2024 Volkswagen Touareg R (inc. 0-100 & braking) review: Performance SUV bargain?

  • The Touareg used to be all about smooth touring with a diesel engine. But that’s all changed with the hybrid V6 drivetrain that has trickled down from nameplates like Bentayga and Cayenne. Is it any good? Paul Maric finds out.

Beautiful looking car, the only thing I’d personally like is the V6 TD. I currently own a Launch edition 2019 Touareg and it’s so impressive in its economy, power and torque. The way these big SUVs handle is bloody impressive, especially at 2500 odd kgs. Almost zero body roll and the way they hold the body flat throughout the twisties is downright impressive. The comfort of air suspension is such a luxury too.
Although this R is out of my price range I’d definitely purchase one if I could afford it. The lapitz blue is a stunning colour too.

Have been holding off buying a new Tiguan R as I knew a new Toureg R was coming. I don't have the facility (or the urge) to buy any sort of electric/semi electric car but i have been curious about the latest Toureg R. This review told me everything I needed to know and I'm now happy to save the 50 grand and go with the Tiggy R. The design may be a few years old and is about to be phased out - but that's fine by me. It goes like the clappers and sticks to the road like the proverbial to a blanket. I reckon there'll be run-out sales as well before the end of the year. Thanks Paul, another great video.

I’d be interested to see how this compares to the higher output diesel R Line, yes it’s not going to accelerate like the full “R” version but I’d be keen to hear wether there’s much of a downgrade in the handling/ride. I’d sacrifice the extra power and a teeny bit of handling for less initial outlay and cheaper running costs because the hi-po diesel is quick enough for me in outright get up and go.

Any chance of quoting ground clearance when you test any SUV. I am one of those rare people that actually takes these vehicles on unsealed roads and also does a bit of light off roading. The ground clearance is one of those specs that is usually difficult to find but it is important to me. I must admit, that tyre profile is a bit concerning for unsealed road use.

Is having load sensing roof rails linked to the stability control really necessary? Who wants to put a load in the roof and then drive the car at the limit? All that's going to happen is the load will come off the roof. Anyone with any sense would just drive slower with the roof loaded. No nanny electronics required.
It will be the end of the world when this car needs repair out of warranty given it's complexity. I am not a VW hater either. I had the first iteration of the diesel Tiguan (manual), and it was one of the best driving, practical and reliable cars I've ever owned.

If you buy a new vehicle, any for that matter, drive it for 3 years, trade it and get the same amount you payed for it.That will be value. But that never happens,as deprecation factor sets in. It's a cost throughout ownership. That is not value for money at all.

    • @StephenFogarty2023
      @StephenFogarty2023 Před měsícem +1

Fix a flat / can of goo, can’t fix a tyre with sidewall damage.
And, this vehicle is on 22” tyres, with very low profile…
So, sidewall damage is much more probable then something on 18” tyres.
If u r driving out of metro areas etc, and get tyre sidewall damage, u r then stranded on side of the road, and waiting for a tow truck.
If it’s a puncture elsewhere on the tire, can of goo, won’t necessarily work.
If it does, u would need to drive slow / cautiously, and limited driving range with goo in the tyre..
Due to the hybrid stuff etc, this Toureg not even available with a space saver tyre…
I suppose u could buy a full size spare, or a space saver tyre, and have this in the boot when driving out of metro area.
But, that’s not necessarily an ideal situation, especially if u need the cargo area for luggage etc.
A full size spare tyre, is the best scenario, particularly if u r driving on bad quality roads / remote areas etc etc..
I think the diesel Touregs, come with full size spare tyre, or, a space saver spare… but, you can swap this for a full size tyre…

If the can of goo, can’t temporarily fix the flat tyre, at least Roadside Assistance / Tow Truck, should get to you fairly quickly
But, country roads / country driving, is risky with only a can of goo, as your option to fix a flat tyre.
