Your explanation on the mechanics is THE BOMB! People always say 'practice' but you can't practice what you don't know how to do. Thanks for your channel!
I’ve set 2 goals for the next couple months: 1. Smoother Mohawk turns and 2. Being more comfortable skating backwards. Great video as always!
Those sound like great goals!
Dirty School of Skate I do that to and I find that I end mastering them or almost mastering then way faster then I thought
I finally put my skates back on and I didn't fall! I'm super proud of myself but I need to re strengthen my legs and ankles again. Whew!
I am proud of you!
Jessica Reynolds Go girl!!! I going back to the rink myself. It’s been years but I’m sticking to it this time. We got this!
I get roller-girl realness from your energy and tutorials ☺️ absolutely love your channel 💜 I definitely will be hitting the roller skating rinks more than often now
Thank you so much :)
I just learned how to dip from the Dirty School of Skate 😁 I'm just watching in a restaurant though. I get my first skates tomorrow!
Don't forget to read - and do - the checklist! They come with every pair of skate, no matter the brand. If you don't have a skate tool (or two) already, get one ASAP....this is especially important if you don't have a rink nearby or plan on skating mainly (or only) outdoors. You want...NEED...things that are supposed to be tight to actually BE tight (your toe stops and all nuts on the mounting bolts)...and vice versa (wheels, of course, shouldn't be so tight that the wheels barely move). Have fun and congrats on the new skates!! :)
@@MystiqueRisingSun thank you for the tips! I do have a skate tool! I just bought one for my little sister's skates. And now we can practice home together once mine come in since she can lose her motor skill very quickly being a complete beginner. I will definitely look for the checklist and follow through for my skates!
What is that checklist?
An ikea guide for skates or what?
In Germany you just get skates and learn everything yourself.
I really want to open a sk ate rink here :3
@@peterlustig8021 Basically just what I commented. Making sure the toe stop is tight. Making sure the mounting bolts are tight. Making sure the wheels actually roll - machines are often used to screw on the axle nuts, so they often get over-tightened, but I've seen a couple skater over the year lose an axle nut because they weren't on tight *enough* straight out of the box. As for me, I give it 15 seconds. That is, spin the wheels and time them. If they spin freely for 15 seconds (or more), you're good. If they stop immediately - or slow down after only 4 or 5 seconds, the axle nuts are too tight. As for the trucks...it usually says to check them to make sure they're not "too loose" - but that's really skater preference. You DON'T want them so loose that they "rattle" if you pick your foot up off the ground, but other than that, it's up to the individual skater to adjust them until they feel comfortable.
Personally, I like my back trucks cranked down almost as tight as they'll go, but I prefer the fronts a bit more loose (makes for easier turning at the rinks). My husband, however, prefers his just a notch tighter than that "rattle stage". All 5 of our kids prefer theirs somewhere in between the "super tight" and "way too loose" setting.
For me, I suggest tightening them as much as possible, then skating a "lap" - it can be a lap at an actual rink or just from "Point A to Point B and back" if you skate outdoors (like, if you skate on a basketball court, skate from post to post of the hoops or from the net to the fence and back on a tennis court)...loosen them up 1/4 to 1/2 a turn...do another lap...repeat until they're where YOU like how they feel. You can do this individually - back trucks only, then work on the front trucks - or loosen the fronts and backs at the same time.
Oddly enough, I have plans for my own rink...but getting a loan to start such a "risky" business (rinks are making a comeback, but it's a slow process here in the U.S.), well, it isn't easy so I'd have to win the lotto in order to build it. :(
I'm 31 and have just recently started skating! It's been a life long dream for me. Since I've started I've been binge-watching your videos.
I cannot tell you how badly I wanna move to Long Beach so that I can meet you in person and get lessons! Your videos are amazing and I've learned so much already.
Awwww thank you. If you get down this way, let's skate!
I started at 31 too!!! 😀🖐
What I like most about your teachings, is that younger so encouraging. Thank you.
....you are encouraging
I skated backwards for the first time tonight since breaking my ankle (while skating backwards) 15 months ago! Super rusty. But this is a new skate goal!
Dirty you are the best man!!! I really appreciate how you teach the mechanics of things and from there we build off those things. Love ya Dirty.
When you get this down, you can throw in a bunch of different steps that look really cool too. Like Deb says, everyone has their own style. I like to transition from one step to another while skating backwards. There are like six different steps I go into while doing that back step. When you learn to go backwards it opens up a lot of really cool steps and moves.
YES!!!!
I can’t wait to practice this backwards upgrade tomorrow. You did more than a decent job DD, you’re the Don Dada of breaking it down and you never forget to mention those all important little details as well. Thank you. 💛🇬🇧
Your tutorials are the best! The way you break down and explain the techniques makes it easy to internalize. Thank you! I cant wait to practice this! 😃
I swear Every video gets better,
Just wanted to say I got my first pair of skates recently and started skating everyday like you said, and I literally improve everyday. Everyday it gets easier.
LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! Also that intro 🤩 I’ve been working on my edges the past few weeks and this helps me ever more!!! Thank you again!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Edges are everything in skating :)
You make me smile & i just love your energy. I'm going to practice all your tips, maybe next time I go down to California, I'll be able to stop by. Much love from Alaska💖👍
I have skated in Alaska3 times! Love it. Thank you for your kind words.
Wish you were on the Central Coast of California. I was an amateur ice skater years ago and miss it but can see how I could really get into roller skating. You’re wonderful! Thank You!!!
Huge fan. Your videos have such a great breakdown of HOW the mechanics work, it has helped me immensely! Thank you!
I love this Woman! She's amazing!!!!Thanks Deb! I'm getting it done🤗❤💯
Omg!!!! This is awesome... I'll be dipping before I know it. You are an awesome teacher. Keep the vids coming!
Kanika Scott I know right. She’s awesome and I’ve been struggling to learn how to dip
Finally!!! A dip video!! I’ve been wanting to learn to dip for the longest now!!
I haven't skated in 20+ years. I used to be able to skate forwards pretty well and I could do crossovers. Now at 38 years old I've finally ordered my very first pair of skates and I'm hoping I can at least remember what I used to know. Eventually I'd like to be able to backwards skate though. I've been binge watching every skating video I can even if i'm not at that level yet. It's so cool to see the potential of what CAN be done. I'm so excited to get my skates and start practicing!
Omg that intro was life!!!🤩🤩
Thank you! I had to go back and see what the fuss was about :)
Yesss more edge work. This is basically dipping though, which I love the reinforcement because I've been doing this for a few weeks now.
You’re the queen 👸. I did cross overs today after watching that video. I’m trying this tomorrow!
Deb! Your production quality got an upgrade and it's awesome! I've been skating as much as I can (which is to say - not as much as I want because our rinks are only open on weekends, what I wouldn't give to live near FVSC!) for about six months now and I have found these tutorials so helpful. When my boyfriend went skating with me and had some Bambi-on-the-ice tendencies I used your tips to help him be more confident and start shifting his weight rather than trying to walk around on skates. Thank you so much for all of your help ❤
Love it when you, say what edges to use. 😘🌈👍
You look gorgeous.
Thank you thank you for your videos. I show your videos to everyone at the rink. 🌈
I really appreciate this :)
I like this, its like doing a dip backwards, which i see people do. This is why I love ur teaching. 😀
Thank you very much :) I am happy you like it.
I just came in last night after not skating for about five years. I absolutely LOVE the fun atmosphere your space provided. Didn't even feel bad when I ate sh*t lol thanks for a fun night
I am so happy you like it!
@@Dirtydeborahharry I'll stop by next Monday for some more🥰
I’m 61 and enjoy watching your videos. I’m hoping to be doing backward crossovers soon, just need to keep practicing!
Keep it up!!!
This lookslike one has to have some grace to do this. I have a whole lot to work on before I get to regular old backwards skating.
Dear Dirty Debra,
You are so appreciated and are an amazing and natural teacher. I am so grateful!
Your videos are so helpful. I started outdoor staking for fitness. I was so terrified. I would have given up if I hadn’t found your videos. Your techniques have given me confidence that I won’t kill myself. Probably
Excellent! I am so happy to read this!
Awesome, I've been working on backward skating for a while, now I actually have a mechanism.
omg I was literally just thinking about wanting to improve my backwards skating on my way home hahah, thanks!!!
Great minds think alike!
Queen! Love the intro! 👏🙏
I think I love you. You are an amazing teacher and coach!
Thanks Dirty Deb, I'll be out there working on it this soon!
Thank you so much for this video.
I'm in Colombia ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ your videos. I'm learning a lot
Great video, thanks!
Cant wait to try that..thx
Great vid as always.
I really love your videos
Thank you! This is just what i needed. I may have this unlocked now because of you.
I love your videos and I am constantly trying what you teach. Thank you!
You ALWAYS help me be a better teacher!! Thank you!
Diiirrrrttyyy!!! Watched you on another channel about lookin "beginner". Helped me So Much! I skated back in the day, I'll b 51 this year, and haven't skated in a long while and when I tried about 6 years ago fell a lot and not safely. Dirty I'm So thankful for your vids! Thank you so much!! I hope to visit your rink one day!! God Bless.
This is such a perfect explanation!!! Thank you!!
I started figure skating when I turned fifty and now I'm 56 and learning this skill on the ice. The push off is slightly different but the swing behind is the same. Toepicks do make it interesting as I like to sit forward and then they scratch. Great video!
I love your videos. Always inspirational and the techniques are tangible-easy to understand. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!! This break down is amazing. You're the best💖💖💖💖
This is a great tutorial. I will give this a try.
I love ur vids because you break everything down and make it so much easier. Keep up the good work
I found the reminder to open up my body on backwards outside edges very useful, it’s easy to forget!
These videos are perfect!! I can neaten my skating so hopefully I’m going an artistic skate team
What a beautiful video! Great intro (so fun!), followed by the usual precise instruction. Thanks you yet again.❤️🙏
I love your skating videos!! Thank you for creating them! They are fantastically helpful! THank you thank you thank you!
Sooooo helpful! Transition to my other side was my issue with the move. Thank you, thank you, thank you for pointing out the details 🧚🏼
TE AMOOO when i do it the way you say, IT ALWAYS WORKS
Fabulous! You make everything difficult suddenly look fun and doable! 😊😊😊
This has been one of the best explanations and so much easier to remember when I'm out and about practising. Thank you!
Detail is super helpful!! I needed to be able to figure out the shift of body weight and stuff and that was really helpful!
Your videos are AWESOME!!! I'm an old school skater as well and even I've learned a lot! I need to come back to skate there again!
Yassss! Thank you Dirty!
you always look soo elegant when skating. Been able to skate backwards for a while but didn't know how to elaborate on the skating and style. can't wait to try this. thank you for a great video
This is the video I’ve been waiting for from you 🙌🏼. I’ve been working on this move for months but I keep giving up. Thank you for teaching the mechanics of it, next rink session practice ☝🏼💕💕💕
Ergh I love your videos! I've just broken through a tiny wall with backwards skating, but I definitely need to go back and watch all your other backwards videos, this one is cool, we'll get there eventually! Thank you :):)
Your cool. I love skating. I’m going to practice what you teach.
You’ve done a decent job, Deb! Thank you. :-D
I’m going to practice this tonight! Hopefully master it! Wish me luck ☺️
I found u tonight, and im so happy about it, like ur style, like how clear you explain the stuff, and im glad to learn from you up right now :)
I am glad too :) Welcome :)
Hey Dirty! Love the video as always. This is actually my main style of backwards skating when I'm on a flat surface, so it was funny to see a video and be like wait, that's part of my natural 'style'! I thought I might share my own experience because I can skate very comfortably backwards now, but less than two years ago I had never skated in my life. I would say from my own experience that I suppose I learned to skate forwards a little bit first but really as a beginner I started practicing them both at around the same time and skill level. For me this was really helpful because I learned to be comfortable doing both so skating backwards never felt too weird. I notice you said people should also be able to transition, which is totally true for a rink skate obviously that makes sense! As a beginner tho, for me personally as I was teaching myself to skate (using many of your videos :)) it was easier for me to learn backwards skating than it was for me to figure out transitions at allll. This could just be how my brain works but I taught myself backwards skating first so that when I figured out transitions I would be able to keep moving after I transitioned. So I could do some backwards braiding/ a similar style to this before I could ever actually transition. Just a long way of saying that I taught it to myself slightly differently and maybe that info could be useful to someone if they can/will read my very long comment haha!
I do this move! Didnt know it was an 'upgrade'. I dont do it exactly like this but i make a circle with one leg and stop and then the other leg. Ill try this too!!
i feel motivated 💪🏻
I love it! Thank you
Thank you :)
As an inline skater I still really enjoy the tutorials. My backwards skate is now better than my forward skate. It's strange. It's true though, I have far more style and gracefully balance when skating backwards.. I'm working on looking over both shoulders as to not rely on looking over my left all the time. I had a rollover accident about 6 years ago that broke my neck in 3 places, one in the C6 and 2 in the C7.. Sometimes my neck gets sore from looking over the left all the time so I'm working on keeping it mixed up a bit.
Backwards crossover has improved tremendously, it's helped my style and made things much more enjoyable.
As for what I mentioned earlier... When I first returned to skating about a year ago,,, it was all forwards, high speed, sharp turns, like, I skate like a hockey skater... My forward skate progressed to slalom skating with cones, balance and style progressed, everything was great right? Speed skating? Don't even get me started, I'll smoke anyone just about.. When I finally grasped the backwards skate, got crossover down, developed a style, it's like I'm on ice, my wheels hardly leave the floor, iv got Swiss ceramic bearings in my wheels and they allow me to work far less to gain speed with less strides. It's crazy cuz I hardly ever wanna even go forward anymore. I look completely clumsy out there going forward unless I'm in speed mode, if I'm in speed mode I'm all like straight line, hard at it, still got the slalom thing down. But going backwards I'm more graceful, have more style in it, more fluidity, I enjoy it so much that I'll skate a 2 - 4 hour session backwards almost the entire time.
Im not saying this is a problem but it's like iv lost my touch with the forward skate. In a huge crowd of skaters I actually feel better at menuevering through going backwards by far then going forward. It's strange.
When you wrote "rollover accident" I thought you meant on skates! Ok … so glad you are ok and skating. Many people feel more secure actually going backward. I am not sure why but it is also my preferred method to go downhill because I think it is safer. You are right to mix it up a bit. Learn both sides :)
Dang Deb! I’ve been watching your videos for a bit and I just looked at your subscriber count for the first time in a couple of weeks. Wow you’re growing fast!!
Thanks to people like you :)
You make that looks so good and I know your only teaching us and not styling yet! 😳👏🏼😍
You are correct Sir. I keep it all straight forward and simple here :)
Thank you for all your videos I'm 37 6'5 380lbs and just started back skating after almost 20 years. Your videos have been so helpful. I'm actually skating backwards now because of your videos. 🙌🏾💚💛❤🙌🏾.
Get it! Welcome back!!!!
you have done a decent job❤️ ,thanks,i like inline skates,
I love the music... cool affects.. and I really liked the video to learn more at going backwards. Keep 'em coming please !!!! And thank you so much to you and your camera man !!
Thank you! In the video description boxes, I credit the people who help me create this … the music is all by an incredible musician who I believe is only 16! His mom is the one handling filming and editing.
can you please make a video about your favorite skate set ups? favorite wheels, trucks, bearings, everything!
Hi Dirty! Your videos have helped me a lot. I use them to try to figure out how to explain skate basics to shiny new roller derby skaters and to be clear on the movements myself. I also share them, and sometimes our newer skaters share your videos with me. I love them and I appreciate you putting the time and effort in. I was going to ask about your wheels, but it looks like you include your skate setup in the video description - thank you for that as well.
Excellent. Thank you for sharing and teaching!!!
You're my favorite roller skater!
My daughter's and I love the videos
Hey Deborah!
I just moved to a new city and was invited to the local roller rink. I hadn't gone skating in ages, but the basics I learned how to do growing up all came back to me in an instant and I had such a blast. I decided to buy my first pair of skates from the planet roller skate shop thanks to your videos and the moxi girls so I can practice doing cool stuff at home!
You have no idea how happy I am to read this comment! Go roll!!!
going to try skating for the first time tomorrow! wish me luck :)
Good luck to you! Have fun.
Im so glad you said this was difficult because Im struggling with it majorly.
Is there a tutorial for skating on one foot?
Just what I wanted to learn next. You're a mindreader.
Planting seeds is the key❤
I wish you were located in Toronto, Canada. However, now I have a reason to visit California. 🙂
There are literally only two roller skating rinks and they’re unfortunately quite far from where I live, but I’ll make an effort to still skate/practice even if it’s in my apartment. Just hoping the tenants below me don’t mind. Lol! By the way, thank you sooo much for these videos. They’ve been extremely helpful.
Awwww Canada is the best. Keep skating. See you when you visit.
thank you débo for the lessons i will try!!! easy to said but hard to do!!!! remember praaaaaactise!!!!!!!!! lol..............MERCI déborah.
I just bought some sure grips! I switched from roller blades!
Welcome to the quad side!
Can you pleas do more videos about out door skating? (sorry for bad english, i'm from sweden) 😊
Check out Indy Jamma Jones. She has a LOT of outdoor videos...including how to avoid or safely cross common outdoor obstacles. I love watching both of these women and really wouldn't be able to pick a favorite if I were forced to! LOL
@@MystiqueRisingSun thank you for your anser. I have try to watch her but i find it hard to do it. I dont know why but, it is somthing i dont connect to. Hope you understa d my english. Have a Nice Day 😊
@@friixxy They definitely have their own styles of teaching. I know one of my friends prefers this channel because - as a dancer - she's used to the more technical way Dirty Deb teaches, with posture, the way she talks about edges and which edges to use when, etc. Other than the VERY basics, I think Indy sometimes teaches more to those who already know how to skate and are just looking for different tricks to try. Also, don't know where you're from, but your English is pretty good. :)
U have taught me to skate soo yea ur kinda cool
Well thank you :)
OMG!!!....I miss skating SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!
I love you❤️
L O V E your videos 😍
❤️
