Hey Matt! Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas, Brother! My $0.02 as a vet RC who mostly teaches 3whl BRC’s these days: 3-wheelers are extremely popular, despite the pandemic and horrible economy. In the past, when people took the class, we had mostly student-provided trikes with a mix of H-D, Can-Am, and some other 1-2 conversions (GL’s, etc). Can-Am decided to heavily sponsor these courses, and as a result, enrollment and demand has gone thru the roof. We get new MY Ryker’s every year, and the students get the course for about a third of the regular price. I understand that Can-Am dealers have a tough time stocking them because of the huge demand. While cheaper on the entry-level side compared to H-D l, these aren’t cheap. Personally, as a longtime H-D rider, I personally prefer the MoCo’s products. Having said that, there is a definite advantage to 2-1 trikes. They’re cheaper to enter the mkt with, and easier to learn to ride. With auto or semi auto transmissions, single-pedal braking, and all the electronics, it’s just a matter of learning the basics to ride it competently. Additionally, two wheels up front makes it much easier to keep track of all the wheels, and impart confidence when turning/braking and accident avoidance maneuvers. When you look at them, and consider the origins of the parent company, it’s not a giant leap to see that these are a natural progression from the snowmobiles that they evolved from. H-D’s trikes trace their lineage back to the flathead-powered Servicar, and used Lehman as official trike conversion OEM’s until they brought them in-house. No doubt H-D’s are expensive, but they are built for the long-haul and there is no question in my mind who builds the most durable and beautiful product. They’re all fun to ride, and while I’m not quite ready to make the jump to 3-wheels, I can definitely see the appeal. Whether you are vertically-challenged, have some form of disability, are tired of holding-up a heavy 2whl monster, or just wanna have fun, 3-wheelers offer a more-stable way to hit the open road with knees in the breeze. You make some very good points on both 1-2 and 2-1 trikes. My first was the Can Am F3 limited. I traded my Ultra Limited Low in on it. I was used to 4 wheelers so. The learning curve for me wasn’t bad. The auto was nice as was the stability. The biggest drawback was that I was bored riding it. Then I started doing some additions and, found that all that plastic didn’t appeal to me. I told the dealer I bought it from that I was going to miss the rumble of the Harley as on rolled out of the dealer next door. Fast forward a month and I started dealing on a Tri Glide. Ultimately ended up with a 2023 RG3. Got my rumble back. My opinion is that the rg3 handles better. I even think the steering is easier than the power steering in the can am. The ride comfort is a bit different. On the can am with the independent suspension on the front it feels good but, it’s still in my opinion a bit rougher than the front of a rg3. As to the rear well you’ve got two vs one wheel going over bumps. With the Harley yes it is rougher. There are some aftermarket mods that can be done to smooth it out some ( I’ve done one of them). Overall for me the RG3 is a much better bike than the Spyder. Had to add this. Yes you do need to be more aware of the width in the back but, I’ve also read where some have had problems with the width in the front. As for me I’ve put heavy equipment through tight spaces for a lot of years so, the awareness comes as second nature.

@@mikemourer2416 Thanks, Mike! Personally, I’d rather have a H-D myself. Expensive and heavy, but I prefer having a clutch, shifter and discrete braking, all with the H-D attributes the faithful know & love. Having two wheels out back and all the width can be problematic, especially in tight quarters and/or in accident avoidance maneuvers, but practicing perfect skills makes for perfect technique over time. The Can-Am’s are fun, and Spyder variants can be as downright luxurious as a loaded GL or CVO Ltd. Like yourself, all that plastic is off-putting to me and does not lend itself to durability (ask me how I know). It’s also my opinion that all the electronic nannies designed by Bombardier in an effort to render their vehicles as idiot-proof as is possible are very intrusive and curtail the fun much too soon. I also don’t like how low you ride compared to any std motorcycle or M/C-based 1-2 trike. The old see/be seen takes a hit (no pun intended) in something that low.
The day I bought the rg I was offered a test ride but, after just having surgery the day before I turned it down. Well right up to the point of me actually owning it. I took it out on their course and put it through a little. Even found the “box” and did a couple of figure 8s. I was more than happy with my results. When possible I do a few things here and there like the swerve and more figure 8s.
I am 46, learned to ride over 20 years ago, have a valid motorcycle license, have no disabilities, and opted for a trike. Have to tell you I have taken nothing but sh, er, guff for it. Other riders either assume I have a disability or say something along the lines of "well at least you got something to ride until you get a real bike" Very glad you guys are talking about trikes being for everyone but the problem is convincing everyone else. The attitudes toward trike riders is abysmal! So much so, in fact, I have considered selling and getting a 2 wheeler, but then I go for a ride and that idea slides out of my head faster than a greased hog sliding down a wet shoe! There was a day last summer, and I mean a perfect riding day, I was on ride having a blast and thought "would this ride be any better or worse if I had one less wheel?" Conclusion I came to was "NOPE!" To all the haters and the judgers let's remember the words of all of our mothers "if you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything at all." To all my fellow riders out there keeping it on 3 remember haters gon hate! Ride what you love and love what you ride!

My dad has a Road Glide 3. I really love it. He gets quite a bit of attention with it. I rode it a few times, it's amazing, it handles really nice and is super simple to ride.... I'm 33 and I'd like to have a road glide 3 myself. I can't speak highly enough about them.

With that being said, make sure you get the Road Glide 3... It's by far the best looking and best equipped trike from Harley-Davidson.😉

Totally agree, I have held a motorcycle license for over 50 years. I have also raced them, both solo and sidecar. They both have their merits. Sidecar Grasstrack racing is fantastic. My wife prefers riding on the back of a trike or a sidecar outfit.
To your point, I am 73 yo and love my RG3 but just got back from an hour on my Sportster S. Smiled on both!
Love the RG3. I ride an M8 Fat Bob, but when my wife rides with, we ride a 23 Grey Haze RG3. Love the stability when 2 up!!

you guys are right, there is something captivating about that Road Glide 3, Harley has definitely improved their trike game. tI's a stunningly beautiful motorcycle, especially in that Shark Skin Blue, and I definitely love the wheels they put on it. My local dealer received the same one the other day and I couldn't stop staring at it. I've been telling myself for years that I'd love to have a baby blue bagger, can't wait to see this color on the other touring bikes. Keep up the good work fellas, good stuff.
Thanks for covering the trike line Matt. I am nearing the 70's milestone and love the Harley Trike lineup. I owned a '19 Tri-Glide for three years and enjoyed riding it (including Tail of the Dragon), but sold it to buy a '23 RG3. I find the RG3 more rider friendly and responsive (I ride solo so Tri-Glide was a lot of bike for solo rider). I still have my Road King Special but feel much more comfortable on the RG3.😊

Hi Matt & Nick ... I enjoy your alls videos ... FYI - I traded my 2018 Ultra Trike and bought the 2023 Billard Blue model RG3 in March 2023. I am 75 years young and need the stability of three wheels......I had my dealer install the H-D Screaming Eagle Stage II kit with Cobra exhaust before I even drove out the door. ( because I had a Stage II on my 2018 and I just like the Xtra- power and the HD cam sound). I have since put 8,000 Miles on it. My longest trip was 9-days from central TEXAS to Monument Valley in Utah and EAST to Durango and back home. The RG3 besides being beautiful, handles GREAT, better than the Ultra. (I think because it is a bit lighter, especially on the front end) . As you and Nick noted the front lowers will be missed especially when a bug or pebble hits you in the shin. I almost always ride solo but I put a luggage rack and sissy bar and back rest on which enhances the luggage carrying ability tremendously. In fact on my trip to Utah I loaded the trunk with bike neccesities, tools, air pump, bike cover, rain gear, extra cold weather gear and loaded all my clothes, shaving kit, etcetera in my luggage on the luggage rack and sissy bar. The shark nose fairing works exceptionally well for me and did not need to change out the windshield. And I upgraded the stereo system so I can hear over 65 mph.
THE ONLY complaint I have is the NAVIGATION SYSTEM... riders beware it needs a LOT OF IMPROVEMENT. For reliability I use Google Maps on my Android. THANKS LAIDLAW ... I always look forward to your videos, especially when the "crew" takes off on their road trips.... HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!

Enjoyed my Tri-Glide Ultra for the past two years. Finally traded it for an Ultra Limited this year and now I’m on two wheels. I’d have to agree with Matt regarding the Trike axle. It’s a little rough on bumps but there are mods you can do to improve the ride.
The best thing HD corporate could do for each new or potential buyer of any bike is tell them to subscribe to your channel. Always great info
That is a great idea Matt have the Harley Engineers on a pod cast with you. I would love to hear what they have to say. Would be great if you could get a two wheel, and three wheel engineers on a podcast.
For Christmas 2024 Harley should come out with a Crushed Coal color with an advertising slogan that say's : "Have You Been BAD This Year!"

I'm not quite ready for a trike in my garage yet, but these are great looking bikes. The blue on the Road Glide 3 is beautiful along with the white on the Free Wheeler. I love the look of the wheels on those two models also. I think the Freewheeler would look a bit better if it had the headlight off of the Road King with that big headlight nacelle along with the clear windshield. I do think Harley should have put the door on the trunk of the Road Glide 3 and the Free Wheeler on the back like the Tri Glide instead of the top so that a person could add a tour pack to either of these bikes. You can get a Honda Goldwing with a trike conversion although it doesn't come from the factory, but I would prefer the Harley and I own a Goldwing now. I also prefer these to the Can Am, although I think the Ryker is probably a better choice if someone wanted to ride really spirited. They just look too much like a snowmobile for me. Maybe sometime in the future. Great video Matt as usual.

The new Harley trikes are totally groovy. The basic trike in black and white you showed remind me of the old 1940's police trike. Well done guys. Harley-Davidson has always produced the coolest bikes.
I'm 40 and have owned two freewheelers as well as 8 two wheel bikes. I'm a trike guy love it. I had a 2019 with road king windshield and now have a 2021 with batwing fairing and stereo system.
To the point, for marketing purposes saying that trikes are strictly for handicap purposes is degrading, I have a Freewheeler and I have a Street Glide CVO and I enjoy both specifically because both my wife and I can enjoy the same views while riding the scenic route without having to worry too much about distractions on the road.
Personally I believe that those who are more likely to put trikes on the “handicapped side “ don’t really have the luxury to afford one and talk about it on their blatant ignorance.
at nearly $60k AUD for a Road Glide is probably why we don't see many in Australia , thats a lot of money

If Harley ever makes a RG3 with the TGU back end, then I'll give up my Can-Am. Not giving up my storage.

I think Harley should give the Tri Glide a new fresh look and go with Freewheeler, RG3 rear fenders and wheels to make it look more sporty.

I hate the way the first thing every video says is “if you’re getting older, or if something is physically wrong with you”.
I can’t afford one, but I’ve wanted a Tri Glide since my early 30s. The misplaced assumption in most videos is that anyone who enjoys riding, loves all the leaning in curves and performance riding. I just love the experience of being in the wind. I think the marketing is missing a segment of customers because of these misplaced assumptions.
I’m glad I could make a video that directly dispels this false assumption.
Wish HD would just go all LED lighting
Military vehicle driving training explained to us that independent suspension allows the vehicle (jeep)to pass high center before lifting the inside wheel, allowing rollover before operator detection. You can feel inside wheel lifting with a straight axle, allowing possible operator correction. Might still be advantageous, even with computer oversight, which can startle the operator, too..
When i was ten in 1967 my older brother owned a retired Detroit Police 1952 HD Servi-Car. When he bought it in 1965 the rear box was gone so he mounted a high back bucket seat. It was the first motorcycle i ever got to ride and the "cool" part was the ability to reverse out of a parking spot. Took a minute to get used to the tank shifter & boot clutch but by the summer of 1968 it was a piece of cake. When he was drafted he stored the bike at his buddies parents house but it was destroyed in a garage fire. At that time our folks only had a little one car garage and he didn't want to leave the bike outside for the year or so that he served in Vietnam.
Well said Matt. I still love my 2004 Heritage Softail but haven't ridden it since buying my 2022 Freewheeler (it does reming me of my 04 Raid King). Ok don't laugh, but I'm afraid I'll forget to put my feet down on 2 wheels haha! Hey I'm 72, I forget things sometimes 😅

For someone like me with arthritis in my lower body, and who mostly just wants a daily driver, a touring package is not an issue, I'm liking that freewheeler. I have a Deluxe I haven't ridden in years.

I always thought the Tri-glide looked lopsided because the rear end looks huge! The RG3 is definitely a sweet looking bike and one I would ride! I also like the look of the Freewheeler because it also has a balance to its stance.
Great Video Matt. In looking at your crystal ball, When do you think HD will start putting the 23 CVO gauge/entertainment cluster on the Tri-Glides, Road Glides, etc.?
Trikes: so many very different types available. HD, Boom, Rewaco, Yamaha, Bombardier, etc. Trikes are for whoever want them. It’s a choice, like sidecars with or without leaning, or even a morgan three-wheeler is one, too, aside from roadsters of all crazy or less crazy types. A motorcycle is something very different, nothing changes that.

I am on my second Tri Glide I got a 21 now I love it I wouldn't trade this one in for nothing the only disadvantage that I don't like about it is on the fairing they used to have a shut off for the airflow which I wish they would have kept that's the only flaw I see other than that y'all ride safe and keep all three wheels on the ground

I really wish they made th RG3 with the Ultra rear, I'd buy that, no doubt. Maybe they will in the next few years. I love the Shark Nose faring.

You can get fairings on the Freewheeler but they are third party. My 2015 that I recently purchased has a Hoppe fairing.
So I have a question can u put a batwing on a free wheeler along with the radio for it

Heated grips and painted inner fairings should be standard on the tri glide trike. Own a 2022triglide nice ride.

I don’t really have that data. I know a lot more sell on the east coast than the west coast. For us we’ve probably seen a slight increase overall over the past 10 years. It ebbs and flows

Depends on what state you're in. Some require 2 people per vehicle some require 3, check your local laws.

There's no doubt Willy G and the entire HD design team sees you're Channel and takes notes on my commentary, years ago I asked you if we could order a 3 wheeler that wasn't and old grampa tri Electra glide ,with the road glide shark nose in black no chrome no sofa seat no pizza box with a bigger motor performance and here we are!

From everything I’ve learned in researching HD trikes, it is apparent that the suspension is a half-ass design, requiring retrofit shocks for optimal handling. Why does HD do that? That’s a “good enough” mindset, rather than one of excellence. Price point, I suppose. But you would think that an upgrade option would be made available.

You have everything sounding nice except the volume level of the bumper music is really loud. Sounds especially bad at the end when it is playing at the same time as your voice.

I think HD should spend some R&D money on a DTC transmission and adaptive cruise control. I ride with a club with mostly senior riders. One of the biggest issues we all have after a full day of ridding and getting stuck in Heavy traffic is our clutch hand gets worn out. Adaptive cruise control? Well I can't see why any premium product used for touring would not have that as a standard feature. A number of seniors are starting to show up on CAN- Am Spyders. All are former HD die hards?

We dont know. I suppose there is the possibility. There is a official launch of the 2024 model year on January 24th
I think the prices are way too high for most people and the way they have it priced it’s really good for people with a lot of money or disposable income and that’s not too cool for just your average earning person who likes Harley and would like a trike, but would have to go to an older used one to afford it.

Other mfgs don't use HD's 1-2 trike config because it's significantly less safe, both in turning and deceleration. Note that ATVs were originally 1-2 trikes -- so many people got hurt on them the US gov had the mfgs sign a consent decree banning their sale in the 80s.
To me, the best looking one is also the cheapest.
I honestly think the Tri Glide is the least attractive one of all, and to me, that's very important.

Do you need a motorcycle license to drive the trikes?
Depends on the State you're in but in California you just need a car driver's license. You don't need your M1 Endorsement.

In NJ, yes and no. If you obtain or already have a “M” (motorcycle) endorsement on your DL, you can ride any two/three wheeler. If you take the 3WhlBRC or are examined at the NJMVC on your 3whl M/C and are sucessful during your skill evaluation, you’ll obtain a 3Whl RESTRICTION on your DL…similar to a lens/glasses restriction. This means that you can ONLY operate a three-wheeler. Auto-cycles like the Polaris Slingshot are NOT motorcycles and may be operated with a std. Class-D Auto license (with no helmet or additional training required…not good IMHO).
Wow… very different by state. In FL, you have to have your motorcycle stamp… seems silly to me, but there you go. Great video, as always.
Made for short people as sat on one and knees were above my butt. Looks goofy to ride with knees up in the air indeed. No forward controls offered.
Floor boards are a feet-in front- position. Tall people do have knees above hips though. You can extend out the boards and brake pedal as well as change the seat to help with this.
As soon as you make the purchase for a trike, reach back and get the rest of the money you will need to make it ride better and run cooler. Plus the handle bars totally suck. Cost for suspension front and back, tuner, air box and exhaust to get rid of the damn catalytic convert you will spend another $5000.
