Uh, not really(idk how to start this) but in kpop, the total number of their fandom was what makes their songs popular. You can actually see many groups out there with a lot of bangers but they don't have that many fans (due to unpopular company and lack of promotion). So the views aren't actually doing us justice. I literally feel bad about other unknown groups.

I think the slight problem with this chart is that it's not exactly accurate to the times? For example BTS would not chart until about 2016 and all the previous installments are because they blew up later.. so this is not necessarily songs that were huge at the time but more like songs that have accumulated views up to now. For the same reason a lot of groups seemingly disappeared out of nowhere when they are still active to this day and were huge even in those years!

@@melody3629 agreed, a huuuge difference between what it really was in the korean charts vs how it is now. plus, music videos don't always translate to how they do in the charts either. bigbang released still life and got over 100 real time all-kills but if you're going by the mv then the differences could be huge. i love bts, but they didn't chart over quite a few other groups when they debuted, their mvs just blew up when they did. we also may have seen groups like infinite or highlight, probably more of ikon, maybe jyj. it's hard to say now without going back and looking at the charts themselves.

EXO is in hiatus since 2019 due to mandatory military enlistment. (2 members were done, 3 are currently inside and 2 are to be enlist this year). Their album Don’t fight the feeling in 2021 was just a thank you gift for the fans thats been waiting for them. EXO were never promoted in western countries. Btw to explain this is not an accurate list. The views that are listed here are acquired from recently. It’s basically the most viewed music videos of those years from this current year. That might seem confusing, but to explain this list is more like a reflection of the CURRENT popular groups. For example, it took a while for BTS to blow up, so if the music videos’s views were taken from the actual years, then they wouldn’t appear on top 5 until somewhere 2016-above. After they got popular, their fans naturally checked out their older stuff which greatly increased the views. Keep this in mind for the girl group’s lists as well. Thank youu

The reason that you see a lot more variance in styles from Big Bang compared with other groups at the time involves creative control. Big Bang was the first group to have almost total creative control over their own output. Up until that point, everything was up to the respective group's management companies. Big Bang was the first group that wrote and composed almost all of their own songs, came up with their own promotion concepts, and everything else. They were the ones who popularized EDM styles in Kpop among other things.

  • @skadiyoko
    @skadiyoko Před 2 lety +12

BTS absolutely CAN and DO create wholesome music, but they definitely talk about A LOT of different topics with their music. Their debut, No More Dream, was about ignoring all the people who say you have to give up on your dreams (like pursuing music), and instead work to get a "safe" job (like becoming a lawyer or something). Their next title track, N.O. criticized the strict Korean education system, asking why adults are making children step on each other's backs to be the "best". Spring Day is one of the most emotional songs you'll come across, about missing someone (why you miss them is up to your own interpretation, but the song was inspired by a tragedy that happened in Korea). Blood, Sweat, and Tears is about an extremely toxic relationship, and you KNOW the relationship is toxic, but you're addicted and can't bring yourself to leave it. Their Love Yourself series spans across 3 parts, starting with a relationship that felt like destiny, that was perfect, where the people loved each other very much, turned into the "protagonist" realizing they started changing theirself for this other person, and they couldn't recognize who they were anymore because they put their real self away to be someone fake for the person they loved, and this lead to the relationship ending, and the final part of the series is the protagonist recovering, and learning they needed to start learning hoe to love themselves. Life Goes On is from their album at the end of 2020, which was about the pandemic, and it was a song about holding onto hope, and that the future would be brighter than the present.
so... tl;dr (lol), but BTS don't limit themselves to one genre or topic and their discography is VAST and so, so good. Their lyricism is top tier, and they've always had a hand in writing/producing their own music, so it's very genuine. That's what they became so popular, because they are extremely talented, yes but what they sing about SPEAKS to people, and you just feel really connected to them because of it ☺

  • @ashurasama

Actually a lot of those older groups are still around. SS501 and Nu'est are the only ones that officially disbanded (and for Nu'est it's VERY recent). But there are MANY kpop groups that debut each year, so longevity is kind of an exception, only the most successful ones actually make it past the end of their first contract (which by Korean law, can last a maximum of 7 years).
If you start diving into kpop you'll soon hear about "generations", so a quick rundown :
    - 1st generation are those who debuted in the 90s and basically started the industry ; there's only one group left from back then, called Shinwha, but some soloists are still very relevant, notably BoA and Rain.
    - 2nd generation are those who debuted in the 00s until 2011, all the groups at the start of the video are from that generation, and as I said a bunch are still active and release music more or less regularly
    - 3rd generation started with EXO in 2012, and they were actually the most successful kpop boy group for a few years until BTS took over in 2016 (BTS's rise was a very gradual one, but it's still ongoing which is kinda crazy)
    - 4th generation started in 2018-2019 (we're still debating the exact year) so it's the current one

I think most of these views are the views today and not back in that exact year. I say this because BTS was not the most viewed from the start. It took them a while to pop off until I need U came out. I'm not sure if I'm correct or not but if I am, these aren't the most accurate to what was popular back then.

EXO is in fact the longest active group of 3rd gen. Their fanbase is mainly in China (which is kind of a downside for views and stuff because the country have their own social medias) and they are biggest group there, they were never considered getting promoted by their company outside of Asia but still became one of the biggest group outside. They are currently promoting solos while members go to the military one by one. They are originally 12 members but 3 Chinese members left making them 9 but now recently Lay(the remaining Chinese member) reportedly said that he left the company but is not leaving the group(don't know how that works). Their next comeback with the whole members will be on 2025(fuckin long). Their latest comeback "Don't Fight The Feeling" was just a thank you gift for the fanbase that's why their company didn't seriously promote it but still hot 1.3M sales.

A problem with these is that its taking the 2022 view counts for all the songs, so it's kinda misconstruing it a bit. BTS wasn't that big when they first came out in 2013, but fans will go rewatch old videos today. So the view counts of 2022 wouldn't be accurate to how popular they actually were in 2013. I wish it could have the view counts of what it really was back then.

If you liked the RnB sound you should really check out Shinee! They are called the princes of kpop and are pretty much trendsetters when it comes to the industry. They are also looked up to by many many idols who debuted after them and often named when idols say why they wanted to become an artist themselves and they are active and really successful to this day. They are also really really versatile and I think you would enjoy them. My recommendations would be their debut song 'Replay' from 2008 (RnB) and their latest comeback 'Don't Call Me" from 2021 (they go more hard here)! They debuted when they were only between 14 to 18 years old, so even with 14 years in the industry they are still pretty young!
Replay: m.czcams.com/video/VTASffPQGhY/video.html (the year says 2011 and not 2008 because it was re-uploaded)
    Don't Call Me: m.czcams.com/video/p6OoY6xneI0/video.html
Also wanted to add that most of the old groups are still active and actually still doing pretty good. Maybe not in youtube views but they still chart high, sell good and are really popular. Like Shinee, Bigbang, Super Junior and many more. This list might not really represent what was popular during the year a certain MV dropped. It's more like how many views the MV accumulated till 2022 and for example most views for BTS and their earlier releases came in after around 2016. Ofc they are still the most popular which you clearly see in their current views I still wanted to add that part because some groups were really popular during certain years but might not show up in that chart.

  • @MsSaby97

    Hi
K-pop is interesting genre which includes almost every single genre in music, everything combined in a great way, featuring stunning music videos (at least most of the times). That's why it's interesting and refreshing for many people.
But if you want to learn or just to know the history of K-pop don't take those type of videos too seriously. Why? They don't give a proper view. You assumed that most of the groups here are not around anymore, but as you already know, they actually are here and still make great music.
I've discovered k-pop through TVXQ in 2011, and I was shocked by their videos, but the music and their talent has stolen my heart. After that I've discovered many artists, and today I can proudly say - TVXQ and EXO are top tier groups and my ultimate favorites in music, not only k-pop.
Also, just to point out that this bandwagon with views shouldn't be taken too deep. Fandoms stream. And when the fandom is bigger and younger, they have more streams. We, people with family and work don't have time and energy to do it. We just love our favorites and enjoy their music.
I think many people are obsessed with views nowadays. But let be objective. Super Junior for example. (oh, man, I love them). They debuted in 2005 and were very very big. The first K-pop group which targeted the Chinese market and became very successful. And they are till now, but fans who were 20yo in 2005 are more than 30-35yo today. We have families, dutties, kids. You can't expect we to stream 24/7 the newest song, right? However, last week Super Junior has held 3-days event in Japan!!! which was very very successful, you can do some research. They also released a beautiful single album 2 weeks ago and it was in TOP10 saled albums on Korean charts.
Please, excuse my long comment, just wanted to give a different point of view for all these numbers.
Excuse my bad English and I hope you understood me.
    Have a great Sunday!

I find it odd that Seventeen is not on this list considering they were the only group in 2021 to have two number 1 albums. Is one of the top sellers of boy groups and has won several awards that many of these other groups have not won. It kind of makes me sad cause they literally have some of the best songs in Kpop self produce, compose write and choreograph. They also are the best dancers in Kpop with the best synchronization of all the groups. They also are a group that made it past the 7 year mark. Which is when most of these newer groups get disbanded. They also are always ranked high right alongside BTS and EXO. On the social charts and are one of a small handful of groups that is always making content. Whether it be music, variety shows or their own series Going Seventeen. I know everyone has their own opinions and not looking to start fan wars but I think Seventeen is a much better group than some of the ones that made this list.

EXO KINGS AND LEGENDS OF K-POP
FOREVER ETERNA-A FACT THAT HAS NO LONGER NEEDS ANYONE'S APPROVAL. The national men's group of South Korea. They became the first artists in 12 years who managed to sell more than a million copies of the album. XOXO was named "Album of the Year" at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards, making EXO the youngest male group ever to receive this award. They performed at the closing ceremony of the Universiade 2013 in Kazan. They performed at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. They sell out concert tickets in 0.2 seconds, which is a WORLD RECORD TO THIS DAY. They received the first Prime Minister's award at the 2017 Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards for their contribution to Korean culture. They were included in the TOP-50 most popular male groups in the world of the last decade according to "24/7 Wall St" (EXO took the 10th place, becoming the only representative of Asia, indicators in Billboard, Spotify and Wikipedia were taken into account). They were included in the Guinness Book of Records as the group that received the largest number of daesans at the MAMA Award. They are the security ambassadors of Seoul.
    /
To say that in EXO someone is better and someone is worse is simply IMPOSSIBLE because absolutely every participant is unrealistically talented, this is literally an IDEAL GROUP. Every EXO group and solo album is on a completely different level to this day, even after 10 years of career. I am absolutely not afraid to say that EXO is a real K-POP, now there are countless groups in the fourth generation, but they absolutely do not stand out in any way, trying to focus more and more on the West and POP music, thereby becoming monotonous and disposable. EXO is the only band in the entire K-POP industry, by the way, to this day where literally every member sings amazingly, including rappers and dancers. Minute popularity does not determine the talent and legendarity of the artist, because even after 10 years of his career, EXO songs are literally sung by the whole of Asia, because EXO is the real K-POP. I will never stop admiring this amazing band, even if 40 years pass, let a billion more bands like bts be released, they will never surpass EXO because their music is timeless, this is what defines the legendary artist.

I reccommend looking for a video on the different concepts or genres of boygroups (and girlgroups too!). There's some really cool music and unique visuals you're missing out on by only reacting to the most popular ones. The video "the different genres and concepts in kpop" by nakaminhox is an okay one (couldn't find anything I liked perfectly LOL). Also, if you want something different, the band FT Island in this video is a representative of the k-rock genre - other groups include N.Flying, The Rose, DAY6, and the kpop-metal fusion girl group Dreamcatcher.

It’s crazy seeing the numbers for BTS music videos… when you’re looking at the numbers of the ppl in the same category closes to them are like less than half of the views of their videos. It’s nuts but good that other groups are getting exposure more bc of their influence around the world.. it’s so weird how it all worked out. I’m not saying bts is better than everybody and nobody is as good at all bc I actually really enjoy most kpop groups I’ve discovered but it happened bc of bts …. And that’s just how it works with the whole social media explosion…. I love stray kids, enhyphen , txt… that song by treasure is pretty sick but I’m still discovering as well… def keep going and you’ll find some incredible artists

i feel like these views werent necessary just of these times, cos bts wasnt well known until 2015, but it says their songs from 2013 to 14 got high views on this video, its probably becos fans started knowing them n went back to listen to their old songs lot n gave their old vids alot of views years later, otherwise i dont remember bts early songs topping charts the time it released, im sorry guys dont get mad at me, im just stating the facts
