      @piobu5357 Před 3 lety +50

      Agreed - you can see cost-cutting in the GTI on every corner - no sunglasses holder, touch-sensitive steering wheel buttons, no physical buttons and dials for volume, temp, and climate control, cheaper materials, no 360 camera even as an option, etc. The interior just looks...plain - 7.5 GTI was just better. Saw it in real life - the headlights sit at a weird angle, and the rounded grill doesn't mesh with them at all. The car looks like someone left it in the oven too long, it got bloated, and everything just stretched apart awkwardly. It just doesn't look like a BMW to me. Good value, and premium materials/tech, for sure, though.
      The GTI somehow looks worse than the 1-series now. The sad-looking headlights angled downwards make the hood look more bulbous, and then there's the mono-brow - it looks like some Skoda now. GTI 7.5 looked much better (and it didn't feel as cheap inside, either).
      Anyway - looks are very subjective, just my opinion.

    Wet Metallic Brakes - great advice from Mat. Lots of sporty cars have metal pedals and they are lethal in the wet. I've had many a slip in the past. Drying your shoes before you drive is a great Top Gear Top Tip from Mat. Or perhaps I should say a Car Wow How ... er .. I can't think of a punchy term here. Anyway, I dry my shoes if its been raining and before I drive my metal shod Alfa.

  • @dennisstaines8005

    I had five Golf GTI's from a Mk1 five speed, MK2 16V, MK2 8V 5dr, MK3 8V & MK3 16V. The Mk1 was great apart from no brakes (had to use special pads to fix), MK 2 16v was a nightmare cost a lot was poor quality but once fixed wonderful to drive. MK2 8 V was fine apart from clutch gone after 19,000 miles. Both the Mark 3 were absolute crap, poor quality, duff gearbox and changed the 8V after year to 16V which managed to be worse. In the end the dealer refused to fix an issue, went to another VW dealer fixed in an hour with a £40 part. VW HQ did not give a stuff so I sued got my money back and bought a second BMW and never looked back. They are not perfect but the dealers admit when they do not get it wrong and fix the problem. They do not tell you to sod off. Had 5 BMW since plus a Mini Cooper S and they have had some problems but are clearly quality products and a 323i and my present 530i have done 130,000 and 156,000 respectively and my 530i still pulls to 7000 rpm ! and has a lovely balance. VW are vastly overrated and expensive. I had great joy when they got caught out with dieselgate after the treatment we received from them. Really like the 128ti, and my daughter bought a new 118i Msport in 2018 and nothing has gone wrong, quite brisk and very frugal and a quality car. Customer service is key and VW don't care.

The 128ti has been consistently hyped by the motoring press, and the motoring press has always had a soft spot for the GTI, so the Beemer must be pretty good. Neither are particularly good looking cars, but BMW wins hand down when it comes to the interior. Not only does it feel really well made but it retains buttons and the idrive wheel. I want to buy one to, but I have been reading about BMW's reliability so it makes me hesitate. Sometimes I have a hard time believing the negative perception of BMW reliability. They have been manufacturing cars for a long time. I think it is a combination of lack of maintenance and the way people drive BMW ( they tend to drive fast and ...) but this does not explain problems with the more expensive models like 7 series..
