Tales of struggles & triumphs in China's poorest places

  • Fighting poverty is a worldwide effort. More so in China, where there are still more than 18 million people living in extreme poverty. Each of them has a story to tell and everyone has different reasons why they live in the poorest parts of the country. We traveled to the interior part of China, the southern part of Gansu Province, to meet with some of them and hear how hard they are struggling to overcome challenges to their quality of life. CGTN’s Tian Wei gets up close and personal with young student Xuelian and volunteer teacher Yu Qing from Baihe County in Gansu, and tells their stories of struggles and triumphs in fighting poverty.

My name is Geoffrey Teng. I was borned in Viet Nam, however both my parent are of Harka background original from Canton China. I am now living in Australia. I can’t hold my tears every time I watched the school children whose parents are the migrant workers. The English teacher who graduated in the US, came back to China to teach the children in the rural area. She made my heart melted. She got the heart of diamond. She is the reason why life is still worthy of living. Teacher, in the name of humanity, please accept from me my greatest appreciation, may God gives you good health.

The English teacher is wonderful. My mom taught 5th grade and kindergarten in a poverty-stricken inner city public school district for 30 years and now works with a sorority that provides scholarships to education majors. She also spent two years teaching in a rural village in Sierra Leone with the Peace Corps. She says she can tell within the first 5 minutes of observation whether a new teacher is going to wash out or not. You have to love the job and the kids, it can't just be work.

I shed tears listening to the sorrows of the little girl and her grandparents. How could the girl's parents abandon her when she was just 2? She can think well like an adult and wishes her parents to reunite with them. Hopefully, her parents will realise and at least assist them financially. I hope the girl will do well in school and go to University so that she can break away from poverty. China is doing the right thing to give the poor kids a good education and free food. Credit should also be given to the volunteer teacher who sacrificed precious time to teach the students English. She is really a great example to others. If there are more volunteers like her in the world, then there will be more students benefitting from good education.

I believe we are contemporary. I just wonder which part of China you hail from. I suppose you live in the city or even abroad like in USA. As you are schooled in the basic foundation of a Chinese education from age 6 or seven, you would have learn all those compulsory subjects.
I am from Malaysia but I did not attend the village Chinese primary school, like most of the village children but instead I attended an English school and therefore never get to study the Chinese Language.
So, I feel inadequate when things like the Chinese culture, language or Chinese Literature are concerned. If I have the determination like the 12 year old girl, I guess I would have learned Mandarin when I was in my teens. Now, I can only enjoy English and Malay novels. I can understand and speak Chinese but can't read or write.
I believe the above village school can provide a solid foundation for the pupils and with such a passionate teacher, they learn English easily in an interactive way.
I find your documentary film very interesting and heart-wrenching as well. Thank you for being such a grounded interviewer and the way you posed those questions to the English teacher.

living in poverty, poor living condition doesn't mean that people are not happy, as long as they live with their families together. in 1980s when I was a child, our life condition was much worse than this. there was not enough electricity. I often did homework beside oil lamp. not many families had tv at that time. only three. my family had one. every night our home is full of people. neighbours came to watch tv but tv was often turn off because electricity was cut off. our home was not paved with anything on the ground but just earth. the roof was of wood, straw and mud. i didn't feel sad at all because people around all lived in the same condition.
i lived with my parents and my grandma. my relatives lived in the same area. We had a cat and a dog which brought me a lot of fun. i had a lot of good memories on my cats. every morning, i need get up early and went to school by a sister's bike. sometimes I had to walk for 2km to school myself. in winter, it was still dark when I went out. the earth and grass and bushes beside the road were covered with white frost. We raised 40 goats for sell, some chickens, some rabits for food. when i was free, i went to the field to pick wild vegetables for the chicken. when I chopped the vegetables into small pieces beside cage, the chicken were excited. i often went to the ditch to catch fish with a net. very interesting. i picked mushrooms in the woods near home every morning in the right season. I love this activity. got surprise all the way. sometimes i drove the goats and sheep out and let them eat outside. there were many mulberry trees and date trees standing beside the field. I often climbed on the tree to eat the mulberry and dates till I was full and brought some branches with fruits back home for my families. we didn't have pocket money. didn't have snacks and pocket food. didn't have much desires. i studied in school and played games with my classmates. i still had a lot of fun when i went home. when i studied in middle school, I need rode bike for 30 minutes along the road beside the field from my home to the school. I didn't have pocket money at all at that time. i didn't have the concept to get sone money to buy pocket food or something. life wad simple. what I did was just to study hard to go to the best high school in the city. i felt that life was hopeful as long as I work hard. I felt very happy then.

I almost couldn't watch the first section of the film with the sweet young girl and her daunting workload. You managed to coax nice responses from her but what a heartbreaking story. I am not surprised that you were so moved.
The young teacher was inspiring and the kids in the school were lovely. I did also like the headmaster. It can't be easy running a school there yet you would never know it to hear him talk.
I watch a lot of programmes and films about China. I find the culture and the history fascinating. The scale of the changes that have been achieved in the last decades, in almost every area of life, is almost unimaginable.
I suppose the real challenge with poverty alleviation in future will be about inequality. As hi tech industries develop and general incomes increase, the disparities in the rate of increase between the bottom and the top layers will become more marked.

When the interviewer asked the girl about her parents, and she said they abandoned her. I could see the pain in both the girl's and the interviewers face, the interviewer had to take a few moments to compose herself. I commend her for maintaining her composure and remaining professional despite clearly wanting to cry.

Thankyou for showing how the country side looks like.
I known the history of china. I used to practice kung fu and thi chi. As i get older stick to the thi chi. I love chinese people and had great impact in my life on varying scale.
I lived in the US about 39 years and will go back home africa, Ethiopia next year.
I want to contribute favorable environment to chinese. At least to make them feel like they are at home. I owe my chinese friends the least. One day i may say it loud what it was about. It's not one incident but three different occesions, which played critical in my life sucess. After i moved to different state two of them went bck to china, i regreted not knowing their addresses.
In any case, i hope will do something good in return.

"Life is Saying Hi and Goodbye".
Now, pause for a moment to reflect.
Some say "I come alone, and I will return alone".
    And a professor once queried,
    Who Are We,
    Where Do We Come From,
    Why Are We Here
In the early years before western influences, Chinese believed that everyone has a purpose here.
    Cheers

I think your comment is a very Western way of thinking - throwing money at something as if that solves everything. The little girl is a reflection of others in the same similar straits, and therefore is a much broader issue. Will you commit to ensuring funds for all of them?

Hi ! What your point here about your Thanks-Giving with Turkey, etc ?? Am sure it was not a turkey as there is no turkey in China unless it was an imported frozen turkey. As a us citizen, u must be more than boasting of having feeded so many university-students.
