ridiculous fees over ridiculous fees. A Ford dealer in Tampa tried to charge me 5K on fees for a used truck and they were extremely aggressive when it came to sign a contract. For example $1.500 for sanitized the truck. They denied to give me a copy of there calculation for the fees. And I learned everything before signing the contract is bla bla bla.... most time.
Now Ford told me the new truck will come next weeks so I will just wait and buy the new one with less fess but full MSRP.
Another Chevy dealer tried to sell me a Silverado 2500 which was on the lot for the price of a new one. That the car had an accident they told me when it came to buy the car, not before. The Silverado is now six weeks later still on there lot for more than 5K less than they tried to sell it to me. Now you can see that this car is total overpriced otherwise it were already sold. My first language is not English and you can see that some dealer treat you like an idiot. They think you are speaking broken English than you also think broken.
Aww, so sorry you've experienced this. We have not had a good experience with our dealer, you may have noticed we blurred out the name of the dealership in our video. It's so crazy how they are treating customers now. It used to be you could call up two dealerships and negotiate who would give you the lowest price. Not anymore.
We have a 2021 GMC Denali 2500 diesel and love it for towing. Nothing beats a diesel for towing and longevity. Congratulations!

Great video as always Liz and Paul. I totally agree with all the factors you both looked at and into. Prices stink but I am with you both in that you do not want to be in a situation where you break down and have a issue while traveling. I definitely agree on a diesel given where you travel to, the weight you are pulling, and mountain passes/grades. So many factors to look at and consider. 1 ton for sure is the best for towing the weight you are towing as well as going diesel. Another major topic is some would say is the trim level, Denali being at the top end. I am with you both, it’s more than you may have wanted but the distance you drive that comfort is well worth it. You both did the research and ran all the numbers to what made sense for your traveling, tow ratings, etc. Great truck and the best choice in my opinion. Safe travels and happy camping. 😊

What sold us were all the safety features: the seat vibrates when the truck drifts out of lane, also if someone is too close to us in front, it has blind spot alerts on the side mirrors, and lane change cameras when towing. I have a 2019 F250, long bed, 3/4 ton, 6.8 gas engine. No problems pulling 13k tons. Bought the basic truck, little frills, white, pre-pandemic. Living the life.

I just traded in my 2019 RAM 3500 Dually and went with the best, which was a 2022 RAM 3500 Dually. It's got a Cummins with 1075lb torque and heated front and rear seats, and vented seats as well. But I lucked out and bought it just before the fuel prices went crazy. So I got almost exactly what I paid for the 2019 new for my trade in, and got the new truck a little less than MSRP. I have 5400lbs of cargo, and 34,000lbs of towing. So this truck should last us forever! Stay safe you guys!

1: more torque
2: exhaust brake
3: longevity of motor
4: access to truck stop diesel pumps with long rigs, much easier ( try getting into a gas station with a gas truck and long rig…very stressful)
5: resale value
In my view safety is key. An exhaust brake is a must for towing heavier rigs.
I also traded a 3/4 ton diesel truck for a one ton dually diesel for the same safety factor.

Went shopping for a new Jeep Grand Cherokee L- it was awful. Decided to keep our 2015 Grand Cherokee. The dealer put a 7K premium on the new car and offered below the lowest KBB for our car which is in pristine condition. Walked out laughing at them. Another Jeep dealer told me that to get a decent trade, we would have to pay a premium for the new vehicle. Never paid MSRP for a car. Will wait it out as our Jeep is doing well. I spent 7 years as a professional driver towing RV's from Northern Indiana to dealers everywhere. All drivers were contractors and were responsible for all expenses and were paid for the loaded mile. About 50% of my peers used Ram and the other half divided between Ford and GM. It was just less expensive in the long run to use the Cummins and put up with all the cheepness everywhere else. Best truck would be F350 with the Cummins engine and Allison 10 speed.

If you're towing, especially a 5th Wheel, it's a no-brainer to have a diesel. I think the bigger question given the current price & availability climate is if you have a suitable tow rig right now, why spend the ridiculous money to replace it? It doesn't make a great deal of sense if you're not forced into that corner.
I bought a new Tacoma TRD 4WD last August that I'm towing a reasonably sized bumper tow travel trailer. I was able to get away with MSRP pricing and absolutely no extras stacked on top. Back in February, we bought a new RAV4 AWD rig that we had been searching for since the time we bought the TRD. In that period, it went to having trouble just finding one and we were forced to pay $3k over MSRP if we wanted to have it. We did it and walked out with a 2.49% APR on the balance we decided to finance. These are likely to be the last vehicles we will buy in our lifetimes and that's why we went with Toyota this time around. I'd never do it with a GM product and I was forced to give up on the Ford line due to the last 2 being complete failures for us. I'm very happy that a 5th wheel is not in our future and we're happy with our brand new No Boundaries 19.6 couples-sized trailer to sport around the country in while we find a new permanent home almost ANYWHERE out of this Godforsaken hideous state of California!
Hi there! Lucky you to get a new vehicle at MSRP, things certainly seem to be getting worse with the wait times longer AND them arriving de-contented. We sure did NOT want to be backed into a corner so we are glad we bought when we did, versus finding ourselves in a situation where we HAD to buy. Thanks for your comment and enjoy that truck!

Congrats, what a nice truck! I had to do a double take at that outro, always thought Paul leaned towards Ford (didn't he have an F250 before you guys met)? I wouldn't turn down any modern heavy duty truck to be honest; gas, diesel, GMC, Ford, Ram... but you guys sure bought something stunning.
Thanks so much John. And you're right- Paul sold his Ford shortly after we got together. We both have had Fords and we love them. Paul and I were taken with the split tailgate on the GMC and the really helpful cameras. But we wouldn't turn down a Ford either!!!
I pull our Cardinal 3800FL with a 2009 GMC 3500HD SRW, long bed, crew cab. The truck has 198k miles on the Duramax. I love the truck. The driver's seat started to crack. I thought "maybe it's time to look for a new one". Nope!!! Not at those prices. I ordered new OEM leather seat cover replacements. A bit pricey, but not near the price of a new truck. I also had the starter go out (that was fun to fix on my own (not!!!)) and the device that holds the fuel filter. A glow plug replacement here and there, but we live in S. Louisiana, glow plugs can wait til fall. That's all I've dealt with other than the usual services (knocking on wood). I drive a company truck during the week, so my truck sits. Our house didn't cost what a new truck costs!! Glad that you found what you want. I really enjoy your videos.

But your approach makes such good sense. Yes, just buy new seats and repair as needed. You are saving a ton for sure!

What's shocking are the torque specs on the new electric trucks coming to market. Huge! But mileage range is blurry... depends on what you are towing, freezing temps, etc. And the joy of having lazy long lunches while the thing recharges.
Looks to me that you definitely made the right choice. Diesel, definitely, for those giant trailers you like. I'm thinking maybe $250,000 out the door for the whole rig? Time for my GMC dealer to sign me up for a student loan! A 4-year bachelors in Towology! At 78, I'll be drooling before the Feds want their money back. Might be a plan.

We love your videos & how detailed they are! However, this one you left out one huge fact! I'm not sure exactly how much more a diesel cost but I think it's a minimum $10k more! I sure hope something you paid at minimum $10k more for would have a better resale value. Paul said he wouldn't pay the same price for a gas vs diesel with the same mileage. I sure hope not because the diesel cost a lot more. It's like saying I wouldn't pay the same for a car vs a truck. $10k is a lot of money & it takes many years just to break even on the price difference even when full time traveling! Add the extra cost of auto loan interest onto that extra $10k too! I just wanted to bring that up because most people fail to talk about it. Also of course diesel has double the torque. The diesel engine has a huge turbo on it & the gas engine doesn't. If you add a huge turbo to anything it's going to be much faster! I know something to do with compression on large gas motors they don't add turbo for some reason. Once again it just doesn't seem like a fair comparison for people to always be leaving these major factors out.

Most will not keep the diesel as long as it will last! Just like Paul said even though the diese engine will last forever everything bolted to it will not including the interior.
I & my wife get by fine boon docking with our 92 (Chey) Roadtrek 210!. It's only got about 140,000 so it still runs like new. Like me it's showing it's age a little. Oh well. AL

After my 2016 F350 King Ranch SRW Crew Can was stolen in 2020, I replaced it with a 2021 GMC Sierra HD3500 AT4, even with diesel high, I love this truck and we just sold our GD Momentum TH, but I still love the truck. I get 17-19 city, 22-24 hwy, combined avg 19 and when towing our 17K lb RV 9.9-12.5. You can’t beat the Allison 10spd with the 6.6 Duramax

I bought a 2012 f350 in October. Yes it's 10 years old, but it only had 46000 miles on it and was only 45000 out the door. It's an excellent condition and it's a 6.7 diesel. It took me 6 months to find it and I had to drive 300 miles to get it.

i had a 21" wilderness trailer and I pulled it with a 2007 dodge diesel 4 door 8' bed.. I could hardly tell I was pulling anything plus I pulled over a high pass in southern Ca. some cars were pulled over, I just flew by. I sold the trailer and for just driving the low mpg wasn"t worth keeping, but a great truck
The dealers are marking them up so they can have something in inventory and if you want the cheaper price, you have to order what you want.

I work for a utility company (for 4 more days before going FT RVing) and we had 2 large orders of trucks (100ish each) just canceled,so I think the truck shortage is going to take longer than 6 months to get back to normal.
Another benefit of diesel is the engine braking you get...especially in the mountains!
I wanted a GMC, but found that the used rams were about 10k cheaper than a similarly equipped/miles GMC, and I couldn't justify the extra cost even though I'm a GM guy!

Nice truck. My wife and I ended up ordering our truck. We had to wait almost 6 months (picked it up in January). But the benefit, we paid exactly MSRP, got the truck exactly like I wanted, and the truck was almost $10K less than comparables that were on the lot; since like you said, there were people basically lined up to purchase the trucks already on the lot. If you waited for a year, then you should order one to your liking. I ordered a 1 ton dully, GMC Sierra Denali Duramax and got every thing I wanted instead of looking for something at a dealership. It took 6 months for delivery and worth the wait time. I have a 40 ft 5th wheel. This will be my 5th Duramax and 2nd Dully. My son-in-law has a gas 2500 and I out perform him at all times, especially with the Allison 10 speed.

We had been looking for an RV for several years. Everybody knows the decision tree: travel trailer, 5th wheel, class B, class C, or class A. Then you start talking about which manufacturer you want to go with. And then you get to the gas vs diesel question. For us most of the decisions were simple. I want a 5th wheel because I don't like pulling a travel trailer. Wife wants a huge 5th wheel, but will not accept a dually truck. Medical issues left us with the choice of a class A or C. Deciding to go full time RVing pretty much settled things and left us choosing the class A. Having driven a class C up and down many hills in Colorado and South Dakota decided the fuel issue: diesel. There are far more parts of this country that are not flat than there are flat parts.
We picked up a used class A diesel just before the RV prices went.... well, "Balooky" is the best word for it. We have used it part time for a couple of years and will be going full time later this year.
Do I like what has happened to the diesel prices? NO! Would I have change my RV to gas instead? No. Still to many non-flat parts of this country.
I expect that the RV prices are going to come down to something closer to normal in the future. How soon? I don't know, but people simply can't afford the current RV prices.
As for gas/diesel prices, I expect that they are going to come down some as well. These high fuel prices are adding dollars, not cents but dollars, to the price of everything. People aren't going to be able to purchase necessities pretty soon. What will need to be changed at that point is going to be up to the American people. I hope they choose well.

Had a similar experience last year with buying a 2022 Silverado 2500HD LT with the Duramax. Ordered truck first weekend of August. Truck arrived first weekend of October. Dealer gave me a $1000 discount for accessories. It needed running boards (my sweetheart is "vertically challenged"), a hard, quad-fold tonneau cover and a bed liner (all dealer installed, of course). At 12,100 miles, the engine is breaking in. I bought this truck for the horse power, torque, towing capacity, and fuel price, too. No fancy bells and whistles. Just a solid towing vehicle for our trailer for New Mexico and Colorado mountain towing (which is where we like to vacation). Not happy the diesel is so high, though, but it has been a solid performer.
Edit: Definitely glad we went with the diesel truck. We're traveling New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado and the truck is performing much better than we had hoped. Diesel prices have moderated a bit and that helps, but the average mileage towing our trailer is about 12 - 15 mpg so far, much, much better than I expected (too used to my old gas-fueled truck, I guess). Doesn't slow down on long grades. Glad we got it so far.
Congrats on your Silverado! We loved our 2500HD. It really served us well for the 80,000 miles we had it. In fact, that's why we went with GMC (versus Ford, RAM), we were super pleased. Looking forward to seeing you on the road!

The only reason we got the truck so quickly is the lower trim level. The dealer had several 2021 High Country models but they were heart attack expensive. We have a long trip planned later this summer so we are looking forward to it in spite of the high fuel prices. Thanks for the tip on the fuel-discount app! There are several out there but I have been researching them as I am unsure whether you have to be a commercial trucker before you can get them. Have y'all tried any other fuel discount cards?

My husband after test driving and researching, settled on the GMC Sierra Diesel . Luckily we bought it last fall with everything he wanted. He is very happy with his decision. I too am very happy because the side runners pop out everytime I open the door making it easier to get in and out (yes I am very short). Gas prices and Diesel prices are up, but so is everything else. So we do what we did before, consolidate trips (planning routes if needed), shop wisely and remember life is too short so enjoy everyday with your loved ones, we'll get through this.

I ordered a Ford F-150 hybrid Powerboost Larait for around 69k. Ford offered 1k off and I used a family member’s D-plan, my final number is 61k. We were very surprised but extremely happy. Ordered April 2022 and have received three different build dates the last being July 11. The Powerboost has a 7.2 inboard generator with a 30 amp plug, with a full tank of gas we can boondock for 7-8 days. What a game changer, thanks Ford! The tow rating will be between 12-13k.

Beautiful gorgeous truck. There’s nothing like those GMC trucks. My husbands a (was) pipeline welder so he has a 1 ton, I have the 3/4 ton diesel Chevrolet Silverado. We love them both. Mine only has 50,000 miles on it. Still smells new. Yours is so nice. Congrats.
People need to also consider the altitude at which you will be pulling. At sea level standard atmosphere pressure is 14.7 psi. The higher up you go that pressure becomes less. Which means a naturally aspirated engine (no turbo) will lose approximately 3% for every 1000 feet increase in altitude. Turbos maintain manifold pressure even at high altitudes. They still do lose a little power but very little. At high altitudes always get a truck with a turbo.

Ordered a 2022 F450 Lariat Ultimate in August 2021 and finally got it seven months later, BUT I got it for invoice, thousands under MSRP. Switched from a 2019 F350 dually diesel. Pulling a 2020 Grand Design Solitude zs-Class 2930RL-R. I'd never pull it, or any fifth wheel, with anything less than a one-ton, and a dually is so much better.

My experience with a late 90's diesel truck is the diesel gets about 40-50% better fuel economy than the same truck in gas (I had both). So paying a 20% premium on diesel is still cheaper than gas. That said, maintenance costs for diesel are WAY more expensive than gas.

The biggest thing to mention here is the fuel efficiency while towing. Yes, diesel can be over $1 more per gallon, but may give you 5 to 8 miles more per gallon. Over 20k miles, you could actually save more than 1k all while towing with more efficiency.

We bought our 2019 GMC 3500HD Diesel with the understanding that we’d probably be holding on to it for the next 20 years. It runs great so far. We’re completely happy with our choice despite the high fuel cost. That said. The day Toyota builds a Tundra with a Cummins Diesel and an Alison Transmission, I’m in.

We bought a new 21’ Denali 2500HD gasser in June 2021. Towed our 2930RL Solitude with out any issues. We live in the Lowcountry of SC so we don’t have a lot of mountain travels. We have taken it up into the Smokies a couple of times and we could definitely tell we were pulling 14k pounds. The truck was priced over MSRP, but they honored our GM supplier discount so I ended up buying at MSRP. We did just sell it to buy a used 21’ Denali 3500 HD diesel with 10k miles on it though. That we ended up getting for 4k less than a comparable 22 and it isn’t missing any of the electronic items. We definitely prefer our diesel over the gas. We just don’t prefer the fuel price difference!

I leased my SUN 3 years ago. When it was time to turn it in came I shopped for a new one. Prices are insane. So, since I got my lease and buyout price before Covid my buyout was low and that’s what I did.
I just bought a new gas F250. 7.3 with the 10 speed automatic. We tow a travel trailer that is max weight 6725#. I was able to take advantage of the retiree pricing and even got a $3000 rebate with it.. I ordered it in early February and took delivery in early June. I’m well inside my GCWR rating. The gas model should be the right choice for our rig.

You can’t always fit into the gas lanes at a gas station. You have to be able to use the truck lanes when you’re big. They don’t sell regular gas in the truck lanes. You could encounter situations where you would have to unattach your RV and gas the truck up separately.

Good evening folks. I was told "if you don't buy it, someone else will. One of the local Toyota dealers has nothing new, only used trucks. My opinion, for the weight and the type of RVing that you guys do I would stick with a diesel.
for anyone that constantly pulls a heavy trailer diesel is the way to go. The gas engines just won't hold up to the heat stress put on them in that application.

Ram Cummins owner here, but have considered going to gas. I had a problem a couple of times, and there were no competent diesel mechanics nearby. Luckily the truck decided to correct itself (it's an '03 and has always gotten us back home).....so we did not need emergency repairs. I am capable with wrenches, so I replaced possible causes of the problems when I got back home.
So I would consider the scarcity of good diesel mechanics to be a major consideration along with the other reasons mentioned in this video.

It’s the electronics that have been added in the last handful of years - literally 1000 more sensors that if they fail - you are not driving
The alternator and starter etc is nothing to worry about - that’s why your 2000s and early 2010s are higher. New things are not better, just look at vehicle recalls in 2010 vs now

surprised you didnt bring up the extra complexity of diesel emissions equipment, diesel exhaust fluid, and regen cycles. Thats a big thing that makes gas more appealing than modern diesel trucks nowadays. Also its a big difference when comparing modern diesel trucks to pre emission equipment diesel trucks.

Things we didn't mention is that diesels come with engine braking making going down mountain passes much easier and safer. Yes, 2 months ago I traded for a new truck. I don't need the capacity that you need because mine is a very small trailer. I could not find any trucks available except Nissan. It is gas and I absolutely love it. I have had Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and Toyota. I love above any of them this Nissan. It has a higher rating than others for low repairs. It is a solid truck. But like you said, there was NO dealing. But I love to drive this truck. It gets 23 mpg and 19 when pulling.

Bought the 2022 Denali 1500 three months ago. First dealership; 5K+ “market adjustment”, walked out. Second dealership 10K+ market adjustment, walked out. At both locations, neither said anything until we got inside. Third dealership (called first), no market adjustment, but unless paying cash, I had to finance through one of their banks! On the flip side they gave me 40K for my 5 year old Lexus GX460 with 60K miles, which I would never have gotten before all this nonsense. Love the Denali. Congratulations, enjoy!!

Yes people have even paying msrp or above msrp. At one time Chevy and ford told the dealerships to stop doing this . The dealership told cooperate you can’t tell us what prices we should sell vehicles. Then cooperate came back and said well we can take away your franchise tag. I haven’t heard any thing else on this matter. It’s a great time to sell your used trucks but not to buy . This is going on all over the country .

We are starting out as new full time RVers. We just bought a 2022 GMC 3500 diesel. We had to call all over our state and found one that they had on order so we had to put money down to hold it so we could buy it when it did come in. We also have a 2018 GMC Denali gas burner. Diesel gets way better mileage per gallon.

My wife and I own a 2022 Grand Design Reflection 150RD 5th Wheel. We pull it with a 2021 RAM 2500 6.4L (gas) and have had no issues. Our first lesson learned - anything above 65 mph does nothing but chew up gas…and I mean quick. We live in Central Texas, so our highways and roads are relatively flat. The truck does lack torque compared to a diesel , but we’re not climbing passes or steep terrain. I think Ford has a 7.3L F-250 Godzilla gas motor that came out in 2021. Not throwing politics into this discussion to trigger anyone, but gas/diesel is about to skyrocket in the U.S. with the Russian and OPEC+ deal that was struck just recently. Be prepared.

I went with a ford f350 srw with the 7.3 gas. No problem pulling my 11000 lb trailer.
Traded in my F250 with a power stroke and it has worked out really well as the maintenance is a 1/4 of the cost of a diesel.
I believe Ford and GM have the same transmission. It is a branded Allison transmission not built by them I believe.

Hi guys. We bought a new 2022 chev 3500 Duramax High Country in March for MSRP, I told them I wouldn't pay the mark up ($10K) and after a bit of discussion they dropped the mark up. At the time they had 3 3500's (2 LTZ's and the one High Country) on the lot. I feel fortunate to get the truck for MSRP. I was in the same boat, towing my 310 GK with a 2500.
Diesel gets more mpg than gas and have better torque and the engine last longer. I had a 2007 Silverado, long bed, Duramax, great truck

I totally rebuilt my 2002 Chevrolet S 10 I don’t pull no trailers well except for maybe a lawn trailer nothing heavy I put like 7000 miles on it now that I have rebuilt it runs beautiful might not be the prettiest truck on the road where is cheaper than buying a new truck I expect to drive this truck another 20 years

We have the exact same trailer pulling it with a 2020 3500 Duramax. The power, transmission and not to forget the exhaust brake. It’s just the perfect setup. Love your channel
We bought a 1500 Sierra Duramax last year for below MSRP. We just took a 3000 mile trip with our Rockwood 22 ft mini lite and had a DEF injector failure. We lost 5 days of camping while we looked for and waited on a dealer with the part. We got home and immediately had another emission problem with a bad knock sensor. Both were warranty repairs. The price of DEF is also increasing. We burn one jug of DEF for every 2 tanks of fuel (only 24 gal tank) when pulling. That’s much more expensive than gas. I’m hoping that DEF to fuel ratio will go down after repairs but haven’t seen it yet. We love the truck’s ride but are not happy with the diesel this far. We tried the truck pumps but with a 24 gal tank kept getting vapor locks making fill ups take forever.
Paul says that DEF ratio sounds about right. We, too, burn a lot when we're towing. Paul's first truck, a Ford, had a small tank but he never had vapor lock with it. I wonder if you could switch that out for a bigger tank.
i'm one of those odd guys who keeps his trucks till end of life but i don't like newer trucks so i had this idea to update my truck which i've had for quite a long time now ,,being mechanically inclined and able to do the work myself i tore my 1983 GMC 3500 completely down to the bare frame and repaired all of it's rust and 38 years of damage ,,it was ready for a new engine i prefer a manual transmission and managed to find the right replacement engine and transmission ,,my new engine is a 2004 model 8.3 liter 450HP cummins that makes 1300 pound feet of torque ,,pulled from a crashed motorhome bought at an auction and a 13 speed manual from a heavy truck salvage yard ,,the result of all my work including replacing the factory springs and axle with a heavier unit from an F450 that has disc brakes it also has air ride ,,i now have live air courtesy of the air brake compressor that came with the engine ,this helps with air ride and the transmission ,,,my new truck cost me a few hundred hours to build and under $10K the result is impressive too because i have a 44ft 5th wheel ,,not new but in perfect condition for something 44 years old ,,and it'll run down the road at 70 with no complaints ,,and it's old enough i have no BS emission controls to worry about

@@LizAmazing I grew up on a farm in southwest iowa and my grandfather was one of those guys who made do with what he had and i'm pretty much the same way ,, i've always liked building stuff and can make pretty much anything mechanical run ,,as i got older that has included building trucks from spare parts ,,being almost 50 now , i'm still too cheap to buy a new truck ,,my 39 yr old chevy aptly named Frankenstein will be around for a long time to come ,,i should also say this was not my first engine swap in a truck ,,my first one was 1988 ford ranger that i rebuilt in 1996 ,it also had a diesel engine swap my brothers nicknamed it the beast i replaced the V6 engine with a 4 cylinder cummins and a 6 speed from an F350 in the 24 years i have had it it's done a lot of miles,, over 400,000 in fact ,, it's seen 26 states and 6 canadian provinces and been to alaska 3 times
I got rid of my diesel and went with a 7.3L gas, matched with a 430 rear end. You Have to take the rear gear into account any time you pull because it has a direct tie to weight and towing ability of a vehicle.

We just bought a 2022 Ford F-350 crew cab, long bed diesel pick-up. It was the only one they had on the lot and they had JUST gotten it in. We bought it even though it had some things we didn't want and didn't have some things we did want. We paid MSRP, but if we hadn't, there were buyers waiting in line. We missed the torque of the diesel and went back to it. Kept our gas pick-up for around town.
Congrats on your new diesel F350! Same situation with us, dealer was not motivated to work with us on price as they had a line of buyers. Yes, there is a huge difference in torque between gas and diesel, glad you went back to it. Happy camping!
I have a 2015 3500 Denali and decided last winter to get a new truck. Went with a Ford F-350 and ordered in mid December. Absolutely no negotiation at all anywhere, at least no extras. It’s now July 7th and it will finally be here on the 18th. To get it any sooner I’d have cut out all the extras. Dealers have all the power now and I think the manufacturers are going to keep it this way. Not much overhead and no discounts they win all around. Hope I made the right decision but only time will tell. Thanks for the video

We owned a Denali until recently; sold it to a dealer and bought a small class C. We plan to leave our very large Solitude in a wonderful R V park & use it as our base camp. We had a hard time giving up the Denali but we’re a little older than you so we think we made the correct decision. We paid $62,000 originally for our Denali with hitch & longterm warranty. We put 108,000 miles on it traveling all over the U S A. Dealer still gave us $45,000 for it! It was a great vehicle!!!
We have a 2011 Nissan Titan with 87k miles, I wanted to buy my husband a new truck because I just paid off my car, he emphatically said no. He bought a car shield warrantee so that we would have something to help us in case of any problems. It's paid for, and we are only pulling 4615 pounds and will rarely use/drive it for anything but pulling the rv on vacations. So for us this will work.

Food for thought. We’ve decided to continue car camping for the foreseeable future, at least until we decide we don’t want to sleep on an air mattress anymore, but we are looking at campers in the next five years or so and will need a truck by then.

Now. All trucks are costly. I had a 2010 platinum ford truck with 150,000. It was an amazing truck. Looked like new when I sold it. Original price $75,000. I sold it for $30,000.

Sorry I have a 2021 at4 3500 with the 6.6 gas . It sucks when towing . My trailer is weighting in loaded at 10000 pounds. This weekend on a 550 km round trip I burned 470$ in gas at 2.04 a litre. With cruse on at 100 km I’m at 28 litres per 100 km. I’m 6 mounts now waiting for my dirtymax to arrive. Im only getting 550 km on a tank empty. My son in law has a 2022 Denali dirtymax and he is getting 1200 km per tank.safe travels
You're only option to get what you want is to order. Yes, it takes months to get your vehicle, but you won't have to deal with any of the "dealer add-on" b.s. As for diesel vs gas I switched from a diesel Ram 2500 to a gas Ram 2500 and couldn't be happier. CONSIDERABLY less maintenance costs, cheaper to drive unloaded and fuel economy while towing is a wash at 9-10 mpg for both. My other complaint about modern diesels is they're always in the shop for something. Before mine needed injectors ($2000 job) or the fuel pump exploded ($8000 repair) I traded it in. EGR and DPF issues kept mine in the shop longer than I cared for. Then randomly it would go in to limp mode due to DEF system faults that they never could fix. I can't be pulling 10,000 lbs up a 6-8% grade and go in to limp mode. That's just dangerous.

When we had to get a new pick up, due to an accident, we had no choices. There was one diesel pick up in the whole southern Oregon area. Two things I didn’t want….white pick up and a Ram. I got a white Ram.
So sorry. That's actually why we bought. We didn't want to find ourselves in a situation where we had to get a truck. Like you, I don't like white and am not fond of the Ram either (based on looks). I guess ya just gotta be grateful that you found one as crazy as the market is these days. Safe travels.
