      Your up/down, up/down and down with the butt, up with the gut was the PERFECT way for me to learn. I started with bubbles then added the up/down, up/down and hand placements(KEY). I'm finally comfortable going backwards (slow).

      @@mintberry3164 I'm sad to admit that I noticed some level of snobbery in figure skating communities (on Reddit, or FB, or just in comments on CZcams). Same thing with Ballet communities 🤷‍♀️ like it happens when a person from a small village moved to a huge city and started to look down their nose at their former peers...
      To me, skating on four wheels was a bit scary because it felt different (even though the main technique is the same, still you can't apply your ice skills on roller skates directly. I still have no idea how to spin on roller skates! 😁)
      Plus falling onto the asphalt to me still seems less attractive than falling onto the ice 😆

    • @jlitt2917
      @jlitt2917 Před 3 lety +2

      it IS so much scarier on quad skates! i've been doing backwards crossovers forever on ice skates but it took me 10+ attempts to just TRY these on rollerskates, because every time i was about to lift the front skate, i thought i was going to die. i've noticed that rollerskaters are more fun and ice skaters (not even just the really good, almost professional ones) take themselves SO SERIOUSLY. it's like they all think they're going to be in the olympics or disney on ice or something. 🤣

    • @e_lena9656
      @e_lena9656 Před 3 lety +1

      @@jlitt2917 yassss! 😆 like 'how did you dare to call twizzles just 'turns'?? Did you know that there's a whole bunch of different twizzle types??" etc 🤦‍♀️😅
      And they don't think that non-professional skaters don't even have to know those names! Can do it? Great, enjoy yourself :)
      And I in roller skating it's really more about having fun and enjoying your rides :) no matter whether you're doing bubbles or scissors or lemons 😆

    Yet another fantastic tutorial, Dirty Deb! Thank you for mentioning the edges and demonstrating the inside and outside edges. One of the stranger sensations when starting to take wider inside steps before the cross-over/cross pull to get more speed and power, is the feeling of stepping inside the circle onto the inside two wheels first, then feeling all 4 wheels on the floor as the pull gets closer, and then the final push at the end of the cross pull from the outside two wheels. That "rocking" sensation from inside to flat to outside edges can feel scary -- like whether the ankle is strong enough to do that entire pull without flexing and twisting (my big fear!).

    Kia Ora from NZ Dirty Deb :) can you please do a vid on the difference between Derby skates and heeled skates? I used to skate in heeled boots as a teen and could do all these cool tricks. Now, 30 years later, I've decided to get back in the boots and try Derby, but man, those skates are different! Balance is a lot more precarious for a start! Can you explain why that is? And perhaps give some tips? I used to use toe stops all the time too and now I need to use t- stops and plow stops and I'm finding it hard and wondering if it's the style of boot? Maybe I just need heaps more practice or maybe I need two pairs? Thanks in advance! Nga mihi :)

      I explain the difference a bit in my "Buying Roller Skates" video but I know what you are talking about specifically. I wear both styles and can totally feel the difference.

    What is the name of the skate move at 0:28 seconds? It was done so gracefully!

    How do you slow down without using the toe stops?

      Hey! Watch my "Stopping on Roller Skates" playlist. There are all sorts of videos there that show you the proper ways to stop. Good luck!

    Thank you Dirty! Did them for the first time today! I studied your vids on backwards using heels and your other bakwards crosspull vid, then this one totally made it click in my brain. One question: are you also doing crosspulls backwards in a straight line or are they just for corners?

      I bet it could be done in a more-or-less straight line if you include a transition in order to alternate between left and right "pulls." You'd have to be careful to look, though.

    I am pretty good at skating backward, as long as I'm not looking back. (make sense of that). How do I avoid losing balance when I look backward? I've tried what you said in a previous video and keep my booty low, knees bent, hips dropped, back straight, but I still lose balance and tend to fall forward. Help Mama Deb!

    @dirtyschoolofskate at 13: 30, you said to pull with inside edge. Which foot are you referencing at that time stamp in the video? Thank you 😊 🛼

    Is this the backwards version of a cross over turn? Can you do this with your outside foot coming over the other and pushing out?

    Do most of these techniques work for rollerblading as well?

    Can Crosspulls be done going forward? If so, where is your tutorial for that one Dirty Deb?

    • @daveybaker5583
      @daveybaker5583 Před 2 lety

      Actually, when learning backwards I figured out how to do them forwards. Nothing special, it's just the reverse of backwards, but it's much easier and gave me confidence to do them backwards.

    Are you skating with your weight on your outside leg to do these?
    I've seen figure skaters use this sort of move a lot. Now I understand why.

      Ah, ok, I asked too early in the video. Excellent explanations as always!
