  • Tutorial which shows the basic steps for practicing tapestry crochet for making color-work with our crochet hook. Work a small sample to carry and wrap an additional color and then make color changes to form a pattern. Turn on the English (not the automatic) subtitles if you feel my pronunciation is not very clear. Find more details and written instructions for this technique by following this link:

    Thanks for the GREAT tutorial. I loved it. I was just wondering, though, a few things. First, is the spiral effect created by not using a single crochet before beginning each next round? Second, is it possible to make it look okay by using the single crochet for each next round, so as to not give it that step-up look? Third, I noticed you were twisting your yarns as you began each new color. Does that, in any way, affect the way it turns out so tightly stitched, or can you still get that nice tightly-stitched-together look by not twisting the yarns over one another as you start each new color?

    • @MariaIsabelchabepatterns
      @MariaIsabelchabepatterns  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Sharon, about your questions: the spiral effect is created because of two main things, I'm crocheting by taking the two loops of each stitch and by the end of each round, I don't close with slip stitch but continue immediately with the first stitch of next round. If you don't like the diagonal effect of stitches, you can try working tapestry with back loop single crochet, I also have a tutorial that explains this variant. The twisting of yarns is so that the skeins don't get all tangled up, doesn't affect the stitch work, you can also avoid making these twists before each color change by using yarn bowls to keep each color separate for the whole project. Thank you for visiting and glad you like the instructions, have a very nice day :)

    • @MariaIsabelchabepatterns
      @MariaIsabelchabepatterns  Před 7 lety +8

      Hi Lindie, this is sport weight cotton yarn and a 3.5 mm crochet hook. I think the best yarns for tapestry crochet are those who aren't very hairy or fuzzy, such as cotton and fine wool. It's my pleasure sharing in the two languages, so I can reach people like you, thanks so much!! :)

    • @MariaIsabelchabepatterns
      @MariaIsabelchabepatterns  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi, thanks for writing. There are different ways of working tapestry crochet, the variation I'm showing in this clip, is in the round, in a spiral way, and taking both loops of each stitch. To get straighter lines, you can work in the round, in closed rounds (this is making a slip stitch to close each round) and just taking the back loop of each stitch. Hope you can give it a try with these changes and see if it works for you, have a great day!! :)

    • @MariaIsabelchabepatterns
      @MariaIsabelchabepatterns  Před 8 lety +2

      Thanks so much Sana, it's great to know that instructions are clear to follow. I used sport weight 100% cotton yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook. I think many yarns could be suitable for tapestry crochet, I personally like cotton because texture is very clean as it's not furry, so shapes look sharper. But you could also use acrylic or wool. Have a lovely day!

    I have a really hard time keeping the carried yarn from showing, particularly with worsted weight yarns. I'm working on a project now with two different fiber yarns. The background is cotton but the foreground is worsted acrylic. There was almost no way to avoid the acrylic showing inbetween the cotton stitches. Hiding my ends is quite a chore, lol.

    • @MariaIsabelchabepatterns
      @MariaIsabelchabepatterns  Před 6 lety +5

      Thanks so much for following the tutorial and sharing your experience. You can try using a smaller hook and see if this helps, I would also suggest using the same fiber for the yarns you use. You will always be able to see a little of the underlying color as crochet stitches are not completely closed. With practice, you will also get the hang of it, have a great day!! :D

    Is this tapestry crochet called instasia because the colours are hidden in each colour?

    • @MariaIsabelchabepatterns
      @MariaIsabelchabepatterns  Před 6 lety

      I only know it as tapestry crochet, some may call it intarsia as well, but I think intarsia refers more to crochet color work where additional colors are not carried or wrapped in between the stitches, hope this helps :)

    I have trouble with the carried yarn showing.

      You can try a smaller hook and see if it works, carried yarn will always be a bit visible but sometimes number of hook can be adapted to reduce this effect. Also, when carrying a lighter color behind dark colors, this can make it pop more because of contrast ☺

      +Chabepatterns If I want make a larger change purse, how would I increase the beginning chain.

    • @MariaIsabelchabepatterns
      @MariaIsabelchabepatterns  Před 8 lety

      It's an aluminum hook, you can just make more chains to begin, if you want to keep the same color sequence of this video then it should be a number of chains that is multiple of 5
