Family Food: One of a Kind Italian Deli Food at Tony's Beechhurst

  • In this episode of Family Food, we head to Tony's Beechhurst in Whitestone, Queens to eat Italian deli food like no other. We meet Emilio and Jospehine Polito, immigrants who worked tirelessly to make Tony's into the neighborhood staple that it is today.
Their three sons-Tommy, Mario, and Angelo-all work in the deli too, and will remember your name, your order, and be the first to tell you that nobody's cooking compares with their mom's. Getting to know the Politos is a true first glance into what it means to run a family business. Tony's is their home. We just might move in, too.

Honestly, who could not love these small family owned & operated eateries? Most are true culinary gems maintained by true to their community owners that put quality and service above profit and volume. It's a dying breed in the era of corporate chain fast food and franchise restaurants such as Denny's, Chili's, and such. (Which of course have their place in our community and offer up their own benefits to the middle-class dinners) The biggest reason I fell in love with San Francisco was its vast difference from the Las Vegas, Nevada & Scottsdale, Arizona scene that is just overrun with franchise/chain food, not to mention the countless Walmarts.

I used to work for a company here in Kansas City owned by Italians a few years back. The actual work itself was super shitty but I showed up early every day and always gave them 100% so we always got along. When my grandpa fell ill the same year I started their entire family held me up. My Christmas bonus was $1k cash which was 20x what I expected and they gave me all the time off I needed to take care of my grandpa until he eventually passed. Going into work every day was a treat because the environment was very similar to this. Jovial, caring, positive, playful, empathetic, wholemome. Just all around great people. Then covid hit and I wound up losing the job, as everyone else did and none of us ever looked back. But I still carry with me the fondness and love that I felt from them the whole time. Thank you for sharing this, brought me a much need burst of joy.

teggiano salerno that’s called a “Dream”, not an “American Dream”. Maybe for you there is but trust me, most people but their asses to support their family, and even them life throws the worst at them. We live in a world where people oppress each other for their race, gender, sexuality, religion, creed, and more, and when that person who is being oppressed is trying to rise society takes away opportunities from them, and try to break them... constantly! What works for you may not work for others. You have a roof over your head, and food on your table... that’s living in comfort. Not everyone is as privileged to have what you have... don’t compare your life to others.

Now that I am back, I go to the Armenian bakery, the Korean BBQ, the Italian pizza, the jewish matzo soup, indian food, arabic food, and the options are endless. Thank God for immigrants.

I Laser how did trump raped the poor and the middle class? He thrived off the dumb, that’s how capitalism works, you take deals and opportunities, of course, if they’re legal, which trump has.

Beautiful! Just simply beautiful! Nothing beats a good family business with a mother's homecooking. Great people, they smile when you come in , they smile when you leave, they're polite, they joke around, they serve great food and work hard. Really all you could wish for. The polar opposite of what you get in a restaurant chain.
