    So, I got skates about 6 weeks ago. I'm skating for the first time in, like, decades. Binging on CZcams videos and learning about edges for the first time. I stumbled upon this video entirely by accident! This is FANTASTIC! I love to drill. So, I'm going to the local park that has empty basketball courts with my condiments to practice my edges!!! Thanks! I have subscribed!

    Thank you! I thought I was totally missing some kind of skill to be able to make turns in the other direction! Turns out I have very strong inside edges and struggle with outside edges. Thank you for the thorough explanation and the ideas on drills to try!

    Inside edges are for sure a big challenge especially around the corners

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  Před 3 lety +1

      I can understand that. They are tough. It when the body leans that direction, it is hard to hold. Make sure your trucks are loose enough, and lean your hips and shoulders the opposite way. Just press inside with your foot.

    I've been trying to learn how to turn tight with the one foot in front of the other for some time. I am a newer skater, 56. I finally got it! With the leaning and info about where to put weight on my feet, and the hip/arms, I got that feeling like I'm steering a surfboard (which I have also never done). I am so happy! I was starting to think something was wrong with me. I find I have to understand and then feel the physics in order to get my body to do it. I've been afraid of leaning, but it all in how you center your weight!

      @@appelusa The word slalom originates from Morgedal in Telemark, Norway - a valley also known as "the craddle of skiing". "Sla" means slanted hill, "lom" or "låm" in Norwegian means track.
      Thank you for all your great roller skating tutorials 😍

    Is there an exercise to get more comfortable in doing the figure 8 with one foot further in front? My feet don’t seem to want to do what my brain tells. I think my head gets confused with which foot to put forward and my trailing foot gets confused on how to follow. If starting off to turn right/rotate right, my right foot should lead? If I want to turn/rotate hips left, my left foot should lead? Maybe my trucks are too tight? I can rotate and turn just fine if I don’t have the one foot further ahead.. Love your videos! Your instructions are clear and you give further insight than what I’ve learned in roller class!

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  Před 3 lety

      Hey Joanna! I always put the foot that’s closest to the “cone” forward but I’ve seen people do it opposite. You can also do this with your feet side by side. I personally find it easier to edge around with feet either side by side or closest foot to obstacle in front.
      Your trucks may definitely be too tight! You really have to isometrically press and pull your feet around where you want them to go. I hope this helps! I have live zoom classes and zoom private lessons if you want to sign up, checkout linkt.ree/appelusa 😊🙏🏻 or appelusa@gmail.com 🙌🏻 Happy skating!

    Hello there, I know this seems a little off-topic, but I don't really know where to ask my question: I am writing a novel where one of the characters is an artistic Roller Skater. Can you tell me how many pairs of skates a professional skater owns throughout his career? The Character in my book is 25 years old and started skating at around the age of 7. I have no idea which number would be realistic, considering feet growth and replacement of worn-out skates. If someone could help me out, I would be really grateful. Thanks and greetings, Debby :)
