@@easternWashington. Mediocre tank for tanking. But good as a platform. Then again, didnt make sense to switch tanks every 2 years, the germans learned thst the hard way. Allies found other ways to compensate for shermans abysmal armour protection (although even crew members admitted as i remember, the only reason more of them lived was because it had so many escape routes). T 34 wasnt much better, but it was really hard to escape i heard. Hence why the allies dumped so much resources into artillery and ground attack aircraft.

When it was introduced, the Sherman actually had a very effective 75mm. It’s only later on that it began to become outgunned, but while the Germans were upgrading their tanks, so were we. It’s just that we were across the pond, and logistics made it harder to effectively deploy upgunned tanks.
I believe the Sherman ended the war with one of the highest survivability rates, and did its job when needed

It wasn't so much repair individual parts but instead was replace the entire assembly/pack. The complex time consuming parts were designed as quick change packs. The entire drive train came out by undoing a handful of bolts and connections same for most of the engines and turrets.
Say your drive train was damaged, don't tear it apart piece by piece and spend hours or days fixing the shaft, dif, gears, or whatever because it was a package design. You just pull the whole drive train out in 1 hour and slip a different drive train pack back in in 1 hour. So your back up in 2 hours instead of days. Then you could send the damaged drive train pack back to a depot without worrying about how long it would take to fix and keeping a tank out of the fight. Same went for the engine packs and turret assemblies. Don't fix individual parts they have whole packs at the ready that don't require you to tear something completely apart. Just pull it, plug it, and send it. This was mainly possible because of the huge US industrial and material capacity.

If you include manufacturing the Sherman *was* the most advanced war of the tank. The Sherman was made in high numbers without having to cut corners that lowered quality, it's what everyone pretends the T34 was. It could be deployed anywhere in the world and work well, it was easy to repair in the field, and maintained a great ratio of armor, speed, and firepower. People only look down on the Sherman because they look at Tigers laying in ambush on friendly territory during the late war and marvel that the Shermans took more loses on the offense.
