England have a wealth of talent, and even reached the European Championship final earlier this year with Gareth Southgate in charge. Southgate has played with many different formations to cater for the players at his disposal and the teams they face.
But what would England look like if they were managed by someone else?
Joe Devine and Alex Stewart take a look.

I was surprised they didnt include Guardiola. Hes actually keen to manage a national side when he leaves City after next season. Theres no way the FA would hire Mourinho or Dyche. Potter is roo young and lacks experience with big name players, he needs a move to a Spurs/Everton or even Man U before hed be ready.

Graham Potter for the 2024 Euros seems ideal. For Southgate to throw everything at his "final" tournament in Qatar next year, get the last hurrah of players like Walker, Trippier, Henderson, Kane (as guaranteed starters) while Potter's Brighton project peaks in the next 18 months, and then evolve from a position of strength rather than waiting for it all to fall apart. Could easily see Potter qualifying for the 2024 tournament with familiar players such as White and Lamptey breaking through while the likes of Rice, Foden, Phillips, Abraham, Harvey Elliott all step up.

Cm Declan Rice - solid cdm who gets the job done
Cm Hendo - another great midfield option. Captain for Liverpool and should be for his national team too.
Lm Dwight McNeil - gets to the byline and puts balls into the box. No messing around no nonsense 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💪🏻
St Harry Kane - tell him to forget being involved in build up play and dropping deep. Get him in the box and on the end of long balls and throws. If he drops too deep bring on Andy Carrol or Ashley Barnes
St Calvert Lewin - an absolute titan in the box.

I'd love to see you guys talk about the wealth of young English talent now and the investments made by the FA in the early 2000's years ago when Sven Goran Eriksson was the England manager. It seems like he and others did a lot as advocates for revamping the youth system at the time that people didn't necessarily appreciate, but now England are reaping the rewards of. Or something similar with Jurgen klinsman and the usa youth development system and the number of American players in world class academies and squads.

It really took off and started to succeed after the 2010 WC but Eriksson and others were advocates during a decade of handwringing and lack of support. everything from giving direction to the academy system, national training methodologies, coaching standards, all of it driven by Howard Wilkinson, while having Eriksson as the top manager and helping give direction within the FA system for three WC cycles.

Do you think there's any chance Guardiola might take it? It's a curveball, but thinking about how closely this crop of players - like Grealish, Foden, Saka, Mount, Smith-Rowe, Sancho, Stones, White, Ramsdale and Alexander-Arnold to name a few - fit his style I wonder if he might be tempted. Plus his ambition to coach an international team and the fact that he's already in the country.

I'm not sure Guardiola would be able to get a tune out of England the way he does for Man City. Guardiola's methods take a while to take hold, it took a full season for City to play like a title-winning team, plus a lot of money spent on players. That time to coach and option to bring better players isn't available for a national team manager.
Then there's the fact that in the CL he hasn't succeeded yet, and the CL is much more like a WC or Euros than the PL is. He's often gone out to relatively unfancied teams.

Klopp's methods take a long time to take hold, he joined Liverpool in 2015, and they were very inconsistent that season. They improved in 2016-17, but still inconsistent and not close to the top teams in the country. Then after some good buys and a lot of time and defeats to learn from, they became a top team. International management doesn't afford managers that time to coach very intensive attacking patterns, nor the ability to buy players if a position is lacking.
Which isn't to say that Klopp couldn't get England playing better, but it's not clear cut, and given that better teams than England don't always perform to their level it's a stretch to say they'd definitely win the WC. There are other good teams, and WC-winning teams often need luck or at least an absence of back luck to win.

Guardiola is due to leave City after next season. He has stated on numerous occasions that he would like to manage a national side. As a proud Catalonian, maybe Spain may not be the obvious choice, Italy dont really play "Guardiola-ball" and Germany already have a top manager. Pep has brought through or developed a significant number of Englands first XI (including Stones, Walker and most importantly Foden). Assuming France are too proud to hire a Spaniard and Belgium cant afford him surely the FA need to go all out to get him in after the World Cup?

    • @rikachu571
      @rikachu571 Před 2 lety +1

Worth adding, this isnt a dig at Southgate, who I think has transformed the England setup, but i think two world cups and a Euros is a fair cycle and hopefully he could then end on a high before handing over to Pep to take the team forward.
Potter is too young to be a national manager and doesnt have the experience managing top players.

One thing we seem to be negating here is the fact that these managers would only be getting one or two sessions in per training camp, when it comes to working on tactics. It’s why a Mourinho would work better than a Potter. You need experience, and someone who can implement a relatively simple system, fairly quickly. International football is not the place to go hipster with your choices.
Southgate works because he knows these players inside and out, from the youth system. A manager coming in would take almost a full calendar year to understand these players, and begin to implement a system that works consistently.

He has been at Burnley for 9 years and bought 152 players (including loans). That's plenty of time to buy a change of style.
