This is a relatively old/outdated reference video. We're solidly in 4th gen now, as that started at the beginning of 2018, and this video includes only a few of the 4th-gen groups, most of them among the earliest members of that gen (like Stray Kids, Ateez, The Boyz).
It was also a touch wishy-washy on this and made it sound like an opinion, not fact, so to clarify: Kpop isn't a genre -- it's an industry. It's just Korean popular music, and the music under that umbrella is a wildly diverse as everything you have to choose from in the western market. That said, there are a couple primary "flavors" (kpop has some adherence to choosing between being sweet/bubblegum/cute or being sour/spicy), and a lot of groups can get shoved into those concepts by their companies and repetitive producers (that's not shade on the artists; that's criticism of the industry). So you'll benefit from listening to a wide range of groups until you find ones that suit you, be they the "sweet," the "spicy," or new-genre trailblazers like Stray Kids.
A warning: Fanwars are _insane_ in kpop. The groups/members are very often friends and/or admirers of each other, as it's a tight-woven industry, and members of many diverse groups were trainees together in different companies. But every single fandom has a small but very loud and very vicious toxic element ready to attack and destroy anyone they consider a "threat" to the group they stan, even if the actual idols in those groups are literally best friends. These so-called fans give a terrible impression to new kpop listeners, and there's no way to avoid eventually encountering some of them and their whackjob behavior (especially if you're on twitter, which is ground zero; but it happens on all socmed).
    So:
1] Please know that they are a very small minority; it's just that they're nuts and ugly and LOUD, so they come across as being far more representative of overall fandoms than they really are. Ignore them completely; block them if they comment on your channel or any of your socmed. Don't try to reason with them, argue with them, educate them; they're irrational and just thrive on the validation of engagement. Ignoring and blocking is the only way to limit their poison.
2] Never compare groups or idols; it's an almost guaranteed invitation to some toxic fan trying to use you to start a fight with another fandom, usually in your comments section. (It's also just generally considered kind of disrespectful to the idols/groups, like they're all just different, mostly interchangeable brands of chicken soup you're choosing between. Don't be Billboard, basically.)
You're going to hear a couple words that sound similar to the N-word. They're not. They're basically "you" and "I" in informal Korean, but they can catch new people off-guard if not forewarned.
Kpop groups/idols almost all have a much closer, more content-rich "relationship" with their fans than do western artists. That's honestly where some of the biggest cultural differences are apparent. For example, I have yet to see an internationally famous western artist make a promise to stream live every week to interact with fans, hang out and listen to random music, share advice and personal stories, talk about their struggles and give support...and then actually follow through on a promise of that magnitude even in the middle of tours, even while filming other things, even while having to hide out in a car in a parking garage at an awards show, whatever -- for YEARS. And yet Bang Chan of Stray Kids exists.
My knowledge of content quantity is mostly limited to SKZ (I only stan one group; stanning can take a lot of energy) and their tendency to release some form of new content with no more than a 48-hour gap _constantly._ But many groups (SKZ, Ateez, BTS, and afaik the majority of others, at least gen 3 and gen 4) have one or more "reality shows" (which, thankfully, are in no way the same thing as western reality shows) or variety shows, as well frequent live interaction broadcasts, text subscriptions with fans, random informal behind-the-scenes releases, and more. Like, just this week alone, I think we've had...I dunno, maybe ten or so new pieces of content from Stray Kids. Vlogs, lives, trailer clips, etc -- and that doesn't count the possibly hundreds of Bubble (the subscription text app) messages and the socmed posts. It's an _enormous_ amount of content, and the result is fans generally feeling far more invested in and familiar with the idols than they are with western artists.

Hi R M! Yes, I found out pretty quickly about Kpop as an industry rather than a particular defined "genre"! I think once I get into the later generations of Kpop, the overall picture will be clearer. Regarding fans/fanwars -- I knew going into this that the Kpop industry was huge, with tons of fans across the board, but I'm honestly surprised at the level of fandom that permeates the culture, not just in Korea but overseas and even here in the US.
I'm sure that all of the groups/idols are super busy and it's amazing that some still have the time to interact with fans like that. My channel just started, and despite its small size, it's still a ton of work!
Anyways, thanks so much for your detailed comment. I'm glad to see the genuine passion that you and others have, and I'm excited to continue the journey with you guys! :)

@@xynxreacts Hi I just want to add that if you get into 3rd gen and 4 gen groups you need to know that some have content that has a story line or “Universe”. Usually the title tracks (but not always” of an album are part of the storyline. I stand a few Hybe (Big Hit) groups and the Universe for groups like BTS, TXT, & Enhypen can be deep in meaning and contusing if you start in the middle of their playlist. The songs can stand on their own with awesome MV’s but newcomers can get confused about what is going on as a group's content builds the Universe in a linear way. Just know that if you want to go deeper into content or storyline there are youtube reactors who do “Theory” explanations of a group's storyline. Also I have been a Kpop fan for years and at 67 so I am an example of how diverse some fandoms can be

So, since this seems to have been made a little earlier when the generational line between the third and fourth generations was much blurrier, I’d like to clarify them. The 3rd Generation began in 2011 and the 4th Generation began in 2018. Some 3rd Gen groups are BTS, Seventeen, Blackpink, Mamamoo, EXO, Twice, Red Velvet, and GOT7. Some 4th Gen groups are TXT, (G)I-dle, ATEEZ, Stray Kids, Aespa, IVE, Itzy, and ENHYPEN.
Also the training years were a little exaggerated. There are idols that have trained for 10+ years, but there are also some who have trained for half a year. The training period lasts for however long it takes for the company to decide they’re worthy of making a debut.
Regarding kpop I like, my personal favorite group is Dreamcatcher. They’re known for their rock fusion songs. Some songs by them are:
    Boca (moombahton+rock)
Piri (pop rock with metal influences)
    Scream (psytrance+rock)
    Deja Vu (symphonic rock)
I have an arsenal of rock and rock-flavored kpop songs because I like to keep them tabbed, so I can relay more suggestions if you want. There’s actually been a surge of pop rock and pop punk songs in the kpop industry this year.

This isn't that old, the information just isn't that accurate. By the second year of 4th Gen, it was widely accepted that 4th Gen had begun and was started around Stray Kids debut (some say The Boys but they weren't popular enough to mark a time period by). Stan is also not a Kpop fandom specific term, not to mention they missed just a ton of general kpop info even for how fast they went 😅
They just needed a better guide overall.

    @aerynkelly Před rokem +84

In k-pop, there's a lot more emphasis put on the relationship between the artists (idols) and the fans, so even if you're just interested in the music you're going to end up needing to know a bit about the fandoms in general for your journey.
    Key points:
    - every group has a name for their fandom, often a colour, and (at least for newer generations) a Lightstick fans use at shows/concerts
    - members in groups often have a defined role. This was very prevalent in early gen but has started to get a bit more "everyone can do every role" in the newer gen groups. The roles typically are singers, rappers, dancers, and visuals (the ones that attract viewer attention)
    - there is almost always a choreography for the title track song. This choreography can be seen (all or in part) in the mv, and is used for all live performances of the song. Because of this, there's also often a dance practice video where you can see the choreography better
    - older videos are unlikely to have English captions, but many newer ones will, so you can tell what the song is about
    - some groups have a storyline that traverses their title tracks, and others just do whatever fits the theme of that particular song. Groups can have a different style/concept for each title track, but there's typically an overarching sound that is "theirs"

@@xynxreacts honestly I’m not sure. I always kind of had this mind block that K-pop wasn’t something I’d like, but then reminded myself that I love music from other countries (Rammstein, The Hu, Sabaton, and Avatar… I’m big into metal, but like almost anything), so I decided to start with BTS since I knew of them. I listened to Fire, Dynamite, and Black Swan and I was hooked. I will say, I like Stray Kids more because their music hits harder for me and isn’t as poppy. They have 8 members. 3 sub units… 3racha rappers, song writers and producers - Bang Chan (CB97), Changbin (SpearB), and Han (J.One). Danceracha (Felix, Hyunjin, and Lee Know… These guys also rap periodically) and Vocalracha (I.N. And Seungmin). They write, compose, and produce their own music, and they do their own choreography for the most part. Also, Bang Chan the leader was in training for 7 years and they let him handpick the other members, which is incredibly rare and may have been a first in K-pop (not 100%). If you want to try stray kids, I recommend Gods Menu, Back Door, Thunderous and Maniac they are rap heavy. Mixtape Oh, Scars, and Slump are slower more ballad-esque. If you listen to those last three I’d watch the Japanese first take videos it gives you a good idea of what they’re made of. Sorry for overloading with info. I’m super excited for you!

Their title tracks tend to be hard hitting but their B-sides cover a wide range of genres and can be equally hard, or crazy beautiful and soft, and everything in between.
TO BE CLEAR, many, many groups and artists have amazing B-sides that don’t get enough appreciation and recognition! I’m not as familiar with the entire discography of other groups, so these are just my suggestions from the group I stan.
For a fun contrast of Monsta X’s title tracks with some of their B-sides, I’d recommend:
TRESPASS (their debut title track) with HONESTLY (B-side from the same album)
RUSH (title track) - or - HERO (which was in the video you reacted to) with the B-side BROKEN HEART
SHOOT OUT (title track) with I DO LOVE U - or - BY MY SIDE
FOLLOW (title track) with FIND YOU - or - U R
GAMBLER (title track) with SECRETS (there are a couple “Secrets” tracks from different albums, so compare the Secrets from the same album as Gambler, “One of a Kind”)
LOVE (most recent title track) with AND (in particular) -- or -- WILDFIRE (or just listen to the whole "Shape of Love" album, lol)
Monsta X also has two full-English albums, "All About Luv" and "The Dreaming"

If I'm not mistaken, the term "Stan" came about after Eminem's song called Stan. It was basically about an obsessive fan called Stan and the term was used as an insult in the beginning. If someone called you a stan, you were an over the top fan. Today its in a much nicer light, just describing you as a big fan of an artist

I'm not sure if you're still taking suggestions, but if you are, you NEED to check out Ateez. No one ever regrets getting into Ateez. They have a very distinct sound that they have crafted and perfected, so much so that when people hear their songs, they describe it as "very Ateez". They have their own genre really! They created a whole new standard when it comes to performance. They are always creating experimental sounds in their songs and most of them are compared to anthems. But, they have some of the BEST vocals in the 4th gen (by the way, Ateez is 4th generation). Their discography is often referred to as "non-skip" because every song is so good, and almost all of the genres shown here are somewhere in Ateez's discography, plus so many more! (RnB, ballad, feel-good, latin, trap, pop, etc.) Their recent comeback with title track Guerrilla (psychedelic rock) charted #3 on Billboard under Beyonce and Bad Bunny and they had a world tour in January with sold out shows all over America and Europe! (they're having another in a couple of months)
Ateez are monster performers and are known as some of the best dancers and performers not only in the 4th gen but the Kpop industry. It's always what professionals and other idols say about them. A reporter even said that when Ateez perform at music shows, other idols always come out of their waiting rooms just to watch them because they are thought very highly of for their performance skills among idols! And a music critic and dr in ethnomusicology said "they are one of the most passionate and powerful performers in Kpop".
Some song suggestions to start with
    More powerful/anthem-like/hype songs
    -Guerrilla
    -Wonderland (an Ateez classic)
    -Hala Hala
    -Fireworks
    -Thanxx
    -Rocky
some other FANTASTIC songs to check out as well
    -Deja Vu
    -Don't Stop
    -The Real
    -Inception
-Answer (this is the song from the guide)
(all the songs above are various different genres, so I'm sure you'll find something you like!)
I'm sorry this was long but I really hope you give Ateez a chance in your journey into Kpop!

I listen many music, I grow up with progressive rock from 70s and metal. I also listen classical music and I play the piano. What can I say? Kpop is one of the best "genrs" if you wanna hear something new. Is much better in terms of compositions and ideas than western pop (not all songs ofc!). It's cultural. Hi, I really like your vibe so I hope you will dive into kpop more in the future.
One thing I would add to the info is that many members of a group also release solo songs/albums.
My fav groups/solo artists are Stray Kids, BTS, Ateez, The Rose, Jackson Wang etc.
Many of the kpop artists make songs of many genres. For example Stray Kids are known as group with loud sounds, heavy beats and amazing raps but if you dive more into their discography and will listen to their b-side tracks (tracks beside title tracks), you will find ballads and many beautiful vocal songs.
Since you said you like pop rock, I suggest you to listen to The Rose, Woosung (main vocalist of The Rose, also a soloist) & Day6.
For ballads, I suggest BTOB songs. They are older group and have some amazing vocals and harmonies.

Hi, welcome to k-pop. I want to say that all of the k-pop groups or idols are very talented and amazing. We don't compare idols or groups in k-pop they all have their own unique color and flavor. I started my k-pop journey about 3 1/2 years ago and my first love of k-pop group is Stray Kids a 4th generation male group. What I love about this intro guide to k-pop is they showcased a lot of groups that are not as popular. But they guide didn't really give you all the ins and outs of k-pop but it did get your started. There is also a term used often in k-pop that it didn't mention and that is debut, Comeback and concepts. All groups or idols have a day where they finally have meet all the companies requirements of training and the company has picked a date where they group or idol debuts. This is called their debut date. Most all groups usually after they debut sometimes before will have a fandom name. After the group has debut and then later releases a single song or mini or full album that is called a comeback. They can have a comeback any number of times within a year or they could just have it once a year. Most all k-pop groups has a concept or theme for each album. There was 3 major Korean entertainment companies that started the k-pop industry they are referred to as the big 3 this consist of SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment. But don't let this fool you. their are many smaller entertainment groups and other larger entertainment groups that are just as impactful Big Hit Entertainment being one of them that is the company that BTS is under which is the #1 most popular and biggest fandom in the industry. You will see YG and JYP entertainment interactions here and there. Not so much currently but older when the CEO's use to have their trainings battle during pre debut days. There is so much music and groups you may get overwhelmed in the beginning. When i first got into k-pop it took me about 8 months before I would move on to any other groups besides Stray Kids. I recommend starting out with only a few groups and get to know them not just their songs but their names and personalities. with k-pop you not only get music and dance but you get so much more content to feeling like you are part of the groups or idols family. k-pop gives you a more personal interactions to these groups. Sad to say i do see a change where they are popping out these groups so much and it isn't as much about the talent and more about the visuals these kids have. But we wont go down that rabbit hole yet. Here is the top 10 most current popular groups based on my views and no disrespect for any groups not listed. I love them all. I know more about the male groups and idols so their list maybe longer.
    1. BTS 3rd gen, 7 members, debut 2013, under Big Hit
    2. Black Pink, 4 members, debut 2016 under YG
    3. Stray kids 4th gen, 8 members, debut 2018, under JYP
    4. Big Bang, 2nd gen, 5 members (currently 3 members), under YG
    5. TXT 4th gen debut 2019, 5 members under, under Big Hit
    6. Ateez, 4th gen debut 2018, 8 members, under KQ
    7. Enhyphen - 4th gen, debut 2020, 7 members, under Big Hit
    8. Treasure - 4th gen, debut 2020, 12 members, under YG
    9. Twice 3rd gen, debut 2015, 9 members, under JYP
    10. Itzy 4th gen, debut 2019, 5 members, under JYP
Note: I didn't list NCT because they are so different. They have 24 members and broke up into units with rotating members and they are from SM entertainment. The have biggest number member group in the industry. The group KARD is also the only co-ed group with 4 members, 2 male and 2 females. debut in 2017 and under DSP Media. They have a latin vibe in a lot of their music.
the above list is just a very small dot of groups and most are the current thing or iconic like Big Bang who has the leader G-Dragon that has been in the industry since he was 6 yrs old and trained for 7 years starting at the age of 13. There is not an Asian living in the Asian countries who doesn't know who G-Dragon is. I would say the same for BTS and BlackPink. What sets Big Bang, BTS and Stray Kids apart from most of the groups is they usually have more control over their music and write, compose a lot of their own music. I know more about stray kids is they write, compose, arrange, and produce 99.9% of their own music and another thing that sets Stray Kids apart is they are the ONLY group that the leader hand picked his members before they were on a reality elimination show. Most of the time the company picks their top trainees from all around the world they they put them on a reality elimination show and depending on how many members they are looking for they weed them out through various trails till they have the desired members. With Stray kids it was the opposite. This brings me to the next topic. The group members or idols are not all from Korea but they all are Asian decent or percentage of Asian descents. The companies have recruiting scouts that go all over the world and hold auditions. Those that pass go to Korea. Stray Kids has 2 members from Australia. One born there and one that moved there when he was a baby. This goes for other groups as well. Some maybe from USA, China, Japanese, Australia and so on. Sorry for the long message and late too. I wished I had this info when I was getting into k-pop. Here are a few of my favorite groups you know I am going to say please react to Stray Kids Gods menu m/v. Stray Kids has the best transactions and m/v and they don't just give their fans a title track m/v they also put out m/vs for their b-side songs. There fandom name is Stay (not a typo. you take Stray remove the R which is the reason stray kids stay their fans). Back Door m/v Venom m/v, will get you started, then Kard Ring the Alarm m/v, Ateez - Pirate King m/v (debut song) and Guerilla m/v, Woodz (solo idol) Feel Like m/v and Love Me Harder m/v, BTS - Danger m/v, On m/v, Mic Drop m/v and Black Swan m/v, Xidinary Heros (JYP) boy band group plays instruments with Strayberry Cake m/v and Test me, OneWe with Rain to Be m/v and A book in emory, There is so much i wish i could list them all. Monsta X, iKon, OmegaX, Pentagon, TxT, on and on and on. and that is not even the female side or the solo idols like Kang Daniel, Taemin, Gaho, Bang Yongguk, Lay, Jay Park, Zicco, or those groups that are not active but still have iconic songs or members

Hi LorrieE, thanks for the warm welcome and great comment!! Was there a specific moment or event that started you on your own K-Pop journey? You're right -- there was so much content out there that I was getting pretty overwhelmed as you can kind of see in this video! I think since I started reacting to 1st Gen songs first, it laid a good foundation without yet diving headfirst into the later groups! I think I've heard about some of the non-Korean members, though it's interesting to hear that it's not that rare! Do they all sing in Korean too? Anyways, quite a few of the groups and songs that you recommended are on my list to check out! It might take a while to get there, but it's gonna be a fun ride!

@@xynxreacts from what I've seen, most kpop singers do sing in Korean along with English in the songs, but it is not uncommon to see Chinese idols or Japanese idols, for example, to sing in their first languages. There is also the case like in the group KARD where the group is catering to Spanish speaking audiences and therefore incorporate Spanish into their songs. Basically all languages can be used, but Korean is typically the primary. If anyone has more knowledge on the topic feel free to add it, I am no professional nor do I have extensive knowledge on the language use topic; I'm going based off of what I've seen over the years.

I'm not a huge fan of the songs they showed tbh, to me it doesn't represent kpop the best and we can clearly tell what kind of kpop music they are more into. Especially the classification of genre thing they could've chose better things to represent because we all know wannabe by itzy is the poppiest song to ever exist and they put it in rap, i was so surprised. Just cuz of that talk part. I've never heard anyone call that song "rap".
The groups i would recommend the most are BTS, MAMAMOO, (g)idle and dreamcatcher. To me these 4 groups have the best musicality in kpop, versatility, great production and can all step away from the typical kpop formulas you hear a lot that might get repetitive. Especially in terms of albums and discography, it's not just the commercial tracks, the effort is more put into the overall album sounds than anything else.
Tho the songs in the video are different, after a while it kind of .. all sounds the same ? We can tell there's a common pattern.
Edit : also with groups, i forgot one of my favorites, NEW JEANS. They are still rookies and debuted recently and only have like 4 songs but they are all HITS.

It’s actually over 30 years, not 15, but one starting point if you decide to go chronologically might be Seo Taiji (and Boys) who really set off a shockwave in the early 90s which is still evident in k-pop today… particularly in the work of current groups like BTS (who collaborated with him in his 25th anniversary concert in 2017).
That video seemed very skewed toward the creator’s personal interests. I may have missed it but I don’t think there was any mention of Blackpink, who are hugely successful, and they skipped lightly over BTS, by far the most prominent artists to emerge from k-pop onto the world stage. Having said that, there were some really good groups in there, like EXO, NCT(various), MonstaX, BigBang, Got7, Day6, Stray Kids. I’m not so taken with the older girl groups, the newer ones seem more musically interesting to me.

personally I would recommend my favorites MONSTA X :) I would watch live stages because they are very great performers.
the are very diverse, challenge themselves producing, writing and composing songs on the album aswell as title songs :)
joohoney allrounder of the group is a credited writer on the majority of their discography. He already had 149 credits in writing and producing and through the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA). Actually monsta x has 3 members as producers main rapper joohoney, Rapper I.M and singer Hyungwon.
songs to check out are :
title songs: gambler, love, jealousy, shoot out, beautiful, dramarama
b-sides: nobody else, wildfire, secrets Korean version, underwater, mohae, and, from zero, destroyer, stuck, white love
collabs: magnetic feat Sebastian Yatra, who do you love feat French Montana, beside u feat Pitbull
English songs: the dreaming, she's the one, got my number, happy without me, one day, whispers in the dark, blame me, about last night
    Solos...
Monsta x is a seven year old group so this is just a brief insight lol 🤣
other groups or solo artists: WONHO, Gaho, Victon, Ateez, B.I, EXO, TEAMIN, The Rose, Pentagon, DPR, WOOSUNG, ONF, Seventeen, ONEWE, Eric Nam, Hwa Sa, Mamamoo, Lucy, Dreamcatcher ........

Bands (that play their own instruments) in kpop are really underrated, but I love them to death, so here we go:
Day6: I need someone, Love Me or Leave Me, Sweet Chaos, Zombie
    The Rose: RED, Strangers, sorry
N.Flying: Hot Potato, Rooftop, Oh really., Starlight
    Onewe: End of Spring, AuRoRa
    LUCY: Flare, Flowering, Play
Xdinary Heroes: Strawberry Cake, Sucker Punch, Knock Down
(these six are my faves and some of the biggest right now, I guess. They have a lot of rockish sounds, but none of them stick to one genre in particular, so its hard to say.)
And then here are some of my personal favorite groups. I really enjoy finding new music, so some of these might not be as popular, but Id love it if you gave them a chance.
Purple Kiss - Ponzona (Love Is Dead, So WHY)
Stray Kids - Easy (Any, Victory Song, Double Knot)
Seventeen - Fallin Flower (Light A Flame, Cheers)
NCT U - Without You (I like the chinese version better, but both are good)
NCT 127 - Chain (Kick It, Cherry Bomb)
Monsta X - Someones Someone (Love Killa, LOVE)
    BI - BTBT
    WJSN THE BLACK - Easy
CIX - Jungle (one of my all time favorite songs)
    iKON - Bling Bling
P1Harmony - Doom Du Doom (Thats Money, Butterfly)
    ACE - Changer, Goblin
    aespa - Illusion
Dreamcatcher - Odd Eye, Silent Night
Pentagon - Daisy (also one of my favorites of all time)
    VICTON - nostalgic night
    OnlyOneOf - sage
    Baekhyun - UN Village
I tried putting a lot of different sounds in here, because personally, my playlist is very messy. I dont know if youll like them all.
Also, not all of these have music videos. Some are B-Sides... There are really good videos with lyrics on youtube, so just react to that if you want. I chose to put them still, because I often end up prefering the B-Side over the Title Track < here you see how some of that kpop vocab is being used ;)

My advice would be to go back through the songs on the video and pick out 2-3 that you enjoyed, and then check out other songs from those groups. If you find yourself wanting to know more about a group, there's generally a lot of fan created content from intro guides to funny compilations (groups are also very active through variety programs and lives). But honestly, feel free to pick a random group and then ask questions as you go, fans will know the content to direct you towards :)

I think a lot of the creators "personal picks" are songs that are a little harder to fit into a single category.
You'll have to sample several songs from each group (not necessarily in a row) to figure out their sound because most groups don't stick closely to one style/concept.

The interesting thing with Kpop is not only the different styles but the fact that most artists cover multiple styles. You can hear rap, edm and a ballad all from the same artist. I am a multi fan - someone who heavily supports multiple groups. I get hooked by the music more than a specific group, though I do have my favourite artists that I have supported since their debut. As for recommendations it really depends on where you want to go - obviously BTS - being the biggest group in the world - has an amazing discography covering the past 9 years, but there are some amazing artists out there - Oneus, Onewe, Ateez, NFlying FTIsland, Stray Kids, TXT - the list is literally endless! I will be interested to see where you head from here.

There is a tremendous amount of talent in KPop and you don't have to love it all to appreciate it.I am newto the world, but now that I am here, I am kicking myself for not giving it a chance sooner. For me, I appreciate music that has a good vibe. Bands like Shinee and Stray Kids are who drew me in. I appreciate so many others, but Stray Kids is the real deal when it comes to having a sound I appreciate. Self produced with multi talented members, I took a musical journey in their discography. After being dragged to a concert, I was hooked.
Go to MVs to watch: God's Menu, Thunderous, Maniac, Venom, Back Door, Red Lights. Do others, but these tend to be the most viewes.

Their label wasn’t as strict with the idol training program and encouraged them to be themselves. I think people find them to be authentic. I find their lyrics to be multi dimensional, and prefer the Korean songs to the handful of English songs which were written to be feel good songs during the pandemic. Have fun.

Hiii, welcome to the kpop hole..
Depending on what you like, you have music for all tastes.
Probably the most famous groups nowadays are:
    Blackpink
    Bts
But to tell you the truth, there are many groups that deserve the same recognition.
Groups of several generations, type Stray kids, twice, mamamoo, aespa, everglow, ateez, Exo, IVE, Girls Generation, Got7, day6, the rose and much more (I could make a list that never ends such is not the talent that exists in the kpop industry)
And you also have solo artists such as IU, Jessi, Bibi, Chungha, Sunmi, Jean Somi, Alexa, August D, Jay Park, Code Kunst, Bobby, Zico, Jackson Wang and much more..
To the point that I'm listing some and I'll go after adding others who saw me remembering as I write..
The talent is very but very same, to the point that my Playlist has become 70% kpop artists and the rest of songs from other countries, honestly kpop opened my eyes to other types of music that I did not listen to, because we only consume what happens on the radio, or what the media goes through, is this makes us not hear much, because there is talent all over the place, for example I this week, I discovered a band called Band-maid and I was completely in love..
I hope I helped, and have fun.

One of my favorite things about K-Pop is their complete disregard for genre. It really allows the songwriters to be creative. It’s not uncommon for a song to span like three or four genres. Plus every comeback is a whole production - the music, chore and videos all work together as a cohesive artistic effort and I think that’s neat.

Hope you chek out BoA! She is dubbed as the queen of Kpop. One of the most influential solo acts in Korean music history. She debuted in 2000 so she's considered generation 1.5 -> end of generation 1 and the start of generation 2. She started it all.
A little info about BoA if you're interested:
BoA debuted as a solo singer in 2000 at the age of 13 (youngest idol ever to debut) under SM Entertainment.
By the age of 15 BoA made history as a first non-Japanese to top the Oricon chart (biggest music chart in Japan). As well as the first Korean artist to sell over million copies of an album in Japan (only 2 years after her debut), and the 1st foreigner two have 2 albums in a row selling over a million copies in Japan. She opened the door for Korean music to Japan's market and became the bridge to connect the two countries for the first time after the World War 2. Ayumi (queen of J-pop) and BoA are the ONLY two artists two have 6 consecutive albums topping the Oricon chart. Her success in Japan not only saved her company from bankruptcy, it made her company SM Entertainment one of the big three (most powerful ent. companies), it opened the doors for K-pop to enter Japanese market (2nd biggest music market in the world). She did that in a time when social media wasn't a thing.
She is the 1st Korean superstar.
She has 10 Korean albums, 11 Japanese albums, 2 Korean mini albums and 1 English album (her American debut). She also writes, produces and composes. There are rumors she will have a comeback by the end of this year.
She was a judge on K-pop star (season 1 and 2), coach on The Voice of Korea (2020), MC on Produce 101 (season 2), judge on Street woman fighter and will be the judge on upcoming Street man fighter.
She is an actress as well starring in films like Big Match (Korean action movie) and Make your move (American-Korean dance movie).
She speaks Korean and Japanese fluently, also English, and if I'm not mistaken she speaks conversational Chinese ss well.
The founder of SM Entertainment, Lee Soo Man said:
''If BoA wasn't here, there would be no SM. Also I wouldn’t be a producer. Like a father and producer, it is like a dream to have met your daughter.”
I hope you react to more of BoA.
New Kpop fans have no clue who she is, and most of their biases probably wouldn't be where they are now if there weren't for BoA. Her influence and her impact on the industry is unmeasurable. 😊

But there is a reason BTS are at the top. They cover all these genres and more but there are some things that really set them apart.
First their underdog back story and how they were really a grassroots project and were and are made famous by the love of their fans.
Next is their lyrics. They are just unmatched by any other group either western or Korean. Yes they have some light hearted tracks but many are deep and layered and can be applied to many of your own life situations.
Finally their work ethic. NO ONE works harder than BTS and you will see this when you look at the sheer amount of content they produce. And on top of that you have all members contributing to writing and producing too.

I didn't see anyone mention this but the term Stan comes from Eminem's song titled "Stan" it's about a man named Stan whose obsessed with Eminem. Stan is not supposed to be a good thing, but the word has lost it's original meaning as a lot of people just use it to express that they are very interested in a group or person.
Also, my favorite groups are Twice (very versatile music), SF9 (cool sexy vibe opposite from the aggressiveness of a lot of other boy groups), and Kingdom (concept kings, they have such an interesting storyline and have a lot of things coming including a webcomic). Here are some songs I recommend from them:
Twice: TT, Fancy, Feel Special, Alcohol Free, Talk That Talk, What is Love?, and Doughnut (Japanese track)
SF9: Teardrop, Trauma, Now or Never, Stop It Now (B-side), O Sole Mio, Mamma Mia, Believer (B-side), and Good Guy
Kingdom: Excalibur, Karma, Black Crown, Ascension, Promise (this is the order that the story goes), their new comeback is in Oct
Other songs: Replay - Shinee, Loco - Itzy, Maniac - Stray Kids, Don't Call Me - Shinee, Move - Taemin, Black Mirror - Oneus, You Calling My Name - Got7, Tomboy - (G)-IDLE, After Like - IVE, Love Scenario - iKon, Bang Bang Bang - Big Bang, Into The New World - Girl's Generation

Hello! Welcome into Kpop world, it's gonna be one hell of a journey haha
My personal recommendation is EXO (the first group you said you liked the dance quite in the beginning) and all their subunits and member solos. They are on eof the most known group in Korea as well in China (they are HUGE there) and Japan, not only bc of their music career but also for some of the members' acting career.. EXO-CBX, EXO-SC, Kai, Lay, Baekhyun, Suho, Chen, D.O. and Xiumin are the 7/9 members that have solos. Whatever comes up with their name is going to be good. Also, I would recommend EXO "Love Me Right" and "Tempo". These are the only two I feel like recommending for now as they are more pop/funky and I'm not really sure about what you like. They have great ballads as well and they are top tier vocalists. Exo not only sings, they are great dancers, some are actors as well, luxury brand ambassadors, producers, models and for this reason they are currently the richest kpop group around. Their music style is quite various but each song has unicity that screams their name. They also hold the Guinness World Record for fastes sold out tour, beating their previous record of 0.4 seconds, by selling out 5 dates in 0.2 seconds.
I fell in love with them 8 years ago (they've been around for 10y) and they are the only group I stan and forever will. I'm sure you won't regret diving into them.

Thanks Jaxxen! I took a look at TVXQ's music, though their early stuff! Haven't got to the other groups yet, but super excited to get to Day6!

"Stan" actually comes from the Eminem song of the same name, adopted to represent the absolute devotion of kpop fans, while overlooking the outright harmful obsessive nature of the original Stan. That type of crazy-obsessed entitled boundary-violating fan depicted in Eninem's MV is known in Korea as a _saesang._

That video really challenged people who know kpop to not sing along and then proceeded to play me a ton of my favorite jams how rude 🤣 ALSO
in the EDM part the first group shown was A.C.E and if you decide to look into groups more I highly recommend them they are super talented and the have the edm vibes but also a lot of other styles and their cover videos are IMMACULATE

I honestly only found out about kpop is about 7 months ago and a Kpop groups mv (BTS) on my CZcams recommendations and I started listening to it and I was like this sounds good but sense I already watched k-dramas so I already knew things about Kpop but didn’t look into it but I’m still learning new things about Kpop even after 7 months

Hey Julie! I've noticed that there is tons and tons (and tons!) of content out there, that I'm not surprised that there are still new things for you to discover after 7 months! This is gonna be fun... :)

the word stan comes from eminem’s song Stan in which an obsessed fan goes to extreme lengths to get eminem’s attention. honestly a lot of fans use the term without actually knowing where it comes from bc it’s not a good term 😪

deff react to stray kids they are my ult group they debuted in 2018 so they are on the newer side
I was reading some other comments that recommend stray kids they didn't really give songs recs so here you go
Gods menu( most well known song how many people found them )
    thunderous
    maniac
    Venom
charmer(doesn't have a mv but a great song)
    freeze
    cheese
    Domino
    back door
    miroh
    hellevator
    district 9 (debut)
they have so many more songs those are they only ones i could think of off the top of my head but they also have a lot of dance practices if you want to see some of the choreographs they originally had 9 member but one left to pursue his solo career so you see him an earlier music videos and dance practices
hope you react I will follow your journey and watch all the groups you react to hope you enjoy your time here 😊

I recommend BTOB but they were not listed here. They are underrated but have really great vocals. Literally every member can sing. Some of my personal favs are Missing you, Thriller, Wow, Movie, It's okay, I'll be you man, Insane, Show your love, Outsider, Beautiful pain, The Song, Father, Only one for me, Blue moon, When it rains and Stand by me. Also, you can try their B-side tracks as well. There is a whole playlist in CZcams. Hope you enjoy them.

I felt like this video was pretty heavily biased, so I hope you check out other videos too! I am a BTS ARMY and there's tons of amazing songs by them that could have been used 💜 If you have a genre you gravitate to most I would love to give you recommendations! I did appreciate seeing woosung in the video though 🤭
    First recommendations (for BTS) are
    ON - kinetic manifesto film
    Black Swan
    Film Out (Japanese)
    Airplane pt 2. (Japanese)
    Mic-Drop (Steve Aoki remix)

The term "Stan" is actually a western term that came from Eminem's 2000 song "Stan". Which is a song about an overly obsessed fan. And added to Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2017.
