“Sometimes I wake up in the morning and stare at my running shoes 30 minutes thinking man I don’t wanna do this shit!…But then I do it.” David Goggins paraphrased
Overriding limbic friction is the most scientific term I’ve ever heard for describing this feeling.

For the last number of years I’ve used the technique of “talking to my tomorrow self”. I really don’t want to work out today, and I might feel good skipping today. But my “tomorrow self” will be disappointed that I didn’t work out yesterday (today). This has been huge for me and works in any situation. Great clip!

I learned this from addiction. As a nicotine addict i had a weird sense of gratification just from buying snus/cigarettes, anticipating it's usage later. Even though i was losing money and not getting any instant dopamine it felt good to go and buy cigs.
After i quit i have cultivated the same experience in other parts of life. Feeling accomplished from simply waking up early, going to the gym or having a cold shower. Not because any of them have an instant feel good effect, but because i know that the reward is coming. I used to hate stretching, but nowadays i do it every day, mostly because i've grown to like it. Of course these things take a lot of time, but learning to see work not as a struggle, but a meaningful thing in itself is key to improving as a person.

I also have that theory that it's not only about delay gratification, but also that by choosing to do the hard uncomfortable thing, even if the experience is not pleasant in the moment, he feel that deep sense of proudness of being the type of person who choose to do the hard thing when everyone else would've choose to do the easy thing.

Doesn’t matter if you have a reward system or not. It’s either you’re going to do it, or you’re not, that’s what it’s all going to come down to ultimately. There doesn’t have to be a cookie 🍪 or a carrot 🥕 at the end of the tunnel.
Your body does not give 2 💩’s about a sob story about why you can’t put in the work. Your body will just decay and become overweight like everyone else. When you’re dealing with reality, excuses don’t put your body in good health, putting the work in does.
I’m sorry if that comes off as harsh but I’ve been seeing you comment this over and over but I just want to make sure that you know that no one really cares and your body and your physical health really does not care. You’re either gonna out in the work and be healthy or you’re not and be unhealthy.
It sounds like to me that you’re looking for a reward by getting people to say “awwwww” that’s how you’re getting rewards or else you wouldn’t be motivated to tell anyone. So I don’t believe that story about your reward system being blocked….

Goggins along with a lot of U.S. military folks have ADHD. We lack motivational inspiration. So, we use Dedication to compensate. We become regimented in our activities to limit complacency. He gains “motivation” from being around other like minded people. He takes it to the next level though. Inspiration>motivation>implementation>consistency is what bridges the gap to Dedication. People like him and I; and many others skip over inspiration/motivation and go right to implementation and subsequently Dedication.

I'm a big fan of David Goggins, but I have a differing view of the important mechanisms at work. Every decision/choice we make in life is the product of ones dominant or more favourable view of perceived outcomes. David was lucky enough to become quite self aware in his early twenties and realised that his decisions' were not serving his adult self to their best. He made the decision to consciously (top down) battle these self limiting thoughts and decisions. I don't think it was anything to do with the potential dopamine reward, that was purely a secondary benefit. His conscious decision was to "don't listen to don'ts". Although his book, "Never Finished" is an inspiring read, what I did conclude was that David's singular drive not to listen to anything self limiting had resulted in a lack of kindness to himself. He has endured serious physical injury and, instead of listening to what his body was saying, drove on harder, ultimately exacerbating the problem. I've had a very similar journey to David and concluded that, as with most things in life, a level of balance is healthy.

yeah that's my only issue with goggins too. i think the strategy is to adapt his ideas in a way that lets you work on yourself and expand your mind like he did but without ruining the physical body. it's my view that it's actually his ability to control his attention that makes him so great, because he has learnt how to relax into deep suffering, consciously alter his mental narrative and so on. you can learn to do that through regular exercise that is not overly destructive, through daily meditation and constantly attempting to maintain some level of awareness in your daily life. his most powerful tool is awareness and the sooner people learn it can be trained in every moment, with any stimulus whether positive or negative, the better.

If you tell your mind "no" and you do the work despite not "feeling like it" and be consistent with it than you will succeed. For years I was lazy and was always procrastinating at every aspect of my life. Until one day I said "no! I will go against my lazy feelings and desires". That was a life changing moment for me. However I think radical acceptance is a much better alternative that reduces long term suffering.

Don't want to do it? So you do it
3:15 he over-rides limbic friction [ next step after over-riding, you reward yourself]
    Future self
3:50 he knows a win is coming later [ Now I get it. If this is true, if he can sense a reward now, then my bracket above may not be needed]
Bring the future back to the present
4:02 You thread dopamine from the future to now. [Hence David has a fantastic relation with his future self. This could be what Andrew is saying]
    Atomic Habit Step
4:08 by getting out of bed, I am already experiencing a win [wow]
    Feeling of Success
5:20 people have not experienced a win yet [in this field] so it is too hard to override limbic frction.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🧠 Top-down mechanisms in the brain allow humans to override fatigue and lack of motivation.
01:07 🧪 Dopamine, the reward neurotransmitter, increases when we feel close to achieving a goal, not just when we achieve it.
03:36 💪 David Goggins exemplifies the ability to override "limbic friction" by understanding the narrative of overcoming challenges and anticipating future wins.
04:16 🤖 Delayed gratification, resisting immediate desires for long-term rewards, can also trigger dopamine release.
05:55 🌟 Willpower, a form of top-down control, plays a crucial role in pushing oneself beyond comfort zones and contributing to personal growth.
07:18 🔄 Adopting a third-person perspective of oneself can help in overriding limbic friction and taking actions that align with future goals.

He discussed in 3:01 “the more rested you are generally the easier it is to engage top down control.” But in 6:39 he talks about how overriding limbic friction is done through high levels of alertness. So are we meant to be in a rested state or are we meant to be in an alert state to engage top down control and override limbic friction? Or have I misinterpreted this and what he meant to say “get good sleep and be aware to override feelings?”

    • @RespireOfficial
      @RespireOfficial  Před 9 měsíci +2

I don’t see “alert” and “rested” as being at odds with each other. When we are well rested, i.e. when we get good sleep, we are typically more alert during waking hours than if we had slept poorly. Does that make sense?

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:25 🧠 David Goggins appears to use the anticipation of future success to motivate himself. He understands that overcoming friction will lead to a sense of accomplishment, which boosts dopamine levels.
00:53 🧪 Delayed gratification, resisting immediate pleasures, is associated with dopamine release. It's a crucial component of motivation and self-discipline.
01:33 🧐 Overcoming limbic friction, the resistance to taking action, is challenging. Successful individuals perceive the great rewards that will follow, which helps them override this resistance.
02:17 🚀 Pushing beyond limbic friction and expanding one's comfort zone is essential for personal and cultural progress.
03:10 🧪 Enhancing alertness through dopamine and norepinephrine can help override limbic friction. Some people use substances like caffeine or Adderall for this, but psychological techniques can also be effective.
03:38 🧘 Third-personing oneself and anticipating the future state can assist in overriding limbic friction by detaching from the immediate narrative and focusing on the long-term rewards.
04:05 🔄 Reward systems and top-down control can be modulated in real time to motivate action, but it's essential to use these techniques sparingly to avoid exhaustion.

In simple words what Dr. Hubberman is saying is (correct me if I am wrong)
    1. Give up your instant desire and visualise what you are going to achieve if you do what you are supposed to do. For example if I want to be fit then I should exercise everyday, that's the bottom line. But my mind tells me every morning to not get up and enjoy that one hour of sleep. Now to motivate myself I should be visualising the fit version of myself every morning which will be the end result if I exercise regularly.
    2. Secondly I should be strict on myself to discipline myself just like parents behave strictly at times with their kids to discipline them. For example if I have to exercise every morning then I must do it come what may. To motivate ourselves I think we can use cuss words too at times.

Simple Procedure for stress control, motivation, and wellbeing from affective neuroscience.
    In sum:
    1) The suppression of mind wandering (using mindfulness or other resting protocols) induces the decreased activity of the covert musculature or relaxation.
    2) Relaxation elicits endogenous opioid release or is pleasurable.
    3) The continuous experience or expectation of positive and novel moment to moment events (or meaningful behavior) during relaxation increases dopaminergic activity (perceived as a state of arousal) which stimulates increased opioid release, and opioid release will increase or ‘scale’ with the degree of dopamine release that scales in turn with the increased salience of reward. (or opioid-dopamine interactions)
    4) This can be observed in natural environments and manipulated in self-control procedure, as outlined below.
Procedure: Continuous and periodic alternation between a resting protocol (e.g. mindfulness) and the pursuit of meaningful behavior will increase motivation and positive affect (arousal and pleasure), and by making meaningful ideation more emotionally salient, will crowd out thoughts leading to anxiety and depression, with the greater the meaning, the more intense the positive affect.

about anticipating the win, i myself and many of us, crew who trains in the same park for almost decade and a half, can confirm it. also, our bodies developed as well as our mind, so well that most people think we are on steroids with superb genetics. its none of those things, its the decision to train 2+ hours of the same muscle groups till near failure 10-12+ days in a row without a break. its hormesis its breaking metabolites in our bodies that we use for energy, and the very build of new metabolites is severely limited in the future, and we anticipate the dopamin but mostly endorphins that comes after and has lasting effects. its nothing new to us but i wanted to say that its not only possible, its inevitable, if you train like us. or run like David G.

    - Resisting immediate rewards can evoke dopamine anticipation.
    - David Goggins' motivation involves understanding the delayed reward.
    01:18 🤯 *Overriding Limbic Friction*
    - Overriding limbic friction is challenging but rewarding.
    - Limbic friction can be like a powerful voice urging you to stay in your comfort zone.
    - Willpower and top-down control play a role in overcoming limbic friction.
    02:57 🔄 *Building Cognitive Skills*
    - Cognitive skills like focus, relaxation, and overriding limbic friction can be enhanced through practice.
    - Neuroplasticity allows for the development of these skills.
    - Alertness and dopamine levels influence the ability to override limbic friction.
    03:38 🤔 *Third-Person Perspective*
    - Adopting a third-person perspective can help in overriding limbic friction.
    - It allows you to anticipate future rewards and take actions accordingly.
    - This perspective can be particularly helpful in challenging situations.
    04:30 🌟 *Applying the Concepts*
    - Modulating reward systems and top-down control in real-time can be a valuable skill.

In my opinion the opposite is just as bad. I've spent almost my entire life in "3rd person" and am realising I've basically missed out on life - the only guaranteed thing that comes in the future by ignoring the now, is death. The baseline only gets worse as your body slowly withers and time marches on. So whilst thinking of the future is good with regards to doing short bursts of activity like exercise or diet - long term that sort of mindset can lead to a lot of regret, just as living only in the moment can.

This is main reason for burnout. Healthiest existence is working hard playing hard. Not as in party do coke and drugs type of way. But mix achievement with those mindless times with family and friends, vacations and even just laying on couch, watching tv at times. Both today and tomorrow matter.

It's funny he brings up "third personing" cause I used to often times, if I couldn't get myself to do something, to just pretend that my body was a character in a video game and I was a player watching the game from above and I was just "controlling" myself to get out of bed and do things. Like a video game character wouldn't say "no I don't wanna" they just do what they are ordered by the player so I just pretend that I physically can't say no and I just do it

I don’t think it’s that complicated. I think he learned how to apply that primal desperation humans have for survival into everything he does (yes it’s real and yes all humans have this ability because we are animals). What’s hilarious is how people are like “aw he needs love”. lol once you’ve felt that primal desperation feeling, you’d be able to know exactly what it is. Especially when it’s non-violent and about work.

The point is there are 2 ways to increase motivation: 1 is to use dopamine increasing drugs. 2 is to feel and experience being on the cusp of getting what you want, even if it may be a long time away in reality. Mentally grabbing yourself by the scruff of the neck and making yourself do it in third person can help, but this only work if you continually feel the reward.

    None of this shit works.
I order to stay motivated you need to have a deeply personal attachment to the task at hand. You gotta find a way to love it so much that you forget you're doing it. You don't think about the goal. You think about falling in love with the process. You gotta get a spirit of playfulness and creativity with it.

May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God Almighty be upon you, my brother. It is not permissible to publish your music. It is the sin of everyone who heard it. Please delete it. It is also not permissible to show the private parts, the private parts from the navel to the knee. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, commanded us to cover the private parts, so my brother, cover your private parts. May God reward you well. Just as backbiting is not permissible. They said, O Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, what is backbiting? The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Remind your brother of something that he hates. Therefore, brother, anything you mention, comment on, or speak to people or make comments, and from these words you know that none of what he hates is backbiting. This is backbiting. Therefore, it is best to ask for forgiveness and forgiveness from that person so that no retaliation is done.” From you on the Day of Resurrection, and as you know that we did not guarantee ourselves, let alone someone comes who takes good deeds coldly and without effort, so the rights must be returned to their owners. It is not permissible to publish music for you. It is the fault of everyone who heard it. It is also not permissible to publish things about infidels or wear their shirts or imitate them, whether a football player. Or a representative, because this involves glorifying them, boasting, and being loyal to them, and we as Muslims only take pride in our Prophet Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, by following his Sunnah and spreading it, and the Companions and the Mothers of the Believers, may God be pleased with them all. It is also not permissible to qaz’a because the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, forbade us from doing so, and it is not permissible to shave the beard because the Prophet May God’s prayers and peace be upon him, we never shave it just as it is not permissible to photograph people without their permission and publish things about them without permission. You must ask for permission and then publish whatever you want. It is not permissible to expose the sinner, but rather he must be covered and not exposed. This can be either by commenting or by publishing something or publications in which the person in the video is a sinful person. Therefore, by publishing, commenting, liking, or anything that spreads more video, you contribute to exposing it more, and so on. Therefore, please delete any comment or like that you made for a video that contains sin, whatever it may be, because they are ongoing sins. Drawing and cartoon pictures are not permissible because they emulate the creation of God Almighty, and it is not permissible to publish them. Pictures or videos containing women are the sin of everyone who looks at them, and all of this, or any sin, the person must cover himself and not expose himself. He would go out to people with them or tell people that he did such and such because it is openly committing sin, and the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, forbade that and said, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him. All of my nation is safe, except those who speak out, and we are all wrong and negligent. The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, commanded us to forbid evil and enjoin what is right. The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said, “Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand, and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue, and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith. So you will say that you did not do it.” With some of the sins that I spoke about, but my brother or sister, with the presence of many sins while I was working on the phone, and God guides us all, I cannot send to someone every time because there are different sins, and therefore I collected them in complete lines, and God is your helper, so I advise you to repent and start with myself and return to God and cover the soul, and God is my brother, death. It will come suddenly. Likewise, every disobedience must be followed by repentance until we meet God. Remove these things that do not please God Almighty. May peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace..........
