  • Watch Jimmy DiResta build a Sam Maloof inspired rocking chair. Jimmy used walnut to make this chair. There are some great woodworking techniques demonstrated in this project, including how to sculpt chair parts on a band saw and by hand, how to fill cracks with epoxy and sawdust, and how to assemble a chair.

Ive studied Maloof and watched several videos and I must say I think your process is closer to his than those who meticulously follow the forms and patterns and templates. Maloof had a wonderful eye but free process resulting in genuine comfort were as important as anything. Great job thanks for sharing.

I was fortunate enough to live close to Mr Maloof at his residence in SoCal, i have toured his shop and watched as he built his famous rocking chairs.
Jimmy... you did his honor well .!!

A crying shame this isn't getting more views...
This, in my insignificant opinion, is Jimmy at his best!
Thanks, maun. A pleasure to watch and learn. I may even take the courage now, to build a chair myself, BUT...
First I need a shop tall enough and big enough, then I need one of those honking big band saws! Oh, and a disk sander that's as big as I am! Lol!

Love the mentality of jump in and just do it. I've never been great at getting things from my mind onto paper so I often just have to show people what I'm seeing in my mind, by just doing it. Great video and amazing chair.

Instagram follower of the Godfadda. He said go check this and here I am. Having fun with a build and "Going to school on the first one!" is something I practice. JD also said he was anxious about this but once he committed it was a flow. A maker has gotta make! Always like the backstory on creation.

1/31/22; ...Jimmy, just watched you make that Maloof Rocking chair...! Just great! Excellent narration, fantastic equipment..'big mamma' band saw, 3-different spoke shaves, multiple rasps, files, orbital sanders, 60/80/120 grit sanding papers, then mix of Walnut saw dust & West Epoxy. Finally Maloof oil stain & finish. Wonderful project between you & Rockler! Hope to see more videos like this in the future.👍👍👍🧑‍🔧😊🍷

Wow. I must admit I had never heard of you before and I had never seen any of your videos. I watched this video three times. I just love your attitude. Stuff like just drill the holes and don't worry that much about the angle because their going to get filled in anyway and then taking advantage of the curve that came from the assembly. I will now watch all of your videos and I will steal everything I can from them (I get the feeling that's the point). Such a peaceful, comfortable, profound way of constructing a beautiful piece of furniture. I really am so happy that I found your video. It will change the way I do things and take away so much stress - Thank You.
