- Gerry Michaud Jr. is the man behind Big G’s Deli, a low-key sandwich spot in Winslow, Maine, not far from Colby College. Gerry has been feeding locals since 1986 when he opened his deli and serves up some of the largest sandwiches you’ve ever seen, thanks in part to his own ingenious quest for the perfect sandwich bread, which he makes at the deli.

you can just tell from his demeanor that this is the spot to go. his voice puts me at ease. genuine guy.
these are the best kind of places.
Well said.
Not to discredit him, but in ME, this is how it is ❤️ every mom and pop restaurant is like this. Maine is the state of family. Every place treats you, and makes you feel like you’re part of the family.
Lies again? Executive Chef Institute College
Yeah not for the food but for the emotional support
@@pinkchaos.Clown and a nobody discrediting b g deli!
This was actually pretty wholesome, I wasn't expecting it. Props to Munchies for bringing us this.
I hope Big G's keeps existing forever
Been eating here since I was a kid. Amazing food, worth the hour drive from where I live now.
They won't using that bread
Cringe. It's a story about a small town diner. What else did you expect?
He has these wise, kind, and hard working eyes. Much much respect.
I was going to say...super likeable guy. Great
you mean blue
working eyes is the worst compliment i ever heard
@@raymondbabich6408 right like what you saying I look tired af 🤣
Bro he gets to work at 1 am.
As someone who lives in Maine and goes here, don’t miss your chance to check this place out if given the opportunity!
on the bucket list in the USA trip
As someone who lives in Maine you shouldn’t be so open and welcome to out-of-state hours they’re the ones that bring increased inflation to our home prices destroy our forests for new neighborhoods and shopping centers and they’re the reason why our state is becoming more accessible to home-based workers which completely destroys the choir in quaintness of our state
Wish I could! Looks delicious! As a new beach club owner, it brought tears to my eyes on this man's commitment & discipline. Certainly gave me a motivational boost for today!
What sandwich is the best here?
I will
Amazing. People like Gerry don't start businesses, they start traditions. I love to see these family run restaurants that continue into the next generation.
Rodney you clown the dude is microwaving onions and cheese and slaps it on a piece of bread and calls it a sandwich how could you ever be happy to pay for that what a disaster after 30 years in the business you'd think he would find a way to serve hot food without it being nuked in the microwave YUUUK
VERY early on, it was Colby College students who sat down on the floor of his "strictly take-out" sandwich shop to eat, who inspired him to expand and make in-house seating an option, at a previous location in Winslow. He subsequently moved to this location and, as he said, has expanded multiple times. I've been enjoying his incredible sandwiches almost since he first opened.
I've never wanted a deli sandwich as much as I do right now
Yeah why watch this now I just stopped eating pigs as well
@@MrSuperG try i friend oyster mushrooms sandwich some of the best ive ever had
Holy shit… I went here when I was a kid, must have been 2002 or 2003, and I brought a menu home because the sandwiches were so good/ thought the names were funny. Obviously that got misplaced over the years and I’ve never been able to find which sandwich shop it was even though I distinctly remembered ordering the Lucretia Borgia. What a trip stumbling open this video 20 years later, will definitely be going back the next time I’m up that way.
No you didn’t. Quit lying
@@TheUcboi surely he'd lie about a sandwich
@@MatTancock lmao
Why did I cream my shorts to this
People don't get any better than this. The end was great. This is actually pretty moving. Who knew sandwiches could be so heavy? Life is remarkable.
Lol
Born and raised in central Maine and Big G’s has been a go-to since my childhood. Do not sleep on this legendary spot!
I lived in New Vineyard for 4 years when I was a teen back in the 1980’s. Went to Farmington High school. I can’t remember eating at one.
I'm over by belfast now a days but I remember going there as a kid like 15 years ago I think about those sandwiches often so cool coming across this video I have to go back sometime
Awe man. As someone with no family this shit always brings jealous tears to my eyes. So uplifting and wholesome
I understand you completely
I feel you bud
Don't be jealous, start your own family and make some new memories my friend
@@lawrenceragnarok1186 that’s the plan. Hard to find good girls my age these days that also want kids and also match my way of life haha. Single and 29 is hard.
@@EvanHT I'm single and 34, my last girlfriend was last year and she was only 21, didn't work out so great but was fun for a while lol
I'm a regular here. If you're ever in the Waterville area in Maine, stop in. These sandwiches are amazing.
As one of those Colby grads he mentioned, this place is heaven! Always look forward to grabbing a sandwich when I go up to Winslow!
His determination and dedication at 70 years old is amazing. Eating a sandwich from this place is definitely going in my bucket list.
This man would make the trip worth it. He is so genuine and loves what he does and I am sure you can TASTE the love in each bite.
Bring more of these Vice. It’s a crazy world, and anything refreshing means so much to me.
Nothing is better than seeing this whole family work together and the owner loving it
I love that he always says we and not I. Giving tribute to his team for their success. What a nice man
Really loved this episode. While working at Subway as a youngster I really developed a passion for making sandwhiches, bravo to Gerry for creating a staple in his parts!
Gerry seems like a genuinely good person devoted to his family and his restaurant. He wants people to slow down and relax for a bit and enjoy his food and maybe a bit of conversation instead of grabbing a sandwich and leaving immediately. I can definitely relate to that now that I’m older. I really appreciated him talking about rising so early to be able to clear his head and all the little tasks needed to keep his restaurant humming along. It’s meditation and it’s good for us. What a kind soul.
As a Canadian living on the east coast this place is totally an easy spot to hit on any road trip along the east coast.
Salt of the earth people such as this man are what hold this country together.
That was great! What an uplifting, inspiring portrait of a hard-working family and some terrific-looking food!
5:03 First son/brother/family member is introduced...No name, no intro, Big G's Daddy looks away and folds a towel and laughs it off. 5:26 Big G's daddy introduces his "other" son, pats him on the back! Smiles and tells us how he lucky to have him! I'm sure the sandwiches are good (and big) and for that amount of food very affordable. Awesome restaurant and take care of each other we only have limited amount of time together and family time is the most important!
Was thinking the same thing hmmmm.
He seemed hesitant to call the first person his son. So it may be someone else?
Maybe cus he's gay
Probably cuz the son got a little sugar in his tank just sayin lol
@@freebriccs6134 that's a casual way to say it ;) but he still should be happy he's his son and working hard for the family.
Was not expecting the ad at the end. Great sense of humour. 😂
My grandparents used to take me here. Def will be taking my kids when we go home to visit ❤❤❤❤❤
Wholesome genuine guy. Awesome to see his place get featured and probably flooded with people
Watching somebody be content with life is so refreshing
You can tell the amount of passion they have with what they do....
What a well-deserved video spot! These folks work their butts off, for good reason... they make excellent sandwiches. Our family loves to go here every so often. Never disappointed. Pro-tip - if you go here for the first time, I'd start with HALF a wishbone to get a feel for it. A whole sandwich becomes two filling meals easily.
The same people hating on microwaves will be disappointed after learning just how many establishments use the same kinds of microwaves.
Microwave expert over here watch out
Lol if you work at an establishment with microwaves then you work at dennys
@@eastlospimp True Story? Taco Bell doesn't use nuke boxes.
I don't get why everybody is so salty hes not cooking the fucking food in a microwave hes just heating the sandwich slightly so it's warm... lmao big difference
I worked at a nice restaurant where the cost of every meal averaged at around $30.
I used the microwave much more than I used the oven.
Moved from Maine and I still miss Big G's. Used to chat with Gerry and he always had a joke at the ready. Great food Anda great guy.
I really appreciate the hard work he and his family put in their business! Love a good family run business, good job !!! ❤️
Putting your heart and soul in to giving, your sandwich the tastes flavor and the ingredients to bring a smile to your face ,having the right team, will always keep you going on the right track, too cook and make great sandwich people love.you have you have a style of your own way.
I lived right next door to this place for a few years!!!! I still go from time to time, cannot say enough good about these people! So glad to see them featured here!!!
The chicken curry with Nan is a must.
What a sweet, hard working dude.
Being from the area in the mid 90's I always enjoyed bringing friends from nearby Unity College for their first Big G's sandwich. It's wicked awesome that all these years later they still come back with their kids. And my kid's ❤️ the GIANT Whoopi pies!
Nice, I live here. Not alot of people showcase Maine much so thanks.
Giving a spotlight to lesser known food and food spots is the Maine idea for this channel
Nice
Ha ha! The commercial is perfect! A nice "word of mouth" story and the sandwiches look great!
Listening to Big G and his sons just made me smile through the whole video. Hope I get to visit one day soon.
I'm a night owl, but, man, do I appreciate the feeling you get when you're working and no one else is calling or emailing or tapping you on the shoulder. Those wee small hours are great, whichever side you're seeing them from.
As a young teenager from Boston area, I went to NEMC (New England Music Camp) in Sidney ME for few years back in the mid 90s, we used to take a field trip to Big G's every summer as a special treat. Even in '95ish, the sandwiches were huge and the quality was to die for! Glad to see they're still going strong 👌👍
Big G, amazing story and history with all the success. As I say, “Food brings enemies together.” Especially referring to your statement of “looking forward to food three times a day.” So wholesome and foods made great memories and brought family, friends together. And for those who care about others. God bless
I really love this kind of story above everything else. All around the world. Meet real people, genuine human beings.
Yay! My favorite news source hitting up one of my favorite local food joints! Big Gs is legendary.
The guy says about his son "he's almost 50", and I'm waiting for the son to burst in laughter for his old man making fun of him… but no. He *is* almost 50. Looking 35 at most.
I said the same thing!
What a sweet man. Is effort and love does not go unnoticed. Sandwiches are so underrated I wish I could go there to try some 🤤
The business really is his life and it's great that his family is so supportive and helpful, great video.
What a fantastic feature... so much history and emotion packed into 9 minutes... Vice does some great work.
The way he talks about food is amazing!!
love when a family is involved in such ventures ❤️
Thinking about this video just brought back wild memories of going to Big Gs with my parents and getting sandwiches and a loaf of bread that we'd turn into some of the best french toast of all time
What's so wild about getting a sandwich? You hicks have nothing else going on in your boring dead little town?
Seeing this makes my heart melt not just from living in the town next to big g’s but also the memories I’ve had there with my family hell even had my highschool class supper there
More Maine stuff please. Big G’s is a great start
Definitely has a favourite son you can just tell there's a vibe going 😂
Kinda sad tbh lol
There were 2 sons thought one was a chic
LMAOO
The son in red shirt seems like the prodigal son hehe
I felt bad for the gay son, kinda the reason I don’t treat anyone diff. You could could obviously tell there was hurt in his portion of the video
I’m a few mins in and this man is already a legend in my eyes! This is place is going on my bucket list!!! Big G(s)!
It's great to see people keep a family business going and enjoy themselves and it beats working for somebody else who's always nickel and diming you you know being your own boss is always a benefit and you're never hungry when you work in the kitchen
First son said "we have had different amount of contact over the years." Lol I wonder why. He says that and then my man introduces the other son lovingly 😂
Probably because his son was born gay and Big G didn't approve but finally kind of started accepting it. Sad.
@@thomasrainbow keep telling yourself that. You chose to be a homosexual. No person is born a murderer. No one is born a thief.
You cannot choose to be homosexual or heterosexual. Sexual attraction is innate. It is not governed by the cognitive part of the brain but the instinctual, older part of it, formed early in the womb. The feeling of falling in love or feeling infatuation are all involuntary neurological responses, not cognitive decisions. You cannot choose to make your heart beat faster, palms get sweaty, pupils dilate, blood rush to your skin, or feel butterflies in your stomach at the sight of someone. It simply happens naturally. If that response is only triggered by people of the opposite sex it means you are heterosexual. If it is only triggered by people of the same sex it means you are homosexual. If it happens regardless of the sex of the person, you are bisexual.
Nor is sexual orientation a moral issue like murder or stealing their property. Someone being gay does not violate anyone else's autonomy, freedom, or human rights. Comparing sexual orientation to such things is as ridiculous and irrational as comparing left or right-handedness to such things.
I chose to be an animal rapist because i was born attracted to animals.
@@TURTLEORIGINAL that's a pretty stupid response...
Lived in Maine my whole life, love that Michaud family
Places like this are absolutely beautiful! Family run restaurants cranking out good, honest food.
This family besides the delicious looking sandwiches they create is why folks come back to this deli time and time again.
Looks like an amazing place. What an accomplishment!
lol, Gerry is a cornball in that commerical. glad to see it.
Thank you for sharing this with all of us. I’d love to visit this place some day.
I work with my dad I love this story of yall working together may God keep blessing yall and yalls family food looks good. 🙏🙏
This man will live forever, he's amazing
Used to be in the area all the time and ate breakfast there constantly. Their bread is just huge which translates to the most incredible french toast youve ever seen
Love his perspective that food is very important because its something we really do "need" and we look forward to it 3 times a day. Makes you think about people that work in food that really put hard work and love into what they make and appreciate them more.
I'm very glad you guys did something in my state. We have many wonderful food spots here in Maine. This place is a few towns over from me, I'm gonna go check it out.
Goddamn, grew up in Maine for a little bit as a kid, and they've always had some of the best sandwiches out there. You can tell this man cares, and his sandwiches look freaking amazing. I got to get out there and eat some man. They deserve the clout. This is awesome. Much love to the whole family, and stay blessed 🤙
Seems to have a blessed demeanor and relaxed personality.
So happy you guys went here!! Love it when Maine businesses are showcased!! There's plenty more that are 'Munchies' material
Went with my aunt when I was 15 she loved food we watched cooking shows EVERYTIME we spent time together emerald was our show but these sandwiches changed everything
Please do more stuff from Maine, I love to see it
I live about a 12 minute drive from Big G’s,i can guarantee its the biggest and tastiest sandwiches ive ever eaten. We would go here after football games when i was younger and brings back great memories, even today going there its always a good time. Glad this place in the small towns of Winslow-Waterville is getting recognized on here. Big G’s deserves it and more!
i’m from waterville, used to work up the road from Big G’s. this is wonderful.
This is awesome! The Gerry Garcia sandwich got me through many a hangover.
All the bread and baked goods looked like some of the most delicious I have ever seen, I could just imagine a sandwich on that bread!
He is a machine! What a great small community business.
God bless this man and the rest of the big g crew. I’m definitely making a trip out there soon!
What a lovely man.
When you’re doing what you love, it never feels like work.
This is now on my bucket list. That sandwich looks amazing
I've been there dozens of times, well worth the visit. The sandwiches are bigger than it looks. We asked for cheese on the side once and literally got 14 slices 😂
@@hunterwebber6025 lol. Now that's what I'm talking about lol
SO GOODDDD
Took a detour from Umaine coming back to MA and found this place. Biggest portions ive ever seen and the food was great. Giant whoopie pies FTW
I absolutely love delis and sandwiches!! I 've always wanted to go to Maine anyway! Looks like a must see place to go and eat! Congrats on their success!
as a person who has been to Big G's a lot its great to see this on Munchies :)
wow that is amazing! I love the personalization with the in-house made big bread and the thoughtfulness that Gerry 'Big G' put into those sandwiches and just the confidence to put it out there and make it happen. I think its the honesty and humbleness- this hits something different than most of the videos I've seen. Really cool inside look into an amazing establishment, cant wait to visit one day!
It's always awesome to see my home state represented, even better when it's not just something from Portland!
Word!
Thank you for showing this deli.
Such a nice guy!
As someone that grew up with this place. All I can say to anyone who visits Maine. Make this a spot to visit for both breakfast and lunch! So good and plenty of leftovers :D
OMG this video just made me cry we have a lakehouse in Maine and i can remember ad kid when we'd go to Maine every year on the way home my Grammy and Gramp would have us always stop at Big Gs what a great place. Made my day
Love Maine 🥰 Their Family Dynamic Is So Awesome To See ❤️ What A Treasure 💐 Definitely Need To Get There
Lol “this is my son” after not introducing us to his gay son
Absolutely awesome place to stop at. Used to always stop there when growing up after sports up that way. Play a weekend tournament and whole team including opponents would show up there.
Yep. After the southern track meets, bus loads of teens piling in! I remember the Thanksgiving sandwich vividly
Places like this are what make me miss living in Maine. Such an underrated foodie state. So many great, private ma and pa places.
Big Gs is a damn classic, always make a stop when I’m close
I live like 2 hours away in the NH seacoast, don’t head up that way much but i’ll have to check it out sometime
