      I love that movie! Natasha Lyonne is awesome, Clea Duvall is hot, and RuPaul is hilarious as an anti-gay counselor 😂. I watched it by myself when soon after it came out on dvd, I’m not even sure why because I’m not gay and not really into comedies much. But it wasn’t a comedy, just a cool, quirky, campy movie that happened to be super funny too. The whole cast was great. Definitely recommended!
      P.S. I like a lot of unusual stuff, original ideas, campy musicals like Rocky Horror, etc., as well as the usual “serious” stuff like Blade Runner, Unforgiven, Shawshank, and a whole load of horror films (duh!). If you the reader of this comment only like films that are paint-by-number, mainstream, big budget-yeah it’s probably not for you. Everyone else should see it though :)

    Damn that was a BRUTAL review. I've been so excited about this movie for months. Last night I watched a Sleepaway Camp marathon to prepare, bc I was hoping They/Them would drop at midnight EST or CST. It did not, so I ended up watching this first. I am glad I have a better idea of what to expect, without spoiling anything. I'll still watch it, but I'm pretty bummed.

    Hey there. I work at a pride center and one program I host is SpooQ-Ky, where we do double feature nights of horror with queer representation, creators, back story, or coding and we chat up briefly how we feel about what we just shared. Academically i have a history with film and literature analysis, so i'm generally an easy sell, but i was with a group watching this. Our viewers ranged from 14 to 62 in age and were from all over the gender and sexuality spectrums- and we... we LOVED it. I felt like it did such a good job of coding the struggles with queer identity and intergenerational differences... I even felt kinda self-reflective about WHO I AM after the killer reveal... I realized... I'm more Molly than I realized.
    First the kids show the struggles many of our youth face- including internalized homophobia (footballer/blonde baker). The counselors represented the power of charisma and the adoption of "our language" as tools used to maliciously foster self-hate (bacon)... the hypocrisy of folx bent by fetishism (doll guy) and the preditory monsters created by sexual repression and double lives (the pervy 'ex-gays'... and the catholic church)... and sadly the deepest of horrors, those who can break us psychologically by planting doubt and dismissal in our lives (shrink, whose death was the most satisfying, tho again... I'm more molly than I'd have thought)... Gender being the highlighted topic and featured characters was good cause now that (at least in the US) sexuality has been relatively protected in most non-discrimination laws... gender and specifically youth who are gender non-conforming are under attack from all over... and in many cases- are losing to fundamentalism ... the kids escaping camp, lead by the black trans girl was a great shout out to the Trans women of color who fought back and created or lead the gay liberation movement... and the sing along... where did most of us find out created families: discos and dance clubs where we met In cover of night, where many of us would never have met if we didn't share this one trait- our queerness... pink is one of many generational 'icons' of music that would he heard in any of those safe spaces. The 'camp' nature and the sexiness I thought created great flashbacks to 80s horror where I saw my first glimpses of sex- albeit- heterosexual sex and mostly 'boob' and panty shots...
    The killer... Molly... damaged and living with PTSD from the same things they perceive the young folks being threatened by, the insistence that Jordan kill (bacon)... in my head I'm thinking burn it all down.. and the next generation of queers saying to us old remaining radicals- we don't need saving... I'm strong enough to survive and overcome this... without the lingering trauma of destroying others- even their oppressors... kinda stung... like.. omg do the young LGBTQ folx want the generation between invisibility and strength to ... take a breath, chill, and believe they're - or better- 'we're' going to be okay...?
    I asked after the film, to our teen group members, "is it like that for you? Do yall got this?" And the consensus was - we want your support, but we don't need your sword... anyway... I could chew up more space with this... but I'll share one moment... during the sing along I said "if football overcomes his internal homophobia and joins in with the other gays..guys... I will cry." He did... I did, and I've been recommending the film to everyone who'll listen for a hot minute. I felt... seen... Celebrated... and in a language I vibe with- horror movies

    O-kayyyy. So I watched along with you. Always such a fun way to do it. Especially for movies like this. Ahem…
    I think my official review was something like “this isn’t a slasher, it’s a dumpster fire.” But I really liked the opening! Spooky fun opening on the highway, and I thought Kevin Bacon crushed his opening speech. I thought, oh this might be going somewhere. I was really invested.
    But then it got progressively worse. Like, every twenty minutes it felt like it changed writers to someone less subtle and less competent until the end felt like it was written by a toddler.
    Kudos for trying a modern conversion camp “horror” movie, but how did this screenplay get green lit?!!!
    I should have just watched your review, but watching it after making it through They/Them really did make the whole experience exponentially better. So thank you!

    Just finished watching it. Emma isn’t wrong, it’s a mess. BUT… I didn’t think it was nearly as bad as you all think it’s gonna be. The problem is 1-character’s motivations and story arcs aren’t consistent and 2-The movie tried to be too many things when they should have focused on it being more of a revenge/thriller horror movie without the masked killer, or they should have gone balls deep into a bloody slasher.
    But she’s not wrong, you can pass on this.

    As a horror fan and a gay man I was super pumped for this movie!
    I heard it starred Kevin Bacon, had a summer camp setting, had a bunch of LGBTQIA+ characters and appeared to be a slasher.
    So I was sold!
    Like with all horror movies nowadays I just watch the trailer once, put in a save the date and didn't look into anymore material on the movie as I didn't want to be spoiled and always like to go into films with fresh eyes.
    This is probably the 1st and last time I ever say this but this horror concept would have worked much better as a TV/limited series.
    I think this would have been effective with the typical TV horror format of a dark drama, spending most the time honing in on the character development and have at least 1 shocking kill every episode.
    This was a weird viewing experience for me as being gay I could easily relate to all these characters, but as a HUGE slasher fan I was left scratching my head.
    I did love the setting, the characters were great, the acting was good.
    In terms of horror I found the most horrific scene to be the scene where the jock undergoes electroshock therapy.
    I didn't like how all the gore and kills scenes were cut short. Did this film have Friday the 13th Pt 7's MPA panel review and make cuts?! 😂
    This would have been perfect as an American Horror Story season. They would have made it even more campy, better kills and spent a lot of time with the characters exploring their backstories and character arcs.
    I did read this was a first time director, given that I think he did an amazing job making a film. The concept was great, casting was great, visually it was great all that was missing was someone in their creative team that really wanted to champion the horror elements of this movie.
    I like how you compared this to a lifetime movie as I actually really enjoyed the story and the characters in the movie.
    Where this movie falters is being a horror movie.
    Overall I had mixed opinions on the movie but I'm leaning more towards the positive. Even though the slasher elements felt out of place I feel it was campy enough (even with the juxtaposition of the heavy themes) to be an entertaining watch.

    I just watched this movie a few hours ago. I was intrigued by the premise; I appreciated the look of the film (bringing back Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th feelings) and liked seeing Kevin Bacon back in horror. I have to agree with your assessment. There seemed to be a confusion as to what they wanted the tone of this movie to be. I wonder if this would have worked better as a short series rather than a movie and allow it to grow into the horror movie we get towards the end of the film because I don't feel that we get to spend enough time with the characters.

  • @BOOKishbehavior
    @BOOKishbehavior Před rokem +7

    I just couldn't disagree more. I loved it. I usually agree with the critical consensus...but I truly do NOT understand all the negative reviews. It shifts tone in a strange way here and there, some parts don't quite gel but as a whole? This was fucking awesome. As a gay man, it was difficult as hell to watch at times...because this sort of torture has happened for so long. It's realistic in that way. That's the real horror here. And it feels really powerful. It was consistently interesting, it was deep in every underlying message it attempted to convey and it was entertaining as hell to watch as both a contemporary drama and a horror film. And the acting is incredible...from everyone. These are very talented young actors and they deserve all the credit for their work. This felt unique. It also feels like some are missing that it's supposed to be a bit satirical. Its a shame. Because this is a great revenge film.

    • @ResaChiic
      @ResaChiic Před rokem +1

      i second you on this and also dont understand some of the (non-homophobic) critiques! I think the horror elements were more in the passive aggressive/casual homophobia/counselors, than in the actual killing. i didnt see the mixed messages as mixed messages- i saw them as reflections of IRL people who are passive aggressive about their hate.
      i dont love it bc i've seen more exciting queer slashers (there were no memorable deaths or epic fight scenes!) but i did enjoy several of the twists that it did, not to mention how cool it was seeing trans kids being cool main characters?

    Just got finished watching it. Movie wanted to be many different things and committed to none of them. Partially a psychological thriller but not, partially a slasher but not, partially a mystery but the puzzle box is missing some pieces, and partially a (as you said) Lifetime thriller but not. I enjoyed the chemistry between the teens but ultimately there's nothing here worth writing home about. An interesting sounding concept but they just didn't want to go far enough into it because they didn't want to step on any toes. The scariest thing was the part where the guy's using the dinosaur monitor instead of the modern one right next to it. Truly a jumpscare. Great review, Emma!

    I haven't seen it yet to judge myself, but I will say that the concept does somewhat remind me of what is probably my favorite season of American Horror Story. Season 2: Asylum.
    It's also got an LGBT lead who is forced to undergo conversion therapy, and they don't shy away from it. It's also got a masked serial killer on the loose, and Jessica Lange suddenly breaking into a choreographed song and dance routine with the rest of the inmates at one point.
    Check it out. You don't need to see season one or any of the other seasons if you don't want to as the season is its own self contained story, and I think it does an excellent job.

    As a queer person, I enjoyed this film. I hated the animal scene but appreciated the lack of... actually depicting the cruelty ? You hear it and see some of the lasting effect but it's not...like camera on the animal as it's being tortured. I was grateful for that.
    It was a mess of a script and I think the actors did what they could with it. There was a slight campiness to it but it was way more of a drama than a horror film.
    I was very happy with the ending, when Jordan is presented with a choice, I feel they made the right choice and helped me like the movie a little more if I'm honest.

I'm not surprise that you didn't enjoy this one Emma as the film, which has some good character development in the beginning, simply falls flat on it's face. It's like the writer/director didn't want to take any chances and was too afraid to offend anyone.

  • @maggieg.recommendsandrants3081

    My theory is the script Kevin Bacon read may have actually been good, but then the producers and director fiddled with it and screwed it up. Happens a lot.

    I felt like everything involving the conversion camp was tense. The MOMENT it turned slasher...it just went south. There was so much more that could have been done with this. Everything they went for fell flat. Everything. I would much prefer to have seen this movie as a drama then a horror movie. The singalong actually made me smile though.

  • @SK-bz9rq
    @SK-bz9rq Před rokem

    There's a lot of potential in this film, but most if it isn't realised (or at least not fully realised). As has been said I think a lot of the horror is meant to come from how conversion "therapy" is treated as acceptable, that it's okay to completely change who you are because of other people's prejudices, and it messes people up (as seen in the camp counselors), but they don't really land that. And the traditional slasher horror is only in the first couple of minutes and then the last ten minutes of so, so it doesn't work as just a slasher. I did like the musical bit, but it made the rest of the film feel very staid. And am I the only person who didn't get that They Slash Them is a bit of a pun, as in They (one group of people) will Slash Them (another group of people)?

Everything that is entertainment doesn't have to be political or social commentary. All originality seems to be going out the window these days with all of the sequels and prequels and remakes so it seems great when something like this has a potential to be an original idea. Thanks for watching so I can skip this one😉

    am i the only one who enjoyed this movie a lot? i gave it a 10/10 and im usually more critical of horror and movies. i went in with little expectations at all and really enjoyed it, definitely a bit predictable but it didn't feel bad for me that it was that way it felt like it should have been that way- it had me interested and i enjoyed trying to understand what they wanted and i think maybe they didn't know what they wanted or believed and that was the horror in it aswell, treating them a certain way and having expectations but not really knowing themselves what they believe and what their line is- i think it shows what a lot of horrible people are like with the community
    i definitely think its about perspective and what you enjoy to watch (:

    So I just watched this film tonight and I have to say I am surprised Kevin bacon actually did this film. You're right after reading the script how would he have thought this was going to be a good film unless they change some thing along the way. It's like it was trying to be like Friday the 13th vibe but not at all. I mean I like the fact that they had like a few twists turns but overall I don't get it. Yeah I can see why it got a 3 1/2 or a three star whatever it was. I have to say I couldn't recommend this to anybody and thought the animal cruelty was kind of terrible.
