Also, in case anyone was wondering, one dollar in 1899 is worth $36.25 today, meaning that Dutch’s total take from the ferry is $5,437,500 in today’s money. To put it in perspective, that’s almost enough to buy one whole car in GTA Online🤡
Where did you get those numbers from? 36.25 would be $1,335.10 in 2023.

Fun fact: While the Pinkertons DID sue Rockstar for their portrayal of their agency as sadistic villains, they ultimately dropped the suit as it was determined there was not a significant difference from their real historical actions that would constitute slander.
What did they expect from the game told from the perspective of outlaws? And Milton is shown as an honorable man
I'd argue they made them actually look cool for once.
In reality the Pinkerton were a bunch of mercenary for hire bull who would shoot union workers
I feel like Milton was done well
He seemed reasonable they weren’t as bad as they think it’s only Ross
The Pinkerton's were dope af in the game, compared o how shitty they were irl. Me and my friend's still rp as them in online from time to time lol idk what they expected coming from a company that makes games where you can have huge gunfights with the police and national guard.
I'm guessing they just forgot about Booker Dewitt from Bioshock infinite.
the fact they tried to sue rockstar is piss ass funny
It kind of adds to their villainous lore 😂
All the lawsuit did was prove Rockstar right.
Also in 2023, they were hired as literally muscle by Wizard of the Coast to threathen and rob a Magic the Gathering CZcamsr, made his wife cry, just because Wizard themselves accidentally mailed him the wrong pack of cards, resulting in the youtuber accidentally leaking the pack...which was meant to release in a week nevertheless.
So even after two centuries, they still act like a Milton and a Ross.

I had forgotten it was Ross who taunted Arthur & Jack about “enjoy the fishing” - it is a great bit of foreshadowing/call back to RDR1. Today if anyone hears about the Pinkerton agency it’s usually in the context of corporate loss-prevention, like hiring and placing undercover employees. Their image probably hasn’t been helped by so many people thinking they are the guys who tried to kill Arthur.
They're also one of if not the largest & oldest private security firms in the country. Still little more than hired thugs for corpos. They're basically Max Tac or Militech from Cyberpunk.
I know them as the people who killed John.
@@Samm815they didn’t kill John tho, that was the 1911 version of the FBI
Well they would of been the ones going after the gang back in the day
Don’t care pinkertons will always be bad
I do have to agree with Agent Milton on his view of Dutch. He even allowed the gang a chance to disband and live normal lives if they would just leave Dutch. Whether that deal would have been held up by his cohorts would have to be seen later, but we can’t deny he tried to give them a chance.
I'm a firm believer that he would've let the gang live as civilized people and prevented his cohorts from going after them, unless they caused massive chaos. I truly think that Milton just wanted Dutch and Ross wanted to see all of them dead or arrested, the true madman of The Pinkertons
@@cliffjumper416I believe so too, I think Milton is deceitful but not a liar a kind of contradiction.
He took it too far after the Saint Denis robbery.
@@JackycakesV2He took it too far? Or did the gang maybe test his patience a tad bit too much?

I love the scene where Arthur makes love to Mr. Pinkerton, really brought chapter 7 together
That's what I'm saying
John Pinkerton
My favorite part of the game was when Arthur looked at Ducth and said "It's red deading time!"
It was the only cutscene we were unable to skip too.
Bruh... for one split second, my brain just accepted this sentence and conjured images. Needless to say, I'm massively turned on.
I feel like Milton is run down by the events of the game by the time Chapter 4 ends. He tries negotiating and cutting deals with other mercenary groups before, but when he sees that Dutch has such a strong hold on the people in his gang he gives up and just starts throwing all he can at them.
It's almost like he wanted originally to avoid conflict. And only changed strategies when he learned bloodshed was unavoidable.
@@Matt_History Isn't that normally how law enforcement should act?
@@twistedyogertYeah. But the Pinkerton Detective Agency wasn't so much a law enforcement group, as much as it was more of a Private Security Company.
@@twistedyogertthe Pinkertons weren’t Law Enforcement, they were private security, the only reason they are associated with Law Enforcement is because during the Civil War they had a contract with the government

@@ruska9773bc cornwall paid them to be on the van der linde gangs ass 😂
Lol. Funny thing is they're actually not much better than the gangs they hunted. Even today, yes the Pinkertons are still in business, they're primarily just hired thugs for corpo trash.
yeahhhh👀👀
@@ruska9773 they really didn’t, they gave them multiple chances to surrender peacefully
A very interesting detail I only just noticed -- Agent Milton only shoots Hosea after he turns back around and faces him. Shooting a man with his back turned to you was/is considered extremely dishonorable and underhanded; this is referenced in the duel between that old gunslinger and the old lawman. I always thought Milton was written to be irredeemably despicable, but he's consistently well-mannered and well-disciplined.
Just more layers to the themes of the story.
It could also be a way to legally clear himself. It doesn’t look good or hold up well in court when you shoot someone in the back. So waiting for him to turn was probably just a way for him to kill Hosea and not get criminalized for it.
So Could hosea just walk over inside the bank awkwardly
@@tales-frontier no, I think that Milton would of shot him regardless. He has two outs, one Hosea turns around and it clears him. Or Hosea walks closer to the bank and kills him for aiding in an armed robbery.
i don't think that was a problem during old west days, most of those criminals were wanted dead or alive so it wouldn't matter how they died@@greenknightofwar7024
Funny enough about Allan Pinkerton, my teacher in 8th grade was his direct descendant. He was my history teacher and even shared the same name as him. He was probably one of my most favorite teachers too.

It's funny that a simple quote from John can be actually quite loaded and thought provoking. When John says to Milton's enquiry about his name, and says 'Rip Van Winkle'......Rip Van Winkle is a story about a guy who meets a mysterious Dutchman who gives Rip some beer as payment for helping the Dutchman with some work. Rip drinks so much beer that he fell asleep for 20 years.
There's the thing about sleeping for 20 years, whereas the Pinkertons slogan was 'We Never Sleep.'
Then you've got Rip who meets the mysterious Dutchman, the same as John. The amount of thought that went into just a short sentence is incredible, and is one of the many reasons why Red Dead 2 is the best game ever made 🤠👍
Bravo, Vince!
It's a different way of saying "I met Dutch and lost 20 years of my life"
@@StitchPenthat's when John became Winkleberg
I think John just thought Rip Van Winkle would be a funny alias to tell Milton
what seems funny to me is that even tho the violent criminal John knew about the story of Rip van Winkle, Milton did not catch the joke and seemed to believe it was his actual name
I've always really appreciated the voice acting for the Pinkterton detective, especially when John gave him a false name upon their first meeting and he just follows up with "Huh..." before continuing on with what he was gonna say, like a subtle 'I don't believe you but whatever' 😂😂 I gotta respect the drip.
It was "Good day, sir" I think.
It's interesting looking back on the meeting Dutch had with the Pinkertons in the Leymoyne camp when he basically balked at the idea of saving the rest of the Van Der Linde gang by sacrificing himself. Especially when you consider his first speech in Coulter was claiming that he would trade places with the two dead characters if he could and doing so would save the gang from having to run.
If the Pinkerton's were to be believed, this was his chance to and he turned it down, which is another example of Dutch really being in it for himself rather than for the good of the gang.
Really it seems like everything throughout the game is done for Dutch’s well-being rather than the gang’s.
I highly doubt that considering what happens to John at the end RDR1
@@buck342443 That wasn't the Pinkertons though. Those were the actions of a government agency.
This happened in April Magic: The Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast reportedly sent Pinkerton private investigators to a CZcams creator’s house last week to retrieve mistakenly sold cards from an unreleased set. In doing so, the massive company upset the creator’s home, allegedly harassed neighbours and spawned a wave of criticism from the tabletop community and beyond.

I looked into the Pinkertons _"suing"_ Rockstar, they can't sue you. They have no right to claim that they own history, which was Rockstar's arguement. They eventually just dropped the cease and desist when Rockstar sued them in response with that arguement. They had no grounds.
*Just to think that if Dutch and the gang didn't rob that train the pinkertons would had went after the O'Driscolls since the train heist was originally theirs...it would had taken down Dutch's competition and they could've laid low in Valentine without Cornwall coming after them and they could've robbed that Valentine bank and use that same money to buy a passage somewhere and retire from crime for good...or at least something close to that...*
No, Dutch wouldn’t have let that happen, he doesn’t actually want to stop being an outlaw
It’s hilariously petty that the Pinkertons tried to sue Rockstar.
For what?
@@luismarin3500 no idea, it got mentioned in the video. Wouldn't surprises me if they did it just because they though the game made them the antagonists.
@@Bronasaxon im pretty sure that is it exactly, and also funnily as some other comments say all the lawsuit did was prove rockstar right
Always thought it was odd that rockstar creates fictional parodies of cities, states, people, and government agencies but didn’t parody Pinkertons. They even fictionalized the FBI and CIA in gta as FIB and IAA
Yeah it was a peculiar choice
For a good while FBI and CIA where actually in the 3d universe (not counting the crappy remasters that changed them to the HD universe verisons)
Only in the HD universe did they start that naming. Strange....
En el RDR1 están el Boreau creo que es una representación del FBI, Edgar Ross pertenece a esta agencia en el trascurso del RDR1.
CIA and FBI are powerful presently The Pinkertons however are impertinent
As said in the 3d universe they were using actual names like FBI and CIA but changed later. Red Dead one used Pinkertons already and with Ross there they had no choice but to keep the name since it tied to rdr1
50 men? Sounds like a decent warm up for Arthur.
Agent Ross most likely got all the information he needed about John from the Bank across the street lol him finding out about Micahs death was basically replacing Micah with John now to do their dirty work. He would have found him regardless
That's my main gripe with the story. John decides that out of all places he has to with his family to somewhere 5 mins from where he partook in a MASSACRE. He could've stayed in the Yukon, gone to Europe, Australia or Asia and live his life forever there with no risk, but no
@@noamias4897Abigail was the rat confirmed
@@noamias4897Maybe he thought that after 8 years the pinkertons will calm down a bit since the gang was disbanded and the two lieutenants of the gang ( Arthur and Hosea) were officially dead. The only really stupid thing John did was using his real name , like WTF ? He was known by Ross at that point and he was a fugitive since he escaped a federal prison.
Not listening to Milton and sticking with Dutch is the worst decision the gang have ever made. All of them died because of their own foolish loyalty towards Dutch.
Death before dishonor and working with pure evil like Milton. As John says in RDR1, Dutch was a far better man than the likes of Ross.
@@NikkolasKingHence why he said Milton and not Ross.
The Pinkerton Detective Agency actually existed as a predecessor to the FBI and still exist today as the Securitas security guard company.
You're thinking of the BOI. The Pinkertons were never a law enforcement agency. They were always a privately owned company that worked as gun thugs for whomever would hire them.

Crazy to think nothing would have happened if Dutch hadn't posted a CZcams video with unreleased Magic: The Gathering cards in it.
I love that Rockstar won the case against Pinkerton. This company to call on historic level that law-enforcment company to be it self criminal and antidemocratic would to put it mildly. It was also more than once depicted in the Late-Western sub-genre, like in the great Sergio Corbucci-Movie ( the guy also behind the original Django-Movie) "Il grande silenzio" / "The Great Silence" is some what funny, because between both of the great Sergios of the Italo-Westerns, so him and Sergio Leone had some what of a competition how to approach a s social-critique comantary on bounty hunters, in both of their great western movies. So with the fishing scene from the point they had this horror-movie a like situation with Arthur and the boy & the Pinkertons they went to play 2 families ( grays and braithwaites) against each other to profit them self, just like Sergio Leones nameless antihero depicted by Clint Eastwood does, in a "A Fistful of Dollars" with the 2 gangs ( original Leone tooked that setting from Akira Kurrosawa´s Samurai Movie Yojimbo btw.). For me this was hilarious because basically "Il grande silencio by corbucci wich came after "A Fistful of Dollars" was by design a critique on Sergio Leone´s bounty hunter anti-heroes. So inside of RDR2 the dispute of both this Italian Filmakers lives on as a homage and some sort of a post modern quote of their Discourse.
To give one more anecdote on Western Film makers social commentary and their competition.... For a long time Sergio Leone admired american film maker Sam Peckinpah, who was beside John Ford one of the 2 big house hold names of the American Late-Western Sub genre... but Peckinpah ( so goes the story ) made a comment that rejected him and also had a somewhat dislike of Italian westerns in general. So that's why Sergio Leone friend Tony Tonino Valerii had a scene in the Movie "My Name is Nobody", on a graveyard, with a gravestone with the name "Sam Peckinpah" on it, on wich the "Nobody" called protagonist and typical antihero played by Terence Hill commented on: "Sam Peckinpah..." (stated some what ironic) "...now that's a beautiful Name"
Anyone else smell burnt toast?
@@copperypuddle3858 you wanna imply I'm having a stroke because you don't get the context? I mean to mention alone how many times Rockstar Games qouted in all the GTA Titles Michael Mann movies like most popular with 1995 "HEAT" and also his less popular 1981 "THIEF" ...and also the "Miami Vice" TV-Series within the story of "Vice City" would make a very very long list... but yet alone that rockstar got short before the death of Edgar Froese and his little Band-project called "Tangerine Dream" the favourites film music componist of Micheal Mann ( who composed the music of HEAT, THIEF and Miamy Vice btw. ;) ) to do all the non radio-station related music in GTA V shows they kind of very very notorious with their movie quotes in the content of their games... Or is it about the social political commentary ? you would be surprised how an american actors heroes like beloved Clint Eastwood worked with Directors wich had been former known members of the block free Italian communist party ;) while they filmed all these "spaghetti western" movies for the most times back then in at that time still "Titos" Yugoslavia ;) And its also surely not without any reason why popular spaghetti western film componist Ennio Morricone wich wrote Music for both Sergios is so deeply beloved by Quentin Tarantino, also wrote "Heres to you" on the Anarcho-Communists Sacco & Vanzetti.

Imagine suing a game for showing up in a game to stop crime, when they're better known for strike busting and intimidation against civilians
Milton's the kind of person who reminds the teacher they gave out homework
Tbh I’m not sure to what extent I could call Pinkertons villains of RDR2. Most I could fault them on is how brutal they are in Lakay when a child was present but aside from that, nothing they did against the Van Der Linde gang was anything the Van Der Linde gang didn’t do to someone else.
Honestly, they were portrayed BETTER than they were in real life. Here, they were just going after an outlaw gang with quasi cultists quasi anarchist tendencies. In real life, they were shooting miners who wanted to unionize, not even really for great pay (maybe just fair pay) but just for safer working conditions and reasonable hours.
Never trust a man in a bowler hat.
The great thing about the Pinkerton's in modern time is they have no police power so if they try to intimidate you, you can tell them where to go and how to get there. Even mall cops have more authority then they do. Their authority stops at the boundaries of property to whom they work for. Securitas thought keeping the name would intimidate but now it's just a joke. Hark I think I hear someone opening a pack og MAgic Cards before the release date! Sick the Pinkerton's on em! hahaha
Tbf the word Pinkerton isn't even that intimidating, sounds like they deal with making pink stuff.
I would say it's worth pointing out that gamers may also be familiar with Pinkerton since it came to light earlier this year that Wizards of the Coast have hired them to go after CZcamsrs

The Pinkerton Detective Agency is far from the secret service. They are essentially mercenaries. Often hired as strikebreakers and railroad bulls amoung other things in their hayday. When they show up with the maximum machine gun that is lously based on the Ludlow massacre. In which the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (sound familiar) brought in the Colorado National Guard and Pinkertons to break a coal miners' strike. 19 were killed 12 of them were children. And this is far from a rare occurrence in the Pinkerton's bloody history.
P.S. Cornwall is basically a stand in for John D Rockefeller who owned the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company when this happened.
I ran here faster than I could, I've been waiting for a vid like this, much love mate.
The Pinkertons are the law’s gang
I love your videos so much man. Keep it up!!
Brilliant. Thnx for pulling together.
Thanks for doing that wonderful video about the Pinkertons i was about to play as a Pinkerton on an RP game and i got all the informations how these guys were. Thanks Fizhy
I love that you still make content on this game. shame they completely abandoned imo there greatest masterpiece. I always believed that Ross became crooked because of Milton’s death he never had another mentor properly show him how it’s done and just went along and his definition of justice became really cruel. Milton>ross
Very in-depth analysis
They don’t know John’s name because I think chapter 1 or 2, Arthur was still mad at John for leaving them for a year, and I think when John leaves they are still near Blackwater.
Let's go! I start replaying Fable 2 when you started making Fable content.
Now I replay RDR2 and back with the lore, perfect timing! Cheers
You should do a video on the real life inspiration of the Murfree Brood (Sawney Bean)
On Decades maybe
Which The titans from the anime and manga Attack on Titans are named after a criminal.
Doing my second play through of the game and love learning a lot more about the Red dead lore
Hell yes! A new video?,while I’m binge watching the other videos!
Honestly I’m not even mad at the Pinkertons because they were just doing their job
I didn't realize Agent Ross was the same guy that killed John in rdr1. That's a beautiful callback/foreshadow telling Jack to enjoy fishing while he still can
