The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), also known as jack tree, is a species of tree in the fig, mulberry, and breadfruit family (Moraceae).[8] Its origin is in the region between the Western Ghats of southern India and the rainforests of Malaysia. Jackfruit is commonly used in South and Southeast Asian cuisines. Both ripe and unripe fruits are consumed. The jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and the state fruit of the Indian states of Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. It is available internationally canned or frozen and in chilled meals as are various products derived from the fruit such as noodles and chips.
Ripe jackfruit is naturally sweet, with subtle pineapple- or banana-like flavor. It can be used to make a variety of dishes, including custards, cakes, or mixed with shaved ice as es teler in Indonesia or halo-halo in the Philippines. For the traditional breakfast dish in southern India, idlis, the fruit is used with rice as an ingredient and jackfruit leaves are used as a wrapping for steaming. Jackfruit dosas can be prepared by grinding jackfruit flesh along with the batter. Ripe jackfruit arils are sometimes seeded, fried, or freeze-dried and sold as jackfruit chips. |

The correct way to cut and open a Jack fruit is lengthwise thats how we do it in the state of Goa, the fruit pieces remain intact and not in small pieces.

Jackfruit is one of the tastiest fruits, next only to mangoes. But it is as tough to get at the fruit, as it is easy with mango. But the effort of extracting the fruit is rewarding. Excellent instructions. The video could have been shortened a little.

I was short on time watching this, but I just increased the playback speed in the settings for this video to 1.25x and I got all of the information in a shorter amount of time. I have never dealt with a whole jackfruit, and knew very little about them, so I really appreciate all of the information that he presented here. I’ll be watching it in its 1x playback speed when I have more time, and likely when I’m ready to prepare my jackfruit later this week.

Avoid following the "urban" of cutting a jackfruit; stick to the traditional / "rural" method. For a change, i had followed the "urban" method this morning. What seemed to be very satisfying in the beginning, soon turned out to be a huge headache. The cleaning part of the small individual pieces of the fruit is super time consuming in this method.

Do you have to get different kinds of jackfruit to eat both the fruit and flesh? I know when it's raw is typically when you eat the flesh... but is there ANY way to eat both the fruit and the flesh in a ripe fruit? I look forward to trying the seeds so I'm using more of the fruit.
