Is it painful to be induced with a cervical foley balloon?

- You mentioned that you're going to be induced in just a couple of days, so first of all, congratulations on that! And you mentioned that your doctor is going to use a cervical foley (or a balloon) to help with the induction process, and so let's start out with what that is. It's a rubber tube that's inserted through the cervix, and so you at least have to be a little bit dilated for it to go through, and then a balloon is blown up on the other side of the cervix. This applies pressure onto the cervix, and that, in conjunction with contractions that are usually induced by using pitocin, causes the cervix to basically dilate over a period of time. The balloon is about the same size as a 3 to 4 centimeter cervix, and so when the balloon falls out, then we know that you're 3 to 4 centimeters along.
The benefit of doing this is that the active stage of labor starts when you're 4 centimeters, and so a lot of the labor process happens between 0 and 4 centimeters (or trying to get you to the active phase), so the cervical foley helps with this. And then from 4 to 10 centimeters, you should go a little bit faster, and your body should pick up, and change about a centimeter per hour. It's good to go into it expecting an induction to take a while, because if your body were to go into labor on its own, it would prep for it in the days to weeks leading up to the delivery of your baby, but when we induce you, we have to squish all of the prep and the labor into a shorter period of time. So if this is your first baby, expect that, on average, if you were to go into labor on your own, it takes 12 to 18 hours. And if we have to induce you, you have to allow for time for the induction, and then time for the labor. So sometimes the cervical foley can be in place for a couple of hours up to 12 hours before it comes out and you're at the active stage of labor.
Now you asked specifically if the placement of a cervical foley is painful. And it's definitely not comfortable. It's like a vaginal exam that lasts anywhere from a few seconds up to a couple of minutes, depending on how long it takes for the doctor to place it. Talk with your OB provider at your next appointment about pain control options so that you can be more comfortable during the procedure. Good luck with everything. Again, congratulations ahead of time on the birth of your baby. And if you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.
I’m getting induced in 7 days and I’m about to pass the fuck out reading these comments 🧍🏻♀️
I'm getting induced tonight.
Well how was it ?
Girl I’m sat in the labour ward trying to find out what it is they’re about to do to me😫 pray for me ladies🙏😂
The comments scared us to death. However, our doctor convinced us to do it and she did amazing. We felt so dumb letting others comments scare us. Just a lot of pressure she said. It did hurt a little coming out but it was pulled out and didnt come out on its own. We just wanted to write a comment to let others know my wifes experience was not bad at all and we regretted waiting to do it. It truely wasn't bad.
This method was the most effective and most comfortable one for me out of 4 kids. I’m having my 5th baby in a few days and I’m being induced this same way again, and I’m looking forward to it. 🥰
Can u plz tell it’s painful
I feel like crying just thinking about this method. It was the most painful thing I have ever felt in my life. Complete torture. I was 1cm dilated and halfway through the insertion, the med staff realized they had the wrong size tube. They jad to take it out to get the right one and restart it. It is horrendous even with the pain medication.
I had this done a few hours ago. It was uncomfortable when they were inserting it with slight pain but not unbearable. My membrane sweep hurt more. BUT, afterwards was a different story...I got horrible contractions, often. It was horrible pains. I cried. (2cm when they did it) Luckily, it is only suppose to last for an hour. I haven't felt painful contractions since! So if you're gonna get this, just be prepared for the pain after the procedure!
No words can describe the pain I felt with this method!!! My sister and bestie were literally on either side of me holding my hand and in tears because I was obviously in agony. The doctors said I would experience "pressure and slight discomfort"...HA! These people either get a rise out of torturing women or have never been induced/in labor/given birth. It was literally worse than pushing out my 8 lb baby. Do yourself a favor and take pain meds.
Esan Fullington same 😥 it was immediate agonizing pain the moment they put that baloon in 😣
they wouldn't give me pain meds. I don't know why.
Hell yeah shit hurt sooooo bad 😩
It causes full body spasms in 15% of ppl. I was in that % too. Caused me to have to have a c section. It was aweful!
Esan Fullington Agreed. It was the most painful and traumatizing part of my delivery. My mom had to leave the room because she couldn't watch me go through the pain.
first time getting induced with my third baby and i was petrified by reading the comments on youtube but it didnt turn out to be that bad . Got the balloon inserted at 5pm and popped my waters at 11:30pm then gave birth virginally to my son at 1:30am . The painfull bit about getting induced was when the docter had put her fingers all the way in to clip the wire onto my sons head to monitor his heart beat due to it dropping while i was 5cm dilated while having contractions . Didnt get epidural or gas for all my labours
I'm so glad I looked at your comment, booked in 2pm today for this, I'm petrified
@@staceymil2087 how did it go for you?
🙏🏼 You're one brave woman
I’m terrified after reading these comments.
I will NEVER allow them to do this to me again. I have never experienced so much pain and uncomfortable doesn’t even describe it. They told me it would be slight pressure. It was torture. Took 6 hours for me to get to 3 cm and it to come out! I was peeing on myself and puking! I couldn’t even talk to anyone. The doctor came in after and told me some women say it’s similar to pushing without an epidural. NEVER AGAIN. I didn’t even get a warning
I let the comments scare me but in my case it's not painful. I had it put in last night and the speculum was the only thing that hurt. I walked to a bus stop and bussed home after and had no problem sleeping. It hasn't fallen out yet and it's been 12 hours but I have been getting contractions so it must be doing something!
First of all... this was the most painful thing in the whole laboring process. If I have to do it again I would definitely get an epidural beforehand or talk with my OB about the other options available. The pressure was so bad!
Exactly!!!!!! I didn't feel when I was having contractions but this!!!! Holy crap I screamed!!!!
I cant relate. It didn't hurt at all for me. I was 2cm dilated and 70% effaced. Cervix very soft so it went in easy and had no issues at all
@@BotanicalblackgardenI'm 2 cm dilated and 70% effaced. hopen I'll be okay
Unless you have pain meds don't do this! It's not just uncomfortable, it feels like someone is taking a knife to you down there. My pain threshold was crossed before my labor even started. The nurse I had also ripped it out before it was ready to come out (Dr was upset she took it out so early) I will never let them do this to me again. My sister and husband were with me during the procedure and they were both shaking and crying by the time it was over having to watch me go though that much pain. (Dr said it was as much pain as a prisoner of war victim) and those were her exact words.
Amanda Adams If the doctor knew how much pain it would cause, why in the world didn’t she give you pain meds prior and during?
Mine was the same experience 😓
I could not even have it in me for over 1 minutes. I had them remove it immediately.
Would you please go over prostaglandins? I love the way that you explain things!!
Oh hell no, I'm glad I've been doing some research. My dr has booked me in for induction next week and sad she wanted me to have this method. I'm going to tell them straight I only want the gel or the IV and epidural.
Had children before. My balloon insertion and dilation took About 10 minutes. Traumatized. 1 to 3 cm...rock on!
I’m a chicken for pain, especially in any vulnerable area so I got the epidural before they did this procedure and I’m SO glad I did. I’m 2 and half weeks PP and I just remember feeling pressure when they were inserting it, no pain.
You can request the epidural before this procedure? That’s good I will gonna do the same in chicken for pain as well I’m not even pregnant I’m just looking information for the future 😂
OH god, I wish I knew before hand that they were going to use this on me. I had noooo idea how much torture I was in for. "Pressure and slight discomfort" my ass... IT's like they discovered the best torture device for a woman. This thing broke me. I was trying to have a non-medicated labor and birth and I was doing really well until they used this. OH, and the idea that "your body should pick up, and change about a centimeter per hour" is bullshit. I labored for 17 more hours (a total of 30 hours of labor) and still had to get a c-section because I never progressed beyond 4 centimeters.
Im sitting in the hospital after just having this done 😩 its so painful and i want to fo unmedicated as well 🥺 im sorry that was your experience
That's crazy because I dilated to 4 with the balloon, then to 5 on my own but nothing else. I ended up having to have a csection too. I wonder how many women have to have csections after this balloon...
This thing is so painful than pushing a baby out... I thought as if i was running mad. I cried like a baby.. I will never opt for this ever in my life
If this was done outside the medical field, they would go to prison. The pain was so bad I was vomiting uncontrollably . they don't give any pain blocks for it either. It made my husband cry I was in so much pain. I get nauseas thinking about it 4 months later. I never want this- ever again.
It's been almost 4 years, and I still stand by my comment.
@@cita_m can you deny it ???
I'm sure you can. I was ignorant, and just did what my OB suggested.
Y’all need to stop scaring me😩
I felt the membrane sweep i had 2 days ago was more painful. The foley balloon insertion was not that painful at all. I’m so sorry to read all the horror stories here. Wow. I definitely felt that level of pain when I had a d&c after miscarriage, but the foley was just a little pressure and slight cramping for me.
My hairstylist had this and said it was the most painful thing she has ever felt and she got it after the epidural was administered.
I had this with my last delivery. It hurt so bad I wanted to yank it back out myself. They started with some disivable tablet that didn't work then used the balloon. Omg it felt like my whole lower half was cramped up and trying to break. You have to keep it in til it falls out on its own. Even when you go per it stays right there.
VERY very painful like torture
I remember when they inserted the balloon and started filling it up my body immediately froze up, i could barely breathe or talk. And as soon as my nurse left my boyfriend helped me to the bathroom cause i felt like i had to poop and i just started shitting and vomiting everywhere lol
I cant relate. It didn't hurt at all for me. The cervical check i had done at 36 weeks hurt tons more. I didn't really feel much. I was already 2cm dilated and 70% effaced. Cervix very soft so it went in easy and had no issues at all. Only thing that hurt were obviously the contractions that came after. I feared having this procedure done, all for nothing!
Gah, I've got this planned for Thursday. I imagine any stretching of the cervix isn't going to be a good time but hopefully it goes quick.
How was it for you? I’m scheduled for Sunday 3 days away
Yes yes yes it is painful!! Do not allow this!!! I believe this was torture. I literally screamed for my mother who wasn’t even there. It was horrible, traumatic, worse then contractions. There is a balloon is your uterus!!!! I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.
Oh god dude I’m about to cry 😭 I just don’t want a c section 😭😭😭
I was induced and had the ballon without an epidural and omg it hurts like hell, I had 3 doses of the pill and then on Pitocin and no progress then they did the ballon and that dilated me to a 4 but 2 days later I was still at a 4 😭 I had to have an emergency c section.. I’m only 22 and this was my first baby..
I got a cook catheter inserted, and it stayed for 12 freaking hours!! It was damn painful, uncomfortable...omg don't want to try relive the memory
I had to get that done, it hurt so bad I couldn’t even sit straight up, I didn’t even want to move. (Getting induced hurt so bad for me) I was planning on going without the epidural but shortly after they used this, I tapped out & got the epidural. They tried some type of narcotic first & it dropped mine & the babies heart rate low so my only other choice was the epidural but at that point i was begging for it. I could press a button & pump it every time I felt pain, so the epidural was really a blessing with my whole birthing process.
4 days til my induction! can't wait. i'll be 40w 5d
Omg I don't want to be induced now 😫😭Are we able to walk around and bounce on the birthing ball at least?
Short answer…yes!!!! Hurts a lot!! They had to put “tension” on it because it didn’t fall out and it was almost 12 hours and then they had to pull it out.. that hurt more than baby coming out and recovery after! And they gave me a shot of morphine before pulling it out but it still hurt like crazy. That was the worst part of the entire labour n delivery..hope y’all’s falls out on its own 😭🙏
OMG! My ob wants to do this to me. I’m 38 weeks pregnant and already 3 cm dilated he says if I have no change in my cervix in a few days he wants this procedure a night before my induction with pitocin.
I already don’t want pitocin because I had it with my first labor and it was a nightmare.
I never felt pain when I got mine inserted just pressure. The pain started a couple hours later and kept me up most of the night. It was like contractions every 5-15 minutes. I would say on a pain scale it was a 4.5. It got me from a 1 to a 3 before my induction in the hospital.
Same
yes it hurts lol, I got it and it was really uncomfortable
Most painful part of my labor!
Yes, it hurts a lot
I had this done. They gave me an epidural first, then inserted the cervical foley. I was 5 cm dilated after removal and booooy after that it was on and popping
My friend says it’s sooo painful.. I have t heard of it outside of the US
It's! If you have tilted uterus... Was incredibly uncomfortable
The insertion is the worst pain. At least 9/10. After wards I felt no pain just pressure. Do not make the mistake I did and allow them to do this procedure without pain meds. The midwife said I could have pain meds afterwards well I didn’t need it afterwards. She also lied and said I would only feel pressure.
I just wanted to comment that I had this done 2 months ago and my doctor told me it would come out on its own once I reached 3 or 4cm. My contractions started getting so strong they felt like I was 7 cm ( I had 3 kids before this one) and that's exactly what I told the dr. And she said if it hasn't come out on it own then you aren't more than a 4 after a couple mins my water broke and the balloon came out. Turns out I was 7cm and the baby's head was pinching the balloon that's why it didn't come out. Because of this I wasn't able to get an epidural because it was too late.
It's never too late for an epidural
I was miserable but it was worth it at the end
@@Botanicalblackgardenyes it is. My baby almost died because I was ignored saying I needed to push and I was 9/10cm. The epidural halted my contractions and she was stuck in the birth canal in distress and I couldn't feel anything to push her out. She had to be delivered with ventouse and has mild cerebral palsy as a result plus a nostril that was ripped to shreds from the pressure of the ventouse on the back of her head. It has never functioned due to scar tissue. So yes, it is dangerous to give an epidural too late.
Absolutely the worst pain in my life, so not get it!! I immediately needed the epidural
Can we ask for the epidural before they insert it?
the balloon was EXTREMELY painful and i almost threw up from the pain. besides the contractions the balloon is the WORST pain i have ever felt they should give an epidural before they do that and the balloon shot me into labor RIGHT AWAY.
I have this scheduled for tomorrow as an outpatient so have to go home with it strapped to my leg. No pain relief offered... I'm terrified now reading these comments
I feel pissed off, so many people say this foley bulb is excruciating but the video say “it is uncomfortable”, seriously!! This is the second video I am watching it’s presented as “oh it’s just uncomfortable...” So misleading !
They lie to get you to consent to it and then you're fucked.
Good thing I have an cool OB...he told the onstaff hell no start her on pitocin and give fentanyl also... thanks Dr Thomas...right on
Fentanyl,!? No way
I’m getting induced with the balloon and I’ve had it done to me with my other son and it was uncomfortable for me and then they done it again and still didn’t work so I had the gel and that’s work in 5 minutes
I’m hoping not to get induced coz I’m wanna have this baby naturally coz I hate the pain tbh come on lady’s
I'm 39 weeks and due to have this balloon in. I'm now too scared to have it done. 😮
I mean, it's obviously your choice but honey I would tell them to do something else. The pain is SO bad. But everybody is different. I just remember mine, it was honestly traumatic I was screaming telling the male dr/nurse whoever he was to stop and he wouldn't til finally he gave up.
Its so painful.more than contractions
The pain was excruciating! Wasn’t even a success. My cervix was too high and I was only 1cm. Other options please
I am gonna be done this balloon procedure on Saturday October 15/ 22 and they will induce me on Sunday oct 16/ 22 by reading this comments makes me more scared and worried I am 1cm dilated past my due date. I don't know how can I am gonna tolerate it. Even having contractions I cry hope for me it will be lest pain. I will try to take pain relief before it start. Wish me like all 😕😒
How was it?
How to put a hyper active toodler to bed
Hurts SO much
