The Greatest or Worst Holy Roman Emperor: Barbarossa (History of Everything Podcast ep 142)
Frederick Barbarossa (which literally translates as “the red beard”) was one of medieval Europe’s most famous rulers. Originally from Swabia, Germany, he grew up and united almost 1600 German states and micro-states, was crowned Holy Roman Emperor, went on two crusades, was excommunicated, supported an anti-pope, reconciled his relationship with the Pope once more and built diplomatic relationships with royal houses across Europe, from Byzantium to the British Isles.

It's not that they couldn't keep up with guns. It is more complex problem. Not many people know, but russians tried to copy hussars. Without effect though, because they had insufficient training and morale. This formation was verry costly and recruted elites of elites. After 100 years of wars in XVII century, poles just couldn't afford to maitain winged hussars (in XVIII century only the richest nobles could afford to join, and even then they prefered to send substitude servant instead of serving personally).

The Sherman and the T-34 were both designed under the principle that its crew would be dead before any major repairs were needed. The difference is that American tank crews were expected to die of old age.

First time in my life I hear about it. I've heard a lot about stuff we got from lend-lease that helped to significantly cut losses and win the war WAY quicker and with WAY fewer casualties than it could be otherwise, but this statement about Sherman looks like some "secret documents" bullshit. I wonder where you even got the idea and why you talk so confintly about it. Thought higher of you tbh

Well, from a Western point of view you could switch "Roman" for "Christian". So, everybody was "Roman" in that sense and the Roman empire was all of Christendom. That's how you could have emperors that were not Roman in any ethnic sense because the Roman empire was never ethnically defined anyway. The Byzantines had a whole other view of course but I don't think they ever went around outright saying that the Germans had no business calling themselves Roman emperors. They just avoided using the exact title whenever possible.

14:10 "Before this he wasn't Holy Roman Emperor. He was "king of the Germans"" Well, yes. But They used to style themselves "king of the Romans" for about a century at this point, indicating that they're actually in charge of the whole thing already. The imperial coronation by the pope was important in a more symbolic way. When you're emperor you can't get disposed so easily. Which is probably why they stopped that act some 300 years after Barbarossa and just went on calling themselves emperor upon their royal German coronation.

Russian propaganda for 80 years - The T-34 was a lot better than what came before it, and its advantage was there were a lot of them. But they couldn’t shoot straight, had huge gaps in their substandard and brittle armour, they had terrible SA and the crew conditions were abominable. I’m not American but I consider the M4 the best tank in the war and so does that veteran Iraq tanker, The Chieftain. Reliable, carrying a gun big enough to do the main job of a tank, deal with infantry and strong points but still be fast to reload and carry a lot of ammo. Plus they had a two plane stabiliser, giving the tank a small chance of being usable when moving below about 10kph. (The exact number escapes me). There were also versions to specifically deal with tanks, although most tanks did not fight other tanks. And that reliability and ease of maintenance is what brings the Sherman to a pinnacle not met by other tanks, although the Panzer IV came close, however it was never available in the numbers of Sherman’s or T-34s. Like everything else Russian, the fact we let them get away with their bullshit about defeating the Nazis single handed has led to them developing a supremacist, neo-fascist world view. Did you know that 55% of the oil output of the USA went to Russia in WW2? And without American Jeeps and Trucks, the Russians would still be at the Volga. Or more likely, would have lost. And if Hitler had never let his racism get the better of him and not attacked Russia, they’d still be on the same side as the Nazis.

A few more issues: -Excessive heat-treating on some of the armor, and none in other places, making it incredibly prone to armor spalling (Basically, a shell hits the tank, doesn’t penetrate, but the impact makes shrapnel shoot off of the inside of the hit and shreds the crew) or parts wearing down INCREDIBLY fast. -Lack of pretty much every part that is not absolutely necessary for the tank to move and fire once. -Incredibly cramped space, making the survival rate on a penetrating shot VERY LOW. -Soviet logistics as a whole being utterly terrible, so T-34s would often not have ammo, spare parts, fuel, etc. -Because they were so cramped, the spare parts that they did have had to be stored externally… where they would be shot at. -Shifting between gears was difficult or entirely impossible for higher gears, to the point where it would break the lever, making driving the tank incredibly strenuous. -It used the Christie (not sure I spelled that right) suspension, and did not try to make up for the loss in stability like British tanks did. -More that I forgot
