It's been a minute since I heard this song. Forgot how beautiful and poignant it is. Sara's voice is stunning, and the words just hit you in the gut. Some great lines, as you pointed out. Love, love, love it.

This musical is based on a very quirky 2007 independent film also called “Waitress”. It’s darkly funny. With Keri Russel and Nathan Fillion and Andy Griffith. - The lead character is a waitress and pie baker struggling with her life. This song perfectly represents her.
Aha. Fist half of the song I was sure she was singing about her new life as a populair singer and all that comes with it. Made me worry about het health… Nice to know the context.
@@Astridsscribbles Not autobiographical. Written specifically for the show. The references to aprons and patrons, a man who can’t love, the life growing inside her, all baked up in a beautiful pie, are very specific to plot. But like most very well written songs, they more specific it is, the more universal. This is a great example.
"Sometimes you're so busy living, you forget how to live" No truer words Lyle, and a good reminder to slow down, fret less, and love more. I'm so glad you like her. She is brilliant, complicated, and ever so quirky (my favorite part of Sara). I never understood the story of "Yellow Brick Road" until I heard Sara sing it. Sara wrote this for the musical waitress. You need to watch the original lead from the musical sing this song Jessie Mueller is her name (I'm pretty sure anyway). You can also watch the Shoshanna bean version, and Jeremy Jordan does a fantastic version of this song as well. There are even some great not famous people performances of this song. You could listen to every single person sing this song and pick up something different in their telling of the story.
This is such an anthem and it shows the shift in the characters trajectory in the musical.
Shoshana Bean broke my heart with this song.

Mueller was the opener, she was then replaced by Sara, then Kathrine McPhee took on a full set- the role has been played by AMAZING women.

Sara Barielles has such a unique style. Both in song writing and vocal interpretation. This is a heartbreaking song.
Speaking of John Legend and woman songwriters with great voices, I suggest Faouzia featuring John Legend doing “Minefields”. The official video is beautiful, but the lyric video can be substituted. Or the live performance from The Kelly Clarkson show or the Today show.
Thanks for actually listening to the lyrics. A lot of videos where vocal coaches are making comments, miss the mark when listening. They hem in on pitch and technical matters, but to me, they just don't get how unbelievable good she not only as a vocalist, but even more importantly a songwriter. She's going to make the songwriters hall of fame for sure.

This is one of my all time favorite songs.
Love this song. Love Sara Bareilles. She is so underrated. She is so good.
I do love Sara's voice, but I only know a few of her songs. One of them is another somber song, but it's so good. The name of it is "Gravity". The other two I think of right away are "Love Song" and "Brave". The latter of those two has a very good message for anyone who is struggling with anything or anyone. She was actually a judge for season 3 of the Sing Off (the year PTX was on).
This is more stately than somber. The character finally decides to fight at this point in the show and this is her anthem.

I assume you know that she wrote the music and the lyrics for her Broadway show called Waitress.
Sara was also a judge on the Sing Off when PTX won.
Her version of Yellow Brick Road was so good that Sir Elton John, the original artist, gave her a rare compliment and actually sang a live duet with her.
Anything by Sara is amazing but Gravity is my favorite along with her performance in Jesus Christ Superstar.
Jon Legend was Jesus in this movie.
