  • Arundhati Roy shot to fame when she won the Man Booker Prize in 1997 for her debut novel, The God of Small Things. Twenty years later her second novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, finally hits the shelves. We got the chance to talk to her about early success, what motivates her to write and why the caste system that dominates Indian culture is just one of the ways in which labels can control and restrict us.

A controversial, brave, bold and honest voice. People like Arundhati are seldom liked any where. That is a pity.

With 'amazing grace,' Arundhati Roy; you've opened myriad hearts and minds around the globe via your undaunted determination to pen truth to power. Namaste!

As an Indian, I am proud of her. I may not support her some views. Its ok. We live in a democracy

If you dont agree with her, its your problem. Your feeling may not be my feeling as an Indian. I may getting too much insulted when my people gangrape women and my people live in abject poverty

Have you heard of Noam Chomsky, one of the greatest intellectuals of all times. He is jewish American and criticizes USA. For eg, do you really think our media is free to report on Kashmir? If Kashmiris get same benefits like a Keralite, why on earth are they not willing to join India? When corporations and government want to displace indigenous people in Central India for bauxite, what should they do? We live in our middle class home as if in a bubble and reality of our own. Writers are intellectuals who reflect our society. Dont you think its bad as a party to force dietary habits on others? Our lives are ruled by major corporation who have shares again in big media houses. In Nazi Germany, first thing they did was to shut up writers and intellectuals

As an Indian, I dont think India is going in a right direction. I like
Modiji being a powerful leader and puts India as a great nation on
international platform. Indians are getting divided. You cannot force
people not to eat some meat. Whats then the difference between muslim extremists and them? Modi is going in a direction which Hitler did. Hitler lifted a bankrupt Germany and brought Jobs to his people. At the expense of millions of Jews! When BJP gets majority in both houses, who knows how they will change the constitution. When you use religion for dividing people in a country, you can see where they ended up in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh?

Are you talking about a Hindu constitution or a secular indian constitution? Kerala has 30% Muslims and Christians and Hindus who eat beef. So you cannot force people. What I eat and with whom I share bed with is none of anyone´s business. First we have to make sure that our mothers and sisters can walk freely on our streets without being raped. Isnt it a shame women dont have safety in a country where we worship Goddesses?

Arundhati wears on her left hand an old-fashioned analogue watch. Her ad-libs are more thought-provoking than a selection from an anthology of Wit and Wisdom. Power absolves itself. Her universe is peopled with creatures, minerals, phenomena, ephemera, and epiphanies. Rocks and stones and trees. And a consortium of cartels wearing green and swearing by it.
You are right, baby. It's time to divorce hope from reason. Art is the apotheosis of solitude.

The interviewer is one of the worst I have ever seen. "Almost sub-human in their poverty" - has he even read her books?! She renders poor people their humanity in the fullest and most beautiful way.

    • @WaterstonesTV

Hi Gabriel. What I meant was that others treat them as sub-human, not Roy as the author. As you say, she renders them brilliantly and with an attention to detail that makes them feel as real as fictional characters can. The way that some in society treat the poor, or rather the way that people can walk past those suffering extreme poverty is to see them as 'other', as not like them, to place them outside their sphere so that they don't have to deal with the responsibility for them. That's what I was alluding to - sorry that I didn't make that clearer.

mahatma - "god , my birth centenary is fast approaching ! i feel the world is forgetting my life & message. don't u think so? ". god replies " don't worry my son . i have an angel who is researching on you for the last twenty years. first she wrote hymns on me 'god' n now she is into you .her greatest skill is to present the pure fiction as facts as if she was the ' eye witness of all things' (my position hijacked). i need to alert my child obama to be brave because her next twenty years are dedicatedc on my another beloved son martin luther king.do not worry. india is a land of seekers. no matter how much spice they eat they have the capacity to digest. your life was your message. it is upto the people to absorb your values from their perceptions ! god bless india , sorry i bless india ".

By god India has changed in the last 25 years! The millions of have nots now have a purpose. The middle class now includes what used to be the poorest and the weakest (not all ofcourse we still have a long way to go) now have the means and importantly a voice!! Finally Indians are beginning to take pride in being Indians. Just that Ms Roy doesn't want to believe it. She even seems sad about it.
I say this as an urban educated, book reading, freedom of speech loving 'left leaning ' person.
