- With how ubiquitous Italian beef sandwiches are in Chicago, it's hard to pick just one. But the line outside Johnnie's Beef and its #1 rankings on several best lists are a good indication that this spot is one of the Windy City's favorites.
According to Eater, Johnnie's Italian beef sandwich is considered by many to be the "shining standard that others strive to achieve." Other publications, customers, and critics agree for several reasons. The meat is well-seasoned with an array of secret spices. It's sliced thin and accompanied by either sweet peppers or giardiniera loaded with crunchy carrots, celery, and chiles. Customers who order it dipped get a generous helping of gravy that's sure to be absorbed by the plush French bread holding all that beefy goodness together.

Johnnie's Iconic Italian Beef Is A Delicious Mess Of Beef And Gravy | Legendary Eats | Insider Food
“Without good bread, what’s inside is nothing” truer words have never been spoken 3:43
I'm so damn spoiled to live in Chicagoland - Turano bread is the absolute bomb. Johnnie's is one of the best - I've been making my own Italian Beef sandwiches for decades, and I'm still chasing that flavor profile. It's the Moby Dick to my Ahab - hopefully it doesn't drag me to the depths. Although if I'm going to drown, let it be in that juice.
Regrettably the Turano used doesn't make the cut for me. Its fine if you make it at home and toast the loaf in the oven to firm it up but anything from a restaurant is going to be McDonald's grade
This goes for any sandwich not just an Italian beef. It's the bread that makes the sandwich.
@@thrilhous I make a sandwich even with two pancakes it doesn't matter at all
@@alancosta4760 to be fair that’s your preference when you make it at home, but if you wanted to make it in a restaurant with this kind of longevity, you’d probably make sure those are some damn good pancakes too lol

I had this sandwich while traveling through Chicago a couple months ago. At first glance I was saying "Meh, looks like a typical beef dip sandwich". After taking a bite I was amazed how good it tasted. Looking forward to going back and getting another one.
Lies again? IBM Laptop
What makes it special is that it has that umami or extra beefy flavor that other beef sandwiches don’t have in other cities. I grew up in Philadelphia and the roast beef sandwiches don’t have that extra savory flavor like how it is in Chicago

As a Chicago native I am very happy to see more Chicago eats and to see more local restaurants instead of downtown Chicago ones.
@Dani P NYC food is overrated and bland as hell. Pizza is the only dish that they do the best.
@Dani P period
Yep
Another Chicagoan here agrees.
@@sugreev2001 YNC pizza is made to be rolled and eaten while standing up, however, I would rather have a Chicago tavern crust pizza anytime.
Its 4/20 and Lil Jay influenced me to buy an Italien Beef toasted with a Pepsi & Chips
The secret recipe is Fbg buttah's seranade.
Lol it’s good with mozzarella cheese n sweet peppers n Mayo I put on my but I tried the original butta way with the Pepsi that’s shit was good
I absolutely love their combo beef & sausage, I also never leave there without their homemade Italian Ice, its the best ever!!!!
You said it sister
If I were the manager, at one point I would just tell her "the secret ingredient would be salt and pepper, now stfu."
I see comments saying the sandwich shouldn't be so wet. You really have to try it. No one I know has gone back to a dry Italian Beef after they have tried it dipped. It's a whole other dimension of flavor. The gravy/ au jus adds so much extra creamy, salty, spicy, beef-laden umami flavor to an already delicious sandwich, that the only way it could be improved it by adding a classic Chicago-style Spicy Italian sausage to the sandwich. At this point the sandwich has become so mind-blowingly amazing, that after eating one, the birds will spontaneously sing in the trees as the sun breaks through the clouds, the planets will align, and one will have their faith in a higher-power restored. Peace in our time, people...peace in our time....
edit: changed "Polish" to "Spicy Italian".
I just don’t want to need swimming trunks when I’m eating a sandwhich
If it was that good then they would be dipping sandwiches everywhere
Personally I disagree with your wet sandwich take but your attention to detail while describing was quite worth the read. Props to you sir 😂
I’ve had soggy bread. It’s disgusting
@@damonmartinez382 they are... with condiments 🙃 mayo, mustard or whatever else or grease from the meat. No one wants some dry ass bread
For whatever reason I held out for years on making a trip to buy their Italian beef. I am shocked that for all these years I missed out on what is easily the best Italian beef sandwich on this planet. It is unbelievably GREAT! I don't believe that I can ever enjoy any other restaurant's beef sandwich again. I might be addicted to Johnnie's now! Better late than never.

she’s getting on my nerves, like why keep asking for the spices when he says it’s top secret??? over and over again 🙄
Ikr, they run a food review channel and she's shocked that a restaurant so good that it was frequented by the likes of Anthony Bourdain doesn't want to give out their secret recipe
cause thats the most common schtick for any food show. host ask whats in the spice blend, get told its a secret, guess what it is, get told you got one or two right, try to ask again, get told its still a secret recipe.
I agree. When someone keeps saying no when you keep asking the same question over and over again it comes across as very disrespectful and annoying af. I wish Claudia had done this interview because she is mature, cultured and respectful and actually knows something about food!
Omg I just said the same thing.

I love that they're open till midnight. Had one tonight at about 11:00. I'm gonna have flaming heartburn from the hot peppers, but it was totally worth it. Johnnie's can't be beat!
Oh yeah, extra juicy, sweet and hot is the way to go. The gravy is so good, then the flavor of the peppers and the crunch of the giardiniera. To everyone who says they can't get past the "soggy" bread; you don't dip bread in soup? Or sop up red gravy? You're missing out in a big way if you order a beef dry.

I was born in Chicago but moved when young but went back to visit family. I just remember everyone being into sports.
Really really not cool of her to try and identify the spices they're using on camera. That's their intellectual property and their whole business is based off their recipe. You might think its cute to name the ingredients you see in their seasoning mix for the camera, but thats so unfair to them, the people who let you into their business, tio expose their trade secret.
Do you think all the people watching the video don’t have eyes?
I get what you're saying and I agree. Even though I can look at it and guess the spices. You still shouldn't be trying to expose them like that. If recipe got out someone could open right across from them and hurt business
not really though.
some of the spices are actually common.
they may have named some of the spices, however the ratio is an entirely different story.
i mean, by analogy, you cant really expect to build something even after having all the materials if you dont know how to put it together
Lmao yeah. I'm not vibing with her in this video, not cool.

Always stale old bread that would be hard as a brick if it weren't for all that grease.
@@walkertongdee Yeah but isn't that by design tho? Like you wouldn't want to dip a tender bread in that much liquid because itd just become porridge, you want something super dry and hard, so once it meets the liquid it becomes the right balance of structurally sound + tender

Anybody with any experience in food could look at and taste their spice blend and probably nail almost every ingredient in it.
