  • This is an ADVANCED Level instruction on Transitions, formally or otherwise known as Mohawk Turns. We start off standing still and then move into rolling transitions from backward to forward and forward to backward. Then we challenge up by performing inside edge transition to inside edge, and outside edge transition to outside edge. And wrap up with transition hops.

    You are a great teacher and thanks for breaking these things down. I am 54 years old and have got back into skating. I practically lived on skates through my childhood, teenage years and well into adulthood. Then life got in the way and I have not skated on quads or blades (both) for over 20 years. Now its like my survival instinct has taken over and I cannot believe I used to go down long steep hills both forward and backward and do all the various slides, stops and weave through traffic on my rollerblades. Skate parks and rinks are very rare, nothing like the 70's and 80's used to be.
    On a side note....
    In this day in age... I guess it's better that you make the change in "syntax" for the names of these skate moves otherwise you will have a loud, small group of people canceling you or calling you racist or homophobe or whatever else because people are so easily offended.
    Strangely enough, I am native and those terms are not offensive to me. I am not Mohawk or Choctaw those are the names of tribes/nations, not dance moves as you may have been told on Instagram or wherever. I am not a mouthpiece of natives in particular but things have gotten a little carried away by a few overly sensitive types. There is a difference between being called a slur and a name of a skate maneuver which should present no offense.
    Keep up the great work. I wish you continued success.

      Thanks so much Jay for the feedback and connect! There’s a point I stopped throwing myself into the air and rotating 2-3 turns and landing on one foot 😆 spins have always been my strong point.
      There was an article or book that came out which gave the history of the names of ice skating maneuvers. It had to do with native people being brought to the UK to perform for the royals. The ice skaters began using the names for the dances (so the reference said) for their ice skating moves since they looked similar. You could say that is cultural appropriation. As long, perhaps, as the credit goes to where the names are taken from and with respect it could be ok. You could say we live in a hyper sensitive society, but out of respect for the Native American tribes probably best to change the names. The ice organizations already had. I did get backlash a few times trying to post videos on this topic so trying to be respectful and neutral 🙏🏼

    OMG you are the first person who has mentioned that it is difficult to stay or even get to a position in which your feet are in a straight line when you’re heel to heel. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get past that because my hips are apparently VERY tight. I’ve started stretching but this gives me hope. Thank you!

    I have been searching for videos that are straight to the point without any extra, extra commentary, as it is very frustrating to have to watch 30min long videos for tutorials and most of it is extra and irrelevant. I love your videos they're perfect for tutorials and are straight to the point and super informative, also very well spoken and understandable. So thank you so much, I love this style of coaching!

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  Před 3 lety

      Hi ! Hard to say without seeing your alignment, (I do offer zoom lessons let me know for hats something you’d be interested in appelusa@gmail) but make sure you keep your heels close together, and commit! Hesitancy could be a factor. The weight transfer should happen as soon as you step down on your new foot. And if you are over your new foot with your chest, hips, and a bent knee, with the weight in the center of the new foot, you should be able to get the old foot off the ground.

  • @DrMuhaha
    @DrMuhaha Před 3 lety

    Thank you for the helpful and informative video! My issue is after I turn (open book position), I am too scared to commit to turning the standing/rolling foot. I will end up sliding or dragging it (into a C - shape) and incomplete the transition turn. Any advice?

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  Před 3 lety +1

      Which direction is hardest for you? Front to back or back to front? Most people lean towards the foot they are turning with, thus stepping down too early and creating that "C" shape. Imagine a center line or pole running down the enter of your body from the top of your head to the foot you are standing on. Rotate open book position keeping that pole straight (and pressing outer edge of standing foot slightly to maintain balance) and keep rotating as far as you can head shoulder hips and toe. Then force your body the rest of the way with an oomph. Sat on standing foot, balanced, as long as possible. hope that helps!

    Hi Appselusa, I am so embarrassed. I have been struggling with trying to do a three turn and its not that I cannot completely do them but I surely am not confident nor are they smooth. I kept thinking I am missing something and sure enough I realized I am missing a building block. How did I skip over this with the transitions and the two foot turn.?GAH !!!!! Its really important to learn these skating skills in order in my opinion because one builds on the other for not only confidence but leg strength, coordination, your brain understanding all the moves etc. I feel like I could have saved myself much frustration if I had done things in order. Maybe you could do a video that explains the proper ORDER of skating from the edges, transitions, turns and jumps. Or maybe you have and I missed that one too.. Thank you for the videos

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  Před 3 lety +2

      Tracy I was reading this thinking, man I gotta ask her to hoot me a testimonial 🤩 🤣 You are right, I did shoot them in order because that’s how I teach privates and group classes, one skill building upon the next. I will definitely take your suggestion and record an explanation of how to watch the series as a suggestion. Thank you for suggesting a be for sharing your experience 🙏🏻😊

    Do you have any advice for that noise that my wheels make whenever I transition? I can’t describe it other than a loud scrape?

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  Před 3 lety

      If you have outdoor wheels they may make noise because of their softer material than indoor wheels. If they are made of a plasticky material then they will because of the friction they are making with the ground. If you are picking up your feet and wheels off the ground at the same time there should not be a sound. Only if you are dragging wheels across the surface would there be a sound. Hope that helps!

      I hear your struggle! Trust me- I have worked with people who cannot even stand on skates and with persistence and patience , and some once to twice weekly dedication, you can and will get the skills down you desire. It's best to have a coach working with you in a class setting or one on one. Is there a skating facility near you or any coaches teaching outdoors you know of? Maybe I can help find someone in your area for you. Aside, I do teach on zoom and if I can see you I can correct body position and make suggestions. Please don't get discouraged even though I know that's easier said than done. I know I make it look easy but I was born on skates.... I can't walk to save my life :) haha.
