    Pressing is something the best teams in the world do these days. A way to win the ball back as quickly as possible, and launch an immediate attack.
    But how and when should a team press? Alex Stewart explains.

      I share this notion. The combination of players having very varying abilty and willingness to press, and the lack of organized pressing is dragging the overall tempo of the game down so much. I'm convinced the key reason for Bodø/Glimts success this season has been their vastly superior ability and willingness to press hard and high, exposing just how bad players in the league (especially in the back four) are at retaining posession under pressure.

    I used to coach a very quick, but also pretty lazy, 3 man front line. Once they realized that through co-ordinated pressing they could create more scoring opportunities for themselves, they immediately bought into the idea. They were triggered to press whenever an opponent played a backwards pass in their own half... I had to keep it relatively simple for them!
    The first proper game we tried this in the opponents had kicked off and, of course passed back into their midfield. The 3 lads raced after the ball and the potential passing options, the oppo. midfielder upon seeing this also passed back to the centre back. He panicked and hastily attempted to pass back to the keeper, but put too much on it and scored an own goal!!!... less than ten seconds into the game! We were 4-0 up by halftime and all down to the pressing!

    • @rizzz___
      @rizzz___ Před 3 lety +55

      Yeah, I believe it's because pressing high leave space behind which especially deadly against team like united who can utilize space behind centerback with quick foward on the break. That's why united are usually find it more difficult against lower table team that using lowblock/conservative pressing.
      Also if you watch the match again, there are quite a huge gap of space between Lepzig defenders and midfield giving Pogba a lot of space to exploit before making through pass to Rashford upfront who done well to get off the marking of Upamecano and Konate. And the other time it was like the first goal, where the CB are too pushforward that are easily exploited by opposition.
      Lepzig done quite bad off the ball positioning on that game which can't compensate the risk of high press system.

    Norwich City's third goal Manchester city in their 3-2 home win last season is a typical example of a pressing trigger. Have a look at that goal.
    Stones played the ball to Otamendi's weaker (left) foot which meant he was always going to take a torch before releasing the ball. That pass from Stones triggered Norwich's press and from it they scored their 3rd goal.

      @@nsd781 Having the defenders set up deep and the forwards press high is not a balanced approach. It's a poor approach.
      If only 3-4 people press, then the opponent will find it easy to play around them and get upfield. Then because there's a huge gap between the forwards and the defense, they can run at the backline at speed, which is the worst thing you can imagine.
      That's why every good pressing team presses with the whole team, not just a couple of players. Vertical compactness allows the team to protect each other.

      Flying Squirrel I have seen some really great performances from Chelsea using a midfield press. Organized properly, you can achieve a stronger counterattacking threat as the midfielders are in a better position to support the strikers for very rapid progression, while achieving sufficient defensive compactness. I think the problem for Chelsea is their back line is not quite solid enough for this, but Mendy between the sticks will boost their confidence. There are options other than high press or low block, after all.
