GREAT video i has been few year's since I have worked on VWs i used to work at tbe dealership here many ages ago.pre 96 lol ya I'm older. But my son's learning so i have him watch video's beforehand so he has a better idea of what is going on. I'm not a very patient person 😂but I always watch the video's before I send them to him to make sure that he is getting good information. I will be sending yours for him to watch. I find you do a great job of explaining as well as showing how and what to do. Thank you for a great video i will have to check out any other one's you have. Keep it going passing information on to other's is a excellent thing for the future generations...
Awesome video thank you for sharing. Waiting for my timing parts to come and getting ready to do this job.
Thank you for this video I’m going to be buying a 1.8t jetta with 101k miles on it and first thing I’m gonna do is timing belt and water pump
Thanks heaps for the video mate. This will make the job sooo much easier!
I'll be doing this next in addition to everything else I've done this month...great work!
Thank you so much for the video i never worked on a v.w. before and i was very intimidated about doing the waterpump and timing belt on my mk4 jetta 1.8t i will definitely refer back to your channel in the future 🙏🏻🤘🏻
How did you get the othe half of the engine mount that goes to the block out!?
Another sign is squealing from that area! I thought for the longest time it was my tensioner.... then one day my coolant light started flashing! Popped the hood and noticed the water pump just basically exploded! Water is flowing super fast from it! I was full when I left the house and drove 10 blocks total. Got home and was empty! About to go outside now and do this job again. Did this 3-4 years ago. Fun fun! Ecs timing has great kits for cheap. Get the one with the gates blue racing belt. 325 or so delivered to my house in 2 days!
Awesome video my man!! This just saved me a bunch of time!! People like you make tasks so much simpler appreciate ya!!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it and SUBSCRIBE because we are going to reveal the corrado we been building all year soon.
Thanks Again
@@PincheALsGarage i thought I did my bad!! Subbed now for sure !!🤘🏼

Good job Al! Thanks wey
awesome video... gonna use this... but my problem is i have to replace the head. how do i line up my timing belt from say a fresh start?
Great job
This is gonna help me a lot ! Thanks
Cory Wilder your welcome
PincheALs Garage you got a link to those adjustable coil overs ?
Cory Wilder they are bilstein pss9 just google that.
Thanks homie helped out a lot
Your welcome. Glad i could help
that's some sexy adjustable coilovers :D
yup yup... bilstein pss9 coils
Had me at the first Nintendo tune
Why didn’t you use the timing marks on the crank gear? There are marks on the lower timing cover and pulley for that
Is there a way to get a hold of you
Great job! Do you think It could cause damage to not replace the stretch bolts of the bracket? Do you recomend to change all 4 of them? Thanks!
I suggest to change them all
PincheAl! Great videos man. Helped me out a lot! Do you have any video on replacing a crankshaft sensor for MK4 GTI 1.8T? I couldn't find any videos on that anywhere. The dealer said it's about a 2 hr job? Is that true?
no more like 30min
+PincheALs Garage I have a stock 1.8t cluster 2003 Gti , can I buy a Gli cluster from a 2005 Gli and make it work as in plug n play or what do I have to do to be able to have full functions
+angel flores its not plug and play. you will need someone with a fully unlocked VAG Comm and has to know how to use it as well. you will also need to change a couple wires if i am right. i highly suggest go on www.VWvortex.com and look for the full write on it.
Hi there Al, first of all just to thank you for your channel and videos, they are an inspiration for all of us, the DIYers that follow you!
In the 17:15 minute you mentioned that stretch bolts shouldn't be re-used, but if we´re in a budget we could re-use them adding some Loctite; as I´m still a rookie could you kindly tell me what kind of Loctite product you were specifically referring to?
Thanks a lot man, regards from South America.
Its not about the bolt backing out its haveing the bolt snapping on you while torquing them down. The bolt gets very weak due to the 1st time being installed and being stretched. So in my personal recommendation don't do it even if your in a jam because if the bolt snaps your in way worse condition.
@@PincheALsGarage Thanks man, appreciate it.
This might be a dumb question, but I wanted to know before I get to the timing belt. Say you lined up everything perfectly and did the markings up top and on the crank sprocket. WHAT IF during your installation of the TB itself, actually move, by accident, the crank pulley right (when it doesn't have the belt on)? Can you just rotate the crank sprocket a little bit to the left so the markings align again, and then you can try to put the belt on again? I guess that's what the markings are there for, right? Same applies to the cam sprocket. What if you, by trying to move the belt onto the lower parts, "pull" the cam clockwise? Can you just then rotate it counter-clockwise slightly so it aligns with the marking? Thank you!
Yes you can do that however if you do that make sure to rotate the engine one full cycle until the timing marks on top and bottom line up again
Great video my jetta says 105k for timing belt my car just hit 105k and belt broke bent a bunch of valves about to replace the head and everything else to get car back up and running I will be changing timing belt way early for now on
Yeah i highly suggest 60 to 75k for belt replacement
After you put the belt on the top and you said to move something back just half a tooth what did you mean by that like the whole timeing mark ? Or leave the timeing marks dead on and move something else .fixing to do this job and want to be sure. My belt has many cracks in it .216514 miles .
+Zane Massie the lower crank gear needs to be mived back about 1/2 a tooth. Once you do that i stall the belt then the lower timing cover which will show you if your timed 100% on the bottom with its mark
Do you pull the pin before or after cranking over by hand?
after you crank it over one full cycle making sure the marking line up
+PincheALs Garage what is the hardest part you think ? How long did it take you to do the job ?
+angel flores putting on the new belt and making sure the timing is correct after the new belt is on. If its your first time should take about 6 hours if you take your time.
+PincheALs Garage does it matter if I don't mark the new belt ? As long as the timing is right on the crank and can ?
+angel flores make sure you mark the crank pulley and the cam pulley
sure bro.
good sign its been blue devil ?
I'm about to do mines any heads up I should know ?
I'm super nervous what level experience would you rate this ?
from a scale of 1-10 i would say 7 in difficulty.
just make all your marking on the bely clear. use whiteout
Hey bro I got a 1.8 turbo motor and the timing belt was off the motor already how could I set the timing with out the belt being on it
You cant you need to remove the belt
There should be a mark on the flywheel as well as on the cam gear removal of a plug on top of the transmission reveals it. Hopefully this helps someone further down the road.
Why the engine bracket has to b on when ur putting the new belt on ???
Mahc 20 the one that bolts to the engine has to be in place. It can be loose too.
PincheAls Garage cool thanks for the reply
would this be the same process for a 1.9 tdi?
Jessica White very similar but the timing marks are in differnt locations
PincheAl hasn't done a TDI engine it seems. They are similar in look, but way different. You have to remove the camshaft sprocket and if the engine is 2003 or earlier, you loosen the injection pump sprocket.
how do you know how much tension to apply with the tensioner
the tensioner does that automatically. you just need to make sure its timed right and done.
I just did my timing belt/water pump following your vid and when I started up my car theres a major whirring from the TB. The tensioner is too tight I guess....How do I loosen it without redoing the whole job
Sorry I keep commenting lol 😂 what if you burp the coolant and it still over heats ?
Following 🔫
Hey can I run a no cat on a mk7 with a tune and still pass emissions ? Any tune for mk7 to pass emission without a cat or do I have to run a high flow cat ? Please answer
a high flow cat will fail Cali emissions same goes for no cat.
+PincheALs Garage even with a tune ?
+angel flores yes even with a tune. you have to have a stock exhaust to pass California STAR smog certification
+PincheALs Garage idk maybe it's diff I'm from Pennsylvania
+angel flores yeah you need to talk to local tuner shops on the laws in your state
How'd you get enough slack to put the timing belt on?
Cory Wilder that is explained in the video.
PincheALs Garage
Now I'm stuck on putting the bracket on. I put the belt on and I noticed you mentioned forgetting the bracket. I did the same thing so I gotta take off the tensioners and then put the parts together as I put the belt on?
Cory Wilder that is correct
why mark the belt tho i dont get it its a belt regardless of how its put back on its the sprockets that do the work
LetsPlayDaPc i mark the belt because its a good way to know if it moves when you put it on
But it doesn't matter if the belt moves only if the cam sprocket or flywheel pulley moves. I have seen other videos doing the same thing. It doesn't make any sense to me. It doesn't hurt but isn't necessary.
Link to the kit?

Hey bro great video! I just got a 1.8T GTI and I also got a 2000 beetle. The beetle I got w a messed up timing belt for 200 bucks. I believe some valves got bent. So if I get the head reworked will this vid help me do the timing?
no you will need a BENTLEY manual to get the pistons set and the cams set before you install the belt
Albis Varela thanks bro! The GTI I picked up has about 83k! Can you recommend me a good turbo replacement... would an Audi 2010 a4 turbo fit on her?
why did you call that turbo pipe the pancake pipe. never heard that before
doug drefus the flat pipe that sits next to the crank is called the pancake pipe. Its a common term for the 1.8t motor. Just like the crack pipe on the VR6 motors.
If you work on VW's as much; as it looks like you do, I would really recommend getting a coolant vacuum filler tool. This really speeds up the fill process and removes all the air out of the system. I use the Uview Airlift and it works excellent and also, helps you confirm there are no leaks in the system, when under vacuum.
www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=coolant%20vacuum%20filler%20tool
It is also; a good idea, to replace the torque to yield/stretch bolts for the motor mount.
yes i agree that the bolts needed to be replaced which the owner did not order and if i had the money to order tools that what make my life easier i would however that being said it also wont make this repair a true DIY since a lot of my viewers dont have these higher cost tools.
I bit the bullet and got the vacuum filler tool (as mentioned in the Bentley manual); as the overheating, could potentially damage things. They have come down in price these days; some in the $75 range. My justification for specialty tools is; it is always cheaper than having paying a pro to do the work! At the time, I was troubleshooting a overheating issue and using that tool, eliminated the air pockets in a couple of minutes, DONE! I cannot emphasize; how awesome these tools are and you can be secure, in knowing the air is out of the system and that there are no leaks in the system, at the same time. Some tools are a great investment; VCDS/VAGCOM and that vacuum filler tool, are some of them! :) Thanks for the videos; I look forward to seeing more! :)
+William Pelzel yes you are correct however i have access to these specialty tools when i need them since i know a lot of VW techs. I can say that the vacuum system is not %100 and the old school was also has issues. we had a jetta that we could not fix the overheating system until we removed every single hose and reversed flushed it. found out that the the upper radiator hose and thermostat had rust chunks. so every time we bought a new thermostat it would clog and overheat. took almost 4 flushes and a lot time.
Yes, the cooling system; on these VW's can be a challenge to diagnose! I also, had a nightmare with a 1.8T Jetta; that had g12/green coolant mixed together; it took multiple flushings and days of cleaning out all the gunk that is the result of mixing incompatible coolant types! Ugh, what a mess and allot of work. :( After awhile; I think we all end up struggling with similar issues, with VW's; they keep you busy, that is for sure!
+William Pelzel owwww man tell me about it. i get very sad when i see a vw not using g12
most recommend NOT using a metal impellor waterpump....oem is plastic for a reason
what is that reason?
the pump sits in an aluminum cavity and the metal to metal cavitation can cause excess wear on the aluminum cavity due to galvanic corrosion , ultimately causing the pump to not be able to circulate water efficiently, there is also the risk of damage if the shaft bearing fails, then the metal impellor can dig into the aluminum of the block, also causing problems with the pumps ability to circulate correctly
@@douglashunt5342 That is such BS commentary. You really have no idea what you are talking about. Cavitation is nothing like what you are describing.
@@BOHICA_ sure it does,, i stand by my comment
@@douglashunt5342 Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.
DO NOT REUSE STRETCH BOLTS WTFFFFF BRO
Which ones?
@@PincheALsGarage for the motor mounts mainly, but any. They are not designed for a re-torque so any torque measurements are incorrect. Most likely far beyond what that bolt is capable of
That is correct sir. This video was me learning all this. Once i got my bentley manual I mow religiously make sure we never reuse stretch bolts. Only time we do when we cant get them which is still bad.
All good man sorry for the reaction other then that loved the video! Keep on keeping on
