The best part, however, is that not only was the lieutenant colonel whose Flying Fortress led the raid -one Robert Rosenthal - Jewish, but he had no idea he'd killed Friesler until after the war. A rabid anti-Semite who (presumably) believed the Jews controlled everything was accidentally annihilated by a Jew who didn't even know he was there. A fitting end.

I work in a small bookstore in Germany and we are still selling this book on a regular basis. We always have it here. It's still being read by many.

Something else that I found was pretty cool about the 1930 movie was how it was filmed. They brought in actual World War 1 veterans who served on the front lines. The veterans showed the cast how to properly march in formation, wear their uniforms and go over the top of the trench. Several of the background characters were war veterans as well. Hope someone else finds this information interesting as well.

In case you need convincing, as a Finn I start with two counts of treason.
Both my grandfathers fought in WW1. My father's father suffered PTSD (then called shell shock) and ultimately died in a psychiatric hospital.
My mother's father never spoke of his experience and suffered hearing loss and chest infections which I suspect were from the noise of shells and possibly gas attacks. His brother, my great uncle was also profoundly deaf
I'm french and both sides of my family fought in the front lines. One of my great grandfather was a captain and barely survived a gas attack while rushing to put his mask on (left permanent scar on lungs i think) he vividly wrote the terror of the germans emerging from the smoke and the chaos that ensued.
He was captured and placed in a german POW camp and actually had wrote down the German treatment of them was respectfully and honorable (unlike the nazis that would come after). He even drew a pretty detailed map of the camp, for what reason,to escape or not, we really don't know but its a nice drawing.
I think it was my great grandfathers brother, but he unfortunately suffered severe shell shock (PTSD) and life was extremely difficult for him to do day to day tasks. His marriage that was planned before his service was called off when he returned as he was such a state of disarray..pretty sad really
My great grandfather fought in ww1 and my grandpa says he came back just fine. He was over all neutral to it all other than the feeling of it was his responsibility to have done so. One story he liked of his dads time there was how one night they were shooting artillery towards their position, and one landed so close to the trench it blew the tent cover away from where they were sleeping in the trenches, and a bunch of people panicked and started running, and my great grandpa just went back to sleep thinking it was probably safest to stay where he was, plus he was absolutely exhausted
I had 2 great grandfathers, that due to their thankfull young age endet up being double veterans.
One was rather short, not yet dwarfism, but what happens, when you're a rural outta there farmhelper + mining teenboy. His top height was 1,58m. This didn't give him ANY bonus points beeing in a charging infantry line, but the slightly more "prestigious" position of sapper / tunnel digger. Also being short helps in that case, that the enemy is spotting everyone, before they see you.
He was a heeeaaavy drinker, due to his post war job leaving him enough "free time to think" when not beeing at home with the wife (who was bigger then him) and his son (who was DEFENATLY bigger then him). But thankfully not shellshocked. But mostly always tired and somewhat scrawny, no matter how much he ate. And he had an appetite, that would put a nowadays american to shame.
He died peacefully, but for sure, never talked about the war, which turned bad for his son.
The other double vet coped the loss of two world wars, his potential second child who gotten to the sixth day and then called it a life (RIP lil Grunkle Leopold), the missed opportunity to join up a little settlement in chicago city, still looking for a properly staffed honorable drugstore keeper and his dear wife just 2 months after the war that dragged him back out of the homestead for a second time, he became a bit of a Dr jekyll and Mr Hyde. If the day was good, he was a hard working drugstore keeper with two employes, security for the shop (two trained sweet german shepherds, they where slightly smaller back then). The dogs kept good care of his wife and daughter, while he was out, while also keeping the snooping noses of party brownnosers off his ground and bookshelves.
Just WW1 alone created a hidden monster, who can scare a teacher to almost death just from speaking, after his daughter came back home with a ripped ear, due to her teacher discipling her too hard. Who said after the invasion of poland was emergency broadcast on the radio, that if he knew the godamn godlost Nazi Fat Cats where dragging his families asses into an even bigger obscenety of humanity, he'd taken the next ship to New york and then earn tickets for lil Ruthie and grandé Thessa.
He was later a rather silent recluse after running his bigass shop. retiring a made man with a merrily wed daugher, but no wife and no doggos. Still good company, but seriously despizing his "In Law comrades" coping mechanisms. But thats civillian class struggle below the ruling ceiling.

I could cite my grandfather, who fought with Partisans against both German occupiers and Croatian puppet-fascist state, which eventually landed him in German prison, thankfully not extermination camp. He was fond of retelling of stories and anecdotes from his past, even about how resistance worked and some funny cock-ups, his relationship with my grandma, who was also a part of resistance... really, any subject (especially geography and his pornography collection), but even as he recognised my interest in history, whenever I (or anyone else) would try to get him to talk about his war and prison experiences, or how it worked, he'd clam up. I'd understand not wanting to rehash the humiliating and painful things that happened to him, but he wouldn't talk even about the events. Again, after the civil war that broke apart Yugoslavia, although none of my friends nor family participated in it in the slightest, my then boyfriend knew several guys who had been in the war, and again, when asking about their experiences of the battlefront, they simply wouldn't talk about it, no matter how drunk, high... not a word about it would come out. The most I got from them was "I never thought I would be fighting for _that_ kind of outcome/country" (meaning, what former Yugoslavian republics, that became countries, turned into).
It's kind of stunning to me that we can't talk about the thing that we're never supposed to forget.

I don't think you need to describe every last gruelty from the movie in intricate detail to get your message across. I actually quite appreciate the fact that he doesn't show it or only describes it with very little detail. Because I found a lot of it quite disturbing and I'd rather not be confronted with it again.

If you want both a brutal anti-war book and an extreme story in censorship, consider Vassily Grossman's "Life and Fate." The KGB confiscated the author's spent typewriter type.
When Johnny Got His Gun is another good anti war piece of media.
Grossman in general is just a great writer. I think everyone would benefit from reading really any of his works.

I read this book by chance in middle school. I was sick and tired of all those stupid teenage resistance books and I wanted something a little more realistic. I asked my dad, an army NCO, for suggestions. This book was the only one he could think of.

Infantry attacks, helmet for my pillow, generation kill, with the old breed, and one bullet away are all great memoirs of various wars. Starship troopers is a fiction story but loaded with great imagery and messaging regarding war. I read all of them when I was in the military.
Lions of Kandahar, The Only Thing Worth Dying For and Sled Driver are also amazing books about war/high-level special ops stories

I had never seen any other All Quiet movie or read the book before I watched the 2022 Netflix movie and... just holy fuck. I kinda knew what to expect considering that it's the first world war, but the story that was told and the way it was told was so brutal and tragic that I was sad for the next couple weeks after watching it. The crater scene hit me right in the gut and it took a lot for me to not break down seeing it. Genuinely want to pick the book up and read it because of that movie.
You should. It's an excellent book. That movie sort of misses it's point by connecting his story to all these historically significant events. It's just the average, insignificant, brutal story of a German soldier who fought and died and it didn't really matter. Totally different story.
The 2022 film doesn’t do the story justice, and the peace negotiation scenes were not part of the original story as told.

Jesus Christ. I cant believe this. I was lucky to watch All Quiet both the 60-70 variant as well as the Netflix. It is a great movie and i beg people to watch both forms and reasearch WW1 if you love history and want to know why the world is the way it is. It was a horrible event in history that turned the world both against itself and against the youth of a generation.
I will also say this here. I wish those we lost so long ago rest in peace and I wish we never see another War like this again. If we do not study or learn from history we will lose more young men to fanatism and to the gears of war and political barons who do not care for us but the money they line their pockets with.

I've never been affected by a piece of media in such a way, not until I watched this movie; specifically the scene where the main character was fighting the French soldier in the crater. Hearing that French man gurgle and struggle for his life despite knowing it was already over and our protagonist realizing how horrible it was to listen to him slowly pass and trying to help him. It hit me hard.

This movie sucks, watch the older one it is alot better.
While I liked this movie in its own way and felt it was a decent representation of how brutal war is, I actually prefer the 1979 and 1930 versions as they stay more true to the book. 1979 was my first version and probably my favorite out of all of them though. I feel you get a better background of the characters and you feel like you know them better.

@@quuaaarrrk8056 There were a few scenes that were left out of the new version that disappointed me unfortunately. One being when Paul returns home and goes back to his old instructor. I feel it was such a powerful scene and didn't know why they would leave it out. In addition, which version of the foxhole/frenchman scene did you like the most? I like all versions of it and I feel all are emotional in their own way.

Started reading All Quiet in March of 2003 in Kuwait before we crossed from Matilda. Ended up finishing it in Nasiriyah just south of the bridge. I didn't expect to find it as relatable as it would end up being. The isolation, confusion, abject absurdity and terror of conventional warfare he describes is eerily timeless.
If you haven't read it or seen it, do so. The modern remake is good, but misses a lot of the heart rending detail the book provides.

Its because the german people were sick of the war and were suffering from it. The German army weren't cartoon villian's who were pure evil war mongering demon's, they were people,and nothing less. By the time it was 1918 the German Empire was onthe verge of collapse both economically, and internally due to increasingly radical parties that actually tried to overthrow the new weimar republic due to the mass starvation and death that was occuring because of the british blockade of merchant shipping to the German Empire, and the overall hatred for the Kaiser and the new Weimar Republic.

Excellent video. CZcams needs to get its head out of its posterior and realize that context is important and stop pointlessly censoring work. History - raw, fact based history- should never be censored. History isn't supposed to make you feel good, it's supposed to make you think. This book was compulsory reading when I was in high school and it was one of the few I actually did read. Keep up the great content - your videos aren't just entertaining, but important.

There are also yoga vids where the entire vid is a woman bending over with her ass to the camera and is trying her darndest to show ass and pussy through her yoga pants. I find it immensely interesting that anyone would censor anything to do with this book today. Maybe was just where I live, but this book was actually part of the mandatory curriculum for eighth grade. Since then it has remained at the top of my list for my most favored novels. My sister who is five years younger than myself just wrapped up eighth grade and I was absolutely elated to help her and her friends with the discussions that surrounded this book in the curriculum.

One thing you might not know about the preservation of the original uncut version of the 1930s movie is, that it originally was lost a big fire and the only reason we still can see it today is the personal collection of Joseph Göbbels him self. So the man who hated this movie probably the most, rescued it.

This story is easily disprovable. The film was an American production, in English, with global distribution. The idea of a "preserved uncut version" is cute but it's best to stick to reality

It doesn't even take Google to find out, just knowing the basic details of the film + common sense would tell you this is a myth. If you did Google it you'll find 0 information showing that the film was recovered from Göbbles, rather you'll find plenty detailing screenings throughout the west all the way from its release until well after the war. Arguing that lack of evidence means it could be true is also incredibly foolish due to the overwhelming evidence suggesting it was never lost. Please, if you're going to be a history enthusiast I recommend practicing healthy scepticism for any grand claim, even more so when there's little support from cross referenced first hand sources

I’m currently re reading the book for the first time in about twenty years. This book and unbroken are great references of the trials of war.
I think wendigoon also had the issue of copyright when making a similar video about the original film.
He ended up putting a filter over the movie, and a "reaction cam" thats just him aggresively eating hummus.
My senior year of highschool I chose to take a WWI history class. I decided to do so as my former civics teacher was leading the class and I really enjoyed his civics class. It was one of the best decisions I have made. We delved deep into All Quiet On The Western Front. Also we explored our local WWI history. I learned just how influential my local Red Arrow and Rainbow national guard units were during the conflict. When we forget our history, our history will come back to say hello. Additionally, I love your channel sir. From one random fact enthusiast to another, keep up the great work.
You must be from near me! I live a bit south of Red Arrow highway now, but I had to read Al Quiet in I think 9th grade when I grew up.

I really appreciate your dedication in getting this video made. All's Quiet on the Western Front is an incredibly important story in its own right, but the events surrounding the story are also important to understanding that moment in history.

Growing up my dad taught US and World history. All Quiet on the Western Front was part of his curriculum when he taught WWI. It really is one of the books that movies do well but still never quite get it all. And it will forever make you second guess voting for a warmonger. Thank you for the video!

Having read that book, I see war as an activity nobody directly involved wants to be involved and anyone not involved directly hails it as patriotism or whatever the case is at the time.

@@viveka2994exactly. The book and the movie cover up the fact that many Germans openly welcomed both world wars. All nations were enthusiastic but the Germans were a late developing country and really really wanted to fight for their country and Kaiser.
Ernest Junger and Ernst Von Salomon were “old fighters” and influenced many Germans with their ideas.

saw this movie as a freshman in high school (mid 1970's). part of history class. maybe my teacher was your dad; more likely that a lot of teachers saw the educational value of this movie. as they say, war is hell.

I wonder what moustache man thought of this movie, being a veteran of the Great War and all. Apparently his experiences in the war were one of the reasons there wasn't any chemical weapons used, so he must've realized something.
The reason he became a moustache model was his big bushy Teutonic stache kept his gasmask from sealing properly and he got a dose. Ever since, he trimmed it up and ruined it for anyone else.
Yeah even though the Germans used gas on Concentration camp victims.
He was transporting letters and messages to the trenches. He didn't actually fight or anything.

This film was a fine telling of a WW1 story. But it was *not* "All Quiet on the Western Front" in anything more than name. The training part was removed (the book's entire first act!), they subbed in a prologue about some kid... they made up an entire B plot about the diplomatic negotiations... changed details about characters and events...
Imagine if they rebooted "Full Metal Jacket" and took out boot camp and Gunny Hartman and just started the film from "Me so h*rny, me love you long time"... and inserted an original B-plot about Kissinger and Nixon sabotaging the Paris peace conference.
It's literally that flagrant.
This was an original story, elements of which alluded to parts of "All Quiet"(if you want to be charitable and not call it a blatant ripoff), but they really did not need to put that name on this for any reason other than marketing.
The 1979 TV movie is still the best adaptation, imo.

I was so disappointed when Himmelstoss wasn’t in the film. Plus, the name of the novel is taken from the ending of the novel where Paul dies on such an insignificant day which was super impactful. In the Netflix film, it ends with a huge battle scene. Definitely the worst of the three renditions if you are comparing it to the book. Not to mention how they also changed Kat’s entire character and death alongside the dynamic of the entire group. A huge part of the novel was the relationship of the characters and how quickly it just went away. Here, there are no characters to speak of. You’re right, it’s a generic war movie, not All Quiet on the Western Front.

I read the book after watching the netflix thing, because I liked it so much, and now im so disappointed how they didnt even try to be faithful to the original story
Thank you for making this despite your frustration. As a german myself i think it is important to keep proper documentation of all the good and bad stuff our ancestors did. Both my granddads were soldiers in WW2 although on opposite ends of the political spectrum. So i am part of the last generation to hear first hand reports. If we today choose to tell storys differently it's fine, but we have to keep old storys as they are. The way how a story is told is as important and a document of its time, as the story itself. Rewriting even fictual novels because some words 'are offensive' is as good as burning the book and we all thankfully know who was a big fan of that.

This made me realize that this book series is kind of the German counterpart to LOTR.
I haven’t watched the latest film yet but that ending you describe is so far from the book’s ending, which is absolutely perfect & gives book its very title. It’s a great book everyone should read.
It's a good watch if you have the time, I would recommend you watch it at home at night for a better atmosphere.
Yeah, I watched the latest version and was pretty disappointed. The plot doesn't follow the book much. It does pull in a few of the big scenes but it changes both the plot of the book and the message of it.
The book and previous movies, to me, had the message of this is war. War sucks. It's brutal and indifferent.
The latest version seems to push the message that the Generals and the Politicians are doing everything they can to make the lives of the grunts as awful as they can while they themselves gorge on the finest luxuries of life and complain if their croissant is slightly too dry. And yes, the ending is just awful. It expects soldiers to make a full frontal assault across no man's land during the last 15 minutes before the ceasefire. There's a scene where a whistle blows and everyone engaged in hand to hand combat just puts down their weapons. The only upside I can say is that it does show the terror of combat.

@@morganmcallister2001 Glad it wasn't just me. I've not read the book or seen the other two versions. But I watched this one and I never engaged emotionally with it at all. It was very well made. I would like to have seen the bit with the tanks on the main screen. But there was nothing to the main character. Who spent it all reacting not acting. Which isn't how you write drama. Don't think the time jump helped either. It's a four star film for me, but it's not one I'll ever come back to.
Thank you for persevering with this episode. Not being able to call a spade a spade doesn't stop spade lovers from romanticising what a spade is, it just means everyone else forgets what a spade is.

Stak, alot of the actors in the 1930 version of AQOTWF were conspicuously old for a bunch of 18-20 year Olds because they cast WW1 veterans for many of the roles.
That’s not true. In addition to being American and very much less likely to be part of WW1, most of the cast of the 1930 were too young with most being just 10 in 1918.
You‘d be surprised at the number of German immogrants who were also WW1 veterans were hired for the movie.
They didn‘t use US veterans because it was a story from Germany about a bunch of PBI up to their necks in the shit, and an American veteran would not know acting according to the regulations of the German field manual from a piece of strudel.
I'm a big fan of the term "no-no Germans" that's funny stuff.

The "World War 2 In Colour" series from 2008, made for Channel 5, had a fantastic mood-setting intro; horns and strings. For some reason, presumably because there are video of That German Leader´in the intro, copies on CZcams of this intro was taken down by CZcams for "Hateful Content". It is a documentary series about the Second World War. There is literally nothing Hateful in it.

German here. “Im Westen nicht Neues” was the only book i’ve actually read (and twice at that) when it was assigned in school. All the Schiller, Goethe stuff i did not care for at all.
Something about the thought that that easily could’ve been me if i had been born 90-100 years earlier gravitated with me.

I remember watching this as a kid which was inappropriate for my age but the horror and impact it left on me has forever shaped my view of war. Amazing video.
Most Germans welcomed the war and were happy that it came and lots of Germans would later go on to be nostalgic for August 1914.
Some people like war and are good at war , but we can’t let that truth be true all war is horrible and everyone in it has a terrible experience 😂

When you think about it, the most shocking thing about the whole censorship when talking about historical event is how much it backfires.
Using terms like "unalive" and "evil mustache man group" instead of calling these things what they are, it takes out the impact that all of this should have. Instead of being shocked by historical events it becomes a meme.
The worst part is, those terms are in and of themselves begrudging attempts to keep history alive despite corporate site censorship! It sucks how attempts to keep discussions alive still help whitewash them ;_;

The 2022 film was such a good movie. Shockingly brutal and honest. I’m far from disillusioned as to the horrors of war, and it was still eye opening. Definitely a must watch.
If it means watching it in uncensored form and to make sure you get paid for your hard work, I would go watch it and subscribe to your patreon. Also, I love the original and own a copy of it. First time watching it was in 10th grade American history II class.

You could also watch the original 1930 movie. It makes some changes from the book that I think help make it a better antiwar story.
You can find All Quiet on The Western Front in some odd places. I found and bought a copy at a Dollar General being trampled on amongst all the crappy romance novels. I just needed a gallon of milk. I also found a copy starship troopers a few years later.

Well, the answer is pretty obvious. First YT sold its grassroots creators down the river about 7-8 years ago when Wojcicki decided to mangle/strongarm the algorithm to show people what SHE (or THEY) believed was more important, which included all the Legacy Media and the puppets of the approved narrative. As for the censorship of certain subjects, it's the same reason it has always been: control. The same reason the Germans did it with the book he's talking about. Without censorship, their facade can fall, free speech allows people to question, doubt, criticize or scrutinize ideas that they don't want the public looking too closely at.
I hate it too 😒 but sadly it usually works, so they'll keep doing it.

The summary you gave of the movie is entirely different from the book. For example, in the book Paul is killed when in his trench during a quiet period, a month before the war ends.
Excerpt, the final page:
"He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence:
'All quiet on the Western Front.'.
He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an
expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come."
Seriously, that was half the point and the new movie ignored it.
