One thing it proves: The Balrog knew the Common Tongue

It would be cool if Gothmog was another Nazgul, but I do not believe that he was. My guess would be the witch king was a Black Numenorean and likely born into or joined at an early age a cult of morgoth/sauron worship. He was noted for his ability, ambition, and lust for power and awarded with a ring of power. I wonder if there was some sort of selection process to be granted a ring. IE Sauron would play two rivals off each other, and they would each go to greater and greater lengths to prove themselves worthy of such a gift from Sauron.

I put forth that Manwe knew there was a Balrog unaccounted for in Middle Earth and percieved that Gandalf would clash with it. And so Gandalf was sent in his "grey" form with just enough power to take the Balrog off the board. If he had been sent as SS Gandalf "White" from the start, he would have won easily but would have been diminished him so he could not have faced Sauron. As it was, when he was reincarnated as "White"he had lost all that was "Grey" but was easily able to get it back just by meeting his old friends.

I still reckon it's one of the greatest tactical pieces of writing when you consider how Gandalf organised the heist against Smaug to eventually have him taken out and then the Balrog. It's as if Sauron ended up losing his two star players. It's another testimony to how all things somehow work together. Also made me wonder about Pippin's foolery and how that stirred up the Balrog. That encounter with the Balrog was essential to draw out Gandalf 2.0 and allow him to become 'the White'...

There weren’t a huge number of Maiar during the creation of Arda, so it’s reasonable that they all knew each other to at least some capacity. Like a grade in high school, certainly they all had their cliques, where some hung out more closely, but everyone knew each other in some capacity. The question would be more aptly posed as: Did they recognize each other during their encounter on the bridge? To that the answer is most likely not, at least not at first. Gandalf was effectively disguised in his role/capacity as an Istari, since that had been the purpose of them having their power level drastically reduced, and their memories wiped of their existence in Valinor. Likely, once Gandalf shouted out he was a servant of Eru, the Balrog at least figured out he was another Maiar, even if it couldn’t recognize specifically which Maiar.

I’m so confused. The elvin rings were made last, but we see them being made at the end of season one. Perhaps because Sauron gave them a couple of suggestions and buggered off, he wasn’t actually present during their making so then when he returns and makes all the other ones obviously they’re more tainted and then he can make the one and the three are still uncorrupted. That might be how they going to do it now that I actually think about it. Would’ve been better if they were made in the right order but anyway. We had to see some rings being made at the end of the first season for it not to be a complete master I guess. Oh wait, I just had a thought, Sauron probably now know about the elvin rings because they were made first so when he comes back that’s gonna cause issues and really doesn’t make sense how are the rings state and corrupted. I hope they bloody know what they’re doing.

also all the art depicted wings on balrogs is so terrible... they don't have wings. they don't fly. they have a fear aura, darkness aura, etc. extremely strong and durable but people mistake the fire/shadow of light and darkness in the film for wings and literally RAN with it in fan art.

as for "personal" interactions, its impossible to know since when they're sent to middle earth, they are wiped of certain memories and previous lives. only recounting a few memories. like when gandalf the white came back and said "yes i was once known as that name" at any rate, i'm sure everyone knew everyone, and then the division happened. balrogs seem to not even be able to speak anymore... and that's a horrible thing to do a sentient creature. making them rage more into the darkness/shadow.

i would contest they most definitely knew each other as gandalf said some words to the balrog that only he and the balrog would know. such as the flame of udun and how gandalf is using the fire of the good guy's source of fire magic, forgot his name

It's also possible they knew each other in Valinor before Melkor / Morgoth fell to evil and corrupted the Maiar who would become Balrogs.

What’s the meaning behind what Gandalf says to the Balrog?

It’s as bad as I expected, I did not have any hope for it and from what I can see the only way to save the show would have been to to publicly apologise, sack the hole writing staff and costume design team and completely redo seasons one the show was dreadful even if u take away that it was pretending to be a middle earth story the writing and story etc was just dreadful even for modern low standards

Gandalf said Sauron would win. We all just have to sit down at this point. Gandalf would know. Sorry Old Tom, we love you but you ALONE against the might of Sauron and his minions? I'm a little shocked that so many commenters appear to have no idea that the Tolkien Society hated The Lord of the Rings trilogy and would rather have their eyezes put out than give away the rights to the Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales, or any of the books containing the Lore of Middle Earth. So, they can't make the movies we all want to see. I am however encouraged that the right people are making the movie. Peter, Fran and Philippa alongside Andy will do a great job, it will be better than any film made in the last 10 years. I am sad that it has taken them so long to try as I really can't imagine anyone other than Viggo as Aragorn and Ian as Gandalf. And of all those worried, no this will not be a movie where we watch Aragorn wandering around with Gollum. There are a lot of concurrent events that can be bought in from the appendices of the LOTRs! Namarie to the all!

We are all being decieved. The showrunners dislike Tolkien, as they are trying to ruin it for the next generation of potential fans. Maybe they wasn't allowed to join the college Tolkien society back in the day and still hold a grudge. How could they be so off the mark with it all, its all so frustrating. This show could have been amazing.

I think they were both Maiar, therefore they would have known each other, at least to some extent, from the time before Melkor's betrayal and theft of the Silmarils.

Considering Maiar existed before the creation of the phisical world, they most certainly knew each other in some form or another. As far as I understand it, Gandalf only had a vague/abstract memory of himself before his Istarification. There may very well have been encounters between the 2 during the fall of Beleriand, but that would have been as Olorin, not Gandalf. Seems more likely that the recognition on gandalfs part was more a mix of wizard peception and knowledge of old lore..... Legolas also identifies the balrog on sight, after all. As to the Balrog, there is no indication he recognizes gandalf as a maiar, at least until the wizards speach of defiance. Even then, its not clear he truly understands exactly what he is facing. Though, presumably, he must figure it out at some point during their subsequent epic chase and battle😂
