incredible acting by Jennifer. The transition from the shock of watching Cinna being beaten up to concern for Peeta and her own safety as the games starts is effortless.

The book was intense. Because you're reading the book in the mindset of Kantiss, this whole event was not predictable. When she came up the tube, after what happened with Cinna and she can only see nothing but water. Her first thought was "this is no place for a girl on fire" and then the chapter ends. I was like WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!

That's not really character development, it's more of a "I know what I can do now so I'm going to do it." Character development (which rarely ever happens in YA and this is no exception. Katniss starts off as a determined fighter against the capitol and ends that was as well) is when a character changes who they are as a person, not just a choice they make changing the second time around. It would have been a character moment if other factors weren't the things that lead to Katniss' decision changing, but since the fact she now had allies and Haymitch was more confident in her abilities (note, her abilities never changed and neither did her own confidence in them, it was a character change by Haymitch) caused her change, it wasn't a character moment.
Haymitch said "forget everything I taught you in the last hunger games. That was child's play."

@@04082001ify they filmed the entire cornucopia scene at an unused water park in atlanta where they built the entire set over an actual man made pond (but without the jungle background) then after atlanta shooting was complete they shot all the jungle and beach scenes in hawaii with imax cameras. i highly recommend watching the behind the scenes documentaries for all the movies - each one is over two hours long!
i know the rest was done on location but the scene of her rising up on the pedestal was actually all green screen which is insane. i saw the clip, she rose up on a soundstage surrounded by a green screen and delivered that performance. pure talent!

Well, the only district that would have done well without any practice would have been district 4. District 4 is the water district, so they swim a lot. None of the other districts have water near them I think. In the book Katniss swam in a pond, so maybe that too.

@@alaaye5237 Also in the book its based on that since most people are locked inside their district the vast majority of tributes will be worse swimmers then she is, the only people who regularly do stuff in the water are her, and those form district 4, one of whom is an old lady. That means she is probably the second best swimmer in the entire arena, so chances are she can get to a bow before anyone can kill her.
She had to get a weapon this time because it was a full victors games. And it kinda suited her because most of the other victors couldn’t even swim

Well in the 1st book, Katniss notices that Peeta "excels in hand to hand combat"
So yeah, Peeta could kill someone, but he most certainly doesn't unless it's a last resort. In the 2nd book though, I don't think he killed that guy. Peeta was still standing on his podium from either not knowing if something was in the water, or if he couldn't swim.

Cinematography wise, this scene is such a HUGE glow up from the previous game.
I love the continouos shot of her rising up the tube, and the swooping 360 view of the Arena before she Jumps into Action.
My only problem is how underwhelming the rest of the scene played out. We barely got to see the other tribute fight and die. Which wouldve been really nice to see considering these are all veterans .
Ive heard interviews from the actors that were more scenes that got cut out in the final version which i wish we got see in a extended cut soon

It was a glow up in effects, but i still like the start at the cornucopia in the first movie. The lack of sound, the shock in everyone faces, the sound at the start when the timer reaches 0 being the only thing that you can hear while everyone is running, it's amazing.
It visually looks much more polished, but this bloodbath felt unusually empty. You hardly get a glance at anyone at all other than the main characters, even in the background. You don't really see anybody at the cornucopia even after the careers take over at the end, who killed a few people to do so but there's no real indicator of that

The whole point of the arena was the symbol it represented. The symbol of the revolution is a mockingjay. Katniss is the one who carries that symbol, she is the "girl on fire". The design of the arena was snows way of saying "I am going to put your flame out"

@@UncoveredChronicles ummm, no. It actually WAS made for it to be Finnick's fortee. Plutarch was behind this arena and he planned it to suite the strongest link of the alliance, which was Finnick. He clued Katniss on that clock thingy. It's pretty much designed for the rebels, to light up the flame, rather than put it out.

***** True, one of my favorite scores has to be the one used in X-Men 2. The movie in itself is amazing with an action-packed plot and amazing acting, but part of what makes it great is it's beautiful score by John Ottman. I love it so much that I felt nostalgic and almost teary-eyed when I realized they re-used it for X-Men: Days of Future Past.
***** My favorite music from X2's score is obviously from the beginning intro & credits, but also from Mystique's scenes, especially when she taps into Stryker's computer & when she kisses Wolverine while disguised as Jean. I love how the music starts off as passionate as they kiss, but then changes to sneaky & mysterious once she reveals her true self. And thanks for recommending those other scores, I'll check them out

I love the difference between the beginning of the two games. In the first one, there was no epic music… just a single note, an ear budding sound, as if she couldn’t process what was happening, not believing the situation she was in… and in this one you can really see her determination to survive more than ever, accepting that she’s going through it all over again

The fact that Finnick goes "I'll find Peeta" as soon as he talks with Katniss speaks volumes :') he knows that right know she's freaking out and that the only person who could calm her down would be Peeta
I think it was also done to gain her trust. He knew that Katniss would not go anywhere without Peeta.
Such a brilliantly written and shot scene. They perfectly portrayed the confusion, anger, lack of power in Katnis, and then suddenly having to transition immediately into survival mode.

Yes I agree! I was thinking about that when I watched katnisses reaction to Peeta’s heart stopping and him coming back to life.
The acting is insane. From the hysterical, sobbing/breathing like what you see at the beginning of the film, showing how she’s unraveled since the first games, to moments later, panicking about Peeta, then 6 breaths, which go from panicked to composed, and her face morphs to stone cold killer, eyes locked on the bow, completely savage and calculated. She outdid herself. The best acting of the movie I think.

Snow really did everything to offput her right at the beginning. Attacked Cinna and put her in a water arena, because according to his information she shouldn’t be able to swim
Cinna was definitely to break her down. But the arena are built years prior their use, which is before Katniss made herself Snows enemy, so I dont think the water center is an indicator for that. But another hint (in the movie) for him handicapping her is that she was placed between Cashmere and Brutus, which would've ended Katniss had they been faster than her. Also right behind Cashmere there was Gloss. So they wouldn't even have to fight each other since they shared a land strip. Also who would attack one of them knowing that their sibling is nearby? On the contrary you have Peeta who was on the complete opposite of the pool, so much, that the cornucopia even blocked him from Katniss view. Snow played his favourites really obvious

fun fact: this scene of her being elevated up to the arena is one of the most seamless transitions from the normal aspect ratio to IMAX in cinema history. Not a lot of people noticed it in the theater but it was insane eye candy at the time.

Correct me if I'm wrong - it's been a while since I've read the books, but I think Cinna was the first person who truly died FOR her when they didn't have to, someone who wasn't a tribute. Someone who gave their life simply because of their pure belief in her, right in front of her eyes. That's a really heavy thing to feel honestly. Knowing that someone gave their life simply because they believed in you so much.
From 1:09 on is so intense. This is where they switched from regular format to IMAX and in theaters you could see the screen slowly get larger and larger as she went up. The score, cinematography, and acting were great. The 360 shot was also a great touch.
I remember watching this in the theatre. This was the coolest scene to me because right after Cinna's death as she's being taken up to the field, I remember the screen subtly changing from wide screen to full screen and combined with the clock-like dinging in the background gave me chills as it was about to get intense.

1:00-1:25 This scene is a cinematic masterpiece, right along with the tribute interviews. The camera and score work so well together and Jennifer’s intense acting rounds everything off. I remember getting goosebumps at the first watch!

You know what I find amazing about the cinematography when they get into the arena, is you share the same feeling of confusion, anticipation and fear that the tributes probably feel. They only show you cropped scenes, like when she goes up you first see the dark tunnel running up ahead, the blinding sunlight, and a huge body of water. The way they segment the information of the place the tributes will be fighting in, so that you also can feel overwhelmed by everything that’s laying out in front of you, is really well done. But just like the tribute, you only have ten seconds to understand your situation because afterwards it’s you fighting to the death.
This is probably the best film out of the trilogy. A cool arena, lots of characters to root for.👍👍
I love the way how the scene changes really fast. Very dynamic, especially when the peacekeepers hit Cinna, and Katniss rises from the dark cell to the sunny arena (cool changes in the lightning) and pulls herself together very fast. Love it.
Best movie of the franchise.

saw a theory somewhere that the reason cinna pinned the mockingjay pin in the sleeves was to mark a spot where johanna will take the tracker out later... till his last breath, cinna is still helping them defeat the capitol :(

i find it interesting the way that brutus looked at katniss in the beginning when they both got on that rock path. it was almost as if he was letting her go. as violent as he was towards their group throughout the movie, i wonder if he was just putting on an act and was part of the revolution as well.
in my opinion i think he stopped because he wanted katniss to get killed in the bloodbath. he knows katniss will surely grab that bow and arrow

That is pretty badass that Katniss and Finnick not only took control of the cornucopia but Katniss had to make the hard choice to run or risk the bloodbath year after year not expecting to have Finnick on her side. She barely survived the first time without a bow and this time she was dominating.
This scene it’s incredible! The transition to the arena and the camera around Katniss and the tension music it’s amazing!!

Well, pretty much nobody in district 12 knew how to swim. Only Katniss did because her father taught her going illegally into the woods. In fact, in the books, a lot of the tribute are stuck because they don't know how to swim, not just Peeta.
Notice how Katniss was placed among Careers. It's like Snow soo wanted her to die.
He did want to get her killed, but it's pretty clear that she had the skills to justify her score of 12/12.

I love how the strategy in the first games, because of how open it was, it was too risky to go for the Cornucopia. But in this one, thanks to the layout, it was actually advantageous to go for the Cornucopia, and Katniss figured that out in the small time she had immediately after watching Cinna get beaten, possibly to death. Very quick thinking!
Not really. In her first games she lost concentration because of Peeta. She was ready to go there actually but lost time and ran away instead.
@@div92 I thought everyone was telling her not to go for it in the first one, because it's a death trap, what with all the tributes that are actually trained.
@@4137Swords that's what Haymitch said but she thought that because she was a fast runner she would make it. She gave up cause she took the decision to start running late.
This actually played more to her advantage in the book too, because over half the tributes couldn't swim so they hesitated to dive off the pedestals straight away. And Snow/Gamemakers assumed incorrectly that, coming from District 12, Katniss couldn't swim either. But her father had thought her in secret as a child
