In the Hobbit: doesn’t it say that Gandalf had taken Bilbo’s mother away for an adventure? She was a Took…. And Bilbo knew Gandalf because in his childhood he did firework displays?
His mother was quite adventurous, his father was very level headed. You couldn't ask for a better combo for the quest!
Yes you're correct. It's mentioned in the opening when Gandalf's first arriving and the narration is establishing Baggins' lineage. Unfinished tales elaborates on it a little further.

If you are trying to sneak up on a dragon wouldn't you instead try to smell like where it is hiding? If I was the dragon and smelled something completely new after sitting in that cave all those years I would definitely be on high alert. Doesn't matter if he could recognize the scent or not. If it a new and foriegn scent that would let you know something is wrong.
Bilbo smelled like pipeweed
Having just finished the book (again lol), all those things are pointed out. So the Unfinished Tales isn't really needed, it just works as extra confirmations.

I've always wondered why a new scent would be a good idea. I mean if he's accustomed to the smell of dwarf, has surrounded himself with the dwarves things, would he notice another dwarf? I mean I guess he did say he could hear Bilbo too, but now I'm splitting heirs
when you are familiar with something, you are more likely to pick it out, even at a distance. when something is new to you, you often need to get to know the new thing, right? i think, the goal, is to introduce something new, so that he would have a hard time picking it out. he would have to seek it to understand it.

Worst case scenario even if he did smell Bilbo, he likely would want to see what the new smell was before doing anything. Dragons are naturally curious creatures, though unfortunately their curiosity is more akin to a particularly bad tempered cat that enjoys playing with their food.
