How can I naturally induce labor, and how many weeks along should I be before trying?

  • Many mothers are wondering what they can do to help induce labor naturally. Of course you get to the end of pregnancy and you're desperate to do whatever it takes to get that baby out because you're so uncomfortable and you just can't wait to meet them. It's a fact that babies do best if they're born after 39 weeks. They eat better, they grow better, they breathe better, and they're more likely to do well overall. Until 39 weeks just let nature take its course and try to hang in there and be patient. Once 39 weeks comes there are some things that you could do to potentiate contractions if they start. Your body should up to weeks to days before your actually go into labor do some prep work where your body is releasing hormones called prostaglandins that act on the cervix and cause it to soften, move forward in your pelvis, and thin out. When you do start having contractions those contractions were caused by a hormone that was released from your brain called oxytocin. It acts on your uterus and tells it to contract. You may have irregular contractions in the beginning that slowly work up to regular contractions. Once you start to have regular contractions and you're 39 weeks or beyond move around, do what you can to potentiate them because when people aren't full term yet we tell them to lay down because that can help contractions go away. The reverse is true, if you're full term and wanting to have a baby move around, clean your house, go for a walk and be active and maybe it will make those contractions get worse. A good test is if you're moving around and you sit down and they stop, it's not time yet, it's not real labor. Try that if you get to that point. In addition to moving around one thing you can try if you're past 39 weeks is do the same thing which got you into this situation in the first place, if you know what I mean. Sometimes intercourse can stir things up and afterwards if you're contracting then get up and move around and again, these contractions may become regular and intense which then leads to your cervix dilating, which is the true definition of labor. As for herbal supplements or things you can eat or take to induce labor it's best to avoid those types of things because there isn't any clinical data that shows that eating or taking anything is effective and in some cases it can be harmful. I've heard everything from pineapple to mango to watermelon and eggplant and spicy food and even walking on a curb and pretending it's a balance beam, I'm not sure how that would help. I've heard just about everything including castor oil. Especially in the case of castor oil it is not safe. Don't take it even though your friends might tell you that it will induce labor. It certainly might but it can be harmful to you and your baby and should be avoided at all costs. In fact, induction of labor is best left up to healthcare professionals. There may come a time in your pregnancy when your doctor decides that for your well being or the well being of your baby you need to deliver. Do know your ultimate due date is 41 weeks. If you're still pregnant on that day your doctor will plan on an induction because placentas have an expiration date and they don't feed your baby as well at that point. That's your ultimate due date and that's what you should put in your head so you don't get too discouraged if you go past 40 weeks. Of course there are many other reasons for medical induction but in some cases doctors will also offer an elective induction where at 39 weeks because babies have been proven to do well at that point the doctor allows you to come to the hospital if your cervix has done all of that prep work and is favorable and ready for labor and we start oxytocin or pitocin instead of having your brain give it to you, we give it to you through the IV. You start to have regular contractions which then in turn cause your cervix to dilate and open up so the baby can come through and be born. When done in the right circumstances the risks of induction are low and it's nice for some parents who have already had a baby before because you can get a babysitter and dad can get work off. This is a good option for many women as long as the doctor feels like you're doing it under the right circumstances. If you have any more specific questions about your situation don't hesitate to talk with your OB provider and they can shed light on what's going to be best for you and your baby and what you can look forward to. If you have any other questions in the future for me feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/IntermountainMoms and recommend us to your friends and family too.

I am very happy it’s a milestone, although I have very bad pelvic girdle pain, I know it’s no harm to baby. I also have been bouncing on my Swiss ball everyday since 38 weeks, and my nesting has been so full on. I am happy and hope to have baby full term reaching 40 weeks + although any time now would be awesome 💕

      It's actually because it doesn't just make you poop. It can often make baby poop while they are still in you. This is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Can cause infections and even death as the baby continues to breathe it in while your body scrambles to try and labor to get the oil out. Your body knows it is toxic and tries to evacuate fetus to keep them from it. Doesn't always work because baby just isn't ready even with the extra push. Don't know who those doctors were, but I wouldn't trust them with my or my baby's care.

      Castor oil is a laxitive and if ingested way too much can cause baby harm however 1-2 tablespoons will not harm you or your baby at all.
      drink more juice and or water and youll be fine.
      Some people exaggerate with the amount of castor oil then end up having complications and others just never tried castor oil and say nonsense that scares other women simply.because of "what theyve heard" im on my 4th child hand castor oil for 3 of them theyre healthy as can be the only thing that was wrong with castor oil was honestly how bad it tasted as oil doesnt mix very well and is extremely thick. Dont let other women scare you. If you drink the right amoint you and yoir baby will be fine

      Ka they never should have let you go past 42 weeks, the rate of stillbirth is much higher past 41 weeks. At 40weeks 1 in 1000 babies will be still born. At 41 weeks its 10 in 1000. By 42 weeks its 19 in 1000. Im glad your baby is healthy but your doctors were very irresponsible for letting your pregnancy continue that long.

    So just because your not 39 weeks your suppose to sit down and do nothing during contractions. Haha. That is dumb. So woman's body don't go till 40 weeks and it's not like you know it's 39 or 40 anyhow because it is not a positive week estimator by ultrasound or last period. So to do nothing is just lazy and dumb! If it's not real labor it will stop. Your body might actually need those "preterm" contractions for the big day.

    why is castor oil dangerous? because of dehydration?

    • @zluv3785
      @zluv3785 Před 6 lety +4

If you drink the right amount you and your baby will be fine, yes it can often make you dehydrated thus why you should drink more than the amount of oil you take

    Thats not true that babies who born after 39 weeks are better at eating & blah blah, my son was born 38 weeks he was alwas best at eating & everything loves eating everything, my neice & nephew was 42+ and they are skinny & dont like eating much even fruits so i disagree with that part

    • @zluv3785
      @zluv3785 Před 6 lety +2

      They always try to scare women into waiting as long as possible even when some things they say are not true, 37 weeks is healthy but for me.my.mark has always been 38 weeks and up is considered full term. The only reason they changed full term from 37 to 39 weeks if because of some women years ago who ended up having complications with their kids funny how they dont mention if the kids moms was on drugs or drinking something they shouldnt have or if theyre pregnancy was even healthy from the beginning all moms have ti suffer u til 39 weeks thanks to these women years ago.
      ive seen plenty of healthy babies born strong with ZERO complications from 37 and up. I dont really agree with what she said.

    • @Nevertoleave
      @Nevertoleave Před 5 lety +2

      It’s an average. Not every baby develops at the exact same rate but over the average most babies have specific problems or have developed to a particular point. Once people though 37 weeks was full term but studies showed that there were still complications and on average they didn’t do as well short term as babies born two weeks later. Long term they fair about as well so it’s not a huge deal if the baby is born early term. When she says they don’t eat as well it means as newborns not older children or adults. On average they don’t suck as well which means they can have a lower weight until they get the hang of it. After all a baby born at 40 weeks had a few more weeks of practice sucking in the womb.

      Yeshh well your son may have been best at everything at 38 weeks but that is out of the ordinary and implying his behaviour negates the average is wishful thinking and dangerous. I would rather believe what research says based on a sample of thousands of babies than what you say based on looking at one baby, or two or three.

    You seem to have a very bias perspective on natural remedies...
    further more I'm not sure why we are encouraging moms to try to induce themselves at 39 weeks.

    • @MikaelaLoeper810
      @MikaelaLoeper810 Před 7 lety +5

      omgsh can we please not perpetrate the lie that induction is safe, and scheduling when your baby is born is actually safe????
      for the excuse of having a baby sitter??? I can't even finish this video!

    • @Nevertoleave
      @Nevertoleave Před 5 lety +7

      She wasn’t encouraging women to be induced. She was saying that some doctors would allow it at 39 weeks if the mother wanted it because the baby is considered full term then and only if you could give birth any moment anyways. Alternatively induction maybe be used if something is going wrong and the baby needs to be delivered to possibly save the baby or the mother’s life. Or if it’s after a certain amount of time roughly 41 weeks then they’ll want to induce because the placenta can’t support the baby much longer then a few weeks after the due date so there could be something preventing you from going into labour naturally.
      And she’s saying the “natural remedies” people normally take to induce labour don’t have any known affect on inducing labour or we know is harmful through studies so “natural remedies” should either be avoided or not bothered with. She’s also saying the most natural thing to do is to just try moving around since we know that does help stimulate labour.
      Think about it this way, if you can’t take certain medications or eat certain foods because it could harm the baby why would they want you take it just to induce labour and why would they encourage you to eat something they know doesn’t work? And if certain foods did cause labour they’d want you to avoid it the whole pregnancy to avoid miscarriages and pre term labour.
      There are herbs and such that can cause you to miscarriage or go into pre term labour but they generally have to be taken in higher doses then as a spice to food, such as in a herbal remedy. Which is one of the reason you’re supposed to tell your doctor if you take a herbal remedies. They’ll know if it thins your blood or causes birth defects or miscarriages.

    Wouldn't your body already know when it's time and what to do. We are the only species that has to have a stupid doctor in the room and a million nurses. All that does is cause annoyance. I'm about to have my son in a few months and I'd prefer nurses and doctors back off with any non natural things and not ask me stupid questions. Like what's your pain level... That's when I'd just say let me snap your finger and we can see. Lol seriously though medical staff bugs people way to much and they think they are helping all they do (at least for me) is piss me off. Not to mention how crazy rough they are with the baby. I don't care how tough a baby is stop tossing him around. Idk I'd rather have a baby in the woods than a hospital but that's looked down upon.

    • @rheaandmichael7958
      @rheaandmichael7958 Před 8 lety +51

      That's not actually true many animals lose their young due to going over or not being able to go into labor many animals also die during labor. We are the only species that has the ability to intervene for mothers. Women cannot always go into labor on their own and in certain cases shouldn't. Women for hundreds of years have died in pregnancy and during birth because they didn't have access to medical intervention. The fact that we do have intervention means babies and mothers survive longer now than they have just a couple centuries ago. Don't believe me? Look up calcified pregnancy. Go to a local grave and look at the number of infants buried beside their mothers.
      I know being informed with actual facts
      Is hard when you has the Google and self righteousness about your perfectly functioning fertile body.
      If bodies always knew what to do all the time why do people have allergies, autoimmune diseases, epilepsy, spinabifida? Clearly nature wreaks havoc and science and medicine have found ways to correct or help in all of the cases where nature threw a hissy fit.
      The one time the body is expected to always know what to do is when it's carrying another body. Sanctimoniously spewing bullshit...because Google said so!

      Rhea L actually owned you. She is totally right. I can see your point though about overbearing doctors and nurses, but seriously, they are just trying to help. Go have your baby in the woods and when there is a complication and you or your baby die, then the baby's father (if he's actually in your baby's life) will be kicking himself for not taking the reigns and make sure you have medical care.

    • @SereneMoss
      @SereneMoss Před 7 lety +10

      i dont care who "owns" me. i was stating my own opionion. if someone doesnt need extra medical care why would it be looked down upon anyways. and yes alot of doctors try and hurry births for their own gain. example the birth of my own son they rushed it along for no reason. there were ZERO complications. so sorry your pissed bc im speaking from expirience. and if it was a choice then why was i told i HAD to come to the hospital and they refused to let me birth from home. so i go into the hospital and there was nothing wrong with me nor my son. yet they bullshitted me into getting pushed then lied to me about needed pitocin then later told me i didnt need it. so yet again they lied.
