- Moving my car camper is much easier and way faster than moving house!! In this video I introduce my new car camper, a 2013 Toyota Rav4! It's still a small camper, but it's bigger than the Matrix. I'm excited to get camping and try it out!

LITTLE CABIN IN THE YUKON
When I'm not traveling in an RV or at home working on an RV, I'm usually at our remote, off grid log cabin in the Yukon. My husband and I have had this cabin for over 20 years and love it. If you'd like a look into that part of my life, I have a channel showing how we live there, lots of beautiful scenery and wildlife. So much of what I learned living off grid at the cabin has come in handy living in an off grid RV! The link is here-

I'm so excited to have a new car camper to travel in! The extra space is going to be nice. More elbow room for me, Freddie and Gracie! It also has a roof rack, which I can use for a cartop carrier if I ever feel the need for even more storage space! To see how I setup my Matrix for car camping, check out this video👉czcams.com/video/rRALxZ-NFw0/video.html
I've only just discovered your CZcams channel, and while my loyalties will always be for the Matrix, I understand your need to upgrade... hopefully your RAViolis tank stays full!
Be well neighbor to the North! 🖐️
Hi!! I’m glad you found us! I haven’t completely abandoned the Matrix! It’s a super car and we have no plans to sell it. It’s just gone into ‘hibernation’ for now😁Because I live and travel in the north, from my home in southern, but snowy BC, to our cabin in the Yukon, I do spend long hours driving on icy roads. After avoiding a moose on the Alaska Highway last December, and ending up in a snowbank we decided something more suited to winter roads was in order. We hadn’t realized the Matrix doesn’t have ABS, which could have kept me out of that snowbank and costing me a $2000 tow bill! The Matrix is so good on gas and runs so well, we’re thinking we will use it for long trips in the non-snowy seasons. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment! Happy travels in your Matrix!
@@HoneyandMe I had a 2005 Toyota Matrix Xr with All Wheel Drive, and I still managed to high center it, living in Salem Oregon, it was great for the snow and ice but driving it to Bellingham Washington, it didn't make on one tank of gas, so I traded it in for a 2014 Toyota Prius C, and could make it on one tank... I then moved here (Bellingham) to help with my father (Alzheimer's and Dementia), and help my mother maintain their house and two acres... I found a used 2006 Matrix, but it is in rough shape, and am going to sell the Prius C, and restore the Matrix, since I don't need to drive that far anymore...
I do understand all your reasons for the switch, but I still think as a Canadian, you're making the right choice to keep your Matrix, afterall, they were manufactured in Canada! 🤠
@@ImDBatty1 Wow! An AWD Matrix would be wonderful! The Prius is another car I’ve thought about. The guy who owned the RAV4 before us (only other owner) traded it in for a brand new Prius!.
I’m sorry to hear about your Dad. My own dad passed away 6 years ago from Alzheimer’s, so I understand what you are dealing with. I went and stayed with my mom for 3 years during the school year, which allowed me to be there to help out as well as my youngest kiddo was able to attend public school for his final 3 years of school. We live remotely and have always homeschooled our 5 kids. It was nice to be able to be there for Mom as well as see my Dad more often. It was rough though. So hard to lose a parent that way.
Yes, I think we are being smart keeping the Matrix too. The Rav was also made in Canada! Take care!-Sue
@@HoneyandMe Sue, my father in his prime was a tunneling engineer, as such he moved us around often... my mother wasn't interested in homeschooling, as much as it would have made sense, but I didn't complain! When I was old enough to join the military, I signed up for the Army, and missed my own graduation to attend Basic Training...
I see a lot of my story in your story, and I think it's only something other people who have been through it, can understand it...
After my father was forced to retire (his boss hired his nephew right out of university) he and my mother decided the Pacific Northwest was the place to be, about 8 miles as the crow flys from the Canadian border... I had my own adventures, falling in and out of love, nearly moving to Scotland, but I stayed in America knowing that someday I would get the call to come help take care of my father...
I attribute my still being among the living, due to the crumple zone technology that Toyota had implemented back in the 80's after surviving a horrible car accident... as such Toyota has been my automotive manufacturer of choice...
If you ever find yourself stateside in America, Washington state, Bellingham area, let me know, it would be great to swap stories over a cuppa tea and biscuits! My two days off are Sundays and Tuesdays, both are often full days of caregiving, but I'm certain I could slip away! I'm trying to talk my fiance into crossing the border into Canada for a day hike, but we haven't yet... if they don't lock down the border again, I've nearly got her convinced!
Be well Sue! Back to binge watching more of your adventures! 🤠
Cool. Now you just need a small compressor cooler that is super efficient and cycles rather than just stays on while plugged in like the Koolatron. The RAV4 will be good for the cabin.
Yes, I think it’s going to be much safer to drive up north. The Matrix doesn’t have abs which would have saved me ending up in a snowbank last year on the Alaska Highway. I’m looking into a larger cooler too. Any recommendations?
Much more room, Sue. Chest is roomy. Stickers making it home
It feels way roomier! Time will tell! Finally getting to stick my stickers, lol!
The extra storage under hump is handy but the hump to sleep is uncomfortable. Looks like other than the hump you have more space overall in the Rav. That truck is awesome. I would probably cover it up with stickers. Oh you already started 😂 I love it!! I love VW BUS. Im gonna have to send you a sticker
Yes, that hump is a pain… literally! Lol! I don’t feel it at all with the sofa cushion bed I started using last summer. So it’s not an issue, but I thought I’d try one of my thick self inflating mattresses and there’s no way I would be comfortable using it. I could really feel the hump. Glad I have the sofa cushions!
That’s the plan! Cover the trunk with stickers! I’d love one from you for it!
Oh wow!!!❤
Yup!!
Hey there, maximizing space is everything. So that was an amazing job. Have an awesome time camping. Bringing good vibes and support to the channel.
Hey!😁Yes, space is pretty limited in car campers, no matter the make and model.
I used to have a RAV4 and loved it! You've got a little more room in the RAV which will be nice. Where will your first trip take you, I wonder?
Hi Deb! I'm loving the Rav4! We're the 4th in our family (so far!) to own one, so they were highly recommended to us. This one has had only 1 other owner and he was an older man who, our dealer friend didn't think, had ever even taken it on gravel. It's in beautiful condition. I'm on my way to visit as a couple of my kids and my mom on Vancouver Island and will be trying it out there. Then, I do have a big trip planned! Thanks for watching! Take care!-Sue
I think you will be very happy with the Rav 4! 👍
I think so too, Greg. I'm feeling rather spoiled with the sunroof (never had one before) the backup camera (1st too). Not to mention the screen on the dash! A few new things to learn and get used to, but it feels great to drive and with AWD, we're hoping I won't slide off the road next time a moose walks out in front of me on the Alaska Highway! The Matrix does not have ABS and when we were heading home from the cabin for Christmas, it was either plow into Mr. Moose or !!! The car decided for me and we just slid on into the snowbank on the side of the highway. No damage done, except for needing to be towed out. Thankfully, Trev, my husband was ahead of me and realized I'd exited the road. Hence the Rav4! Thanks for watching!
Gracias ❤❤
De nada!
thank you for sharing, I've watched your video and I like it.. always success.. greetings one hobby
Thank you!!
Oh, I think that is great that you have that extra space and I love the box that you found at value Village, love the pronunciation ha ha! Isn’t it fun when you find just the right thing!! I didn’t see an address to send you a sticker!

@@HoneyandMe awesome! I definitely have stickers and they aren’t all vinyl stickers but I do have a nice selection of vinyl
@@JeanneBaney Wonderful!!
looks like you a decent amount of room
Yes! It’s funny how much roomier it feels too! I was actually quite surprised😁The Matrix is a great car and we are keeping it in ‘standby’ in case we need a 2nd car or one of our kids ends up wanting it. It’s just too nice to sell for what we’d get for it being a 2004.❤️Thanks so much for popping by!❤️
Wow! There is a lot of extra space. I’m sure Freddy and Gracie will find ways to fill them. 💜
Yes, you know how they pack. There's always another bag of treats, a toy, a special blankie. Not to mention a harness and leash for every possible occasion! I try to keep it to a minimum, but they are kind of spoiled. 😊 Thanks for watching, Lil Sis! I really appreciate your support💙
I love it! So much more room, being able to sit up in bed makes such a big difference! The storage chest is perfect! Happy car camping! 🙌
Thanks so much! 😊 Yes, my old back is going to be much happier with the higher ceiling in the Rav4. The Matrix was wonderful and took me on many lovely overnight trips and weekends, but it was the ceiling height more than anything that made things feel a bit crowded. I think the Rav4 will feel like a palace! lol! Thanks for watching!
Looks nice and roomy. Our hummer has a decent amount of space, but I can't really sit up in the bed which is kind of annoying. But I make it work anyway.
I've never been in a Hummer, but they look big! I'm actually surprised you can't sit up. The Matrix worked well, but the extra headroom is going to be so nice! Thanks for watching, Felicity!
@@HoneyandMe well we built a platform which takes some of the space. You can see in our build vids and tour after the build that there really isn't as much room in it as one might think. Plus we have the baby hummer h3, not the big daddy hummer (as we call it lol).
@@HappyPlaceCamping Oh that’s right! I remember Jesse building the platform. Does he still sleep in the front seat?
@@HoneyandMe Yes. Since we have that smaller portable potty, he’s able to put the seat back farther and it works better for him.
@@HappyPlaceCamping Perfect! You’re making it work!👍
That really does look more comfy.
Hi Linda! I really think it's going to be less crowded, especially once Freddie and Gracie jump in too. I'm looking forward to giving it a test run on my trip to visit my family. Thanks for watching!
Isn’t it amazing how one extra inch makes a difference in a small space? Have fun with the family!
It really is, Winter! I was amazed at the extra space in it. I just packed the Rav4 with all the stuff I need to take to my son, daughter and grandkids and am blown away that it all fit and I didn't even need to put anything on my bed! Looking forward to seeing them all! Take care and hope all goes well with the van repairs.
@@HoneyandMe Drive safely my friend! 🙏💕💕
Looks great, you will love the extra room. Hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead.
Hi Stacie! Yes, I think it will be great too! Have a great weekend also!🤨
Hi. Great setup! Question: I will be doing some stealth and wondering if you have figured out best way to go from front seat to back of suv without getting out of car. Thanks!
Hi Teri!! Great question! I basically just wiggle between the seats onto the bed. It can be easier to do this if you place your bed in the passenger side of the car. Be careful with the console between the front seats as kneeling on it with your full weight can crack the top. You can also move the passenger seat all the way forward and the driver seat all the way back to increase the space between the seats. Or, try filing the passenger seat back to climb over. In the Matrix, the passenger seat folds all the way forward so it’s flat on to the seat, but the Rav4 doesn’t do that. It only goes straight up. It is easier for me to crawl into the back in the Matrix because of this difference.
The more you do it, the easier it gets as you figure out your positioning and movements. Try different combinations of seat positions and see what works best for you in your vehicle. Practise makes perfect as the old saying goes!😁
Thanks for watching and for your question! Happy new year❤️
Thanks! This helps a lot. Happy New Year!!!@@HoneyandMe
Curious as to why you moved bed to drivers side. Setting up my Rav 4 so wondering about that. Thanks!
Thanks for your question, Teri! The main reason is because the spilt back seat in the Rav4 is on the opposite side than the Matrix. I figured if I decided I wanted to put the single seat up into a seat, I would still be able to do that with the bed on the double seat side. No idea why Toyota has it that way in the Rav and not the Matrix though. I’ve found that having the bed behind the driver’s seat though worked pretty good. I can still get to it from the front seat, and it allows me access to the boxes of stuff I have in the back on the passenger side. It was difficult to reach them from the front seat in the Matrix being right behind the driver’s seat. I’d have to fully turn around in the seat to access anything. Whereas in the Rav it’s just twisting around to grab things. Also, when I get out of the car to get into the back, it’s not as obvious as walking all the way around to the passenger side. Having tried both sides, I definitely prefer it on the driver’s side. Hope that helps you😁Thanks for asking again!❤️
Good morning! watching your switcheroo and would like to know about the mattress you are using. do you have a video on it? or is it the same mattress from your rv camper with a different cover? Thank you for sharing. 🙋♀🙂
Goodmorning. Cindy! The mattress I've been using is not a mattress at all, but sofa cushions form a sofa we got rid of a few years back. There are 3 of them and they make an amazingly comfortable and easily moveable bed. Here's the video and thanks for watching and your question! -czcams.com/video/BHos-Pf-CA4/video.html
Thank you! @@HoneyandMe
@@CindyCaVANas You're very welcome!
DID YOU END UP FEELING THE BUMP YOU TALKED ABOUT?
Heading out tomorrow, so will let you know then! I think my cushions are thick enough that I won’t notice it though.
is that a regular Rav4 or sport Rav4?
It’s a 2013 RAV4 XLT. We’d love to get a Sport, or Trail, as they are called here in Canada. But they are like hen’s teeth. Hard to find.
