- It isn't a 'luxury brand' but the VW Touareg is TOTALLY a luxury SUV! Subscribe here: / @therightcar
This review focuses on the 170TDI V6 diesel 4Motion five-seat version of the Touareg, but there's also a couple of other really compelling diesel models covered here, including the 210TDI Elegance and the 210TDI R-Line.
But the base model is now WAY better value than before, with heaps of new standard equipment, and as with the predecessor, it can tow up to 3.5 tonnes.
Can you get over the fact it's this much money but does wear a luxury badge like a Lexus, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo or Genesis?
Let me know in the comments!

Got mine 2 wks ago 210 Tdi R Line. It's just replaced my 2022 model. This one ups a notch or 2 again . Great vehicle
What differences are there that made you buy the new one?
@pastorofmuppets8834 , Apart from an updated interior & exterior , there isnt an overly great difference . The new one is more refined , & a little quieter. I try & update every 2-4 yrs. The previous R Line 210Tdi was superb . I'd had it about 2 yrs & had done just over 90,000km . I'll probably try & keep this new one a fair bit longer. We can claim our vehicle use for tax purposes as well
hahahahahahaha! - I'm glad you went there. We were all thinking it anyway, LOL
It's great to see you review a real vehicle Matt . I have a 2018 Touareg $ 64,000 drive away new, magnificent vehicle. Thankfully, I can get blown in the face in mine. Best touring vehicle I have had. 6.1 litres touring 7.1 around town. This new looks inviting but too expensive now. I'm glad mine is a Touareg and not a Twarrag.😊
What goes on in the mind of people who choose those nasty wheels on an excellent looking car???
If you plan to buy new and turn over inside factory warranty then worth considering . Buyers planning to hold onto vehicle for +5yrs Landcruiser every time.
For long distance travellers just don't expect a lot of support if VW breaks down in outback. Makes for very expensive tow back to a dealer.
Nicely said.
I like the POV version of the interior gives a better feel of the car
Thanks!
I’m going to do it for a few more videos coming up.
I like the Touareg, quality features and a stylish SUV.
Thanks for the review. The Tourag is definitely on my list to consider. Currently have a V6 wildtrack, but the wife doesn't like driving it, and the teens hated the backseat on an Adelaide road trip. I need the towing for wood collecting about 6 times a year. What else should I consider?
Here’s why - you won’t get slapped with unforgivable depreciation. I traded in my 2022 R Line Touareg for a Patrol Warrior after 1.5 years of ownership. I paid $130,000 for the Touareg and got $70,000 on trade in. In that time, I had numerous issues with the car, and Volkswagen’s customer service has been nothing but trash. If you want luxury, stick with the main players. Mercedes Benz have always given us exceptional service and my wife’s GLE, whilst not quite as refined as our Touareg, feels worth its price.
I’m not trying to dispute your experience, but a made in USA GLE is built a whole lot worse than these (Slovakian) Touaregs /Q7s/Cayennes. You clearly got a good GLE, and I’m glad Merc looked after you, but I’ve heard plenty of horror stories about GLE/GLS out of that awful MBUSA factory
@@YZJB We did have an issue with our GLE recently. It went into limp mode due to a loose hose to the turbo. MB organised a tow, gave us an EQE courtesy car, and had it all fixed 2 days. We had an issue with our prior Benz as well but again, their customer service makes them easy to forgive. I’m not big on luxury cars but MB’s customer service makes them hard to leave (for us). VW, by comparison, are just absolutely awful. The Touareg was a refined vehicle but I wouldn’t get another VW ever again.
got a golf mk7 2.0 TDI over 170.000km on it, never had any issues
Looking forward to your Hybrid review.
Apprecaite the review but Id really like to know what the cow in the background thoughts are
Hahahahaha.
Moooo. And I quote. Moooo.
Do you think the gv70/80 is a good competitor?
am really not liking the too much screen interiors nowadays am sure am not the only one
The headlights can do everything, pity for those that do not drive at night.
Nice if you don’t leave the city or own it past the warranty period. Not for me, I bought a Prado.
7:48 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 I know the feeling. Not talking about being blown, having your speech runaway from you. And by then it's too late to take it back😂😂😂
Hahaha I try and keep it natural without too many edits 😅
215kg tow ball weight on the higher specs that are more suited to towing? That's a killer...
Yeah it’s really only a 2500kg tow car
5 seater isn't an issue. Considering trading my Next-Gen Wildtrak. Family hates the back seat and I don't need the bed. 3.5 ton works great for occasionally towing a trailer.
Nice! Just be mindful of downball weight limitation.
What would you recommend for towing 3-3.5t in a family suv?
Honestly, the bigger the better. Check out my Patrol review - it’s a terrific tow car. Land Rover Defender also one of the best I’ve towed with.
Otherwise, if the budget can’t stretch that far, Rexton or MU-X.
@@therightcar Thanks will do!
What am I missing - I just saw 2 x R lines advertised in Vic as demos for b/w $116k -$118k excl on roads ? What happened to 110k ?
Dealers can charge whatever they want
Could be because they had factory options, and accessories fitted to them ?
As it’s a Demo, a dealer can ask whatever price they want…
Has it got..... reliability; or is that an optional extra?
While not all VWs have a great reputation for reliability, the Touareg is generally considered very reliable (ours is 160,000km and counting without any issues). The VW 3.0 TDI is in millions of cars (literally) and the gearbox is actually the same as the one in a Toyota Landcruiser.
Like most VW models they are usually very good but if something goes wrong (speaking from experience) you will experience problem denial, return visits , frustration, and overpriced service costs.
$80,000+ cars for the great unwashed 🤪
the Land Cruiser is SO disappointing that it comes with a diesel engine and not the petrol engines that the US gets
Local buyers prefer diesel that is why Toyota stopped supplying the petrol. There is still Patrol for petrol heads.
Patrol has a proper V8, Lexus LX is available with the turbo petrol from the LandCruiser… plenty of other options
@@YZJB thanks to you and the others for the suggestions. For me the Patrol is too big. The new Lexus GX is an option as some models of the Land Rover Defender, but I would have preferred something less expensive. There are not that many options with permanent continous 4WD as an option. Most of the other options either don't have it at all or have a 4auto mode which is not ideal and inferior as an all weather traction mode.
Seat bolstering looks very narrow and uncomfortable for elders for long distance?
It’s not. I mean, I’m not “elder” but I spent about 3 hours straight in one of these and got out feeling great.
I would avoid the dirty diesel unless you need to tow
Compare apples with apples...
SQ7 vs 200 series
Real competitors is audi q5
Wouldn't it be good if any VW lasted like a Toyota ? VW make some great looking cars that are nice to drive but ,,,,,,
Because it is Toyota! Build for last.
Toyota lost a class action law suite in Australia due to quality issues with hilux motor, google it😮
How can this thing legally tow 3.5T
It has only got a max tow ball weight of 280kgs and a maximum rear axle load of 1530kg. There isn’t many 3.5 t trailers/ caravans out there that won’t exceed these numbers once attached and loaded let alone a full tank of fuel, 2 adults and a bit of gear on board. I’m sure there will be people out there that will defend its towing ability but they would be uneducated lunatics.
Touareg and Land Cruiser should NEVER be mentioned in the same sentenced.
One is a legendary off-roader with 70+ years of heritage the other is just a VW.
You just broke your own rule.
whenever i look up Volkswagen's most say they are the Most Unreliable Cars to buy
We’ve got a 3 year old VW Tiguan R-Line spec with 80,000kms and never had any issue. Services aren’t cheap tho
@Cap9054
I have a 6 year old Touareg 86,000 km not an issue at all. Some services are $1000 thankfully not all.
@@buncha5651 Those big services hurt. Our last big one was $1400. Glad to see another VW owner with no issues. The unreliable ones are probably the GTIs that the little boys trash around.
I have a golf over 250000 and no issues at all… vw is really good car brand, safety is most important for them
They need to work on that reputation
An expensive & pretentious way to procure transportation 🤷♂️
The only problem here is that it's a diesel ⛽️
That's the best thing about it.
@@buncha5651 It's the worst thing.
Imagine spending $100k on a vw when you can get a better fit out for half the money that's arguably more reliable from the Chinese.
VW thinking their brand carries prestige or something...
What a stupid question didn’t even bother to watch this bloke is a goose
Calm down champ
No one forcing you to watch muppet.
Don't be mean😔. He is a nice person.
If you have to ask that question, why are you even a journalist in first place?
I’ve got one now. I’d have the Touareg. 😚
U can definitely buy a vw if you're a millionaire after warranty huge expense ridiculous resale value 👎i only have a Lexus and my custom made Toyota Camry hearse in my.garage u can certainly keep your vws to yourself 👎🤠⭐🦅🐨🦘🍀🐴
Toyotas are the worst cars to drive. I can’t fathom why people buy land cruisers when they can get something like a X5 with same price (unless they really want to take these cars off-road which most people don’t).
I have heard rattles in a demo car (Toyota Land Cruiser). And let me not even get started how boring it is to drive RAV4.
