Vocal ANALYSIS of my FAVORITE YOUTUBE VIDEO! Sara Bareilles singing "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"

- Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" as performed by Sara Bareilles is one of my all time favorite videos on CZcams. It's written about, you guessed it, the yellow brick road in Wizard of Oz, and I'm here for that! Written about giving up a life of opulence for one of simplicity in a rural setting, this song hits all my feels, and Sara's performance gives me the chills.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Sara Bareilles perform one of her all time favorite songs "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

You should react to Cynthia Erivo stand up official video and I’m here. They’re very powerful song 🎶
Before you retired you tube, you must check out most outstanding singer CAKRA KHAN.
Thank you
If I may make a suggestion. I believe you would enjoy listening to one of the most respected voices in music. That would be Sabastian Bach of Skid Row. He has performed on Broadway as well as fronting a huge rock band in the late 80s early 90s.
Check out Emily Keener’s version from The Voice.
Ok, well done. Now I have to pause and listen to the OV.
Elton John actually said that he had never heard this song covered so well. He's actually a fan of hers
"and made it her own." To the point that "her version" started to get covered as much as the original, like Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's ukulele version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" got covered so much.
And he decided to do a duet with her, and chose her song Gravity instead. He didn't want to touch her version of Yellow Brick Road!
Sara B is so underrated it’s a crime. She is so talented it’s a damn shame she doesn’t get more critical acclaim.
I know, man. She's obviously extremely popular and successful and she still feels terribly underrated as if she's just some rando that had a couple catchy pop hits. This came into one of my randomized Spotify playlists about 6 months ago, and I listened to it about 50 times in a week. And not to mention she's playing the piano the whole time she's singing this. That's not easy at all. Trust me, I can sing badly and play piano badly, but when I tried this one, I had to choose which one I wanted to butcher. I couldn't do them both. And she did them both amazingly.
She's one of the greatest songwriters in recent decades. A generational talent for sure
I actually met and served her personally as a bartender. She did a drunken karaoke with her “Waitress” troupe, and let me tell you. She is one of the nicest people in the world. And her vocals, even with/especially with lots of drink are AMAZING
How many times have you sold this story
Bro, I met here a few times. She's a sweet woman. Her family are amazing people. I've hung solely with her and she's a normal chick. Better than normal as an artist. Maybe about 10 years ago. I moved to her home area. Great person. Not a dick at all
She really seems a gracefull woman
Why is it no surprise that she’s the nicest? 🙌🏻
This lady’s giddiness and excitement about Sara’s singing is just as good as the topic itself! Love Sara Bareilles! On my bucket list to see her live ❤
One of my favourite performances on CZcams. Her piano accompaniment to her own vocal is impeccable. Elton John said this one of the best ever covers of any of his songs, and her delivery really makes us realise what a superbly poetic lyric Bernie Taupin wrote.
Another eye-watering performance at the piano is her own song, She Used To Be Mine, performed live on the Graham Norton show.
Sara is from my hometown of Eureka, CA - our families know each other, went to the same church, her sister babysat me, etc. We couldn't be happier for, or prouder of, her and her achievements up here in Humboldt County. Her talent is absolutely _stunning!_ 🤦♂️
PS Another great video! Glad I found your channel a couple months ago 😁
Thanks for that information!! I live in Eureka as well! Awesome stuff😁
Mike Patton was also born in Eureka, California :)
@@shkr5 Indeed! I went to school with one of his cousins... some great talent outta here 😁
Had no idea she was from Eureka, but that makes me love her even more!
I’ve listened to this vid probably 5000 times. When I first heard it, I feel like I lost my mind. Cried over it many times, and never thought anyone else found it as insanely hauntingly technically perfect as I did, but apparently I have ❤️
The key, the tempo, the arrangement, the “shadows” and the overall presentation is so incredible, it’s something I’ll never tire of listening to.
Okay, I confess to not having heard Sara B or this song before...but I love the original, and I'm blown away with Sara's take on it.
It's not unlike how Johnny made Trent's "Hurt" into its own phenomenon, bigger than either would have thought.
And of equal value, Elizabeth, is your sharing how Sara's performance affects you so much, too. It's a gift, it's a lesson, it teaches us how to experience music! Thank you.
Potential idea for your YT series: analysis of the vocal progression of singers throughout their careers. What changed, got better/worse/different?
did you see the two wilson sister reviews? Young rockers and and as elder spokeswomen of rock covering led zepplin...
She's done it with dio, but maybe not quite as directly as you are thinking about.
First time I've heard her perform...thank you. This moved me internally.
Pretty much what Ken Tamplin does on his channel.
Linda Ronstadt would be an excellent candidate.
Her performance of "Love on the Rocks" from this same concert is incredible.
She’s so fantastic live, her cover of “Chandelier” is the same with the haunting factor. Only on ukulele. And her belting. She gives Sia a run for her money.
OK, you got me: I _have_ to find this! Is it on CZcams?
@@erichbrough6097 lol, multiple versions, my favorite is the Virginia one.
She's always been extremely underrated to me beautiful voice
Sara Bareilles has been a favorite of mine for years. I believe my first introduction to her was her live cover of "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay." After hearing that I discovered her large catalogue of incredibly well-written original songs and other magnificent covers like this one. Thanks for sharing this and your love for it.
Thank you for reminding me of my first stop-everything moment hearing her singing "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay."
Sara is my queen. I've loved her music since 2008 and this is TRULY one of my favorite videos ever.
I can't believe this, but this is the first time I've ever listening to Sara Bareilles. I'm blown away with her vocal style and music arrangement.
I'm a huge Elton John fan, and I honestly love this cover. She made it her own and it was performed beautifully.
czcams.com/video/eAti8JNmJi8/video.html another approach to the same song.
She is a criminally underrated vocalist and an extraordinarily talented writer. It makes sense that she's found success on Broadway as a songwriter and occasional star.
For another great performance of hers, check out this one with Ben folds .

Sara Bareilles has been on my playlist for years. Played her album on so many working nights ( movie theatre / bar) ❤️ 🎼
Sara is a super highly underrated performer that can bring out a super raw performance. Her covers are absolutely amazing, and I thing that she should be much more popular than she is. Love Sara’s humor and interpretation of various songs.
Elizabeth is so terrifically descriptive and uncanny in articulating the emotional nuances of vocals. This is like good therapy, where now I’m able to understand exactly why I feel the way I do when I hear something that moves me.
The one thing I can say that's so remarkable about her voice, she sounds like she's singing it directly at you. Something about her voice always hits something very personally deep in your soul. Even when she's being funny she still carries you along for the ride. She is just ethereal and grounding to hear. Few singers make me feel like I can see an exact color or smell the very earth by only hearing their voice. Emotionally fracturing.
Well said.
This performance swept me off my feet. I still cannot believe how someone can control her voice like she does! And I absolutely love the way you intensely listen to it and comment on the details!!! Love your channel!
It’s the best vocal performance I’ve ever heard.
I’ve loved Sara Bareilles since Love Song. It’s an amazing song. I didn’t think she’d make it because she wasn’t pushed onto radio like lots of other artists. But I’m glad she survived.
Her music is some of the best.
She sings this with all the emotion of all the Bernies and Eltons across the world. Thanks for sharing your excitement.
Love Sara Bareilles, can't wait!!
I'm so glad you'll be calling attention to this performance! It's also one of my favorite performance videos on YT. I think many people will have heard this version first from Angelina Jordan doing it on AGT, but that was actually a cover of a cover (Sara B's version of GYBR).
Thank you Elizabeth. Sara has been a favourite for a while. While “reactions” are great, especially the gratification of seeing someone’s first response to something you’ve liked for a long time, analysis like this is equally valuable and satisfying as a learning experience. More videos like this one are more than welcome.
I've never heard of Sara Bareilles before. After listening to this cover, Sara did it justice. It's hard to do a cover of such a classic song and an artist like Elton John and make it come up so well.
She is so amazing, I am excited to bring this version out to all of you!
She’s one of those singers that sound as good or better when they perform. She’s hilarious and brilliant.
She played her song gravity as a duet with Elton John. And if I remember correctly he compliments this cover in the video and she says that this was a dream come true. It’s very wholesome.
@@TheCharismaticVoice Metal Mark 12 said exactly what I wanted to say.
Well, it was a bit of a challenge for me to take it all in at the first time. (I guess I also should've listened to the whole performance before the premiere.) I still kind of liked the first verse and the chorus with its different rendition. I started to really like it near the end of the performance. Now I know I'll be listening to it again many times. Her vocal performance was fantastic but I also grew to love the changes she added to the song.
I want to thank you for letting me know about her. Take care and I hope you're having a wonderful day.
Metal Mark, she has a Broadway show she wrote and I think performs in??
Her stripped down version of Gravity is and always will be my favorite performance of hers. It makes me cry every time. She definitely has that once in a lifetime kind of voice
Gravity is one of my very favorites.
So glad you chose Sara Bareilles and specifically this song! One of my all time favs!! Would love to see you have some Brandi Carlile on your channel!!
I absolutely love this performance. Her performs with Ben Folds singing Once Upon Another Time is also outstanding!!
Awesome Voice, I would love to see you do a reaction to Linda Ronstadt, in my opinion probably the greatest female vocalist between her rock and blues and Spanish and American standards opera Pirates of Penzance Her work with Trio and Aaron Neville I think she’s just absolutely amazing
I agree! Linda Ronstadt had a huge impact on music. Her ability to sing any style, and her appreciation of the different forms of music, made her beloved to all the musicians who worked with her. From country, rock, blues, jazz, and opera, she did it all, and did it perfectly.
Don’t Know Much… Gaaaah! Gets me every time.
This performance is so powerful, will tear up every time. I love that you analysed this one😊
Sara has a quality of making most of her covers haunting. For those who haven't heard her cover the song Yellow by Coldplay, i highly recommend it. very similar to this in the sparse, haunting piano.
I love Sara Bareilles and have an affinity for female singer-songwriter-pianists. Another highly emotive artist that I love is Tory Amos. Her song Winter is so full of emotion and it makes me cry just like Sara’s performance here. Love it!
i also have an affinity for female singer-songwriter-pianists and female singer-songwriters in general. Funny you mention that Tori Amos song, reminds me of the song Winter Song that Sara did with Ingrid Michaelson. What are some of your other favorites? Mine are Diane Birch, Regina Spektor, Tristan Prettyman, Duffy, A Fine Frenzy.
@@rocioiribe5841, it isn’t enough to simply listen to Tori Amos sing, you get such a stunned feeling from watching her live performances. I also like Nina Simone, Fiona Apple, Carole Welsman and Laura Izibor. Now, when it comes to a more rock feel I adore Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde. She has the voice, song writing skills and plays bass. In her prime she could wail the song Heal It Up and I always wished I could sing like her!
Winter is quite possibly my favourite song ever written. Fiona Apple is another who has torn me apart emotionally my whole life.
This performance makes my knees weak from how many shivers went through them! You could see by the faces in the audience that many feel just the same.
Have watched this dozens of times myself and it never gets old. Easily my favorite cover of all time. Very talented and blessed human being.
The Charismatic Voice reacts to my favorite metal bands, and now reacts to another of my favorite artists Sara Bareilles, it's awesome!!! my favorite Sara's song is "Satellite call", that song is in my favorites on spotify, it's between nightwish and Killswitch engage haha ... I can't wait!! 🤘🤘🤘
same here! i'm a metalhead but also a huge fan of Sara Bareilles :D

I love how she puts the emphasis in a different spot each time through the chorus.
Thank you so much for covering this! Like you, I've played this video possibly hundreds of times and I still get an emotional reaction and sense of awe at how perfectly she delivers every syllable. This is the video I choose when I try to explain to someone just how great a "cover" can be. Your analysis somehow made me appreciate this even more and it will probably be back near the top of my playlist again for a while. Thanks again!!!
I love how much you love music. It's beautiful and inspiring!
I too love this performance; I, too, have watched/listened to it, like, A LOT. And yet, here I am, learning more about why it affects me so, and crying right along with you. Thanks for sharing your insights, and your talent, and your passion, with all of us out here on the 'Net, Elizabeth.
I LOVE THIS! Even Sir Elton felt she made it her own, a different story and feeling.
Wow! This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard her sing! I love her voice too. So distinctive and emotional.
I would love to listen to you breakdown "She used to be mine". . . . and maybe five or six other Sara Bareilles songs.
Love all of your videos, love that you do metal and songwriters alike. I live listening to your perspective on these artists. Wondering if you would ever do Brandi Carlisle, she has such a great voice and unique. You should do her song "the joke" the live acoustic version on Howard stern is amazing or her with the highway women doing a cover of Fleetwood Mac song " the chain". Awesome video can't wait to see more.
Tears roll down my face every time I hear her version. I have also watched this hundreds of time. Her voice building up almost makes me levitate. It’s new for me each time. Soooo glad you shared your view. Thank you!
I just wanted to say thank you for your videos. Your happy energy and joy in examining music is like a virtual anti-depressant. I always find myself smiling along with you during your reviews.
Always love hearing Sarah sing. I think she was one of the very good parts of the NBC live Jesus Christ Superstar as Mary Magdalene done a couple of years ago. For vocalize have you checked out The Manhattan Transfer ? They are a vocal jazz quartet that actually did a whole album of Jazz charts they added words to. Good stuff.
Her "I Don't Know How To Love Him" was spectacular. Would love to see an analysis of that by Elizabeth as it's another song where Sara portrays the emotion and conflict in the song to perfection.
You should do a reaction to Sarah's song "Gravity " she hits a note in the studio version which gives me goosebumps everytime
What a great version of this song. The arrangement gave me chills immediately. Thanks for sharing!
Yes all of this!!! I love the space she gives right before the long vocal part. I love that beautiful rest there. This song was already haunting and beautiful and this takes it up to another level. I felt every second. Perfection. Thank you for your reaction and review.
Oh! Oh! Oh! If you do another Sara Bareilles song, might I suggest Once Upon Another Time (the one with Ben Folds and Caroline Shaw)? Such a powerful performance with the National Symphony Orchestra!
YES YES YES YES YES. It’s so chilling (as in goosebumps) and just overall perfect. She always amazes me with how she’s completely in tune with band/orchestra.
Yes to once upon another time. Sara is the bomb.
YES again. Being able to hold the room on her own like that is a fantastic show of her skills.
I was thinking the same. I have it queued up to play next.
H u g e Sara B fan here - her voice is _so_ gutsy, sweet and heartfelt. Bernie and Sir Elton almost could have written this song for her, with its defiant and inspirational lyrics. You should react to the live version of 'Brave' for sure! 🙌
And btw, that final wailing belt on 'Road', where she modified partway through toward the sound of 'ran' - holy crap!!! 🤯🔥🔥😭😭❣❣
This song softens my heart!!!! She brings so much emotion and compassion in her voice!!! You
Sara Bareilles & Elizabeth Zharoff: Two wonderful woman so immediately connected to their message that it gets you every time!
I wonder if Elizabeth could get her for a Tea Time interview...
For Sara, I'd go with her live performances on Live From Here (a public radio show, but they've got videos on CZcams). Someone Who Loves Me and Saint Honesty are particularly great. Also on that show (you'll thank me later) watch the videos with Rachael Price.
One more with Sara. If you want to get absolute shivers down your spine, watch the Kennedy Center video of her singing "Once Upon Another Time". She sings a Capella... alone... for about half the song and you could literally hear a pin drop if one had been. This is a MUST listen, even if you don't react to it.
Lol, I think every Sara fan has requested the Ben Folds Kennedy Center performance. The harmonies are so unexpected, even though they’re standing right behind her it’s a, “where the hell did you come from?” moment. And St. Honesty is amazing. I have one of the pieces of paper that fell from that concert.
Thanks for sharing this, please share more often your own favorites! It is so nice to see you so involved in this and you give of so much positive, happy energy. That is what music should do to people: touch them emotionally and overflow the senses. Sara is indeed amazing and this performance of this song double so. The audience is dead silent almost afraid to breathe.
All your explanations are very interesting and helps me better listen to artists and will probably help me listen better to my own singing as well.
You might enjoy listening (not per se reacting to) the version Angelina Jordan did on America Got Talent.
I get chills every single time I listen to this or watch the video. She's my favorite artist ever! She's one of our times underated singer and songwriter with the ability to evoke all the feels. Thank you for covering this video!
I have heard this before also - but it just never gets old, just a masterful, emotional performance! Like a warm blanket!!
Anyone want to vote up a redo of her doing a good acoustic Simple Man version with Brent singing like he means it? The one she did was such a disservice to what he can do.

Thanks for sharing Elizabeth! We all have our own moments and songs that can bring us to tears every time. It's very refreshing to me, a total noob, to see a pro like you going through a similar process as the emotions hit. Plus you're able to explain WHY her performance is, to you, so overwhelming. Great video from you (like usual)!
There are a couple of other versions of her covering this, but this one... holy cow. Love that you took the time with it. There's so much here, but for me, the haunting, longing, hurt throughout the tune turning to "I've finally decided my future lies..." at the end. You can actually HEAR the smile of confidence curl across her lips.
I’d like to see an analysis of Tori Amos. I was a big fan of hers back in the 90’s. There’s a live performance of her song “Winter” from 91/92 that I find particularly moving. - m.czcams.com/video/KWmETxWM0h0/video.html
I second the Tori Amos recomedaation.
I'll third it.
Yes yes yes you need to go down the Tori Amos rabbit hole for sure!
Fourth it! Although I'd prefer to see her do the Live From New York version of Winter because it's so insanely expressive. By the way, Jamie, did you think of Tori because the opening piano notes on this Sara performance sounds a little like Hey Jupiter?
@@ruinsane100 Yes the Live in NY is a great version!
Can you also do one of eltons performances of this song from back in the day? There are so many amazing live performances he’s done of this song
Oh. My. God. So, I found you a few months ago, in a kinda backwards way. I had just been to a show that Sleep Token opened and I was immediately enamored. I fell down their rabbit hole, which led me to Will and his Hypnosis cover and that video led me to you. I have always felt like a freak for my reactions to music. My friends would look at me like a complete freak when we would be listening to something powerful, not even necessarily sad, and I would have tears streaming down my face. Took me a while to get to this video, because I’m a metal and rock fan first, but good music is good music, regardless of genre. She hit Road before the second chorus, and I was damn near sobbing. Then I look at you and you’re barely holding it in. That made me tear up more! Thank you for the comradery. Your channel is the most warm and refreshing thing I’ve experienced in a long time. Thank you, truly. I do love music more every day. 😘
I LOVE Sara's voice and use of technique and how she engages the audience when performing. She's fantastic 🙂
I'm not one to normally request stuff but I want to throw out a suggestion. You should do a reaction to one of Leonard Cohen's songs. I don't even mind which one, he has so many, but his voice is so incredibly unique I'd love to hear your take. And his lyrics are something else, even Bob Dylan has praised his songwriting. Please 🥺
I second that. Another thing would be Emmylou Harris' heart-achingly beautiful version of his song Prayer For A Cowgirl. Great interpretation of his amazing poetry.
Duet of Leonard with Lily Collins of "Suzanne" I believe, is wondrous. Of course Cohen's entire live in London concert is magnificent. Leonard himself said he preferred KD Lang's Hallelujah of the many covers. She did it at the Vancouver Olympics and it was amazing, but some think her Junos performance was better. Toss up. The staging at the Olympics was epic though.
Wow Elizabeth! Your excitement and passion for this are exhilarating to watch and experience. Thank you so much for sharing it!
I love Sara! Thank you for sharing one of your favorites by her. It was beautiful!
There is another version of this where she plays with an orchestra. I’ve watched it a million times. I still get chills and tear up every time I watch it. Possibly my favorite vocal ever.

This is my fave. But I'm an opera fan, so big vocals = yay, as they say. I guess Liz didn't pick this one because it isn't as vocally diverse?
Do you think you could do a reaction to The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd? I think you’d really love it, it’s pure emotion and just a masterpiece of vocals, thanks Elizabeth!
Is on the list and will be published for sure in the next days or weeks...

I have loved this Sara Bareilles video!!! Thank you so much for analyzing this performance and being amazing!
Dear Charismatic Voice, I urge you to check out the great Joe Cocker, one of the most powerful voices when he was in his prime, his performance at woodstock is often hailed as one of the greatest rock n roll performances ever, he's up there with Joplin IMO when it comes to passionate blues vocals. Please give it a listen I promise you won't regret, and if you decide to analyze my favorite singer of all time Joe Cocker it would be an honor!
Yes! As I was watching Sara's performance here I was thinking it's up there with my favourite covers. Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends" was the first one that sprung to mind.
Now that we've had this cover, please do an analysis of early SIR ELTON sometime - GBYBR- czcams.com/video/RZ3Bb4UsXhU/video.html and Bennie & the Jets (live 1980) czcams.com/video/Jf2Te1IfjuA/video.html Anything live from 70-80, really. 💯 WHO'S WITH ME?!
God bless you in your sensitivity! This is a wonderfully enhancing appreciation. It's impossible not to love Sara more--and to love you!
Her choices here are genius. I have to watch this every so often to have a good cry. Perfection.
I highly recommend you to react to Nothing But Thieves - Impossible (Orchestral Version - Live at Abbey Road). Conor Manson's voice is incredible in any of their songs!
Stunning arrangement, vocals and story telling. I love the tension she develops in the introduction using that repeated minor interval which she eventually releases about halfway into the performance to stunning effect. First time I ever heard her and I was blown away.
The adding of the bass notes at exactly the right time gives me chills
I am a permanent fan, Elizabeth! You've introduced me to more beautiful music in a week than I could have found in 3 years.
Oh my God, her voice is so mesmerizing and smooth. One of my favorite songs too.
This is the most amazing performance I've ever heard. Thank you for sharing this, otherwise I'd have never found it. Unbelievable.
Beautiful and inspired. Thank you for your very heartfelt reaction and analysis;). Your heart and emotion is why I keep coming back.
This deserves to have millions of views. What a great reaction video both from the technical standpoint of being able to analyze and break down what Sara is doing vocally, but also just seeing you get lost in your own emotions. I've probably seen Sara's version of GYBR at least as many times as you (maybe more!) and it *still* gets me. Thank you for this!
First time I've heard her perform...thank you. This moved me.

Thanks so much for reacting to this song. I couldn't stop thinking about this for like a week after I watched this video. This is one of my favorite Elton John songs and this version is so awesome.
This song keeps coming up on my shuffle lately and I'm SO glad it is. Love her and this performance!
She is such an amazing artist, incredible rendition.
I never get used to the perfection of this performance. Achingly beautiful.

absolutely amazing version of this classic version. excellent explanation and review, thank you so much
Also one of my all-time YT favorites. And to think this is LIVE. Amazing.
I thank you for your beautiful reaction video where you connect so completely with the emotional depth while clearly identifying the marvellous technique behind the art. It is almost a relief to find a gifted soul such as yourself who was as moved as I by even a single choice of pitch, phrasing or length of a note sustained, isolating the treasure trove of musical and vocal gems which richly colour this profoundly moving performance, most especially her penultimate delivery of the final word of the phrase 'I finally decided my future lies' which makes my eyes fill each time I hear it.
Love this version of this song! Love how haunting and melancholic she makes this song! Couldn't wait to see this video after seeing your IG post this morning. Always love the passion and emotion you display while educating on vocal techniques.. I would recommend (if you don't already have it) buying the combo CD/DVD of the show this comes from. Only Sara for the whole show doing all the singing and instrumentation. It's amazing!!
This song is one of the reasons we all love live music so much. It’s much easier to get a good result in the studio, but to be able to sing like this live??? There are only a very few that can pull it off. This has always been one of my favorite EJ songs, but Sara wins this one. It’s comforting to know EJ feels the same. This is one of those perfect moments in time. It’s magic, it’s everything. ❤
