    I'm Taiwanese who's been living in Berlin for 10 years, so I know what it feels like to be the minority. It's spot on that you mentioned how Taiwanese people now get to have real contact with black people and be educated. Most of the stares and the stereotypes come from pure ignorance, and it's great to see more expats/foreigners like you moving to Taiwan and make the island more diverse.
    And glad to hear that your experience is generally positive. Most Taiwanese are genuinely nice and friendly, and are curious about other cultures :)

      Most Taiwanese believe that white is right if she were to be dating a Taiwanese man which is Chinese.. the Chinese Taiwanese family would not accept her if she was a white girl marrying a Chinese woman man she will be accepted.

    Hi, I come from Taiwan and where I live. Welcome to Taiwan ♥ I try to google some key words to know how Africa people feel in Taiwan living. Because I have seen Africa people spoke out how I got bad experience from other countries on internet(i can't believe this is still happening !) and am worrying about will it happen in my country? For me and people around me, we have never made laugh of people just for looking different with us. I am so happy to hear how you love Taiwan.
    I hope the world will be more peaceful and am so sorry for you have met rude person once . I have never been to English native language country so far , my English is pretty basic . So I hope you understand what I said : )

    I was learned English from Mr. King who is a black male from the US here in New Taipei City. He is so funny and always makes our classroom full of laugh. I never curious about his hair cuz he chose to leave no hair on his head😂
    Actually I found more and more black people live in Taiwan. Lots of exchange students and workers came to Taiwan. Some of them decide to stay for long term.
    Also, I believe that lots of people staring at you not because you are black or foreigner but because you are such a gorgeous . I once bumped into a black lady near my house. She is so tall and pretty. It takes me three seconds to notice that I am impolitely staring at her. I was just shocked by her beauty😓

    In my opinion, Taiwan's societies have been embedded with a phenomenon of white privilege while people with darker complexion are not treated as well. With the increasing number of people traveling abroad people tend to become more open-minded. Americans are more favored here because most countries are afraid of China and exclude Taiwan from joining the international societies while USA is the only country who can extend the helping hands.
    Taiwan is still a patriarchal society and keeps a family tree on father side. For instance, I can trace my family back 350 years when my family were in Kinmen. Small wonder they kept asking you which country are you from before your family moved to America.

    Wow! You have an incredible attitude and openness that is going to set you up for success in Taiwan and life. How are you so wise and thoughtful? Sorry, but it's hard to guess Black folks age until the greys start to appear so you look young to me. 😆
    For sure there are racist Taiwanese (mostly against South East Asians and aboriginal Taiwanese, but rapidly improving), but I imagine it's mostly out of ignorance and lack of exposure rather than the kind of hate a POC might experience in the States. I feel that it's a distinction worth making because I 100% cosign what you said about just being someone's good first exposure. I'm sure that the fact my two besties in first grade were Black had a huge impact on me which sets me far apart from my conservative parents who are still rather prejudiced against Black folks.

    Great video... Thanks! I'm a 1.5-generation immigrant: born in Taipei, emigrated to San Diego when I was 10. Before leaving Taiwan in the 1980s, all I knew was that Africans are from Africa, Europeans are from Europe, and Asians are from Asia. Growing up in the U.S. has certainly opened my eyes... especially fortunate in a city (Chula Vista, south San Diego) that's one of the most integrated in the U.S. The "where are you from, I mean, really from?" question I thought only happen Asian Americans... but it makes sense the way you describe it! It got better over the years until I lived in Milwaukee during 2013-2018. The Midwest is just stuck in a time warp! In 2007 a job took me to rural Taiwan for a few months, and I did notice that I'm never the only Asian person in the room anymore... and that being an (American) expat has its privileges. I could blend in if I keep my broken Mandarin/Taiwanese to myself. And when I do reveal my Americanness, that privilege just like switches "on". Interesting observations!

    The reason Taiwanese asks question like "where are you from really?" without thinking it could sound offensive to certain people, has a lot to do with the fact a lot of Taiwanese people have records of where their ancestor originated, as majority of the population in Taiwan migrated from mainland China through out the past few centuries. Many Taiwanese families keep a record of where in China which their ancestors originated before making the trip across the ocean to arrive in Taiwan.

Many blacks people will become very upset if you call them Africa because we come from so many walks of life. You have Jamaicans, African American, Dominican Republic, and of course those of us from Africa. Think about it like someone saying all Asians are from china. Hope this helps and again I love all the positive feed back!!!

    It's good to hear positive outlook and not judging a culture that is different than them. Everybody only has their experiences in life they can go off on no matter what color your skin is. When Chinese people travel abroad they are judged and looked at differently in everybody's mind. Babying Caucasian white European when I travel I looked at different in other cultures as if I was to go to Africa Nigeria China Japan Israel Greece. My experiences in this country's I did not blend in but I am who I am and I am what I am. If your life consists of goodness God and love that is what people most see trade for those that are not in Christ they will not like you because of who you represent. Remember that we live in a spiritual world, and there are spirits that can see Christ in you caring for no reason some people will verbally attack you or just not like you because we're darkness that lives in them. In America I have not experienced any privileged my whole life and I'm 63. So this privileged word that I hear I don't know what it's like to have it. In America when I was a teenager I could not get jobs that I wanted because I did not wear a turban and my skin was too white. As I Grew Older I made a way for myself, I am an entrepreneur and I worked very rarely for somebody else. My whole life I was self-employed and trusted God for the increase. The True Church of Jesus Christ it's not defined by skin color only if you are obedient or disobedient to the word but everybody is love the same. If you call yourself a brother or sister and you are a fornicator or you spread lies and are deceitful you are dealt with and corrected. If you refuse to turn from their Wicked Ways you're asked to leave. Jesus said, no fornicator adulterer murderer or liar has any inheritance in the kingdom of God trade for such that do these things are worthy of death. And that death is the second death. Eternal death. So, I hope that you are in Christ and I think by your words you possibly maybe I haven't heard anything about your faith only by a shark Video in 20 minutes or so well enjoy your travels to the world and realize that God created everyone and everybody has a choice to choose him to be their father through Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that the Lord takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but his will is that every man should turn from their Wicked Ways and turned to him and his son in Christ

    Thanks for sharing. It's kinda mind blowing to me, how in their minds you can't be really American, and the need to probe until they get a satisfactory answer. Many countries around the world are like that, and what blows my mind is if it were pre-internet era, the ignorance would be understandable. But nowadays? I don't see how anyone could be ignorant on such matters even if they actively tried. A small town somewhere in a 3rd world country, ok. But I'm very surprised that Taiwan could be like that. I always thought it was pretty progressive, unlike how their neighbours across the pond could be.
    Anyway, everything in life is relative to something else. There is no absolute standard. So, from your experience, have you noticed any difference in how they behave towards you compared to caucasians a) at face value and b) after it's established that you're from the US?
    Also, racism has a different flavor outside of the US. It's a different type of racism, but it's still racism nonetheless.

      Yes, I felt the same way especially when I first moved here. Now, I try to look at it from another perspective vs. getting upset and wishing things were different. They are mostly curious at face value but seem to get more excited/ surprised once its established I'm from the US.

      @sarahyoungchau4172 Před 3 lety +7

      Unfortunately this happens quite often in the US too :( I can't speak for everyone's experiences, but I have come across a lot of people in the US who insist on finding out where asian americans are "really from" (and keep probing until they get the answer they want to hear). So it's definitely not just a 3rd world country thing

    • @NneniaYasmeen
      @NneniaYasmeen  Před 3 lety +5

      @@sarahyoungchau4172 I think the difference between these two are black Americans often don’t know where their lineage originated due to the slave trades and erasure of our history. • @reginaldhouse7731
      @reginaldhouse7731 Před 3 lety +4

      @@NneniaYasmeen That's not why they want to find out though. There is no deep curiosity for ethnicities and people's migratory pattern. They couldn't care less where you hail from. The reason they probe is because they want to discredit you and in their minds they struggle to put you on the same pedestal as white Americans. So they ask in hopes of putting them out of their misery and just say Africa or something else besides America so they could be like "ah I knew it!" in their heads and move about they day. Sad but true.
