- I swapped a MK4 Volkswagen water pump with zero experience and DIDN'T blow up my car!
DISCLAIMER! I have NO IDEA what I'm doing. Do your own waterpump and timing belt at your own risk. I will not be responsible if you blow up your engine. I might have just gotten lucky. 😂
Watch and Read to Prep for this project
(Note that the torque specs may be different for the beetle. I double checked using a Haynes Guide)

You can relieve a lot of stress by turning the engine over a couple of times by hand checking that the cam timing marks line up every time you turn the crank through two revolutions. As a seasoned mechanic, I find it difficult to believe that you're an amateur. Great job!
Thank you! I appreciate that!!!
Pretty good video and he pretty much covered what i did when i replaced my timing belt water pump kit several times already. here are a few tips he didn't cover; remove the fuel pump fuse, open gas tank cap, remove the transmission peep hole, crank the motor over a few times to release pressure off the fuel lines. Then you can turn the crank slowly manually until you see the timing marks on the transmission fly wheel through the peep hole. Marking the belt like he did was perfect and you won't blow up the engine if you put the same marks on the new belt including the arrow on top. Tip; hold the new belt to the cam sprocket at the top with a pair of vice grips using tape on the vice grips so you don't damage the belt and makes it easy to install at the bottom. IMO; you don't have to replace the motor mount bolts you can use the same ones if you know how to torque them, In other words don't stretch the same bolt again a 2nd time just torque it to specs using blue loc-tite and leave alone. In other words ( if the instructions say to torque a bolt to 30 ftbs and then an extra 90 degrees well that's when you stretch it and that's okay if it's a brand new bolt but that same bolt can be used again just don't stretch it again, just torque it to 30ftbs with blue loc-tite and leave alone.) hope this helps folks.
Thanks for the additional insight! This was my first time trying this on ANY car and I was stressed out the entire week. I took my time. Just glad I didn't blow anything up!
I have the same car with the same problem, watched many of the videos posted, yours is by far the most informative! Thanks for posting. I think now I will have enough knowledge to tackle the job. Really did enjoy your outlook on tackling the job, you really did sell yourself short, you are a great mechanic, keep up the good attitude! May God bless you and your family!
Thanks!!
Good job, you did a thorough enough video that should help anyone through the tough spots. Finding that broken pump impeller answered your overheating questions! I'm an experienced mechanic but not a VW guy and I have the same car you have in red and need to do the same chore. Glad to let you show us those swear zones without skipping through so we know what to watch out for. Thanks!
glad you found it helpful!
You sai you dont know what you are doing but this is a very well done video. Love the marker on everything. Well done
Thanks!!!
Nice work. I just had a shop do my timing belt kit a few weeks ago while getting other repairs done. It's probably the 4th time I've had it done on my 1.8t 20v Jetta that now has 211K miles. It's a fun car but it's really breaking my bank having to pay for all this labor and repairs.
that’s why i like to do my own work when i can
And thanks!!!
How much did they charge you for timing belt and pump?
They had my engine out of the car doing the head so not sure how much the timing belt kit and pump party & labor were. But a timing belt kit and water pump install on a 1.8t is probably about 1K. I would have to check some older records to see what I paid in t the past. @@mcUSA94
Did a good job glad you got accomplished 👍 great video
Thanks!!
Tip to not have fuel spray open the gas tank and take out fuel pump fuse and start the car let it idle until it dies it releases all the pressure out of the lines ONLY for gas engines
Great video! Few months ago I have decided Im going to do it by myself for the first time in my life. Your video is the best I have found. I will do it with Your video. Thank You for posting.👍
Good luck!
Omg this is so thorough! I love it! Instant sub my dude. I've got a 1.8T Beetle myself that had some tuning done by the previous owner (who is incidentally also the car-dealer), so it goes pretty good already, and is well taken care of, but still, I'd love to know all the small details about my little dub. This channel really scratches that itch.
Oh man. I sure hope not. Haha. It pretty much only goes on one way. Some pullies are flat and the flat side of the belt travels on them and other pullies have grooves and the grooved side of the belt travels on them.
@@rayregnogarage Aaah you were so fast with reacting man, nice :) Already edited my original comment.. Yeah I went back and checked what the belt looked like when you pulled it off, and it looks like it's grooved on the in- and outside.. My bad..
@@devjock haha. ya. i try!
Thanks found it helpful made it fairly easy
Glad to hear it!!
Yayyyy finally a new video lmaooo I’m gonna buy a buggie soon and I’m looking at these videos to see what I’ll need to do
Lol only took a year. Posted another one yesterday, too. More to come. Just need to edit them! Stay tuned!
Thanks for the video, I plan on doing this to our Beetle :D
Good luck! Take your time!
@@rayregnogarage greetings from Rosarito
Excellent video. Great car!
thanks!
Appreciate this video so much, my pump has started leaking and was pretty intimidated by this job considering I’ve changed a clutch on this engine before
glad you found it helpful!
Also you can’t say you don’t know what you’re doing because you done it! Props to you
Good job on the video .
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your wisdom on these cars. Luckily I bought mine after it had its timing belt change done, don't know if the water pump is plastic though so its a bit scary. Also, keep an eye out for those coolant flanges since they are plastic. I was looking if the aftermarket had some metal ones and they do exist but not for the New Beetle. Looking forward to changing them soon. If you ever find some metal ones for the Beetle please let us know, I would be running out to get them no matter the price.
Again, thank you so much for the content!
thanks for the heads up and for the kind words!
How do I stay in touch? You're the best instructor Ive ever seen.
On instagram. @rayregnogarage
15:43.... You kind of jiggled the crank gear back and forth aye?! I see... We have another name for that down here in Aus 😅
Great video We bought the same car we thought that this car is a good project We pay $2400 for the car but we knew that this guy was trying to scam us but we bought the car anyway the car look and runs great but we know what we would have to do. We found another car but older and we bought it too pade$400 for it bad transmichon Good for parts Thanks for your input.
Awesome!
that was a 19 mm 12 point socket correct ?
on what. and probably? though I'd recommend using a 6pt. I don't like 12pt. rounds things off to easily.
@@rayregnogarage for the crank gear
Yo do you still have the ranger, f150, or xterra? Its been a minute
Still have em: Xterra, Subaru, Ranger, Integra, and the Beetle. Not sure if I’ve posted on the F150 yet. I have some footage... but that’s my father in law’s truck. haha.
@@rayregnogarage oh hahaha
I may or may not have a MINOR carcaine problem. I want to buy ALL the projects.
You said you tighten to spec, could you elaborate on that pls?🥺
What r the torque specs?
I normally mention the torque specs but this project was a pain and by that point I just wanted to be done. Haha. I don’t remember them off hand. I had to look in the Haynes Manual and/or googled the spec.
@@rayregnogarage thank you sm!!
