  • Revisiting the Cold Steel Italian Longsword and comparing it with their Hand and a Half sword. Both are affordable awesome cutters. The Italian is prettier, while the Hand and a Half is shorter yet beefier. Really like 'em both.

Rumor has it that windlass at least at one point made a lot of the cold steel swords. Ive found that my katana skills transfer nicely to most 2 handed euro swords. Definitely some cut marks jn the ceiling from my longsword.

Which would you choose for a Cold Steel Longsword.

I have the MAA version of the hand-and-a-half. It is a great sword.

the MAA line is from India AFAIK they come slathered in grease.. The Italian Long Sword MAA is narrower throughout , blade , grip and guard and pommel all narrower and 1090 steel not 1060. the edge is ok for a sword but nothing like the non MAA version. MAA is a functional beater and is black with a narrower grip if these are pros and not cons go for it. For me the upgrade for about $50 more is worth it for the non MAA versions. Fiore de Battaglia manual is available in hardcopy on Amazon and I got one. Traditional Italian Martial Arts from a Master back in the day...really is a gem. Its also got pole arms , daggers , unarmed and even mounted techniques on a horse.

I have one of their maa Italian longswords and the pommel comes off no problem but the grip or whatever it's called and the guard will not. Anyone else have this issue?

Have you looked at grosse messers? They seem to share some characteristics with certain Chinese heavy blades like the Dadao.

I found one used in good shape for 100 bucks, but the edge seemed abit rough and I was trying to use a ceramic on the edge and it bit me twice just like a knife!!! Didn't feel super sharp, but was deceptive

Hey Mr. Rizzo, I love your weapon reviews! Many people from HEMA say that the Cold Steel swords are highly historically inaccurate but very robust (I can’t talk about this since I mostly own old swords and my experience with modern replicas is basically non-existent). I’m curious what your opinion on the lack of historical accuracy is.

If you're not doing test cutting or half-swording this indoor trainer from Purpleheart armory might work for your limited space

The old hand and a half sword actually had a hand and a half length grip.
