  • Hey CZcams! Today, we're checking out fellow content creator DKDKTV's video, "KPOP HISTORY in 20mins | From SeoTaiji to BTS". Now that we've listened to a few songs, I wanted to watch another overview video to fill in the gaps in my head and maybe pick up on things with an updated perspective.

I’m so glad others didn’t appreciate the constant talking. I, for one, can’t hear two competing conversations.
However, I like the concept of a history of Kpop. I’d be interested in Kpop groups’ records in:
1st group to hit XX sales, iTunes, physical records,
      Group with the most songs.
Groups with the largest audiences at concerts, largest fan base
Groups asked to perform at important events or won prestigious awards
Groups with the fastest sales of concert tickets
Groups that have performed in the most countries.
      Thanks

My advice is to always just do stuff the way that fits you the most. People will yell at you to change your reaction style no matter what you do, so if talking over the video is how you feel most natural keep doing it. If you don't mind pausing, then feel free to pause or rewind. Some people just watch the whole video and then talk at the end. Whatever works for you is what you should do. Excited to see you jump into K-Pop.

Really excited to go on this journey with you! It’s super cool you’re starting from 1st gen and working your way to the present day; I think it’ll be interesting to see how the music, videos, and performances evolve over that time.
Regarding the “flash mobs” around 21:43, those are clips from events called “random play dance.” Since choreography is a huge part of kpop, many fans will learn the dances to songs and almost all companies nowadays will release dance practice videos of at least the title track for each album. At these events songs will be played at random and anyone who knows the dance can go into the middle and perform it. It’s a really fun part of kpop fandom culture and if you’re ever curious you can just search “random play dance” on youtube and you’ll find tons of videos from these events all over the world.
I know there’s tons and tons of content out there so absolutely no pressure to check these out, but if you’re looking for a place to start these are some personal recommendations for 2nd gen songs:
Girls’ Generation - Gee, The Boys, Genie
    2NE1 - I Am The Best, Fire
    TVXQ - Mirotic
    BIGBANG - Fantastic Baby
Super Junior - Sorry Sorry, Bonamana, Mr. Simple
SHINee - Replay, Ring Ding Dong, Lucifer
INFINITE - Be Mine, The Chaser
(Note that several of these groups released music past the 2nd generation era or are even still active today. In that case I’ve stuck to only recommending songs that were released in 2012 or earlier.)

Hi Mochi Mimi! Yes, it's already interesting with the Generation 1.5 stuff, and from the previews I've seen so far it looks like the jump to Gen 2 will still be huge!
That's really cool re: the random play dance! I know I've seen a whole bunch of people copying choreography from songs all over social media, but I didn't know that there were so many organized fan events.
And then of course, thanks for the groups/songs recommendations! :)

I truly wish you good luck in getting through all of Kpop as a reactor rather than just someone listening whenever they can in their free time, I can see how that might be overwhelming. Hopefully you can get through a diverse enough selection that gives you a good idea of what genres/groups you prefer so later you can focus on those after you feel like you fully understand kpop. Don't mind anyone who might flame you for not putting enough attention on their faves, they probably don't see the bigger plan of discovery. I look forward to your journey!

bts have topped the ifpi global recording artist chart for two years in the row now, first artist to do so, also their albums have topped the albums chart multiple times, they were the third most listened artist globally on spotify in 2021, bts are currently one of the biggest artist in the world, they have surpassed the k-pop label long ago, have even said so themselves that they do not want to be labeled and honestly do not care much about that, bbygang's videos 'bts vs k-pop' and 'bts more than k-pop' are very good, and here is what rm has said about it in an rolling stone interview one time 'I know that many fans don’t see BTS as part of K-pop. And you, yourselves, have said that “BTS is the genre.” How do you see it?
That’s a very important debate. Because what they call K-pop, that genre is expanding very fast. For example, some so-called K-pop groups have only foreigners, from Europe, India, China, like, everywhere. There are no Korean members, but they do the K-pop thing, they’re switching the parts, and so on. BTS is expanding very fast as well. And K-pop is now so wide. Somebody could say that K-pop is for Koreans who sing a Korean song. That could be K-pop. But what about “Dynamite”? We sing the song in English. But we’re all Koreans, so somebody may say it’s a K-pop song. Or they may say it’s just a pop song, because it’s in English. But we don’t actually really care about whether people see us as inside or outside K-pop. The important fact is that we’re all Koreans, and we’re singing a pop song. So that’s the reason why we said that our genre is just BTS. That debate is very important for the music industry, but it doesn’t mean very much for us members.'

I guess there is no 100% rule to dividing the generations, but most people would say that the 3rd gen started in 2012 with EXO and the 4th gen started at the end of 2017 with The Boyz. We are in the 4th gen now.
Every year there are tens if not hundreds of groups debuting, so it is impossible to listen to all kpop groups.
    Have fun in your journey.
I recommend you to stop the video when you want to say smth - during a music video and especially during videos like this or any other talking video. you are missing information if you talk over and there might be an answer to some question you have, and in general people want to both listen to the video and to you and if you both talk at the same time it is distracting :) the same applies to music videos.
kpop fans are very dedicated, and even if your video becomes super long because of all the pauses and talking, we will enjoy watching it :)

    • @ruthfischer7615
      @ruthfischer7615 Před rokem +1

From my understanding of the topic there were already somewhen at the end of second gen. debuting over 100 Idol groups each year. It is a certain privilege standpoiint that we as viewers don't notice these artists.
They are non-famous and are lucky if they manage to show an abridged version of one of their songs at a music show. Music shows have three rooms for Idols. In the third are groups that have no spot in the program but hope that someone needs a filler. Hopefully their performance gets upöoaded and enough views otherwise....
Most groups do not survive their first 100 days. Maybe 1% of all those debuting groups stay around for a few years. It is that competitive.
Personally I believe that the GP already began to be annoysed with the Idols at thelatest at the end of second gen. Such feelings take time to develop. We know that BTS were already confronted with this BS in their debut year 2013. "they are no real artists" and the like.
bby gang mag helps with understanding some of that (for example "you are wrong about K-pop") as do documentaries like "The Rise of Bangtan".

I'm an early 90s baby and the earliest memories I have of KPOP are songs from 1st gen mix gender group, KOYOTE, and SES. But at the time I didn't know it was KPOP since I'm from the US. However my proper intro to KPOP was BoA (tho I knew her Japanese music first thanks to anime), TVXQ, and SUJU. My early KPOP days were dominated by SM groups up until Girls Generation. I'd say my biggest turning point to KPOP was in 2009, when YG's 2NE1 entered the scene. No group, even to this day, has affected me as much as 2NE1. They were so different. They went against the norm and become trailblazers for the industry. To this day they remain my ultimate music group of any industry. They're the only group I'm willing to associate myself with the fandom, otherwise I stay clear of fandom culture. Fast forward to today, I'm no longer as invested as it's become too exhausting trying to keep up, especially with the oversaturation. Having seen as much KPOP as I have, I'm a lot more selective now. With that said, the artists I love and recommend are 2NE1, Big Bang, iKON, WINNER, Lee Hi, and AKMU (including solo projects). They are/were all YG artists. lol

It's funny how we were exposed to little tidbits of KPop here and there in our lives, but never directly associated it. :p I know I've heard of BoA before but the interest never grabbed me until now. I get what you mean regarding being "too exhausting" lol -- there's an overwhelming amount of stuff out there! But I think once you figure out what you like, it's a lot easier to be selective and focus on those things! Thanks for the comment! :)

When you get to 3rd/4th gen, I definitely recommend Oh My Girl's (3rd gen), "Secret Garden," "Remember Me," "Nonstop," and "Dun Dun Dance." (A few of their songs)
I recommend WJSN's (3rd gen), also known as Cosmic Girls in English, "Secret," "Save me, Save you," "As you wish," "Unnatural," and, "Last Sequence."
I recommend Rocket Punch's (4th gen), "Bim Bam Bum," "Ring RIng," "Chiquita," and "Flash."
I really recommend watching survival shows, such as Produce 48, the show that created IZ*ONE, a temporary group. They give a lot of insight into idol training, and they're overall just super interesting to watch. Plus they leave you knowing who is in the group, as well as knowing members of other groups coming out because many contestants go on to debut in groups from exposure on the show.
I recommend all of IZ*ONE's songs, even their non title tracks. If you wanted, you could stream the show on Twitch because copyright issues aren't as bad there as youtube, the saved video will mute copyrighted portions, or you could just delete it afterwards to be safe. Up to you, you could also just react to IZ*ONE and watch the show on your own time obviously.
When IZ*ONE disbanded, many members went on to debut in new, and permanent, groups or debut as solo artists.
IVE and Le Sserafim, 2 of the hugest 4th gen groups, have members who used to be in IZ*ONE in them.
Produce 101 is also a great survival show to watch since it produced I.O.I, and then many members went on to become solo artists or debut in the groups Gugudan, Weki Meki, WJSN, and Pristin.
IU (3rd gen, although maybe some people say 2nd?) is the greatest solo artist in Korea. I recommend "Twenty-three," "Through the Night," "Eight," "Lilac," "Blueming," and"Strawberry Moon." Though I'd say the large majority of her music is highly praised, so it's harder to choose recommendations.
I hope I worded this well enough. If you by chance have any questions I'm super willing to answer.

Really liking your reactions so far! Please take your time getting to know the groups and whenever you get to BTS, you'll know why they are B.T.S. and why they deserved a whole separate section in DKDKTV's introduction you just watched.
BTS is self-produced and they put a lot of emphasis and effort into their lyrics. You mentioned how it's important that you understand what's being said, so please check out lyrics translations (with added context) at doolsetbangtan. One thing that really sets BTS apart from their peers is the unparalleled control over their music and sound (some members are award-winning producers and writers), and their deeply meaningful and clever lyrics that touch on themes relatable to every one at any stage of life. Their LIVE performances are also legendary. Way back in 2017, the pioneer of kpop as it's known today, Seo Taiji and The Boys, named BTS as their successors, which was very notable because there were more popular groups like Shinee, EXO, etc from bigger companies that were more popular by some metrics at the time, but Seo Taiji selected BTS because of their authenticity, the high quality of their self-made music, their passion and dedication to their craft, and the fact they've never shied away from addressing difficult topics.
Really looking forward to following your journey. K-pop fandoms can be a bit overwhelming, but please know many of us support you and are happy many people are exploring this wonderful genre.

I do have some reccs (it seems you are going in order of generation so I will categorise them by gen and how popular they are). Take your time!!!
    3rd gen
    1. BTS (most popular ever ofc) - Fire, Spring Day, Fake Love, Blood Sweat & Tears, Mic Drop are my favs by them
    2. PSY (I could be wrong on him being 3rd gen, very very well known, prob most popular soloist internationally... known best for Gangnam Style) - That That
    3. A.C.E (extremely underrated. my 3rd fav boy group and my fav song by them released a year ago only has 3m views - not a lot compared to most kpop songs) - Higher, Undercover, Down, Changer are my favs by them but Cactus, their debut song, was in the 1st video you reacted to here.
    4. Blackpink (most popular girl group internationally and my fav girl group) - Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du, Shut Down, How You Like That, Lovesick Girls are my favs by them
    5. Seventeen (very popular) - Fear, Hit, HOT, Rock with you are all extremely good. Fear and rock with you are on my top 30 title tracks ever.
    6. EXO (very popular) - Monster, Love Shot, Obsession, Tempo
    4th gen
    1. Ateez (extremely popular, my all time favorite group) - Answer, Fireworks, Inception, Deja Vu, Turbulence are all on my top 30 title tracks ever but tbh all of their songs are amazing. Answer is my favorite song like literally ever and was featured in the first video you ever reacted to as well. Guerilla is also a song I highly reccomend!
    2. Aespa (very popular) - Black Mamba, Savage, Next Level. Black Mamba is my personal fav girl group song!
    3. (G)I-dle (quite popular) - Oh My God, Hwaa, Tomboy. Oh My God was on your first 2 vids.
    4. Everglow (popular) - First, La Di Da, Dun Dun.
    5. Oneus (quite underrated, my 2nd fav boygroup) - Same Scent, Luna, Come Back Home, Twilight, Black Mirror. 1st 3 are in my top 30 title tracks ever.
    6. Stray Kids (extremely popular) - Maniac, Miroh, Gods Menu
Take as much time as you need with any of these songs and also you do not have to react to all. I recommend choosing 1 song from a group and if you like it, reacting to another. For the most part each group has a specific sound BUT they do play with different genres from time to time. Also obviously you do not have to do this whatsoever and I will not expect you to, but my recent video "ranking my favorite kpop title tracks" has a little over 30 songs in it (not full, maybe about 30 seconds each? prechorus and chorus) and could be a good way to be exposed to a lot of songs at once. Most of it is 4th gen (I tend to like 4th gen music the most personally) with 3rd gen sprinkled in (Seventeen, BTS, Blackpink, EXO).

I love that you are taking the time to get to know the history of KPop while you're going on this journey because there are so many influential artists from the earlier generations that often get overlooked or forgotten by most reactors. So props to you for starting from the beginning. Most influential from what I've seen from each generation you should check out (which are often mentioned by idols as their influences)
Gen 1: You're already checking out the most influential but also check out Turbo they had a pretty unique sound but their songs are iconic in KPop, especially Black Cat Nero. Also Epik High has influenced MANY of the rappers in KPop.
Gen 2: Big Bang (known in the KPop community as the "Kings of KPop" because of their influence despite their group going through several scandals) , Shinee (known in the KPop community as the "Princes of Kpop" because of their influence), TVXQ (also considered among KPop Royalty but have lost all but 2 members), Super Junior, 2PM, Girls Generation, 2NE1 and (f)X (the last 2 are disbanded but still iconic and influential)
Gen 3- The obvious top 2 most influential are Exo and BTS (the ones who started my journey and still a top group for me but I am now a multistan) for Boy Groups while Twice and Black Pink were top 2 for girl groups but many have looked up to iKon, Block B, Seventeen, GOT7 and BTOB so they are worth checking out also.
Gen 4: This is the current generation but the ones who have stood out the most are Stray Kids, Ateez, TXT (Tomorrow X Together), Itzy and The Boyz
Many of these groups have members who had/have very successful solo careers alongside still being active in their respective groups.
It's worth noting Taemin from Shinee is one of the only artists to debut in 3 different generations and is probably one of the most influential people in KPop (G Dragon being another from Big Bang who has the title "King of KPop") that came from a group. He debuted in Gen 2 with Shinee, Gen 3 as a soloist and Gen 4 with Super M. Taemin is known in the industry as the "Idol's Idol" because MANY MANY MANY idols look up to him (idols after him) or respect him (older idols).

Love that you're doing a deep dive into Kpop. You're the only reactor I know who's actually going through all the generations.
I know it won't be quite some time until you get to 3rd and 4th gen groups, but I really wanted to put NCT 127 on your radar when you do get to that point. They're the latest male group to launch out of SM, but arguably has the most experimental sound out of all of the current 4th gen Kpop male groups. There's a recent performance they did on Dinggo which is a medley of their hits:
    czcams.com/video/SM5VZzWYO5Y/video.html
If you don't have time to go through the medley, I would recommend the following songs by them: Sixth Sense; Kick it (which is a tribute to late Bruce Lee), Cherry Bomb (my personal favorite), and Make a Wish.

    • @MicheleDoenges
      @MicheleDoenges Před rokem

@@xynxreacts it's more than just comparing groups, because it's not just fanwars, especially with ARMY. It's the exact reason I left the fandom and am just a casual BTS fan now. Both fandoms have fan cultures that are a bit...
problematic......For example, James Corden (well-known to be friends with the group) joked about BTS's fandom being teenage girls (that is actually the predominant demographic, 11-19 F) like The Beatles' fandom was, and the ARMY tanked the ratings of his show and threatened his family and said some really nasty, racially insensitive and fat-shaming things to and about him, to the point that BTS's leader scolded them on live television and kind of made James apologize to them to get them to stop, even though he was right and the people causing problem were all teen and pre-teen girls who got offended 🤣. They have chase members of BTS in the streets, leaked details about what car a member was buying, when, and from where, bullied a tattoo shop into temporarily closing and laying off an employee because she is the tattooist and high school friend of one of the members and someone leaked CCTV footage of them simply coexisting, and bullied a model to the point she had to close the comments section if her Instagram for being in the same place at the same time as a member, completely by coincidence. I have less experience with Blinks beyond fanwars because I was never part of the fandom, but they start fights out of nowhere because someone coughed and it sounds like "BTS". Apparently they take their "Pretty Savage" moniker too literally. KPOP fandoms in general like to say that people who behave badly aren't real fans, but all fandoms have good and bad people in them. The bad are just as much fans as the good. This is OBVIOUSLY just a small fraction of both fandoms, but with fandoms so large, a small fraction doesn't mean a small number, and many angry hands make light work of runining someone. Just......be careful.
