I thoroughly enjoyed your video and storybook style of answering these 8 pen questions! Your "trashy" to "classy"🎩 illustrations made me smile, and while I have not yet tried a Benu pen, I have followed a similar path from not feeling sure about it to really enjoying its sparkly body. I had not heard of Cross pens before seeing your video, so I appreciate you introducing me to them and sharing how this longstanding tradition of collecting them eventually veered you into the fountain pen category.

Hi, Alison. Thank you. I don’t know how I missed your channel. I’m looking forward to checking out your videos. The Cross company unfortunately is not what it used to be. They’ve downsized quite a bit and just aren’t producing like they use to. Benu’s are great.

Thank you for sharing. It was great seeing you on camera. And I agree 💯 that if you can afford the expensive pens, they can be nice to have, but this hobby can absolute be enjoyed on a budget. I love my Jinhao 82’s and TWSBI Eco’s as much as my more expensive pens. You have a wonderful collection.

Great video Terry! Lovely collection. I’m with you on the Benus. I couldn’t see the appeal, but then one came along that I liked so I took the plunge. Great pen. Something to be aware of with the Montegrappa Legacy Extra Grande is that it’s quite a heavy pen. Stunningly beautiful, with that unique celluloid smell, but not suitable for long writing sessions. The pen weighs 64 grams, 52 of that is the pen body. It’s the unusual metal filling mechanism that adds the weight I think.

Hey Terry, nice to meet you! You‘ve come a long way! I felt the same way about Benu pens at first, then I recently bought my first one from a friend in the community and I love it! My nib journey was similar, broad and medium, right now I‘m loving extra fine and fine. Thank you for joining in and sharing your journey! You have quite a beautiful collection!

This was fun! Thanks Terry! I really liked the drawings. I thought it was funny how you said the drugs for your wisdom tooth problem influenced your getting into fountain pens. (: Pretty collection of pens. Good to see you finally! I’m also interested in those instruments behind you. Are you a musician too? I have a Montegrappa Legacy with an italic nib. The ink needs to be primed every time I use it, and I have heard other people have flow problems with it too. Other than that, it is a very nice pen. Shari Zeck has one, and I think you might enjoy her channel if you haven’t seen it yet.

Shari Zeck just put out a video today. I asked about her Montegrappa Legacy, and she said she’s looking to sell it. It’s not the blue one you want (it’s grey), but I thought I’d tell you in case you might be interested in buying hers. I hope you are doing well. I enjoy your videos!

Hi. Thank you for the kind words. You really can’t go wrong with vintage pens. I love the old Watermans. I think there is something special about writing with a pen that was made in the 20s. Oh my, that Waterman 56! That is really a looker! My vintage collection tends to lean Parker but Watermans are nice as are Cross pens. My most used pen is a Cross Peerless 125, which is surprising. That Sailor-made 18k gold nib is like butter.

This was fun to watch, Terry! You have a gorgeous collection. I'm in awe!
I am a pilot plumix lover also. I get them for about $10 after coupons online with Michael's. You can take the nib off of that and put it on a kakuno, a Metropolitan, a pilot Iro-Utsushi dip pen, or a Prera (my favorite!) . It's a medium italic nib according to the package and it's the same one that is sold on the pilot prera and Metropolitan as a calligraphy medium. The nib says CM on those. (maybe it's cursuve medium? Ha ha)
Anyway, keep posting! I'll be watching!

I appreciate you sharing the happiness your pens bring you. Lovely artwork.
A grail pen for me would be the Pilot Custom 845 in Vermillion Urushi, 18k gold F nib. But I doubt that ever happens. A retirees dream.
I have maybe a dozen, nothing over $40. Pilot Met, Wing Sung 699, Hongdian Black Forest, 3-4 Jinhao, 2 Noodler Ahab. I love my Hongdian N7 Blue Peacock F nib, perhaps the best quality pen I have for the money. This one and my Wing Sung 699 have such a smooth, velvet flow on Rhodia paper. I like vacuum fillers.
An everyday writer for a long time was my Pilot Metropolitan F nib with namiki Ink, until I got my first Black Forest. But if I want a precise and smooth line I still go back to the Pilot, let's say for drawing. They seem to be the best low cost, consistent steel nibs for me. I favor EF and F nibs, but I have started using a Pilot 1.O stub quite a lot. My handwriting is better with a stub. A couple months ago I bought a Twsbi Eco in 1.1 stub but still prefer the Pilot. The nibs cost almost as much as the pen, but I may get an F nib for it.
About paper for those on a budget, any Walmart notebook that is made in Vietnam doesn't bleed through. A little more toothy than Clairefontaine papers, but very serviceable for note-taking, etc. I'd say that papers made in India are also a good bet. Any country where fountain pens are commonly used and made have serviceable papers too, so I learned from another CZcamsr.
Paying $15 to $20 for pricier notebooks isn't something I can afford everyday, though there are Japanese papers, like Apica, many really, that are less expensive. What is it about pen and paper that feels so good?
Writer's Blood is my favorite ink. I'd like to have more Pilot iroshizuku: only kon-peki so far. I want to explore some reds and purples. I've shied away from shimmer from what I've heard about clogging but I'm sure I'll give it a try.
I favor darker colors. Waterman Mysterious Blue and Intense Black are very good and inexpensive inks. I have Diamine Oxblood and their Green Black but haven't really taken to it. Recently tried Herbin's Rouge Opera, a dry ink, too dry for me.
Maybe you can tell me, is all red ink generally on the dryer side? I'm looking for a brighter opaque red for proofreading and editing.

    • @drawinsscribblins5326
      @drawinsscribblins5326  Před 3 měsíci +1

Hi, I started using the Jot and the Pen&Gear paper after watching Seaweed Kisses’ videos. It’s such nice paper. I’ve used the Jot mostly and there is no bleeding. I’ve used fountain, fine liners and gel pens with them. They are only $1.25. There are lot of good inexpensive options for fountain pen fans. Pilots are excellent all around pens from the Kakuno to the Urushi.
I like darker colors as well. As far as brighter reds, I like Otto Hutt Red Roses and Monteverde Garnet and Montevetde Ruby. I tend to use Yama Budo more but this may be too deep for proofing. I hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you need anything else!

@@drawinsscribblins5326 now that you mention it I think it was seaweed kisses where I got the heads up about the Walmart paper. When I wrote the comment above I couldn't remember the Pen and Gear name.
Thanks much for the information on the red inks.
I see from the background in your room you're very well equipped! 😊. I had some formal art training in the early '80s, all the basics studio classes. I've always wanted a large dedicated studio space where I had a full stock of materials to just walk in and go at it.
I used to do abstract painting and was in a couple small galleries in Dayton Ohio. Years ago I had an invitation to show, with a group of Kentucky artists, in Chicago but depression pushed it off. Life would have taken different move I think.
